1 Ecco, l’Eterno vuota la terra, e la rende deserta; ne sconvolge la faccia e ne disperde gli abitanti.

2 Avverrà al sacerdote lo stesso che al popolo, al padrone lo stesso che al suo servo, alla padrona lo stesso che alla sua serva, a chi vende lo stesso che a chi compra, a chi presta lo stesso che a chi prende ad imprestito, al creditore lo stesso che al debitore.

3 La terra sarà del tutto vuotata, sarà del tutto abbandonata al saccheggio, poiché l’Eterno ha pronunziato questa parola.

4 La terra è in lutto, è spossata, il mondo langue, è spossato, gli altolocati fra il popolo della terra languono.

5 La terra è profanata dai suoi abitanti, perch’essi han trasgredito le leggi, han violato il comandamento, han rotto il patto eterno.

6 Perciò una maledizione ha divorato la terra, e i suoi abitanti ne portan la pena; perciò gli abitanti della terra son consumati, e poca è la gente che v’è rimasta.

7 Il mosto è in lutto, la vigna langue, tutti quelli che avean la gioia nel cuore sospirano.

8 L’allegria de’ tamburelli è cessata, il chiasso de’ festanti è finito, il suono allegro dell’arpa è cessato.

9 Non si beve più vino in mezzo ai canti, la bevanda alcoolica è amara ai bevitori.

10 La città deserta è in rovina; ogni casa è serrata, nessuno più v’entra.

11 Per le strade s’odon lamenti, perché non c’è vino; ogni gioia è tramontata, l’allegrezza ha esulato dalla terra.

12 Nella città non resta che la desolazione, e la porta sfondata cade in rovina.

13 Poiché avviene in mezzo alla terra, fra i popoli, quel che avviene quando si scuoton gli ulivi, quando si racimola dopo la vendemmia.

14 I superstiti alzan la voce, mandan gridi di gioia, acclaman dal mare la maestà dell’Eterno:

15 "Glorificate dunque l’Eterno nelle regioni dell’aurora, glorificate il nome dell’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, nelle isole del mare!

16 Dall’estremità della terra udiam cantare: "Gloria al giusto!" Ma io dico: Ahimè lasso! ahimè lasso! Guai a me! i perfidi agiscono perfidamente, sì, i perfidi raddoppian la perfidia.

17 Spavento, fossa, laccio ti sovrastano, o abitante della terra!

18 E avverrà che chi fuggirà dinanzi alle grida di spavento cadrà nella fossa; e chi risalirà dalla fossa resterà preso nel laccio. Poiché si apriranno dall’alto le cateratte, e le fondamenta della terra tremeranno.

19 La terra si schianterà tutta, la terra si screpolerà interamente, la terrà tremerà, traballerà.

20 La terra barcollerà come un ebbro, vacillerà come una capanna. Il suo peccato grava su lei; essa cade, e non si rialzerò mai più.

21 In quel giorno, l’Eterno punirà nei luoghi eccelsi l’esercito di lassù, e giù sulla terra, i re della terra;

22 saranno raunati assieme, come si fa dei prigionieri nel carcere sottoterra; saranno rinchiusi nella prigione, e dopo gran numero di giorni saranno puniti.

23 La luna sarà coperta di rossore, e il sole di vergogna; poiché l’Eterno degli eserciti regnerà sul monte di Sion ed in Gerusalemme, fulgido di gloria in presenza de’ suoi anziani.

1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. 3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. 4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. 5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. 7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. 8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. 9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. 10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in. 11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. 12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. 14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. 15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. 18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. 19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. 22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. 23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
