1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. 4 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them. 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about. 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.

8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God. 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem. 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house: 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12 And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick. 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

14 And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses. 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. 16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it. 17 And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen. 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 19 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes. 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying, 21 Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book. 22 And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.

23 And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, 24 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah: 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched. 26 And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. 28 Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

29 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD. 31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. 32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.

1 Josias avait huit ans lorsqu'il devint roi, et il régna trente et un ans à Jérusalem.

2 Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel, et il marcha dans les voies de David, son père; il ne s'en détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.

3 La huitième année de son règne, comme il était encore jeune, il commença à rechercher le Dieu de David, son père; et la douzième année, il commença à purifier Juda et Jérusalem des hauts lieux, des idoles, des images taillées et des images en fonte.

4 On renversa devant lui les autels des Baals, et il abattit les statues consacrées au soleil qui étaient dessus; il brisa les idoles, les images taillées et les images en fonte, et les réduisit en poussière, et il répandit la poussière sur les sépulcres de ceux qui leur avaient sacrifié;

5 et il brûla les ossements des prêtres sur leurs autels. C'est ainsi qu'il purifia Juda et Jérusalem.

6 Dans les villes de Manassé, d'Ephraïm, de Siméon, et même de Nephthali, partout au milieu de leurs ruines,

7 il renversa les autels, il mit en pièces les idoles et les images taillées et les réduisit en poussière, et il abattit toutes les statues consacrées au soleil dans tout le pays d'Israël. Puis il retourna à Jérusalem.

8 La dix-huitième année de son règne, après qu'il eut purifié le pays et la maison, il envoya Schaphan, fils d'Atsalia, Maaséja, chef de la ville, et Joach, fils de Joachaz, l'archiviste, pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel, son Dieu.

9 Ils se rendirent auprès du souverain sacrificateur Hilkija, et on livra l'argent qui avait été apporté dans la maison de Dieu, et que les Lévites gardiens du seuil avaient recueilli de Manassé et d'Ephraïm et de tout le reste d'Israël, et de tout Juda et Benjamin et des habitants de Jérusalem.

10 On le remit entre les mains de ceux qui étaient chargés de faire exécuter l'ouvrage dans la maison de l'Eternel. Et ils l'employèrent pour ceux qui travaillaient aux réparations de la maison de l'Eternel,

11 pour les charpentiers et les maçons, pour les achats de pierres de taille et de bois destiné aux poutres et à la charpente des bâtiments qu'avaient détruits les rois de Juda.

12 Ces hommes agirent avec probité dans leur travail. Ils étaient placés sous l'inspection de Jachath et Abdias, Lévites d'entre les fils de Merari, et de Zacharie et Meschullam, d'entre les fils des Kehathites; tous ceux des Lévites qui étaient habiles musiciens surveillaient les manoeuvres

13 et dirigeaient tous les ouvriers occupés aux divers travaux; il y avait encore d'autres Lévites secrétaires, commissaires et portiers.

14 Au moment où l'on sortit l'argent qui avait été apporté dans la maison de l'Eternel, le sacrificateur Hilkija trouva le livre de la loi de l'Eternel donnée par Moïse.

15 Alors Hilkija prit la parole et dit à Schaphan, le secrétaire: J'ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison de l'Eternel. Et Hilkija donna le livre à Schaphan.

16 Schaphan apporta le livre au roi, et lui rendit aussi compte, en disant: Tes serviteurs ont fait tout ce qui leur a été commandé;

17 ils ont amassé l'argent qui se trouvait dans la maison de l'Eternel, et l'ont remis entre les mains des inspecteurs et des ouvriers.

18 Schaphan, le secrétaire, dit encore au roi: Le sacrificateur Hilkija m'a donné un livre. Et Schaphan le lut devant le roi.

19 Lorsque le roi entendit les paroles de la loi, il déchira ses vêtements.

20 Et le roi donna cet ordre à Hilkija, à Achikam, fils de Schaphan, à Abdon, fils de Michée, à Schaphan, le secrétaire, et à Asaja, serviteur du roi:

21 Allez, consultez l'Eternel pour moi et pour ce qui reste en Israël et en Juda, au sujet des paroles de ce livre qu'on a trouvé; car grande est la colère de l'Eternel qui s'est répandue sur nous, parce que nos pères n'ont point observé la parole de l'Eternel et n'ont point mis en pratique tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre.

