IN quel tempo non v’era re alcuno in Israele; e in que’ dì la tribù di Dan si cercava eredità, da abitare; perciocchè fino a quel dì non le era scaduta sorte fra le tribù d’Israele in eredità. 
Laonde i figliuoli di Dan mandarono cinque uomini della lor nazione, presi qua e là d’infra loro, uomini di valore, da Sorea e da Estaol, a spiare un certo paese, e ad investigarlo; e dissero loro: Andate, investigate quel paese. Essi adunque, giunti al monte di Efraim, alla casa di Mica, albergarono quivi. 
Come furono presso alla casa di Mica, riconobbero la voce del giovane Levita; e, ridottisi là, gli dissero: Chi ti ha condotto qua? e che fai qui? e che hai da far qui? 
Ed egli disse loro: Mica mi ha fatte tali e tali cose, e mi ha condotto per prezzo per essergli sacerdote. 
Ed essi gli dissero: Deh! domanda Iddio, acciocchè sappiamo se il viaggio che facciamo sarà prospero. 
E il sacerdote disse loro: Andate in pace; il viaggio che voi fate è davanti al Signore 
Que’ cinque uomini adunque andarono; e, giunti in Lais, videro il popolo che era in quella città, la quale era situata in luogo sicuro, stare in riposo e in sicurtà, nella maniera de’ Sidonii; non essendovi alcuno nel paese, che desse loro molestia in cosa alcuna; ed erano padroni del loro stato, e lontani da’ Sidonii, e non aveano da far nulla con alcuno. 
Poi, essendo ritornati a’ lor fratelli, in Sorea ed in Estaol, i lor fratelli dissero loro: Che dite voi? 
Ed essi dissero; Or su, saliamo contro a quella gente: perciocchè noi abbiamo veduto il paese, ed ecco, egli è grandemente buono: e voi ve ne state a bada? non siate pigri a mettervi in cammino, per andare a prender possessione di quel paese. 
Quando voi giungerete là consciossiachè Iddio ve l’abbia dato nelle mani, verrete ad un popolo che se ne sta sicuro, e il paese è largo; è un luogo, nel quale non v’è mancamento di cosa alcuna che sia in su la terra. 
Allora seicent’uomini della nazione de’ Daniti si partirono di là, cioè, di Sorea e di Estaol, in armi. 
E salirono, e si accamparono in Chiriat-iearim, in Giuda; perciò quel luogo è stato chiamato Mahane-Dan, fino a questo giorno; ed ecco, egli è dietro a Chiriat-iearim. 
E di là passarono al monte di Efraim, e giunsero alla casa di Mica 
Allora, i cinque uomini ch’erano andati a spiare il paese di Lais, fecero motto a’ lor fratelli, e dissero loro: Sapete voi che in queste case vi è un Efod, e delle immagini, e una scultura, e una statua di getto? Ora dunque, considerate ciò che avete a fare. 
Ed essi si ridussero là, e vennero alla casa del giovane Levita, nella casa di Mica, e gli domandarono del suo bene stare. 
Or i seicent’uomini de’ figliuoli di Dan armati si fermarono all’entrata della porta. 
Ma que’ cinque uomini, ch’erano andati per ispiar il paese, salirono, ed entrarono là entro, e presero la scultura, e l’Efod, e le immagini, e la statua di getto, mentre il sacerdote era arrestato all’entrata della porta, co’ seicent’uomini armati. 
Essi adunque, essendo entrati in casa di Mica, e avendo presa la scultura, e l’Efod e le immagini, e la statua di getto, il sacerdote disse loro: Che fate voi? 
Ed essi gli dissero: Taci; mettiti la mano in su la bocca, e vieni con noi, e siici per padre, e per sacerdote; quale è meglio per te, esser sacerdote a una casa d’un uomo, ovvero esser sacerdote a una tribù, e ad una nazione in Israele? 
E il sacerdote se ne rallegrò nel suo cuore, e prese l’Efod, e le immagini, e la scultura, e se ne andò fra quella gente. 
Poi i Daniti si rimisero al lor cammino, avendo posto innanzi a loro i piccoli fanciulli, ed il bestiame, e le robe. 
Ed essendo già lungi della casa di Mica, gli uomini ch’erano nelle case vicine alla casa di Mica, si adunarono a grida, e seguitarono di presso i figliuoli di Dan. 
E gridarono a’ figliuoli di Dan. Ed essi, voltando la faccia, dissero a Mica: Che cosa hai, che tu hai adunata la tua gente? 
Ed egli disse: Voi avete presi i miei dii, che io avea fatti, e il sacerdote, e ve ne siete andati via. Che mi resta egli più? E come dunque mi dite voi: Che hai? 
Ma i figliuoli di Dan gli dissero: Non far che s’intenda la tua voce appresso di noi; che talora alcuni uomini d’animo iracondo non si avventino sopra voi; e che tu, e que’ di casa tua, perdiate la vita. 
