1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years. 2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God: 3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves: 4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment. 5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest. 7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered. 8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.

9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah. 10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee. 12 So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil. 14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them. 15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

1 Abija se coucha avec ses pères, et on l'enterra dans la ville de David. Et Asa, son fils, régna à sa place. De son temps, le pays fut en repos pendant dix ans.

2 Asa fit ce qui est bien et droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, son Dieu.

3 Il fit disparaître les autels de l'étranger et les hauts lieux, il brisa les statues et abattit les idoles.

4 Il ordonna à Juda de rechercher l'Eternel, le Dieu de ses pères, et de pratiquer la loi et les commandements.

5 Il fit disparaître de toutes les villes de Juda les hauts lieux et les statues consacrées au soleil. Et le royaume fut en repos devant lui.

6 Il bâtit des villes fortes en Juda; car le pays fut tranquille et il n'y eut pas de guerre contre lui pendant ces années-là, parce que l'Eternel lui donna du repos.

7 Il dit à Juda: Bâtissons ces villes, et entourons-les de murs, de tours, de portes et de barres; le pays est encore devant nous, car nous avons recherché l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'avons recherché, et il nous a donné du repos de tous côtés. Ils bâtirent donc, et réussirent.

8 Asa avait une armée de trois cent mille hommes de Juda, portant le bouclier et la lance, et de deux cent quatre-vingt mille de Benjamin, portant le bouclier et tirant de l'arc, tous vaillants hommes.

9 Zérach, l'Ethiopien, sortit contre eux avec une armée d'un million d'hommes et trois cents chars, et il s'avança jusqu'à Maréscha.

10 Asa marcha au-devant de lui, et ils se rangèrent en bataille dans la vallée de Tsephata, près de Maréscha.

11 Asa invoqua l'Eternel, son Dieu, et dit: Eternel, toi seul peux venir en aide au faible comme au fort: viens à notre aide, Eternel, notre Dieu! car c'est sur toi que nous nous appuyons, et nous sommes venus en ton nom contre cette multitude. Eternel, tu es notre Dieu: que ce ne soit pas l'homme qui l'emporte sur toi!

12 L'Eternel frappa les Ethiopiens devant Asa et devant Juda, et les Ethiopiens prirent la fuite.

13 Asa et le peuple qui était avec lui les poursuivirent jusqu'à Guérar, et les Ethiopiens tombèrent sans pouvoir sauver leur vie, car ils furent détruits par l'Eternel et par son armée. Asa et son peuple firent un très grand butin;

14 ils frappèrent toutes les villes des environs de Guérar, car la terreur de l'Eternel s'était emparée d'elles, et ils pillèrent toutes les villes, dont les dépouilles furent considérables.

15 Ils frappèrent aussi les tentes des troupeaux, et ils emmenèrent une grande quantité de brebis et de chameaux. Puis ils retournèrent à Jérusalem.

1 (13:23) E Abija s’addormentò coi suoi padri, e fu sepolto nella città di Davide; e Asa, suo figliuolo, egnò in luogo suo; e al suo tempo il paese ebbe requie per dieci anni.

2 (14:1) Asa fece ciò ch’è buono e retto agli occhi dell’Eterno, del suo Dio.

3 (14:2) Tolse via gli altari degli dèi stranieri, e gli alti luoghi; spezzò le statue, abbatté gl’idoli d’Astarte;

4 (14:3) e ordinò a Giuda di cercare l’Eterno, l’Iddio de’ suoi padri, e di mettere ad effetto la sua legge ed i suoi comandamenti.

5 (14:4) Tolse anche via da tutte le città di Giuda gli alti luoghi e le colonne solari; e, sotto di lui, il regno ebbe requie.

6 (14:5) Egli costruì delle città fortificate in Giuda, giacché il paese era tranquillo, e in quegli anni non v’era alcuna guerra contro di lui, perché l’Eterno gli avea data requie.

7 (14:6) Egli diceva a quei di Giuda: "Costruiamo queste città, e circondiamole di mura, di torri, di porte e di sbarre; il paese è ancora a nostra disposizione, perché abbiamo cercato l’Eterno, il nostro Dio; noi l’abbiamo cercato, ed egli ci ha dato riposo d’ogni intorno". Essi dunque si misero a costruire, e prosperarono.

8 (14:7) Asa aveva un esercito di trecentomila uomini di Giuda che portavano scudo e lancia, e di duecento ottantamila di Beniamino che portavano scudo e tiravan d’arco, tutti uomini forti e valorosi.

9 (14:8) Zerah, l’Etiopo, uscì contro di loro con un esercito d’un milione d’uomini e trecento carri, e si avanzò fino a Maresha.

10 (14:9) Asa gli mosse contro, e si disposero in ordine di battaglia nella valle di Tsefatha presso aresha.

11 (14:10) Allora Asa invocò l’Eterno, il suo Dio, disse: "O Eterno, per te non v’è differenza tra il dar soccorso a chi è in gran numero, e il darlo a chi è senza forza; soccorrici, o Eterno, o nostro Dio! poiché su te noi ci appoggiamo, e nel tuo nome siam venuti contro questa moltitudine. Tu sei l’Eterno, il nostro Dio; non la vinca l’uomo a petto di te!"

12 (14:11) E l’Eterno sconfisse gli Etiopi davanti ad Asa e davanti a Giuda, e gli Etiopi si diedero alla fuga.

13 (14:12) Ed Asa e la gente ch’era con lui li inseguirono fino a Gherar; e degli Etiopi ne caddero tanti, che non ne rimase più uno di vivo; poiché furono rotti davanti all’Eterno e davanti al suo esercito. E Asa ed i suoi portaron via un immenso bottino;

14 (14:13) e batteron tutte le città nei dintorni di Gherar, perché lo spavento dell’Eterno s’era impadronito d’esse; e quelli saccheggiarono tutte le città; perché v’era molto bottino;

15 (14:14) fecero pure man bassa sui chiusi delle mandre, e menaron via gran numero di pecore e di cammelli. Poi tornarono a Gerusalemme.
