1 And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: 3 But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4 And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. 5 And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: 6 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

7 And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things. 9 Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10 Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. 11 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. 12 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. 13 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die. 14 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

15 And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. 16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead? 19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead. 20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread. 22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live? 23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him. 25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

26 And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27 And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters. 28 Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name. 29 And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. 30 And he took their king’s crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David’s head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance. 31 And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

1 L'Eternel envoya Nathan vers David. Et Nathan vint à lui, et lui dit: Il y avait dans une ville deux hommes, l'un riche et l'autre pauvre.

2 Le riche avait des brebis et des boeufs en très grand nombre.

3 Le pauvre n'avait rien du tout qu'une petite brebis, qu'il avait achetée; il la nourrissait, et elle grandissait chez lui avec ses enfants; elle mangeait de son pain, buvait dans sa coupe, dormait sur son sein, et il la regardait comme sa fille.

4 Un voyageur arriva chez l'homme riche. Et le riche n'a pas voulu toucher à ses brebis ou à ses boeufs, pour préparer un repas au voyageur qui était venu chez lui; il a pris la brebis du pauvre, et l'a apprêtée pour l'homme qui était venu chez lui.

5 La colère de David s'enflamma violemment contre cet homme, et il dit à Nathan: L'Eternel est vivant! L'homme qui a fait cela mérite la mort.

6 Et il rendra quatre brebis, pour avoir commis cette action et pour avoir été sans pitié.

7 Et Nathan dit à David: Tu es cet homme-là! Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Je t'ai oint pour roi sur Israël, et je t'ai délivré de la main de Saül;

8 je t'ai mis en possession de la maison de ton maître, j'ai placé dans ton sein les femmes de ton maître, et je t'ai donné la maison d'Israël et de Juda. Et si cela eût été peu, j'y aurais encore ajouté.

9 Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé la parole de l'Eternel, en faisant ce qui est mal à ses yeux? Tu as frappé de l'épée Urie, le Héthien; tu as pris sa femme pour en faire ta femme, et lui, tu l'as tué par l'épée des fils d'Ammon.

10 Maintenant, l'épée ne s'éloignera jamais de ta maison, parce que tu m'as méprisé, et parce que tu as pris la femme d'Urie, le Héthien, pour en faire ta femme.

11 Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je vais faire sortir de ta maison le malheur contre toi, et je vais prendre sous tes yeux tes propres femmes pour les donner à un autre, qui couchera avec elles à la vue de ce soleil.

12 Car tu as agi en secret; et moi, je ferai cela en présence de tout Israël et à la face du soleil.

13 David dit à Nathan: J'ai péché contre l'Eternel! Et Nathan dit à David: L'Eternel pardonne ton péché, tu ne mourras point.

14 Mais, parce que tu as fait blasphémer les ennemis de l'Eternel, en commettant cette action, le fils qui t'est né mourra.

15 Et Nathan s'en alla dans sa maison. L'Eternel frappa l'enfant que la femme d'Urie avait enfanté à David, et il fut dangereusement malade.

16 David pria Dieu pour l'enfant, et jeûna; et quand il rentra, il passa la nuit couché par terre.

17 Les anciens de sa maison insistèrent auprès de lui pour le faire lever de terre; mais il ne voulut point, et il ne mangea rien avec eux.

18 Le septième jour, l'enfant mourut. Les serviteurs de David craignaient de lui annoncer que l'enfant était mort. Car ils disaient: Voici, lorsque l'enfant vivait encore, nous lui avons parlé, et il ne nous a pas écoutés; comment oserons-nous lui dire: L'enfant est mort? Il s'affligera bien davantage.

19 David aperçut que ses serviteurs parlaient tout bas entre eux, et il comprit que l'enfant était mort. Il dit à ses serviteurs: L'enfant est-il mort? Et ils répondirent: Il est mort.

