ALLORA tutta la moltitudine di loro si levò, e lo menò a Pilato. 
E cominciarono ad accusarlo, dicendo: Noi abbiam trovato costui sovvertendo la nazione, e divietando di dare i tributi a Cesare, dicendo sè esser il Cristo, il Re. 
E Pilato lo domandò, dicendo: Sei tu il Re de’ Giudei? Ed egli, rispondendogli, disse: Tu lo dici. 
E Pilato disse a’ principali sacerdoti, ed alle turbe: Io non trovo maleficio alcuno in quest’uomo. 
Ma essi facevan forza, dicendo: Egli commuove il popolo, insegnando per tutta la Giudea, avendo cominciato da Galilea fin qua. 
Allora Pilato, avendo udito nominar Galilea, domandò se quell’uomo era Galileo. 
E, risaputo ch’egli era della giurisdizione di Erode, lo rimandò ad Erode, il quale era anche egli in Gerusalemme a que’ dì. 
Ed Erode, veduto Gesù, se ne rallegrò grandemente; perciocchè da molto tempo desiderava di vederlo; perchè avea udite molte cose di lui, e sperava veder fargli qualche miracolo. 
E lo domandò per molti ragionamenti; ma egli non gli rispose nulla. 
Ed i principali sacerdoti, e gli Scribi, comparvero quivi, accusandolo con grande sforzo. 
Ma Erode, co’ suoi soldati, dopo averlo sprezzato, e schernito, lo vestì d’una veste bianca, e lo rimandò a Pilato. 
Ed Erode e Pilato divennero amici insieme in quel giorno; perciocchè per l’addietro erano stati in inimicizia fra loro 
E Pilato, chiamati insieme i principali sacerdoti, ed i magistrati, e il popolo, disse loro: 
Voi mi avete fatto comparir quest’uomo davanti, come se egli sviasse il popolo; ed ecco, avendolo io in presenza vostra esaminato, non ho trovato in lui alcun maleficio di quelli de’ quali l’accusate. 
Ma non pure Erode; poichè io vi ho mandati a lui; ed ecco, non gli è stato fatto nulla, onde egli sia giudicato degno di morte. 
Io adunque lo castigherò, e poi lo libererò. 
Or gli conveniva di necessità liberar loro uno, ogni dì di festa. 
E tutta la moltitudine gridò, dicendo: Togli costui, e liberaci Barabba. 
Costui era stato incarcerato per una sedizione, fatta nella città, con omicidio. 
Perciò Pilato da capo parlò loro, desiderando liberar Gesù. 
Ma essi gridavano in contrario, dicendo: Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo. 
Ed egli, la terza volta, disse loro: Ma pure, che male ha fatto costui? io non ho trovato in lui maleficio alcuno degno di morte. Io adunque lo castigherò, e poi lo libererò. 
Ma essi facevano istanza con gran grida, chiedendo che fosse crocifisso; e le lor grida e quelle de’ principali sacerdoti, si rinforzavano. 
E Pilato pronunziò che fosse fatto ciò che chiedevano. 
E liberò loro colui ch’era stato incarcerato per sedizione, e per omicidio, il quale essi aveano chiesto; e rimise Gesù alla lor volontà 
E COME essi lo menavano, presero un certo Simon Cireneo, che veniva da’ campi, e gli misero addosso la croce, per portarla dietro a Gesù. 
Or una gran moltitudine di popolo, e di donne, lo seguitava, le quali ancora facevano cordoglio, e lo lamentavano. 
Ma Gesù, rivoltosi a loro, disse: Figliuole di Gerusalemme, non piangete per me; anzi, piangete per voi stesse, e per li vostri figliuoli. 
Perciocchè, ecco, i giorni vengono che altri dirà: Beate le sterili! e beati i corpi che non hanno partorito, e le mammelle che non hanno lattato! 
Allora prenderanno a dire ai monti: Cadeteci addosso; ed a’ colli: Copriteci. 
Perciocchè, se fanno queste cose al legno verde, che sarà egli fatto al secco? 
