1 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom. 2 And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son. 3 And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. 4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son! 5 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines; 6 In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well. 7 Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now. 8 Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

9 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom. 10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house. 12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king? 13 And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab. 14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants. 15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. 18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan; 19 And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart. 20 For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king. 21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed? 22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel? 23 Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. 25 And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth? 26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame. 27 And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes. 28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king? 29 And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land. 30 And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.

31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan. 32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. 34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem? 35 I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king? 36 Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward? 37 Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee. 38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee. 39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan? 42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift? 43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

1 On vint dire à Joab: Voici, le roi pleure et se lamente à cause d'Absalom.

2 Et la victoire, ce jour-là, fut changée en deuil pour tout le peuple, car en ce jour le peuple entendait dire: Le roi est affligé à cause de son fils.

3 Ce même jour, le peuple rentra dans la ville à la dérobée, comme l'auraient fait des gens honteux d'avoir pris la fuite dans le combat.

4 Le roi s'était couvert le visage, et il criait à haute voix: Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils, mon fils!

5 Joab entra dans la chambre où était le roi, et dit: Tu couvres aujourd'hui de confusion la face de tous tes serviteurs, qui ont aujourd'hui sauvé ta vie, celle de tes fils et de tes filles, celle de tes femmes et de tes concubines.

6 Tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et tu hais ceux qui t'aiment, car tu montres aujourd'hui qu'il n'y a pour toi ni chefs ni serviteurs; et je vois maintenant que, si Absalom vivait et que nous fussions tous morts en ce jour, cela serait agréable à tes yeux.

7 Lève-toi donc, sors, et parle au coeur de tes serviteurs! Car je jure par l'Eternel que, si tu ne sors pas, il ne restera pas un homme avec toi cette nuit; et ce sera pour toi pire que tous les malheurs qui te sont arrivés depuis ta jeunesse jusqu'à présent.

8 Alors le roi se leva, et il s'assit à la porte. On fit dire à tout le peuple: Voici, le roi est assis à la porte. Et tout le peuple vint devant le roi. Cependant Israël s'était enfui, chacun dans sa tente.

9 Et dans toutes les tribus d'Israël, tout le peuple était en contestation, disant: Le roi nous a délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, c'est lui qui nous a sauvés de la main des Philistins; et maintenant il a dû fuir du pays devant Absalom.

10 Or Absalom, que nous avions oint pour qu'il régnât sur nous, est mort dans la bataille: pourquoi ne parlez-vous pas de faire revenir le roi?

11 De son côté, le roi David envoya dire aux sacrificateurs Tsadok et Abiathar: Parlez aux anciens de Juda, et dites-leur: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi dans sa maison? -Car ce qui se disait dans tout Israël était parvenu jusqu'au roi.

12 Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes mes os et ma chair; pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à ramener le roi?

13 Vous direz aussi à Amasa: N'es-tu pas mon os et ma chair? Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne deviens pas devant moi pour toujours chef de l'armée à la place de Joab!

14 David fléchit le coeur de tous ceux de Juda, comme s'ils n'eussent été qu'un seul homme; et ils envoyèrent dire au roi: Reviens, toi, et tous tes serviteurs.

15 Le roi revint et arriva jusqu'au Jourdain; et Juda se rendit à Guilgal, afin d'aller à la rencontre du roi et de lui faire passer le Jourdain.

16 Schimeï, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui était de Bachurim, se hâta de descendre avec ceux de Juda à la rencontre du roi David.

17 Il avait avec lui mille hommes de Benjamin, et Tsiba, serviteur de la maison de Saül, et les quinze fils et les vingt serviteurs de Tsiba. Ils passèrent le Jourdain à la vue du roi.

18 Le bateau, mis à la disposition du roi, faisait la traversée pour transporter sa maison; et au moment où le roi allait passer le Jourdain, Schimeï, fils de Guéra, se prosterna devant lui.

19 Et il dit au roi: Que mon seigneur ne tienne pas compte de mon iniquité, qu'il oublie que ton serviteur l'a offensé le jour où le roi mon seigneur sortait de Jérusalem, et que le roi n'y ait point égard!

20 Car ton serviteur reconnaît qu'il a péché. Et voici, je viens aujourd'hui le premier de toute la maison de Joseph à la rencontre du roi mon seigneur.

