1 These things saying the Jesus went out with the disciples of himself beyond the brook of the Kedron, where was a garden, into which entered himself and the disciples of him.
2 Knew and also Judas, he delivering up him, the place; because often met the Jesus there with the disciples of himself.
3 The then Judas having taken then band, and from the highpriests and Pharisees officers, comes there with torches and lamps and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore knowing all the things coming on him, going out said to them: Whom seek you?
5 They answered him: Jesus the Nazarene. Says to them the Jesus: I am. (Was standing and also Judas, the delivering up him, with them.)
6 When therefore he said to them: That I am; they went into the behind, and fell on the ground.
7 Again then them he asked: Whom seek you? They and said: Jesus the Nazarene.
8 Answered Jesus: I said to you, that I am; if therefore me you seek, suffer these to go.
9 So that might be fulfilled the word, which he said: That whom thou hast given to me, not I lost of them no one.
10 Simon then Peter having a sword, drew her, and struck the of the highpriest slave, and cut off of him the ear the right. Was now a name to the slave Malchus.
11 Said therefore the Jesus to the Peter: Put up the sword into the sheath; the cup which has given to me the Father, not not should I drink it?
12 The then band and the commander and the officers of the Jews apprehend the Jesus, and bound him,
13 and led him to Annas first; he was for fatherinlaw of the Caiaphas, who was highpriest of the year that.
14 Was now Caiaphas he having advised the Jews, that it is better one man to be destroyed in behalf of the people.
15 Followed and the Jesus Simon Peter, and the other disciples. The and disciples that was known to the highpriest, and went in with the Jesus into the palace of the highpriest.
16 The but Peter stood at the door without. Went out therefore the disciples the other, who was known to the highpriest, and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought in the Peter.
17 Says then the femaleservant the doorkeeper to the Peter: Not also thou of the disciples art the man this? Says he: Not I am.
18 Stood and the slaves and the officers a coal fire having made, because cold it was, and warmed themselves; was and with them the Peter standing and warming himself.
19 The therefore highpriest asked the Jesus concerning the disciples of him, and concerning the teaching of him.
20 Answered him the Jesus: I publicly spoke to the world; I always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret I said nothing.
21 Why me dost thou ask? ask those having heard, what I said to them; lo, they know what things said I.
22 These things and of him having said, one of the officers having stood by gave a blow to the Jesus, saying: Thus dost thou answer the highpriest?
23 Answered him the Jesus: If evil I spoke, testify concerning the evil; if but well, why me dost thou beat?
24 Sent him the Annas having been bound to Caiaphas the highpriest.
25 Was and Simon Peter standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Not also thou of the disciples of him thou art? Denied he, and said: Not I am.
26 Says one of the slaves of the highpriest, a relative being of whom cut off Peter the ear: Not I thee saw in the garden with him?
27 Again therefore denied the Peter; and immediately cock crew.
28 They led then the Jesus from of the Caiaphas into the Jerusalem hall; it was and morning. And they not went into the judgment hall, that not they might be defiled, but that they might eat the passover.
29 Went out therefore the Pilate to them, and said: What accusation bring you against the man this?
30 They answered and said to him: If not was this an evildoer, not would to thee we delivered up him.
31 Said then to them the Pilate: Take him you, and according to the law of you judge him. Said therefore to him the Jews: To us not it is lawful to kill no one.
32 So that the word of the Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, pointing out by what death he was about to die.
33 Went then into the judgment hall again the Pilate, and called the Jesus, and said to him: Thou art the king of the Jews?
34 Answered him the Jesus: From thyself thou this sayest, or others to thee told concerning me?
35 Answered the Pilate: Not I a Jew am? the nation the thine and highpriests delivered up thee to me; what didst thou do?
36 Answered Jesus: The kingdom the mine not is of the world this; if of the world this was the kingdom the mine, the officers would those for me contend, that not I might be delivered up to the Jews, now but the kingdom the mine not is from this place.
37 Said then to him the Pilate: Not then a king art thou? Answered the Jesus: Thou sayest; that a king am I. I for this have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I may testify to the truth. Every one who being of the truth, hears of me the voice.
38 Says to him the Pilate: What is truth? And this saying, again he went out to the Jews, and says to them: I not one fault find in him.
39 It is but a custom for you, that one to you I release in the passover; are you willing therefore, to you I release the king of the Jews?
40 They cried out then again all saying: Not this, but the Barabbas. Was now the Barabbas a robber.
1 When Jesus finished his prayer he and his disciples crossed the Kedron winter stream to a garden.
2 Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples.
3 Judas brought a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees there with lights and with weapons.
4 Jesus knew what was about to happen to him. He asked: »Whom do you seek?«
5 They answered him: »Jesus of Nazareth.« Jesus replied: »I am he.« Judas the betrayer was with them.
6 When he said to them I am he they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked: »Whom do you seek?« And they said: »Jesus of Nazareth.«
8 Jesus answered: »I told you that I am he. If you seek me let these go their way.«
9 That way the word he spoke might be fulfilled; I lost none of those you gave me.
10 Simon Peter drew the sword he had, struck the high priests servant, and cut off his right ear. The servants name was Malchus.
11 Jesus said to Peter: »Put the sword in the sheath. Shall I drink the cup the Father has given me?«
12 The soldiers, the military commanders, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him.
13 They led him to Annas first for he was father in law to Caiaphas who was high priest that year.
14 Caiaphas was the man who gave counsel to the Jews that it was for their benefit that one man should die for the people.
15 Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple. The high priest knew that disciple. He entered the court of the high priest with Jesus.
16 Peter stood outside the door. The disciple known by the high priest went out and spoke to the woman who kept the door and he brought in Peter.
17 The maid that kept the door asked Peter: »Are you also one of this mans disciples?« He said: »I am not.«
18 It was cold. So the servants and officers warmed themselves by the fire. Peter also stood by the fire to get warm.
19 The high priest asked Jesus about his disciples and about the things he taught.
20 Jesus answered him: »I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple where all the Jews gathered. I spoke nothing in secret.
21 »Why do you ask me? Ask them that heard me what I spoke to them. They know the things I said.«
22 When he said this one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus with his hand, saying: »You answer the high priest!«
23 Jesus answered him: »If I spoke evil, bear witness of the evil. But if I spoke honestly, why do you strike me?«
24 Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 Simon Peter stood nearby warming himself. They asked him: »Are you also one of his disciples?« He denied it saying: »I am not.«
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said: »Did I see you in the garden with him?«
27 Peter denied it again. Then the cock crowed.
28 They lead Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early and they did not enter directly into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate went to them and asked: »What accusation do you make against this man?«
30 They answered: »If this man were not an evildoer we would not deliver him to you.«
31 Pilate replied: »Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.« The Jews said: »It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.«
32 Thus the word of Jesus would be fulfilled when he spoke about the kind of death he would experience.
33 Pilate entered again into the Praetorium. He called Jesus and asked him: »Are you the King of the Jews?«
34 Jesus answered: »You say this about me. Or did others tell you it concerning me?«
35 Pilate answered: »Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me! What have you done?«
36 Jesus answered: »My kingdom is not of this world! If my kingdom were of this world my servants would fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews. My kingdom is not from this domain.«
37 Pilate said: »Are you a king then?« Jesus answered: »As you say I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this purpose, that I should bear witness to the truth! Every one who is of the truth hears my voice.«
38 Pilate then asked: »What is truth?« After saying this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them: »I find no fault in him.
39 »You have a custom that I release someone to you at the Passover. Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?«
40 They cried out: »Not this man, but Barabbas. Barabbas was a robber.«
