1 Poiché dunque abbiam queste promesse, diletti, purifichiamoci d’ogni contaminazione di carne e di spirito, compiendo la nostra santificazione nel timor di Dio.

2 Fateci posto nei vostri cuori! Noi non abbiam fatto torto ad alcuno, non abbiam nociuto ad alcuno, non abbiam sfruttato alcuno.

3 Non lo dico per condannarvi, perché ho già detto prima che voi siete nei nostri cuori per la morte e per la vita.

4 Grande è la franchezza che uso con voi; molto ho da gloriarmi di voi; son ripieno di consolazione, io trabocco d’allegrezza in tutta la nostra afflizione.

5 Poiché, anche dopo che fummo giunti in Macedonia, la nostra carne non ha avuto requie alcuna, ma siamo stati afflitti in ogni maniera; combattimenti di fuori, di dentro timori.

6 Ma Iddio che consola gli abbattuti, ci consolò con la venuta di Tito;

7 e non soltanto con la venuta di lui, ma anche con la consolazione da lui provata a vostro riguardo. Egli ci ha raccontato la vostra bramosia di noi, il vostro pianto, il vostro zelo per me; ond’io mi son più che mai rallegrato.

8 Poiché, quand’anche io v’abbia contristati con la mia epistola, non me ne rincresce; e se pur ne ho provato rincrescimento (poiché vedo che quella epistola, quantunque per un breve tempo, vi ha contristati),

9 ora mi rallegro, non perché siete stati contristati, ma perché siete stati contristati a ravvedimento; oiché siete stati contristati secondo Iddio, onde non aveste a ricevere alcun danno da noi.

10 Poiché, la tristezza secondo Dio produce un ravvedimento che mena alla salvezza, e del quale non c’è mai da pentirsi; ma la tristezza del mondo produce la morte.

11 Infatti, questo essere stati contristati secondo Iddio, vedete quanta premura ha prodotto in voi! Anzi, quanta giustificazione, quanto sdegno, quanto timore, quanta bramosia, quanto zelo, qual punizione! In ogni maniera avete dimostrato d’esser puri in quest’affare.

12 Sebbene dunque io v’abbia scritto, non è a motivo di chi ha fatto l’ingiuria né a motivo di chi l’ha patita, ma perché la premura che avete per noi fosse manifestata presso di voi nel cospetto di Dio.

13 Perciò siamo stati consolati; e oltre a questa nostra consolazione ci siamo più che mai rallegrati per l’allegrezza di Tito, perché il suo spirito è stato ricreato da voi tutti.

14 Che se mi sono in qualcosa gloriato di voi con lui, non sono stato confuso; ma come v’abbiam detto in ogni cosa la verità, così anche il nostro vanto di voi con Tito è risultato verità.

15 Ed egli vi ama più che mai svisceratamente, quando si ricorda dell’ubbidienza di voi tutti, e come l’avete ricevuto con timore e tremore.

16 Io mi rallegro che in ogni cosa posso aver fiducia in voi.

1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man. 3 I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation. 5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more. 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. 9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 12 Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. 13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. 14 For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth. 15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 16 I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.