21 Alors Abischaï, fils de Tseruja, prit la parole et dit: Schimeï ne doit-il pas mourir pour avoir maudit l'oint de l'Eternel?

22 Mais David dit: Qu'ai-je affaire avec vous, fils de Tseruja, et pourquoi vous montrez-vous aujourd'hui mes adversaires? Aujourd'hui ferait-on mourir un homme en Israël? Ne sais-je donc pas que je règne aujourd'hui sur Israël?

23 Et le roi dit à Schimeï: Tu ne mourras point! Et le roi le lui jura.

24 Mephiboscheth, fils de Saül, descendit aussi à la rencontre du roi. Il n'avait point soigné ses pieds, ni fait sa barbe, ni lavé ses vêtements, depuis le jour où le roi s'en était allé jusqu'à celui où il revenait en paix.

25 Lorsqu'il se rendit au-devant du roi à Jérusalem, le roi lui dit: Pourquoi n'es-tu pas venu avec moi, Mephiboscheth?

26 Et il répondit: O roi mon seigneur, mon serviteur m'a trompé, car ton serviteur, qui est boiteux, avait dit: Je ferai seller mon âne, je le monterai, et j'irai avec le roi.

27 Et il a calomnié ton serviteur auprès de mon seigneur le roi. Mais mon seigneur le roi est comme un ange de Dieu. Fais ce qui te semblera bon.

28 Car tous ceux de la maison de mon père n'ont été que des gens dignes de mort devant le roi mon seigneur; et cependant tu as mis ton serviteur au nombre de ceux qui mangent à ta table. Quel droit puis-je encore avoir, et qu'ai-je à demander au roi?

29 Le roi lui dit: A quoi bon toutes tes paroles? Je l'ai déclaré: Toi et Tsiba, vous partagerez les terres.

30 Et Mephiboscheth dit au roi: Qu'il prenne même le tout, puisque le roi mon seigneur rentre en paix dans sa maison.

31 Barzillaï, le Galaadite, descendit de Roguelim, et passa le Jourdain avec le roi, pour l'accompagner jusqu'au delà du Jourdain.

32 Barzillaï était très vieux, âgé de quatre-vingts ans. Il avait entretenu le roi pendant son séjour à Mahanaïm, car c'était un homme fort riche.

33 Le roi dit à Barzillaï: Viens avec moi, je te nourrirai chez moi à Jérusalem.

34 Mais Barzillaï répondit au roi: Combien d'années vivrai-je encore, pour que je monte avec le roi à Jérusalem?

35 Je suis aujourd'hui âgé de quatre-vingts ans. Puis-je connaître ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais? Ton serviteur peut-il savourer ce qu'il mange et ce qu'il boit? Puis-je encore entendre la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses? Et pourquoi ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur le roi?

36 Ton serviteur ira un peu au delà du Jourdain avec le roi. Pourquoi, d'ailleurs, le roi m'accorderait-il ce bienfait?

37 Que ton serviteur s'en retourne, et que je meure dans ma ville, près du sépulcre de mon père et de ma mère! Mais voici ton serviteur Kimham, qui passera avec le roi mon seigneur; fais pour lui ce que tu trouveras bon.

38 Le roi dit: Que Kimham passe avec moi, et je ferai pour lui ce qui te plaira; tout ce que tu désireras de moi, je te l'accorderai.

39 Quand tout le peuple eut passé le Jourdain et que le roi l'eut aussi passé, le roi baisa Barzillaï et le bénit. Et Barzillaï retourna dans sa demeure.

40 Le roi se dirigea vers Guilgal, et Kimham l'accompagna. Tout le peuple de Juda et la moitié du peuple d'Israël avaient fait passer le Jourdain au roi.

41 Mais voici, tous les hommes d'Israël abordèrent le roi, et lui dirent: Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t'ont-ils enlevé, et ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain au roi, à sa maison, et à tous les gens de David?

42 Tous les hommes de Juda répondirent aux hommes d'Israël: C'est que le roi nous tient de plus près; et qu'y a-t-il là pour vous irriter? Avons-nous vécu aux dépens du roi? Nous a-t-il fait des présents?

43 Et les hommes d'Israël répondirent aux hommes de Juda: Le roi nous appartient dix fois autant, et David même plus qu'à vous. Pourquoi nous avez-vous méprisés? N'avons-nous pas été les premiers à proposer de faire revenir notre roi? Et les hommes de Juda parlèrent avec plus de violence que les hommes d'Israël.