Or due altri ancora, ch’erano malfattori, erano menati con lui, per esser fatti morire. 
E QUANDO furono andati al luogo, detto del Teschio, crocifissero quivi lui, e i malfattori, l’uno a destra, e l’altro a sinistra. 
E Gesù diceva: Padre, perdona loro, perciocchè non sanno quel che fanno. Poi, avendo fatte delle parti de’ suoi vestimenti, trassero le sorti. 
E il popolo stava quivi, riguardando; ed anche i rettori, insiem col popolo, lo beffavano, dicendo: Egli ha salvati gli altri, salvi sè stesso, se pur costui è il Cristo, l’Eletto di Dio. 
Or i soldati ancora lo schernivano, accostandosi, e presentandogli dell’aceto; e dicendo: 
Se tu sei il Re de’ Giudei, salva te stesso. 
Or vi era anche questo titolo, di sopra al suo capo, scritto in lettere greche, romane, ed ebraiche: COSTUI È IL RE DE’ GIUDEI. 
Or l’uno de’ malfattori appiccati lo ingiuriava, dicendo: Se tu sei il Cristo, salva te stesso, e noi. 
Ma l’altro, rispondendo, lo sgridava, dicendo: Non hai tu timore, non pur di Dio, essendo nel medesimo supplizio? 
E noi di vero vi siam giustamente, perciocchè riceviamo la condegna pena de’ nostri fatti; ma costui non ha commesso alcun misfatto. 
Poi disse a Gesù: Signore, ricordati di me, quando sarai venuto nel tuo regno. 
E Gesù gli disse: Io ti dico in verità, che oggi tu sarai meco in paradiso 
Or era intorno delle sei ore, e si fecer tenebre sopra tutta la terra, infino alle nove. 
E il sole scurò, e la cortina del tempio si fendè per lo mezzo. 
E Gesù, dopo aver gridato con gran voce, disse: Padre, io rimetto lo spirito mio nelle tue mani. E detto questo, rendè lo spirito. 
E il centurione, veduto ciò ch’era avvenuto, glorificò Iddio, dicendo: Veramente quest’uomo era giusto. 
E tutte le turbe, che si erano raunate a questo spettacolo, vedute le cose ch’erano avvenute, se ne tornarono, battendosì il petto. 
ORA, tutti i suoi conoscenti, e le donne che l’aveano insieme seguitato da Galilea, si fermarono da lontano, riguardando queste cose 
Ed ecco un certo uomo, chiamato per nome Giuseppe, ch’era consigliere, uomo da bene, e diritto; 
il qual non avea acconsentito al consiglio, nè all’atto loro; ed era da Arimatea, città de’ Giudei; ed aspettava anch’egli il regno di Dio; 
costui venne a Pilato, e chiese il corpo di Gesù. 
E trattolo giù di croce, l’involse in un lenzuolo, e lo mise in un monumento tagliato in una roccia, nel quale niuno era stato ancora posto. 
Or quel giorno era la preparazion della festa, e il sabato soprastava. 
E le donne, le quali eran venute insieme da Galilea con Gesù, avendo seguitato Giuseppe, riguardarono il monumento, e come il corpo d’esso vi era posto. 
Ed essendosene tornate, apparecchiarono degli aromati, e degli olii odoriferi, e si riposarono il sabato, secondo il comandamento 

And having risen, the whole multitude of them did lead him to Pilate, 
and began to accuse him, saying, `This one we found perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying himself to be Christ a king.` 
And Pilate questioned him, saying, `Thou art the king of the Jews?` and he answering him, said, `Thou dost say [it].` 
And Pilate said unto the chief priests, and the multitude, `I find no fault in this man;` 
and they were the more urgent, saying -- `He doth stir up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea -- having begun from Galilee -- unto this place.` 
And Pilate having heard of Galilee, questioned if the man is a Galilean, 
and having known that he is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him back unto Herod, he being also in Jerusalem in those days. 
