1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. 2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. 3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. 4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. 5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. 6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. 9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. 14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. 15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. 17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well. 24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee. 25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. 27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? 29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. 39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. 41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

42 And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. 43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. 44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.

1 Une femme d'entre les femmes des fils des prophètes cria à Elisée, en disant: Ton serviteur mon mari est mort, et tu sais que ton serviteur craignait l'Eternel; or le créancier est venu pour prendre mes deux enfants et en faire ses esclaves.

2 Elisée lui dit: Que puis-je faire pour toi? Dis-moi, qu'as-tu à la maison? Elle répondit: Ta servante n'a rien du tout à la maison qu'un vase d'huile.

3 Et il dit: Va demander au dehors des vases chez tous tes voisins, des vases vides, et n'en demande pas un petit nombre.

4 Quand tu seras rentrée, tu fermeras la porte sur toi et sur tes enfants; tu verseras dans tous ces vases, et tu mettras de côté ceux qui seront pleins.

5 Alors elle le quitta. Elle ferma la porte sur elle et sur ses enfants; ils lui présentaient les vases, et elle versait.

6 Lorsque les vases furent pleins, elle dit à son fils: Présente-moi encore un vase. Mais il lui répondit: Il n'y a plus de vase. Et l'huile s'arrêta.

7 Elle alla le rapporter à l'homme de Dieu, et il dit: Va vendre l'huile, et paie ta dette; et tu vivras, toi et tes fils, de ce qui restera.

8 Un jour Elisée passait par Sunem. Il y avait là une femme de distinction, qui le pressa d'accepter à manger. Et toutes les fois qu'il passait, il se rendait chez elle pour manger.

9 Elle dit à son mari: Voici, je sais que cet homme qui passe toujours chez nous est un saint homme de Dieu.

10 Faisons une petite chambre haute avec des murs, et mettons-y pour lui un lit, une table, un siège et un chandelier, afin qu'il s'y retire quand il viendra chez nous.

11 Elisée, étant revenu à Sunem, se retira dans la chambre haute et y coucha.

12 Il dit à Guéhazi, son serviteur: Appelle cette Sunamite. Guéhazi l'appela, et elle se présenta devant lui.

13 Et Elisée dit à Guéhazi: Dis-lui: Voici, tu nous as montré tout cet empressement; que peut-on faire pour toi? Faut-il parler pour toi au roi ou au chef de l'armée? Elle répondit: J'habite au milieu de mon peuple.

14 Et il dit: Que faire pour elle? Guéhazi répondit: Mais, elle n'a point de fils, et son mari est vieux.

15 Et il dit: Appelle-la. Guéhazi l'appela, et elle se présenta à la porte.

16 Elisée lui dit: A cette même époque, l'année prochaine, tu embrasseras un fils. Et elle dit: Non! mon seigneur, homme de Dieu, ne trompe pas ta servante!

17 Cette femme devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils à la même époque, l'année suivante, comme Elisée lui avait dit.

18 L'enfant grandit. Et un jour qu'il était allé trouver son père vers les moissonneurs,

19 il dit à son père: Ma tête! ma tête! Le père dit à son serviteur: Porte-le à sa mère.

20 Le serviteur l'emporta et l'amena à sa mère. Et l'enfant resta sur les genoux de sa mère jusqu'à midi, puis il mourut.

21 Elle monta, le coucha sur le lit de l'homme de Dieu, ferma la porte sur lui, et sortit.

22 Elle appela son mari, et dit: Envoie-moi, je te prie, un des serviteurs et une des ânesses; je veux aller en hâte vers l'homme de Dieu, et je reviendrai.

23 Et il dit: Pourquoi veux-tu aller aujourd'hui vers lui? Ce n'est ni nouvelle lune ni sabbat. Elle répondit: Tout va bien.

24 Puis elle fit seller l'ânesse, et dit à son serviteur: Mène et pars; ne m'arrête pas en route sans que je te le dise.

25 Elle partit donc et se rendit vers l'homme de Dieu sur la montagne du Carmel. L'homme de Dieu, l'ayant aperçue de loin, dit à Guéhazi, son serviteur: Voici cette Sunamite!