2 E la vittoria in quel giorno si cangiò in lutto per tutto il popolo, perché il popolo sentì dire in quel giorno: "Il re è molto afflitto a cagione del suo figliuolo".

3 E il popolo in quel giorno rientrò furtivamente in città, com’avrebbe fatto gente coperta di vergogna per esser fuggita in battaglia.

4 E il re s’era coperto la faccia, e ad alta voce gridava: "Absalom figliuol mio! Absalom figliuol mio, figliuol mio!"

5 Allora Joab entrò in casa dal re, e disse: "Tu copri oggi di rossore il volto di tutta la tua gente, che in questo giorno ha salvato la vita a te, ai tuoi figliuoli, e alle tue figliuole alle tue mogli e alle tue concubine,

6 giacché ami quelli che t’odiano, e odi quelli che t’amano; infatti oggi tu fai vedere che capitani e soldati per te son nulla; e ora io vedo bene che se Absalom fosse vivo e noi fossimo quest’oggi tutti morti, allora saresti contento.

7 Or dunque lèvati, esci, e parla al cuore della tua gente; perché io giuro per l’Eterno che, se non esci, neppure un uomo resterà con te questa notte; e questa sarà per te sventura maggiore di tutte quelle che ti son cadute addosso dalla tua giovinezza fino a oggi".

8 Allora il re si levò e si pose a sedere alla porta; e ne fu dato l’annunzio a tutto il popolo, dicendo: "Ecco il re sta assiso alla porta". E tutto il popolo venne in presenza del re. Or quei d’Israele se n’eran fuggiti, ognuno nella sua tenda;

9 e in tutte le tribù d’Israele tutto il popolo stava discutendo, e dicevano: "Il re ci ha liberati dalle mani dei nostri nemici e ci ha salvati dalle mani de’ Filistei; e ora ha dovuto fuggire dal paese a cagione di Absalom;

10 e Absalom, che noi avevamo unto perché regnasse su noi, è morto in battaglia; perché dunque non parlate di far tornare il re?"

11 E il re Davide mandò a dire ai sacerdoti Tsadok ed Abiathar: "Parlate agli anziani di Giuda, e dite loro: Perché sareste voi ultimi a ricondurre il re a casa sua? I discorsi che si tengono in tutto Israele sono giunti fino alla casa del re.

12 Voi siete miei fratelli, siete mie ossa e mia carne; perché dunque sareste gli ultimi a far tornare il re?

13 E dite ad Amasa: Non sei tu mie ossa e mia carne? Iddio mi tratti con tutto il suo rigore, se tu non diventi per sempre capo dell’esercito, invece di Joab".

14 Così Davide piegò il cuore di tutti gli uomini di Giuda, come se fosse stato il cuore di un sol uomo; ed essi mandarono a dire al re: "Ritorna tu con tutta la tua gente".

15 Il re dunque tornò, e giunse al Giordano; e quei di Giuda vennero a Ghilgal per andare incontro al re, e per fargli passare il Giordano.

16 Shimei, figliuolo di Ghera, Beniaminita, ch’era di Bahurim, si affrettò a scendere con gli uomini di iuda incontro al re Davide.

17 Egli avea seco mille uomini di Beniamino, Tsiba, servo della casa di Saul, coi suoi quindici figliuoli e i suoi venti servi. Essi passarono il Giordano davanti al re.

18 La chiatta che dovea tragittare la famiglia del re e tenersi a sua disposizione, passò; e Shimei, figliuolo di Ghera, prostratosi dinanzi al re, nel momento in cui questi stava per passare il Giordano,

19 gli disse: "Non tenga conto, il mio signore, della mia iniquità, e dimentichi la perversa condotta tenuta dal suo servo il giorno in cui il re mio signore usciva da Gerusalemme, e non ne serbi il re risentimento!

20 Poiché il tuo servo riconosce che ha peccato; e per questo sono stato oggi il primo di tutta la casa di iuseppe a scendere incontro al re mio signore".

21 Ma Abishai, figliuolo di Tseruia, prese a dire: "Nonostante questo, Shimei non dev’egli morire per aver maledetto l’unto dell’Eterno?"