22 Hilkija et ceux qu'avait désignés le roi allèrent auprès de la prophétesse Hulda, femme de Schallum, fils de Thokehath, fils de Hasra, gardien des vêtements. Elle habitait à Jérusalem, dans l'autre quartier de la ville. Après qu'ils eurent exprimé ce qu'ils avaient à lui dire,

23 elle leur répondit: Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Dites à l'homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi:

24 Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je vais faire venir des malheurs sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, toutes les malédictions écrites dans le livre qu'on a lu devant le roi de Juda.

25 Parce qu'ils m'ont abandonné et qu'ils ont offert des parfums à d'autres dieux, afin de m'irriter par tous les ouvrages de leurs mains, ma colère s'est répandue sur ce lieu, et elle ne s'éteindra point.

26 Mais vous direz au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l'Eternel: Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, au sujet des paroles que tu as entendues:

27 Parce que ton coeur a été touché, parce que tu t'es humilié devant Dieu en entendant ses paroles contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants, parce que tu t'es humilié devant moi, parce que tu as déchiré tes vêtements et que tu as pleuré devant moi, moi aussi, j'ai entendu, dit l'Eternel.

28 Voici, je te recueillerai auprès de tes pères, tu seras recueilli en paix dans ton sépulcre, et tes yeux ne verront pas tous les malheurs que je ferai venir sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants. Ils rapportèrent au roi cette réponse.

29 Le roi fit assembler tous les anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem.

30 Puis il monta à la maison de l'Eternel avec tous les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit. Il lut devant eux toutes les paroles du livre de l'alliance, qu'on avait trouvé dans la maison de l'Eternel.

31 Le roi se tenait sur son estrade, et il traita alliance devant l'Eternel, s'engageant à suivre l'Eternel, et à observer ses ordonnances, ses préceptes et ses lois, de tout son coeur et de toute son âme, afin de mettre en pratique les paroles de l'alliance écrites dans ce livre.

32 Et il fit entrer dans l'alliance tous ceux qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem et en Benjamin; et les habitants de Jérusalem agirent selon l'alliance de Dieu, du Dieu de leurs pères.

33 Josias fit disparaître toutes les abominations de tous les pays appartenant aux enfants d'Israël, et il obligea tous ceux qui se trouvaient en Israël à servir l'Eternel, leur Dieu. Pendant toute sa vie, ils ne se détournèrent point de l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.

1 Giosia aveva otto anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme.

2 Egli fece ciò ch’è giusto agli occhi dell’Eterno, e camminò per le vie di Davide suo padre senza scostarsene né a destra né a sinistra.

3 L’ottavo anno del suo regno, mentre era ancora giovinetto, cominciò a cercare l’Iddio di Davide suo padre; e il dodicesimo anno cominciò a purificare Giuda e Gerusalemme dagli alti luoghi, dagl’idoli d’Astarte, dalle immagini scolpite e dalle immagini fuse.

4 E in sua presenza furon demoliti gli altari de’ Baali e abbattute le colonne solari che v’eran sopra; e frantumò gl’idoli d’Astarte, le immagini scolpite e le statue; e le ridusse in polvere, che sparse sui sepolcri di quelli che aveano offerto loro de’ sacrifizi;

5 e bruciò le ossa dei sacerdoti sui loro altari, e così purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme.

6 Lo stesso fece nelle città di Manasse, d’Efraim, di Simeone, e fino a Neftali: da per tutto, in mezzo alle loro rovine,

7 demolì gli altari, frantumò e ridusse in polvere gl’idoli d’Astarte e le immagini scolpite, abbatté tutte le colonne solari in tutto il paese d’Israele, e tornò a Gerusalemme.

8 L’anno diciottesimo del suo regno, dopo aver purificato il paese e la casa dell’Eterno, mandò Shafan, figliuolo di Atsalia, Maaseia, governatore della città, e Joah, figliuolo di Joachaz, l’archivista, per restaurare la casa dell’Eterno, del suo Dio.

9 E quelli si recarono dal sommo sacerdote Hilkia, e fu loro consegnato il danaro ch’era stato portato nella casa di Dio, e che i Leviti custodi della soglia aveano raccolto in Manasse, in Efraim, in tutto il rimanente d’Israele, in tutto Giuda e Beniamino, e fra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

10 Ed essi lo rimisero nelle mani dei direttori preposti ai lavori della casa dell’Eterno, e i direttori lo dettero a quelli che lavoravano nella casa dell’Eterno per ripararla e restaurarla.