20 Alors David se leva de terre. Il se lava, s'oignit, et changea de vêtements; puis il alla dans la maison de l'Eternel, et se prosterna. De retour chez lui, il demanda qu'on lui servît à manger, et il mangea.

21 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: Que signifie ce que tu fais? Tandis que l'enfant vivait, tu jeûnais et tu pleurais; et maintenant que l'enfant est mort, tu te lèves et tu manges!

22 Il répondit: Lorsque l'enfant vivait encore, je jeûnais et je pleurais, car je disais: Qui sait si l'Eternel n'aura pas pitié de moi et si l'enfant ne vivra pas?

23 Maintenant qu'il est mort, pourquoi jeûnerais-je? Puis-je le faire revenir? J'irai vers lui, mais il ne reviendra pas vers moi.

24 David consola Bath-Schéba, sa femme, et il alla auprès d'elle et coucha avec elle. Elle enfanta un fils qu'il appela Salomon, et qui fut aimé de l'Eternel.

25 Il le remit entre les mains de Nathan le prophète, et Nathan lui donna le nom de Jedidja, à cause de l'Eternel.

26 Joab, qui assiégeait Rabba des fils d'Ammon, s'empara de la ville royale,

27 et envoya des messagers à David pour lui dire: J'ai attaqué Rabba, et je me suis déjà emparé de la ville des eaux;

28 rassemble maintenant le reste du peuple, campe contre la ville, et prends-la, de peur que je ne la prenne moi-même et que la gloire ne m'en soit attribuée.

29 David rassembla tout le peuple, et marcha sur Rabba; il l'attaqua, et s'en rendit maître.

30 Il enleva la couronne de dessus la tête de son roi: elle pesait un talent d'or et était garnie de pierres précieuses. On la mit sur la tête de David, qui emporta de la ville un très grand butin.

31 Il fit sortir les habitants, et il les plaça sous des scies, des herses de fer et des haches de fer, et les fit passer par des fours à briques; il traita de même toutes les villes des fils d'Ammon. David retourna à Jérusalem avec tout le peuple.

1 E l’Eterno mandò Nathan a Davide; e Nathan andò da lui e gli disse: "V’erano due uomini nella stessa città, uno ricco, e l’altro povero.

2 Il ricco avea pecore e buoi in grandissimo numero;

3 ma il povero non aveva nulla, fuorché una piccola agnellina ch’egli avea comprata e allevata; essa gli era cresciuta in casa insieme ai figliuoli, mangiando il pane di lui, bevendo alla sua coppa e dormendo sul suo seno; ed essa era per lui come una figliuola.

4 Or essendo arrivato un viaggiatore a casa dell’uomo ricco, questi, risparmiando le sue pecore e i suoi buoi, non ne prese per preparare un pasto al viaggiatore ch’era capitato da lui; ma pigliò l’agnella di quel povero uomo, e ne fece delle vivande per colui che gli era venuto in casa".

5 Allora l’ira di Davide s’accese fortemente contro quell’uomo, e disse a Nathan: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno vive, colui che ha fatto questo merita la morte;

6 e pagherà quattro volte il valore dell’agnella, per aver fatto una tal cosa e non aver avuto pietà".

7 Allora Nathan disse a Davide: "Tu sei quell’uomo! Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: Io t’ho unto re d’Israele e t’ho liberato dalle mani di Saul,

8 t’ho dato la casa del tuo signore, e ho messo nelle tue braccia le donne del tuo signore; t’ho dato la casa d’Israele e di Giuda; e, se questo era troppo poco, io v’avrei aggiunto anche dell’altro.

9 Perché dunque hai tu disprezzata la parola dell’Eterno, facendo ciò ch’è male agli occhi suoi? Tu hai atto morire colla spada Uria lo Hitteo, hai preso per tua moglie la moglie sua, e hai ucciso lui con la spada dei figliuoli di Ammon.

10 Or dunque la spada non si allontanerà mai dalla tua casa, giacché tu m’hai disprezzato hai preso per tua moglie la moglie di Uria lo Hitteo.