26 Maintenant, cours donc à sa rencontre, et dis-lui: Te portes-tu bien? Ton mari et ton enfant se portent-ils bien? Elle répondit: Bien.

27 Et dès qu'elle fut arrivée auprès de l'homme de Dieu sur la montagne, elle embrassa ses pieds. Guéhazi s'approcha pour la repousser. Mais l'homme de Dieu dit: Laisse-la, car son âme est dans l'amertume, et l'Eternel me l'a caché et ne me l'a point fait connaître.

28 Alors elle dit: Ai-je demandé un fils à mon seigneur? N'ai-je pas dit: Ne me trompe pas?

29 Et Elisée dit à Guéhazi: Ceins tes reins, prends mon bâton dans ta main, et pars. Si tu rencontres quelqu'un, ne le salue pas; et si quelqu'un te salue, ne lui réponds pas. Tu mettras mon bâton sur le visage de l'enfant.

30 La mère de l'enfant dit: L'Eternel est vivant et ton âme est vivante! je ne te quitterai point. Et il se leva et la suivit.

31 Guéhazi les avait devancés, et il avait mis le bâton sur le visage de l'enfant; mais il n'y eut ni voix ni signe d'attention. Il s'en retourna à la rencontre d'Elisée, et lui rapporta la chose, en disant: L'enfant ne s'est pas réveillé.

32 Lorsque Elisée arriva dans la maison, voici, l'enfant était mort, couché sur son lit.

33 Elisée entra et ferma la porte sur eux deux, et il pria l'Eternel.

34 Il monta, et se coucha sur l'enfant; il mit sa bouche sur sa bouche, ses yeux sur ses yeux, ses mains sur ses mains, et il s'étendit sur lui. Et la chair de l'enfant se réchauffa.

35 Elisée s'éloigna, alla çà et là par la maison, puis remonta et s'étendit sur l'enfant. Et l'enfant éternua sept fois, et il ouvrit les yeux.

36 Elisée appela Guéhazi, et dit: Appelle cette Sunamite. Guéhazi l'appela, et elle vint vers Elisée, qui dit: Prends ton fils!

37 Elle alla se jeter à ses pieds, et se prosterna contre terre. Et elle prit son fils, et sortit.

38 Elisée revint à Guilgal, et il y avait une famine dans le pays. Comme les fils des prophètes étaient assis devant lui, il dit à son serviteur: Mets le grand pot, et fais cuire un potage pour les fils des prophètes.

39 L'un d'eux sortit dans les champs pour cueillir des herbes; il trouva de la vigne sauvage et il y cueillit des coloquintes sauvages, plein son vêtement. Quand il rentra, il les coupa en morceaux dans le pot où était le potage, car on ne les connaissait pas.

40 On servit à manger à ces hommes; mais dès qu'ils eurent mangé du potage, ils s'écrièrent: La mort est dans le pot, homme de Dieu! Et ils ne purent manger.

41 Elisée dit: Prenez de la farine. Il en jeta dans le pot, et dit: Sers à ces gens, et qu'ils mangent. Et il n'y avait plus rien de mauvais dans le pot.

42 Un homme arriva de Baal-Schalischa. Il apporta du pain des prémices à l'homme de Dieu, vingt pains d'orge, et des épis nouveaux dans son sac. Elisée dit: Donne à ces gens, et qu'ils mangent.

43 Son serviteur répondit: Comment pourrais-je en donner à cent personnes? Mais Elisée dit: Donne à ces gens, et qu'ils mangent; car ainsi parle l'Eternel: On mangera, et on en aura de reste.

44 Il mit alors les pains devant eux; et ils mangèrent et en eurent de reste, selon la parole de l'Eternel.

1 Or una donna di tra le mogli de’ discepoli de’ profeti esclamò e disse ad Eliseo: "Il mio marito, tuo servo, è morto; e tu sai che il tuo servo temeva l’Eterno; e il suo creditore è venuto per prendersi i miei due figliuoli e farsene degli schiavi".

