1 Dann ward Jesus von dem Geiste in die Wüste hinaufgeführt, um von dem Teufel versucht zu werden;2 und als er vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte gefastet hatte, hungerte ihn darnach.3 Und der Versucher trat zu ihm hin und sprach: Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, so sprich, daß diese Steine Brote werden.4 Er aber antwortete und sprach: Es steht geschrieben: "Nicht von Brot allein soll der Mensch leben, sondern von jeglichem Worte, das durch den Mund Gottes ausgehet". 5. Mose 8,35 Dann nahm ihn der Teufel mit sich in die heilige Stadt und stellte ihn auf die Zinne des Tempels, d. h. der Gebäude im allgemeinen; der Tempel selbst, das "Heiligtum", wird im Griechischen durch ein anderes Wort bezeichnet6 und sprach zu ihm: Wenn du Gottes Sohn bist, wirf dich hinab, denn es steht geschrieben: "Er wird seinen Engeln befehlen über dir, und sie werden dich auf den Händen tragen, daß du nicht etwa deinen Fuß an einen Stein stoßest". Ps. 91,11-127 Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wiederum steht geschrieben: "Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht versuchen". 5. Mose 6,168 Wiederum nahm ihn der Teufel mit sich auf einen sehr hohen Berg und zeigte ihm alle Reiche der Welt und ihre Herrlichkeit9 und sprach zu ihm: Alle diese Dinge will ich dir geben, wenn du niederfallend mich anbetenO. mir huldigen; so auch V. 10 willst.10 Da sprach Jesus zu ihm: Geh hinter mich, Satanas! denn es steht geschrieben: "Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, anbeten und ihm allein dienen". 5. Mose 6,1311 Dann verließ ihn der Teufel, und siehe, Engel kamen zu ihm und dieneten ihm.

1 Then the Jesus was led into the desert by the spirit, to be tempted by the accuser.2 And fasting days forty and nights forty, after he was hungry.3 And coming to him the temper, said: If a son thou be of the God, speak, that the stones these loaves may become.4 He but answering said: It is written: Not by bread alone shall live a man; but by every word proceeding from mouth of God.5 Then takes him the accuser into the holy city, and places him on the wing of the temple,6 and saying to him: if a son thou be of the God, cast thyself down; it is written for: That to the messengers of him he will give charge of thee; and on hands they shall raise thee, lest thou strikes against a stone the foot of thee.7 Said to him the Jesus: Again it is written: Not thou shalt put to the proof Lord the God of thee.8 Again takes him the accuser into a mountain high exceedingly, and shows to him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them,9 and says to him: These all to thee I will give, if falling down thou wilt do homage to me.10 Then says to him the Jesus: Go thou behind of me, adversary; it is written for: Lord the God of thee thou shalt worship, and to him only thou shalt render service.11 Then leaves him the accuser; and lo, messengers came and ministered to him.
