OR avvenne, mentre Apollo era in Corinto, che Paolo, avendo traversate le provincie alte, venne in Efeso; e trovati quivi alcuni discepoli, disse loro: 
Avete voi ricevuto lo Spirito Santo, dopo che avete creduto? Ed essi gli dissero: Anzi non pure abbiamo udito se vi è uno Spirito Santo. 
E Paolo disse loro: In che dunque siete stati battezzati? Ed essi dissero: Nel battesimo di Giovanni. 
E Paolo disse: Certo, Giovanni battezzò del battesimo del ravvedimento, dicendo al popolo che credessero in colui che veniva dopo lui, cioè in Cristo Gesù. 
E, udito questo, furono battezzati nel nome del Signore Gesù. 
E, dopo che Paolo ebbe loro imposte le mani, lo Spirito Santo venne sopra loro, e parlavano lingue strane, e profetizzavano. 
Or tutti questi uomini erano intorno di dodici 
Poi egli entrò nella sinagoga, e parlava francamente, ragionando per lo spazio di tre mesi, e persuadendo le cose appartenenti al regno di Dio. 
Ma, come alcuni s’induravano, ed erano increduli, dicendo male di quella professione, in presenza della moltitudine, egli, dipartitosi da loro, separò i discepoli, facendo ogni dì sermone nella scuola d’un certo Tiranno. 
E questo continuò lo spazio di due anni; talchè tutti coloro che abitavano nell’Asia, Giudei e Greci, udirono la parola del Signor Gesù. 
E Iddio faceva delle non volgari potenti operazioni per le mani di Paolo. 
Talchè eziandio d’in sul suo corpo si portavano sopra gl’infermi degli sciugatoi, e de’ grembiuli; e le infermità si partivano da loro, e gli spiriti maligni uscivan di loro 
Or alcuni degli esorcisti Giudei, che andavano attorno, tentarono d’invocare il nome del Signor Gesù sopra coloro che aveano gli spiriti maligni, dicendo: Noi vi scongiuriamo per Gesù, il quale Paolo predica. 
E coloro che facevano questo eran certi figliuoli di Sceva, Giudeo, principal sacerdote, in numero di sette. 
Ma lo spirito maligno, rispondendo, disse: Io conosco Gesù, e so chi è Paolo; ma voi chi siete? 
E l’uomo che avea lo spirito maligno si avventò a loro; e sopraffattili, fece loro forza; talchè se ne fuggiron di quella casa, nudi e feriti. 
E questo venne a notizia a tutti i Giudei e Greci che abitavano in Efeso; e timore cadde sopra tutti loro, e il nome del Signor Gesù era magnificato. 
E molti di coloro che aveano creduto venivano, confessando e dichiarando le cose che aveano fatte. 
Molti ancora di coloro che aveano esercitate le arti curiose, portarono insieme i libri, e li arsero in presenza di tutti; e fatta ragion del prezzo di quelli, si trovò che ascendeva a cinquantamila denari d’argento. 
Così la parola di Dio cresceva potentemente, e si rinforzava 
Ora, dopo che queste cose furono compiute, Paolo si mise nell’animo di andare in Gerusalemme, passando per la Macedonia, e per l’Acaia, dicendo: Dopo che io sarò stato quivi, mi conviene ancora veder Roma. 
E mandati in Macedonia due di coloro che gli ministravano, cioè Timoteo ed Erasto, egli dimorò ancora alquanto tempo in Asia. 
Or in quel tempo nacque non piccol turbamento a proposito della via del Signore. 
Perciocchè un certo chiamato per nome Demetrio, intagliator d’argento, che faceva de’ piccoli tempii di Diana d’argento, portava gran profitto agli artefici. 
Costui, raunati quelli, e tutti gli altri che lavoravano di cotali cose, disse: Uomini, voi sapete che dall’esercizio di quest’arte viene il nostro guadagno. 
Or voi vedete ed udite, che questo Paolo, con le sue persuasioni, ha sviata gran moltitudine, non solo in Efeso, ma quasi in tutta l’Asia, dicendo che quelli non son dii, che son fatti di lavoro di mani. 
E non vi è solo pericolo per noi, che quest’arte particolare sia discreditata; ma ancora che il tempio della gran dea Diana sia reputato per nulla; e che la maestà d’essa, la qual tutta l’Asia, anzi tutto il mondo adora, non sia abbattuta. 
Ed essi, udite queste cose, ed essendo ripieni d’ira, gridarono, dicendo: Grande è la Diana degli Efesi. 
E tutta la città fu ripiena di confusione; e tratti a forza Gaio, ed Aristarco, Macedoni, compagni del viaggio di Paolo, corsero di pari consentimento a furore nel teatro. 
Or Paolo voleva presentarsi al popolo; ma i discepoli non gliel permisero. 
Alcuni eziandio degli Asiarchi, che gli erano amici, mandarono a lui, pregandolo che non si presentasse nel teatro. 
Gli uni adunque gridavano una cosa, gli altri un’altra; perciocchè la raunanza era confusa; ed i più non sapevano per qual cagione fosser raunati. 
Ora, d’infra la moltitudine fu prodotto Alessandro, spingendolo i Giudei innanzi. Ed Alessandro, fatto cenno con la mano, voleva arringare al popolo a lor difesa. 