2 Eliseo le disse: "Che debbo io fare per te? Dimmi; che hai tu in casa?" Ella rispose: "La tua serva non ha nulla in casa, tranne un vasetto d’olio".

3 Allora egli disse: "Va’ fuori, chiedi in prestito da tutti i tuoi vicini de’ vasi vuoti; e non ne chieder pochi.

4 Poi torna, serra l’uscio dietro a te ed ai tuoi figliuoli, e versa dell’olio in tutti que’ vasi; e, man mano che saran pieni, falli mettere da parte".

5 Ella dunque si partì da lui, e si chiuse in casa coi suoi figliuoli; questi le portavano i vasi, ed ella vi versava l’olio.

6 E quando i vasi furono pieni, ella disse al suo figliuolo: "Portami ancora un vaso". Quegli le rispose: Non ce n’è più dei vasi". E l’olio si fermò.

7 Allora ella andò e riferì tutto all’uomo di Dio, che le disse: "Va’ a vender l’olio, e paga il tuo debito; e di quel che resta sostentati tu ed i tuoi figliuoli".

8 Or avvenne che un giorno Eliseo passava per Shunem, e c’era quivi una donna ricca che lo trattenne con premura perché prendesse cibo da lei; e tutte le volte che passava di là, si recava da lei a mangiare.

9 Ed ella disse a suo marito: "Ecco, io son convinta che quest’uomo che passa sempre da noi, e un santo uomo di Dio.

10 Ti prego, facciamogli costruire, di sopra, una piccola camera in muratura, e mettiamoci per lui un letto, un tavolino, una sedia e un candeliere, affinché, quando verrà da noi, egli possa ritirarvisi".

11 Così, un giorno ch’egli giunse a Shunem, si ritirò su in quella camera, e vi dormì.

12 E disse a Ghehazi, suo servo: "Chiama questa Shunamita". Quegli la chiamò, ed ella si presentò davanti a lui.

13 Ed Eliseo disse a Ghehazi: "Or dille così: Ecco, tu hai avuto per noi tutta questa premura; che si può fare per te? Hai bisogno che si parli per te al re o al capo dell’esercito?" Ella rispose:

14 "Io vivo in mezzo al mio popolo". Ed Eliseo disse: "Che si potrebbe fare per lei?" Ghehazi rispose: Ma! Ella non ha figliuoli, e il suo marito è vecchio".

15 Eliseo gli disse: "Chiamala!" Ghehazi la chiamò, ed ella si presentò alla porta.

16 Ed Eliseo le disse: "L’anno prossimo, in questo stesso tempo, tu abbraccerai un figliuolo". Ella rispose: "No, signor mio, tu che sei un uomo di Dio, non ingannare la tua serva!"

17 E questa donna concepì e partorì un figliuolo, in quel medesimo tempo, l’anno dopo, come Eliseo le aveva detto.

18 Il bambino si fe’ grande; e, un giorno ch’era uscito per andare da suo padre presso i mietitori,

19 disse a suo padre: "Oh! la mia testa! la mia testa!" Il padre disse al suo servo: "Portalo a sua madre!"

20 Il servo lo portò via e lo recò a sua madre. Il fanciullo rimase sulle ginocchia di lei fino a mezzogiorno, poi si morì.

21 Allora ella salì, lo adagiò sul letto dell’uomo di Dio, chiuse la porta, ed uscì.

22 E, chiamato il suo marito, disse: "Ti prego, mandami uno de’ servi e un’asina, perché voglio correre dall’uomo di Dio, e tornare".

23 Il marito le chiese: "Perché vuoi andar da lui quest’oggi? Non è il novilunio, e non è sabato". Ella rispose: "Lascia fare!"

24 Poi fece sellar l’asina, e disse al suo servo: "Guidala, e tira via; non mi fermare per istrada, a meno ch’io tel dica".

