1 Perciocchè colei che fu afflitta, non sarà più ravvolta in tenebre. Come al tempo di prima Iddio avvilì il paese di Zabulon, e il paese di Neftali, così, nel tempo posteriore, egli riempirà di gloria il paese dalla parte del mare, di là dal Giordano, la Galilea de’ Gentili.

2 IL popolo che camminava nelle tenebre, ha veduta una gran luce; la luce è risplenduta a quelli che abitavano nella terra dell’ombra della morte.

3 Tu hai moltiplicata la nazione, tu gli hai accresciuta l’allegrezza; essi si son rallegrati nel tuo cospetto, come l’uomo si rallegra nella ricolta, come altri festeggia quando si spartiscono le spoglie.

4 Perciocchè tu hai spezzato il giogo del quale egli era caricato, e la verga con la quale gli erano battute le spalle, e il bastone di chi lo tiranneggiava, come al giorno di Madian.

5 Conciossiachè ogni saccheggiamento di saccheggiatori sia con istrepito e tumulto; e i vestimenti son voltolati nel sangue; poi sono arsi, e divengon pastura del fuoco.

6 Perciocchè il Fanciullo ci è nato, il Figliuolo ci è stato dato; e l’imperio è stato posto sopra le sue spalle; e il suo Nome sarà chiamato: L’Ammirabile, il Consigliere, l’Iddio forte, il Padre dell’eternità, il Principe della pace.

7 Vi sarà senza fine accrescimento d’imperio e di pace, sopra il trono di Davide, e sopra il suo regno; per istabilirlo, e per fermarlo in giudicio, e in giustizia, da ora fino in eterno. La gelosia del Signor degli eserciti farà questo

8 IL Signore ha mandata una parola contro a Giacobbe, ed ella caderà sopra Israele.

9 E tutto il popolo la saprà; Efraim, e gli abitanti di Samaria, i quali dicono con superbia, e con grandigia di cuore;

10 I mattoni son caduti, ma noi edificheremo di pietre pulite; i sicomori sono stati tagliati, ma noi li muteremo in cedri.

11 Quando adunque il Signore avrà innalzati i nemici di Resin sopra lui, farà anche muovere alla mescolata i nemici d’Israele:

12 i Siri dall’Oriente, i Filistei dall’Occidente; ed essi divoreranno Israele a piena bocca. Per tutto ciò la sua ira non si racqueterà; anzi la sua mano sarà ancora stesa.

13 E perchè il popolo non si sarà convertito a colui che lo percuote, e non avrà ricercato il Signor degli eserciti,

14 il Signore riciderà in un medesimo giorno da Israele il capo e la coda, il ramo ed il giunco.

15 L’anziano e l’uomo d’autorità sono il capo; e il profeta che insegna menzogna è la coda.

16 E quelli che predicano beato questo popolo saranno seduttori, e quelli d’infra esso che si persuadono d’esser beati saranno distrutti.

17 Perciò, il Signore non prenderà alcun diletto ne’ giovani di esso, e non avrà pietà de’ suoi orfani, nè delle sue vedove; perchè tutti son profani e maligni; ed ogni bocca parla cose vituperose. Per tutto ciò l’ira sua non si racqueterà; anzi la sua mano sarà ancora stesa.

18 Perciocchè l’empietà arderà come un fuoco, divorerà le vepri ed i pruni, e si accenderà negli alberi più folti del bosco, e quelli se ne andranno a viluppi, come si alza il fumo.

19 Per l’indegnazione del Signor degli eserciti la terra scurerà, e il popolo sarà come l’esca del fuoco; l’uomo non risparmierà il suo fratello;

20 anzi strapperà a destra, e pure avrà fame; e divorerà a sinistra, e pur non sarà saziato; ciascuno mangerà la carne del suo braccio.

21 Manasse divorerà Efraim, ed Efraim Manasse; benchè sieno insieme contro a Giuda. Per tutto ciò l’ira sua non si racqueterà; anzi la sua mano sarà ancora stesa

1 As the former time made light The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, So the latter hath honoured the way of the sea, Beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

2 The people who are walking in darkness Have seen a great light, Dwellers in a land of death-shade, Light hath shone upon them.

3 Thou hast multiplied the nation, Thou hast made great its joy, They have joyed before Thee as the joy in harvest, As [men] rejoice in their apportioning spoil.

4 Because the yoke of its burden, And the staff of its shoulder, the rod of its exactor, Thou hast broken as [in] the day of Midian.

5 For every battle of a warrior [is] with rushing, and raiment rolled in blood, And it hath been for burning -- fuel of fire.

6 For a Child hath been born to us, A Son hath been given to us, And the princely power is on his shoulder, And He doth call his name Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.

7 To the increase of the princely power, And of peace, there is no end, On the throne of David, and on his kingdom, To establish it, and to support it, In judgment and in righteousness, Henceforth, even unto the age, The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts doth this.

8 A word hath the Lord sent into Jacob, And it hath fallen in Israel.

9 And the people have known -- all of it, Ephraim, and the inhabitant of Samaria, In pride and in greatness of heart, saying,

10 `Bricks have fallen, and hewn work we build, Sycamores have been cut down, and cedars we renew.`

11 And Jehovah setteth the adversaries of Rezin on high above him, And his enemies he joineth together,

12 Aram from before, and Philistia from behind, And they devour Israel with the whole mouth. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

13 And the people hath not turned back unto Him who is smiting it, And Jehovah of Hosts they have not sought.

14 And Jehovah cutteth off from Israel head and tail, Branch and reed -- the same day,

15 Elder, and accepted of face, he [is] the head, Prophet, teacher of falsehood, he [is] the tail.

16 And the eulogists of this people are causing to err, And its eulogised ones are consumed.

17 Therefore, over its young men the Lord rejoiceth not, And its orphans, and its widows He pitieth not, For every one [is] profane, and an evil doer, And every mouth is speaking folly. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

18 For burned as a fire hath wickedness, Brier and thorn it devoureth, And it kindleth in thickets of the forest, And they lift themselves up, an exaltation of smoke!

19 In the wrath of Jehovah of Hosts Hath the land been consumed, And the people is as fuel of fire; A man on his brother hath no pity,

20 And cutteth down on the right, and hath been hungry, And he devoureth on the left, And they have not been satisfied, Each the flesh of his own arm they devour.

21 Manasseh -- Ephraim, and Ephraim -- Manasseh, Together they [are] against Judah, With all this not turned back hath His anger. And still His hand is stretched out!