Ma, quando ebber riconosciuto ch’egli era Giudeo, si fece un grido da tutti, che gridarono lo spazio d’intorno a due ore: Grande è la Diana degli Efesi. 
Ma il cancelliere, avendo acquetata la turba, disse: Uomini Efesi, chi è pur l’uomo, che non sappia che la città degli Efesi è la sagrestana della gran dea Diana, e dell’immagine caduta da Giove? 
Essendo adunque queste cose fuor di contradizione, conviene che voi vi acquetiate, e non facciate nulla di precipitato. 
Poichè avete menati qua questi uomini, i quali non sono nè sacrileghi, nè bestemmiatori della vostra dea. 
Se dunque Demetrio, e gli artefici che son con lui, hanno alcuna cosa contro ad alcuno, si tengono le corti, e vi sono i proconsoli; facciansi eglino citar gli uni gli altri. 
E se richiedete alcuna cosa intorno ad altri affari, ciò si risolverà nella raunanza legittima. 
Perciocchè noi siamo in pericolo d’essere accusati di sedizione per lo giorno d’oggi; non essendovi ragione alcuna, per la quale noi possiamo render conto di questo concorso. 
E, dette queste cose, licenziò la raunanza 

And it came to pass, in Apollos` being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples, 
he said unto them, `The Holy Spirit did ye receive -- having believed?` and they said unto him, `But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit;` 
and he said unto them, `To what, then, were ye baptized?` and they said, `To John`s baptism.` 
And Paul said, `John, indeed, did baptize with a baptism of reformation, saying to the people that in him who is coming after him they should believe -- that is, in the Christ -- Jesus;` 
and they, having heard, were baptized -- to the name of the Lord Jesus, 
and Paul having laid on them [his] hands, the Holy Spirit came upon them, they were speaking also with tongues, and prophesying, 
and all the men were, as it were, twelve. 
And having gone into the synagogue, he was speaking boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading the things concerning the reign of God, 
and when certain were hardened and were disbelieving, speaking evil of the way before the multitude, having departed from them, he did separate the disciples, every day reasoning in the school of a certain Tyrannus. 
And this happened for two years so that all those dwelling in Asia did hear the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks, 
mighty works also -- not common -- was God working through the hands of Paul, 
so that even unto the ailing were brought from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the sicknesses departed from them; the evil spirits also went forth from them. 
And certain of the wandering exorcist Jews, took upon [them] to name over those having the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, `We adjure you by Jesus, whom Paul doth preach;` 
and there were certain -- seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest -- who are doing this thing; 
and the evil spirit, answering, said, `Jesus I know, and Paul I am acquainted with; and ye -- who are ye?` 
And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaping upon them, and having overcome them, prevailed against them, so that naked and wounded they did flee out of that house, 
and this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who are dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified, 
many also of those who did believe were coming, confessing and declaring their acts, 
and many of those who had practised the curious arts, having brought the books together, were burning [them] before all; and they reckoned together the prices of them, and found [it] five myriads of silverlings; 
so powerfully was the word of God increasing and prevailing. 
And when these things were fulfilled, Paul purposed in the Spirit, having gone through Macedonia and Achaia, to go on to Jerusalem, saying -- `After my being there, it behoveth me also to see Rome;` 
and having sent to Macedonia two of those ministering to him -- Timotheus and Erastus -- he himself stayed a time in Asia. 
And there came, at that time, not a little stir about the way, 
for a certain one, Demetrius by name, a worker in silver, making silver sanctuaries of Artemis, was bringing to the artificers gain not a little, 
whom, having brought in a crowd together, and those who did work about such things, he said, `Men, ye know that by this work we have our wealth; 
and ye see and hear, that not only at Ephesus, but almost in all Asia, this Paul, having persuaded, did turn away a great multitude, saying, that they are not gods who are made by hands; 
and not only is this department in danger for us of coming into disregard, but also, that of the great goddess Artemis the temple is to be reckoned for nothing, and also her greatness is about to be brought down, whom all Asia and the world doth worship.` 
And they having heard, and having become full of wrath, were crying out, saying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!` 
and the whole city was filled with confusion, they rushed also with one accord into the theatre, having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul`s fellow-travellers. 
And on Paul`s purposing to enter in unto the populace, the disciples were not suffering him, 
and certain also of the chief men of Asia, being his friends, having sent unto him, were entreating him not to venture himself into the theatre. 
Some indeed, therefore, were calling out one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused, and the greater part did not know for what they were come together; 
and out of the multitude they put forward Alexander -- the Jews thrusting him forward -- and Alexander having beckoned with the hand, wished to make defence to the populace, 
and having known that he is a Jew, one voice came out of all, for about two hours, crying, `Great [is] the Artemis of the Ephesians!` 
And the public clerk having quieted the multitude, saith, `Men, Ephesians, why, who is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is a devotee of the great goddess Artemis, and of that which fell down from Zeus? 
these things, then, not being to be gainsaid, it is necessary for you to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. 
`For ye brought these men, who are neither temple-robbers nor speaking evil of your goddess; 
if indeed, therefore, Demetrius and the artificers with him with any one have a matter, court [days] are held, and there are proconsuls; let them accuse one another. 
`And if ye seek after anything concerning other matters, in the legal assembly it shall be determined; 
for we are also in peril of being accused of insurrection in regard to this day, there being no occasion by which we shall be able to give an account of this concourse;` 
and these things having said, he dismissed the assembly.