25 Ella dunque partì, e giunse dall’uomo di Dio, sul monte Carmel. E come l’uomo di Dio l’ebbe scorta di lontano, disse a Ghehazi, suo servo: "Ecco la Shunamita che viene!

26 Ti prego, corri ad incontrarla, e dille: Stai bene? Sta bene tuo marito? E il bimbo sta bene?" Ella rispose: "Stanno bene".

27 E come fu giunta dall’uomo di Dio, sul monte, gli abbracciò i piedi. Ghehazi si appressò per respingerla; ma l’uomo di Dio disse: "Lasciala stare, poiché l’anima sua e in amarezza, e l’Eterno me l’ha nascosto, e non me l’ha rivelato".

28 La donna disse: "Avevo io forse domandato al mio signore un figliuolo? Non ti diss’io: Non m’ingannare?"

29 Allora Eliseo disse a Ghehazi: "Cingiti i fianchi, prendi in mano il mio bastone e parti. Se t’imbatti in qualcuno, non lo salutare; e se alcuno ti saluta, non gli rispondere; e poserai il mio bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo".

30 La madre del fanciullo disse ad Eliseo: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno vive, e che vive l’anima tua, io non ti lascerò". Ed Eliseo si levò e le andò appresso.

31 Or Ghehazi, che li avea preceduti, pose il bastone sulla faccia del fanciullo, ma non ci fu né voce né segno alcuno di vita. Tornò quindi incontro ad Eliseo, e gli riferì la cosa, dicendo: "Il fanciullo non s’è svegliato".

32 E quando Eliseo arrivò in casa, ecco che il fanciullo era morto e adagiato sul letto di lui.

33 Egli entrò, si chiuse dentro col fanciullo, e pregò l’Eterno.

34 Poi salì sul letto e si coricò sul fanciullo; pose la sua bocca sulla bocca di lui, i suoi occhi sugli occhi di lui, le sue mani sulle mani di lui; si distese sopra di lui, e le carni del fanciullo si riscaldarono.

35 Poi Eliseo s’allontanò, andò qua e là per la casa; poi risalì, e si ridistese sopra il fanciullo; e il fanciullo starnutì sette volte, ed aperse gli occhi.

36 Allora Eliseo chiamò Ghehazi, e gli disse: "Chiama questa Shunamita". Egli la chiamò; e com’ella fu giunta da Eliseo, questi le disse: "Prendi il tuo figliuolo".

37 Ed ella entrò, gli si gettò ai piedi, e si prostrò in terra; poi prese il suo figliuolo, ed uscì.

38 Eliseo se ne tornò a Ghilgal, e v’era carestia nel paese. Or mentre i discepoli de’ profeti stavan seduti davanti a lui, egli disse al suo servo: "Metti il marmittone al fuoco, e cuoci una minestra per i discepoli dei profeti".

39 E uno di questi uscì fuori nei campi per coglier delle erbe; trovò una specie di vite salvatica, ne colse delle colloquintide, e se n’empì la veste; e, tornato che fu, le tagliò a pezzi nella marmitta dov’era la minestra; perché non si sapeva che cosa fossero.

40 Poi versarono della minestra a quegli uomini perché mangiassero; ma com’essi l’ebbero gustata, esclamarono: "C’è la morte, nella marmitta, o uomo di Dio!" E non ne poteron mangiare.

41 Eliseo disse: "Ebbene, portatemi della farina!" La gettò nella marmitta, e disse: "Versatene a questa gente che mangi". E non c’era più nulla di cattivo nella marmitta.

42 Giunse poi un uomo da Baal-Shalisha, che portò all’uomo di Dio del pane delle primizie: venti pani d’orzo, e del grano nuovo nella sua bisaccia. Eliseo disse al suo servo: "Danne alla gente che mangi".

43 Quegli rispose: "Come fare a por questo davanti a cento persone?" Ma Eliseo disse: "Danne alla gente che mangi; perché così dice l’Eterno: Mangeranno, e ne avanzerà".

44 Così egli pose quelle provviste davanti alla gente, che mangiò e ne lasciò d’avanzo, secondo la parola dell’Eterno.