I figliuoli di Dan adunque seguitarono il lor cammino; e Mica, veggendo ch’erano più forti di lui, rivoltosi indietro, se ne ritornò a casa sua 
Ed essi, preso quello che Mica avea fatto, e il sacerdote ch’egli avea, giunsero a Lais, ad un popolo che se ne stava in quiete e in sicurtà; e percossero la gente a fil di spada, e arsero la città col fuoco. 
E non vi fu alcuno che la riscotesse; perciocchè era lungi di Sidon, e gli abitanti non aveano da far nulla con niuno; e la città era nella valle che è nel paese di Bet-rehob. Poi riedificarono la città, e abitarono in essa. 
E le posero nome Dan, del nome di Dan, lor padre, il qual fu figliuolo d’Israele; in luogo che il nome di quella città prima era Lais. 
E i figliuoli di Dan si rizzarono la scultura; e Gionatan, figliuolo di Ghersom, figliuolo di Manasse, e i suoi figliuoli dopo di lui, furono sacerdoti della tribù di Dan, infino al giorno che gli abitanti del paese furono menati in cattività. 
Si rizzarono adunque quella scultura di Mica, ch’egli avea fatta; ed ella vi fu tutto il tempo che la Casa di Dio fu in Silo 

In those days there is no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danite is seeking for itself an inheritance to inhabit, for [that] hath not fallen to it unto that day in the midst of the tribes of Israel by inheritance. 
And the sons of Dan send, out of their family, five men of them, men, sons of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to traverse the land, and to search it, and they say unto them, `Go, search the land;` and they come into the hill-country of Ephraim, unto the house of Micah, and lodge there. 
They [are] with the household of Micah, and they have discerned the voice of the young man, the Levite, and turn aside there, and say to him, `Who hath brought thee hither? and what art thou doing in this [place?] and what to thee here?` 
And he saith unto them, `Thus and thus hath Micah done to me; and he hireth me, and I am to him for a priest.` 
And they say to him, `Ask, we pray thee, at God, and we know whether our way is prosperous on which we are going.` 
And the priest saith to them, `Go in peace; over-against Jehovah [is] your way in which ye go.` 
And the five men go, and come in to Laish, and see the people which [is] in its midst, dwelling confidently, according to the custom of Zidonians, quiet and confident; and there is none putting to shame in the land in [any] thing, possessing restraint, and they [are] far off from the Zidonians, and have no word with [any] man. 
And they come in unto their brethren, at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren say to them, `What -- ye?` 
And they say, `Rise, and we go up against them, for we have seen the land, and lo, very good; and ye are keeping silent! be not slothful to go -- to enter to possess the land. 
When ye go, ye come in unto a people confident, and the land [is] large on both hands, for God hath given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything which [is] in the land.` 
And there journey thence, of the family of the Danite, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war. 
And they go up and encamp in Kirjath-Jearim, in Judah, therefore they have called that place, `Camp of Dan,` till this day; lo, behind Kirjath-Jearim. 
And they pass over thence [to] the hill-country of Ephraim, and come in unto the house of Micah. 
And the five men, those going to traverse the land of Laish, answer and say unto their brethren, `Have ye known that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and graven image, and molten image? and now, know what ye do.` 
And they turn aside thither, and come in unto the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and ask of him of welfare, -- 
(and the six hundred men girded with their weapons of war, who [are] of the sons of Dan, are standing at the opening of the gate), -- 
yea, the five men, those going to traverse the land, go up -- they have come in thither -- they have taken the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image -- and the priest is standing at the opening of the gate, and the six hundred men who are girded with weapons of war -- 
yea, these have entered the house of Micah, and take the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest saith unto them, `What are ye doing?` 
and they say to him, `Keep silent, lay thy hand on thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us for a father and for a priest: is it better thy being a priest to the house of one man, or thy being priest to a tribe and to a family in Israel?` 
And the heart of the priest is glad, and he taketh the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and goeth into the midst of the people, 
and they turn and go, and put the infants, and the cattle, and the baggage, before them. 
They have been far off from the house of Micah -- and the men who [are] in the houses which [are] near the house of Micah have been called together, and overtake the sons of Dan, 
and call unto the sons of Dan, and they turn round their faces, and say to Micah, `What -- to thee that thou hast been called together?` 
And he saith, `My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what [is] this ye say unto me, What -- to thee!` 
And the sons of Dan say unto him, `Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest men bitter in soul fall upon you, and thou hast gathered thy life, and the life of thy household;` 
and the sons of Dan go on their way, and Micah seeth that they are stronger than he, and turneth, and goeth back unto his house. 
And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire, 
and there is no deliverer, for it [is] far off from Zidon, and they have no word with [any] man, and it [is] in the valley which [is] by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it, 
and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish [is] the name of the city at the first. 
And the sons of Dan raise up for themselves the graven image, and Jonathan son of Gershom, son of Manasseh, he and his sons have been priests to the tribe of the Danite, till the day of the removal of [the people] of the land. 
And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.
