1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. 6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. 7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 8 I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. 9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 10 And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago. 11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. 12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 13 For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: 14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: 15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack. 16 But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. 17 For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. 18 And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches; 19 And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind: 20 Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: 21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you. 23 Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. 24 Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.

1 Nous vous faisons connaître, frères, la grâce de Dieu qui s'est manifestée dans les Eglises de la Macédoine.

2 Au milieu de beaucoup de tribulations qui les ont éprouvées, leur joie débordante et leur pauvreté profonde ont produit avec abondance de riches libéralités de leur part.

3 Ils ont, je l'atteste, donné volontairement selon leurs moyens, et même au delà de leurs moyens,

4 nous demandant avec de grandes instances la grâce de prendre part à l'assistance destinée aux saints.

5 Et non seulement ils ont contribué comme nous l'espérions, mais ils se sont d'abord donnés eux-mêmes au Seigneur, puis à nous, par la volonté de Dieu.

6 Nous avons donc engagé Tite à achever chez vous cette oeuvre de bienfaisance, comme il l'avait commencée.

7 De même que vous excellez en toutes choses, en foi, en parole, en connaissance, en zèle à tous égards, et dans votre amour pour nous, faites en sorte d'exceller aussi dans cette oeuvre de bienfaisance.

8 Je ne dis pas cela pour donner un ordre, mais pour éprouver, par le zèle des autres, la sincérité de votre charité.

9 Car vous connaissez la grâce de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui pour vous s'est fait pauvre, de riche qu'il était, afin que par sa pauvreté vous fussiez enrichis.

10 C'est un avis que je donne là-dessus, car cela vous convient, à vous qui non seulement avez commencé à agir, mais qui en avez eu la volonté dès l'année dernière.

11 Achevez donc maintenant d'agir, afin que l'accomplissement selon vos moyens réponde à l'empressement que vous avez mis à vouloir.

12 La bonne volonté, quand elle existe, est agréable en raison de ce qu'elle peut avoir à sa disposition, et non de ce qu'elle n'a pas.

13 Car il s'agit, non de vous exposer à la détresse pour soulager les autres,

14 mais de suivre une règle d'égalité: dans la circonstance présente votre superflu pourvoira à leurs besoins, afin que leur superflu pourvoie pareillement aux vôtres, en sorte qu'il y ait égalité,

15 selon qu'il est écrit: Celui qui avait ramassé beaucoup n'avait rien de trop, et celui qui avait ramassé peu n'en manquait pas.

16 Grâces soient rendues à Dieu de ce qu'il a mis dans le coeur de Tite le même empressement pour vous;

17 car il a accueilli notre demande, et c'est avec un nouveau zèle et de son plein gré qu'il part pour aller chez vous.

18 Nous envoyons avec lui le frère dont la louange en ce qui concerne l'Evangile est répandue dans toutes les Eglises,

19 et qui, de plus, a été choisi par les Eglises pour être notre compagnon de voyage dans cette oeuvre de bienfaisance, que nous accomplissons à la gloire du Seigneur même et en témoignage de notre bonne volonté.

20 Nous agissons ainsi, afin que personne ne nous blâme au sujet de cette abondante collecte, à laquelle nous donnons nos soins;

21 car nous recherchons ce qui est bien, non seulement devant le Seigneur, mais aussi devant les hommes.

22 Nous envoyons avec eux notre frère, dont nous avons souvent éprouvé le zèle dans beaucoup d'occasions, et qui en montre plus encore cette fois à cause de sa grande confiance en vous.

23 Ainsi, pour ce qui est de Tite, il est notre associé et notre compagnon d'oeuvre auprès de vous; et pour ce qui est de nos frères, ils sont les envoyés des Eglises, la gloire de Christ.

24 Donnez-leur donc, à la face des Eglises, la preuve de votre charité, et montrez-leur que nous avons sujet de nous glorifier de vous.

2 In mezzo alle molte afflizioni con le quali esse sono provate, l’abbondanza della loro allegrezza e la loro profonda povertà hanno abbondato nelle ricchezze della loro liberalità.

3 Poiché, io ne rendo testimonianza, secondo il poter loro, anzi al di là del poter loro, hanno dato volenterosi,

4 chiedendoci con molte istanze la grazia di contribuire a questa sovvenzione destinata ai santi.

5 E l’hanno fatto non solo come avevamo sperato; ma prima si sono dati loro stessi al Signore, e poi a noi, per la volontà di Dio.

6 Talché abbiamo esortato Tito che, come l’ha già cominciata, così porti a compimento fra voi anche quest’opera di carità.

7 Ma siccome voi abbondate in ogni cosa, in fede, in parola, in conoscenza, in ogni zelo e nell’amore che avete per noi, vedete d’abbondare anche in quest’opera di carità.

8 Non lo dico per darvi un ordine, ma per mettere alla prova, con l’esempio dell’altrui premura, anche la schiettezza del vostro amore.

9 Perché voi conoscete la carità del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo il quale, essendo ricco, s’è fatto povero per amor vostro, onde, mediante la sua povertà, voi poteste diventar ricchi.

10 E qui vi do un consiglio; il che conviene a voi i quali fin dall’anno passato avete per i primi cominciato non solo a fare ma anche a volere:

11 Portate ora a compimento anche il fare; onde, come ci fu la prontezza del volere, così ci sia anche il compiere secondo i vostri mezzi.

12 Poiché, se c’è la prontezza dell’animo, essa è gradita in ragione di quello che uno ha, e non di quello che non ha.

13 Poiché questo non si fa per recar sollievo ad altri ed aggravio a voi, ma per principio di uguaglianza;

14 nelle attuali circostanze, la vostra abbondanza serve a supplire al loro bisogno, onde la loro abbondanza supplisca altresì al bisogno vostro, affinché ci sia uguaglianza, secondo che è scritto:

15 Chi avea raccolto molto non n’ebbe di soverchio, e chi avea raccolto poco, non n’ebbe mancanza.

16 Or ringraziato sia Iddio che ha messo in cuore a Tito lo stesso zelo per voi;

17 poiché non solo egli ha accettata la nostra esortazione, ma mosso da zelo anche maggiore si è spontaneamente posto in cammino per venire da voi.

18 E assieme a lui abbiam mandato questo fratello, la cui lode nella predicazione dell’Evangelo è sparsa per tutte le chiese;

19 non solo, ma egli è stato anche eletto dalle chiese a viaggiare con noi per quest’opera di carità, da noi amministrata per la gloria del Signore stesso e per dimostrare la prontezza dell’animo nostro.

20 Evitiamo così che qualcuno abbia a biasimarci circa quest’abbondante colletta che è da noi amministrata;

21 perché ci preoccupiamo d’agire onestamente non solo nel cospetto del Signore, ma anche nel cospetto degli uomini.

22 E con loro abbiamo mandato quel nostro fratello del quale spesse volte e in molte cose abbiamo sperimentato lo zelo, e che ora è più zelante che mai per la gran fiducia che ha in voi.

23 Quanto a Tito, egli è mio compagno e collaboratore in mezzo a voi; quanto ai nostri fratelli, essi sono gli inviati delle chiese, e gloria di Cristo.

24 Date loro dunque, nel cospetto delle chiese, la prova del vostro amore e mostrate loro che abbiamo ragione di gloriarci di voi.