And Herod having seen Jesus did rejoice exceedingly, for he was wishing for a long [time] to see him, because of hearing many things about him, and he was hoping some sign to see done by him, 
and was questioning him in many words, and he answered him nothing. 
And the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing him, 
and Herod with his soldiers having set him at nought, and having mocked, having put around him gorgeous apparel, did send him back to Pilate, 
and both Pilate and Herod became friends on that day with one another, for they were before at enmity between themselves. 
And Pilate having called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people, 
said unto them, `Ye brought to me this man as perverting the people, and lo, I before you having examined, found in this man no fault in those things ye bring forward against him; 
no, nor yet Herod, for I sent you back unto him, and lo, nothing worthy of death is having been done by him; 
having chastised, therefore, I will release him,` 
for it was necessary for him to release to them one at every feast, 
and they cried out -- the whole multitude -- saying, `Away with this one, and release to us Barabbas,` 
who had been, because of a certain sedition made in the city, and murder, cast into prison. 
Pilate again then -- wishing to release Jesus -- called to them, 
but they were calling out, saying, `Crucify, crucify him.` 
And he a third time said unto them, `Why, what evil did he? no cause of death did I find in him; having chastised him, then, I will release [him].` 
And they were pressing with loud voices asking him to be crucified, and their voices, and those of the chief priests, were prevailing, 
and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done, 
and he released him who because of sedition and murder hath been cast into the prison, whom they were asking, and Jesus he gave up to their will. 
And as they led him away, having taken hold on Simon, a certain Cyrenian, coming from the field, they put on him the cross, to bear [it] behind Jesus. 
And there was following him a great multitude of the people, and of women, who also were beating themselves and lamenting him, 
and Jesus having turned unto them, said, `Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves weep ye, and for your children; 
for, lo, days do come, in which they shall say, Happy the barren, and wombs that did not bare, and paps that did not give suck; 
then they shall begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us; -- 
for, if in the green tree they do these things -- in the dry what may happen?` 
And there were also others -- two evil-doers -- with him, to be put to death; 
and when they came to the place that is called Skull, there they crucified him and the evil-doers, one on the right hand and one on the left. 
And Jesus said, `Father, forgive them, for they have not known what they do;` and parting his garments they cast a lot. 
And the people were standing, looking on, and the rulers also were sneering with them, saying, `Others he saved, let him save himself, if this be the Christ, the choice one of God.` 
And mocking him also were the soldiers, coming near and offering vinegar to him, 
and saying, `If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.` 
And there was also a superscription written over him, in letters of Greek, and Roman, and Hebrew, `This is the King of the Jews.` 
And one of the evil-doers who were hanged, was speaking evil of him, saying, `If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us.` 
And the other answering, was rebuking him, saying, `Dost thou not even fear God, that thou art in the same judgment? 
and we indeed righteously, for things worthy of what we did we receive back, but this one did nothing out of place;` 
and he said to Jesus, `Remember me, lord, when thou mayest come in thy reign;` 
and Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, To-day with me thou shalt be in the paradise.` 
And it was, as it were, the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land till the ninth hour, 
and the sun was darkened, and the vail of the sanctuary was rent in the midst, 
and having cried with a loud voice, Jesus said, `Father, to Thy hands I commit my spirit;` and these things having said, he breathed forth the spirit. 
And the centurion having seen what was done, did glorify God, saying, `Really this man was righteous;` 
and all the multitudes who were come together to this sight, beholding the things that came to pass, smiting their breasts did turn back; 
and all his acquaintances stood afar off, and women who did follow him from Galilee, beholding these things. 
And lo, a man, by name Joseph, being a counsellor, a man good and righteous, 
-- he was not consenting to their counsel and deed -- from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who also himself was expecting the reign of God, 
he, having gone near to Pilate, asked the body of Jesus, 
and having taken it down, he wrapped it in fine linen, and placed it in a tomb hewn out, where no one was yet laid. 
And the day was a preparation, and sabbath was approaching, 
and the women also who have come with him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how his body was placed, 
and having turned back, they made ready spices and ointments, and on the sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the command.