11 Così dice l’Eterno: Ecco, io sto per suscitare contro di te la sciagura dalla tua stessa casa, e prenderò le tue mogli sotto i tuoi occhi per darle a un tuo prossimo, che si giacerà con esse in faccia a questo sole;

12 poiché tu l’hai fatto in segreto; ma io farò questo davanti a tutto Israele e in faccia al sole".

13 Allora Davide disse a Nathan: "Ho peccato contro l’Eterno". E Nathan rispose a Davide: "E l’Eterno ha perdonato il tuo peccato; tu non morrai.

14 Nondimeno, siccome facendo così tu hai data ai nemici dell’Eterno ampia occasione di bestemmiare, il figliuolo che t’è nato dovrà morire". Nathan se ne tornò a casa sua.

15 E l’Eterno colpì il bambino che la moglie di Uria avea partorito a Davide, ed esso cadde gravemente ammalato.

16 Davide quindi fece supplicazioni a Dio per il bambino, e digiunò; poi venne e passò la notte giacendo per terra.

17 Gli anziani della sua casa insistettero presso di lui perch’egli si levasse da terra; ma egli non volle, e rifiutò di prender cibo con essi.

18 Or avvenne che il settimo giorno il bambino morì; e i servi di Davide temevano di fargli sapere che il bambino era morto; poiché dicevano: "Ecco, quando il bambino era ancora vivo, noi gli abbiam parlato ed egli non ha dato ascolto alle nostre parole; come faremo ora a dirgli che il bambino è morto? Egli andrà a qualche estremo".

19 Ma Davide, vedendo che i suoi servi bisbigliavano fra loro, comprese che il bambino era morto; e disse ai suoi servi: "E’ morto il bambino?" Quelli risposero: "E’ morto".

20 Allora Davide si alzò da terra, si lavò, si unse e si mutò le vesti; poi andò nella casa dell’Eterno e vi si prostrò; e tornato a casa sua, chiese che gli portassero da mangiare, e mangiò.

21 I suoi servi gli dissero: "Che cosa fai? Quando il bambino era vivo ancora, tu digiunavi e piangevi; e ora ch’è morto, ti alzi e mangi!"

22 Egli rispose: "Quando il bambino era vivo ancora, digiunavo e piangevo, perché dicevo: Chi sa che l’Eterno non abbia pietà di me e il bambino non resti in vita? Ma ora ch’egli è morto, perché digiunerei?

23 Posso io farlo ritornare? Io me ne andrò a lui, ma egli non ritornerà a me!"

24 Poi Davide consolò Bath-Sheba sua moglie, entrò da lei e si giacque con essa; ed ella partorì un figliuolo, al quale egli pose nome Salomone.

25 L’Eterno amò Salomone e mandò il profeta Nathan che gli pose nome Iedidia, a motivo dell’amore che l’Eterno gli portava.

26 Or Joab assediò Rabba dei figliuoli di Ammon, s’impadronì della città reale,

27 e inviò dei messi a Davide per dirgli: "Ho assalito Rabba e mi son già impossessato della città delle acque.

28 Or dunque raduna il rimanente del popolo, accampati contro la città, e prendila, affinché, prendendola io, non abbia a portare il mio nome".

29 Davide radunò tutto il popolo, si mosse verso Rabba, l’assalì e la prese;

30 e tolse dalla testa del loro re la corona, che pesava un talento d’oro e conteneva pietre preziose, ed essa fu posta sulla testa di Davide. Egli riporto anche dalla città grandissima preda.

31 Fece uscire gli abitanti ch’erano nella città, e mise i loro corpi sotto delle seghe, degli erpici di ferro e delle scuri di ferro, e li fe’ gettare in fornaci da mattoni; e così fece a tutte le città de’ figliuoli di Ammon. Poi Davide se ne tornò a Gerusalemme con tutto il popolo.