22 E Davide disse: "Che ho io da fare con voi, o figliuoli di Tseruia, che vi mostrate oggi miei avversari? Si farebb’egli morir oggi qualcuno in Israele? Non so io dunque che oggi divento re d’Israele?"

23 E il re disse a Shimei: "Tu non morrai!" E il re glielo giurò.

24 Mefibosheth, nipote di Saul, scese anch’egli incontro al re. Ei non s’era puliti i piedi, né spuntata la barba, né lavate le vesti dal giorno in cui il re era partito fino a quello in cui tornava in pace.

25 E quando fu giunto da Gerusalemme per incontrare il re, il re gli disse: "Perché non venisti meco, efibosheth?"

26 Quegli rispose: "O re, mio signore, il mio servo m’ingannò; perché il tuo servo, che è zoppo, avea detto: Io mi farò sellar l’asino, monterò, e andrò col re.

27 Ed egli ha calunniato il tuo servo presso il re mio signore; ma il re mio signore è come un angelo di io; fa’ dunque ciò che ti piacerà.

28 Poiché tutti quelli della casa di mio padre non avrebbero meritato dal re mio signore altro che la morte; e, nondimeno, tu avevi posto il tuo servo fra quelli che mangiano alla tua mensa. E qual altro diritto poss’io avere? E perché continuerei io a supplicare il re?"

29 E il re gli disse: "Non occorre che tu aggiunga altre parole. L’ho detto; tu e Tsiba dividetevi le terre".

30 E Mefibosheth rispose al re: "Si prenda pur egli ogni cosa, giacché il re mio signore è tornato in pace a casa sua".

31 Or Barzillai, il Galaadita, scese da Roghelim, e passò il Giordano col re per accompagnarlo di là dal iordano.

32 Barzillai era molto vecchio; aveva ottant’anni, ed avea fornito i viveri al re mentre questi si trovava a ahanaim; poiché era molto facoltoso.

33 Il re disse a Barzillai: "Vieni con me oltre il fiume; io provvederò al tuo sostentamento a casa mia a erusalemme".

34 Ma Barzillai rispose al re: "Troppo pochi son gli anni che mi resta da vivere perch’io salga col re a erusalemme.

35 Io ho adesso ottant’anni: posso io ancora discernere ciò ch’è buono da ciò che è cattivo? Può il tuo servo gustare ancora ciò che mangia o ciò che beve? Posso io udire ancora la voce dei cantori e delle cantatrici? E perché dunque il tuo servo sarebb’egli d’aggravio al re mio signore?

36 Solo per poco tempo andrebbe il tuo servo oltre il Giordano col re; e perché il re vorrebb’egli rimunerarmi con un cotal beneficio?

37 Deh, lascia che il tuo servo se ne ritorni indietro, e ch’io possa morire nella mia città presso la tomba di mio padre e di mia madre! Ma ecco il tuo servo Kimham; passi egli col re mio signore, e fa’ per lui quello che ti piacerà".

38 Il re rispose: "Venga meco Kimham, e io farò per lui quello che a te piacerà; e farò per te tutto quello che desidererai da me".

39 E quando tutto il popolo ebbe passato il Giordano e l’ebbe passato anche il re, il re baciò Barzillai e lo benedisse, ed egli se ne tornò a casa sua.

40 Così il re passò oltre, e andò a Ghilgal; e Kimham lo accompagnò. Tutto il popolo di Giuda e anche la metà del popolo d’Israele aveano fatto scorta al re.

41 Allora tutti gli altri Israeliti vennero dal re e gli dissero: "Perché i nostri fratelli, gli uomini di Giuda, ti hanno portato via di nascosto, e hanno fatto passare il Giordano al re, alla sua famiglia e a tutta la gente di Davide?"

42 E tutti gli uomini di Giuda risposero agli uomini d’Israele: "Perché il re appartiene a noi più dappresso; e perché vi adirate voi per questo? Abbiam noi mangiato a spese del re? O abbiam noi ricevuto qualche regalo?"

43 E gli uomini d’Israele risposero agli uomini di Giuda: "Il re appartiene a noi dieci volte più che a voi, e quindi Davide è più nostro che vostro; perché dunque ci avete disprezzati? Non siamo stati noi i primi a proporre di far tornare il nostro re?" Ma il parlare degli uomini di Giuda fu più violento di quello degli uomini d’Israele.
