1 Cum nu se potrivesc zăpada vara, şi ploaia în timpul secerişului, aşa nu se potriveşte slava pentru un nebun.

2 Cum sare vrabia încoace şi încolo şi cum sboară rîndunica, aşa nu nimereşte blestemul neîntemeiat. -

3 Biciul este pentru cal, frîul pentru măgar, şi nuiaua pentru spinarea nebunilor. -

4 Nu răspunde nebunului după nebunia lui, ca să nu semeni şi tu cu el. -

5 Răspunde însă nebunului după nebunia lui, ca să nu se creadă înţelept. -

6 Celce trimete o solie printr'un nebun, îşi taie singur picioarele, şi bea nedreptatea. -

7 Cum sînt picioarele ologului, aşa este şi o vorbă înţeleaptă în gura unor nebuni. -

8 Cum ai pune o piatră în praştie, aşa este cînd dai mărire unui nebun. -

9 Ca un spin care vine în mîna unui om beat, aşa este o vorbă înţeleaptă în gura nebunilor. -

10 Ca un arcaş care răneşte pe toată lumea, aşa este celce tocmeşte pe nebuni şi pe întîii veniţi. -

11 Cum se întoarce cînele la ce a vărsat, aşa se întoarce nebunul la nebunia lui. -

12 Dacă vezi un om care se crede înţelept, poţi să ai mai multă nădejde pentru un nebun decît pentru el. -

13 Leneşul zice: ,,Afară este un leu, pe uliţe este un leu!

14 Cum se învîrteşte uşa pe ţîţînile ei, aşa se învîrteşte leneşul în patul lui.

15 Leneşul îşi vîră mîna în blid, şi -i vine greu s'o ducă iarăş la gură. -

16 Leneşul se crede mai înţelept decît şapte oameni cari răspund cu judecată.

17 Un trecător care se amestecă într'o ceartă care nu -l priveşte, este ca unul care apucă un cîne de urechi.

18 Ca nebunul care aruncă săgeţi aprise şi ucigătoare,

19 aşa este omul care înşală pe aproapele său, şi apoi zice: ,,Am vrut doar să glumesc!`` -

20 Cînd nu mai sînt lemne, focul se stinge; şi cînd nu mai este niciun clevetitor, cearta se potoleşte.

21 După cum cărbunele face jăratic, şi lemnul foc, tot aşa şi omul gîlcevitor aprinde cearta.

22 Cuvintele clevetitorului sînt ca nişte prăjituri, alunecă pînă în fundul măruntaielor. -

23 Ca zgura de argint pusă pe un ciob de pămînt, aşa sînt buzele aprinse şi o inimă rea.

24 Celce urăşte se preface cu buzele lui, şi înlăuntrul lui pregăteşte înşelăciunea.

25 Cînd îţi vorbeşte cu glas dulce, nu -l crede, căci şapte urîciuni sînt în inima lui.

26 Chiar dacă-şi ascunde ura în prefăcătorie, totuş răutatea lui se va descoperi în adunare. -

27 Cine sapă groapa altuia cade el în ea, şi piatra se întoarce peste cel ce o prăvăleşte.

28 Limba mincinoasă urăşte pe cei pe cari -i doboară ea, şi gura linguşitoare pregăteşte pieirea. -

1 Like snow in summer and rain when the grain is being cut, so honour is not natural for the foolish.

2 As the sparrow in her wandering and the swallow in her flight, so the curse does not come without a cause.

3 A whip for the horse, a mouth-bit for the ass, and a rod for the back of the foolish.

16 The hater of work seems to himself wiser than seven men who are able to give an answer with good sense.

17 He who gets mixed up in a fight which is not his business, is like one who takes a dog by the ears while it is going by.

18 As one who is off his head sends about flaming sticks and arrows of death,

19 So is the man who gets the better of his neighbour by deceit, and says, Am I not doing so in sport?

20 Without wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no secret talk, argument is ended.

21 Like breath on coals and wood on fire, so a man given to argument gets a fight started.

22 The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, they go down into the inner parts of the stomach.

23 Smooth lips and an evil heart are like a vessel of earth plated with silver waste.

24 With his lips the hater makes things seem what they are not, but deceit is stored up inside him;

25 When he says fair words, have no belief in him; for in his heart are seven evils:

26 Though his hate is covered with deceit, his sin will be seen openly before the meeting of the people.

27 He who makes a hole in the earth will himself go falling into it: and on him by whom a stone is rolled the stone will come back again.

28 A false tongue has hate for those who have clean hearts, and a smooth mouth is a cause of falling.