11 Lo dettero ai legnaiuoli ed ai costruttori, per comprar delle pietre da tagliare, e del legname per l’armatura e la travatura delle case che i re di Giuda aveano distrutte.

12 E quegli uomini facevano il loro lavoro con fedeltà; ed ad essi eran preposti Jahath e Obadia, Leviti di tra i figliuoli di Merari, e Zaccaria e Meshullam di tra i figliuoli di Kehath, per la direzione, e tutti quelli tra i Leviti ch’erano abili a sonare strumenti musicali.

13 Questi sorvegliavan pure i portatori di pesi, e dirigevano tutti gli operai occupati nei diversi lavori; e fra i Leviti addetti a que’ lavori ve n’eran di quelli ch’erano segretari, commissari, portinai.

14 Or mentre si traeva fuori il danaro ch’era stato portato nella casa dell’Eterno, il sacerdote Hilkia trovò il libro della Legge dell’Eterno, data per mezzo di Mosè.

15 E Hilkia parlò a Shafan, il segretario, e gli disse: "Ho trovato nella casa dell’Eterno il libro della legge". E Hilkia diede il libro a Shafan.

16 E Shafan portò il libro al re, e gli fece al tempo stesso la sua relazione, dicendo: "I tuoi servi hanno fatto tutto quello ch’è stato loro ordinato.

17 Hanno versato il danaro che s’è trovato nella casa dell’Eterno, e l’hanno consegnato a quelli che son preposti ai lavori e agli operai".

18 E Shafan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: "Il sacerdote Hilkia m’ha dato un libro". E Shafan lo lesse in presenza del re.

19 Quando il re ebbe udite le parole della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

20 Poi il re diede quest’ordine a Hilkia, ad Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan, ad Abdon, figliuolo di Mica, a hafan il segretario, e ad Asaia, servo del re:

21 "Andate a consultare l’Eterno per me e per ciò che rimane d’Israele e di Giuda, riguardo alle parole di questo libro che s’è trovato; giacché grande e l’ira dell’Eterno che s’è riversata su noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno osservata la parola dell’Eterno, e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello ch’è scritto in questo libro".

22 Hilkia e quelli che il re avea designati andarono dalla profetessa Hulda, moglie di Shallum, figliuolo di Tokhath, figliuolo di Hasra, il guardaroba. Essa dimorava a Gerusalemme, nel secondo quartiere; e quelli le parlarono nel senso indicato dal re.

23 Ed ella disse loro: "Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati da me:

24 Così dice l’Eterno: Ecco, io farò venire delle sciagure su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti, farò venire tutte le maledizioni che sono scritte nel libro, ch’è stato letto in presenza del re di Giuda.

25 Poiché essi m’hanno abbandonato ed hanno offerto profumi ad altri dèi per provocarmi ad ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani, la mia ira s’è riversata su questo luogo, e non si estinguerà.

26 Quanto al re di Giuda che v’ha mandati a consultare l’Eterno, gli direte questo: Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, riguardo alle parole che tu hai udite:

27 Giacché il tuo cuore è stato toccato, giacché ti sei umiliato dinanzi a Dio, udendo le sue parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, giacché ti sei umiliato dinanzi a me e ti sei stracciate le vesti e ai pianto dinanzi a me, anch’io t’ho ascoltato, dice l’Eterno.

28 Ecco, io ti riunirò coi tuoi padri, e sarai raccolto in pace nel tuo sepolcro; e gli occhi tuoi non vedranno tutte le sciagure ch’io farò venire su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti". E quelli riferirono al re la risposta.

29 Allora il re mandò a far raunare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

30 E il re salì alla casa dell’Eterno con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e tutto il popolo, grandi e piccoli, e lesse in loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, ch’era stato trovato nella casa dell’Eterno.

31 Il re, stando in piedi sul palco, fece un patto dinanzi all’Eterno, impegnandosi di seguire l’Eterno, d’osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e le sue leggi con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, per mettere in pratica le parole del patto scritte in quel libro.

32 E fece aderire al patto tutti quelli che si trovavano a Gerusalemme e in Beniamino; e gli abitanti di erusalemme si conformarono al patto di Dio, dell’Iddio de’ loro padri.

33 E Giosia fece sparire tutte le abominazioni da tutti i paesi che appartenevano ai figliuoli d’Israele, e impose a tutti quelli che si trovavano in Israele, di servire all’Eterno, al loro Dio. Durante tutto il tempo della vita di Giosia essi non cessarono di seguire l’Eterno, l’Iddio dei loro padri.
