1 And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. 2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite. 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. 6 And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. 7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8 But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; 9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. 17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am. 21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him. 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still. 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 27 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother. 28 So Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim. 30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

1 Après cela, David consulta l'Eternel, en disant: Monterai-je dans une des villes de Juda? L'Eternel lui répondit: Monte. David dit: Où monterai-je? Et l'Eternel répondit: A Hébron.

2 David y monta, avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jizreel, et Abigaïl de Carmel, femme de Nabal.

3 David fit aussi monter les gens qui étaient auprès de lui, chacun avec sa maison; et ils habitèrent dans les villes d'Hébron.

4 Les hommes de Juda vinrent, et là ils oignirent David pour roi sur la maison de Juda. On informa David que c'étaient les gens de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.

5 David envoya des messagers aux gens de Jabès en Galaad, pour leur dire: Soyez bénis de l'Eternel, puisque vous avez ainsi montré de la bienveillance envers Saül, votre maître, et que vous l'avez enterré.

6 Et maintenant, que l'Eternel use envers vous de bonté et de fidélité. Moi aussi je vous ferai du bien, parce que vous avez agi de la sorte.

7 Que vos mains se fortifient, et soyez de vaillants hommes; car votre maître Saül est mort, et c'est moi que la maison de Juda a oint pour roi sur elle.

8 Cependant Abner, fils de Ner, chef de l'armée de Saül, prit Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, et le fit passer à Mahanaïm.

9 Il l'établit roi sur Galaad, sur les Gueschuriens, sur Jizreel, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin, sur tout Israël.

10 Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, était âgé de quarante ans, lorsqu'il devint roi d'Israël, et il régna deux ans. Il n'y eut que la maison de Juda qui resta attachée à David.

11 Le temps pendant lequel David régna à Hébron sur la maison de Juda fut de sept ans et six mois.

12 Abner, fils de Ner, et les gens d'Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm pour marcher sur Gabaon.

13 Joab, fils de Tseruja, et les gens de David, se mirent aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l'étang de Gabaon, et ils s'arrêtèrent les uns en deçà de l'étang, et les autres au delà.

14 Abner dit à Joab: Que ces jeunes gens se lèvent, et qu'ils se battent devant nous! Joab répondit: Qu'ils se lèvent!

15 Ils se levèrent et s'avancèrent en nombre égal, douze pour Benjamin et pour Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, et douze des gens de David.

16 Chacun saisissant son adversaire par la tête lui enfonça son épée dans le flanc, et ils tombèrent tous ensemble. Et l'on donna à ce lieu, qui est près de Gabaon, le nom de Helkath-Hatsurim.

17 Il y eut en ce jour un combat très rude, dans lequel Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent battus par les gens de David.

18 Là se trouvaient les trois fils de Tseruja: Joab, Abischaï et Asaël. Asaël avait les pieds légers comme une gazelle des champs:

19 il poursuivit Abner, sans se détourner de lui pour aller à droite ou à gauche.

20 Abner regarda derrière lui, et dit: Est-ce toi, Asaël? Et il répondit: C'est moi.

21 Abner lui dit: Tire à droite ou à gauche; saisis-toi de l'un de ces jeunes gens, et prends sa dépouille. Mais Asaël ne voulut point se détourner de lui.

22 Abner dit encore à Asaël: Détourne-toi de moi; pourquoi te frapperais-je et t'abattrais-je en terre? comment ensuite lèverais-je le visage devant ton frère Joab?

23 Et Asaël refusa de se détourner. Sur quoi Abner le frappa au ventre avec l'extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par derrière. Il tomba et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient au lieu où Asaël était tombé mort, s'y arrêtaient.

24 Joab et Abischaï poursuivirent Abner, et le soleil se couchait quand ils arrivèrent au coteau d'Amma, qui est en face de Guiach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.

25 Les fils de Benjamin se rallièrent à la suite d'Abner et formèrent un corps, et ils s'arrêtèrent au sommet d'une colline.

26 Abner appela Joab, et dit: L'épée dévorera-t-elle toujours? Ne sais-tu pas qu'il y aura de l'amertume à la fin? Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à dire au peuple de ne plus poursuivre ses frères?

27 Joab répondit: Dieu est vivant! si tu n'eusses parlé, le peuple n'aurait pas cessé avant le matin de poursuivre ses frères.

28 Et Joab sonna de la trompette, et tout le peuple s'arrêta; ils ne poursuivirent plus Israël, et ils ne continuèrent pas à se battre.

29 Abner et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit dans la plaine; ils passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent en entier le Bithron, et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.

30 Joab revint de la poursuite d'Abner, et rassembla tout le peuple; il manquait dix-neuf hommes des gens de David, et Asaël.

31 Mais les gens de David avaient frappé à mort trois cent soixante hommes parmi ceux de Benjamin et d'Abner.

32 Ils emportèrent Asaël, et l'enterrèrent dans le sépulcre de son père à Bethléhem. Joab et ses gens marchèrent toute la nuit, et le jour paraissait quand ils furent à Hébron.

1 Dopo questo, Davide consultò l’Eterno, dicendo: "Debbo io salire in qualcuna delle città di Giuda?" L’Eterno gli rispose: "Sali". Davide chiese: "Dove salirò io?" L’Eterno rispose:

2 "A Hebron". Davide dunque vi salì con le sue due mogli, Abinoam la Izreelita, ed Abigail la Carmelita ch’era stata moglie di Nabal.

3 Davide vi menò pure la gente ch’era con lui, ciascuno con la sua famiglia, e si stabilirono nelle città di ebron.

4 E gli uomini di Giuda vennero e unsero quivi Davide come re della casa di Giuda. Ora fu riferito a avide ch’erano stati gli uomini di Jabes di Galaad a seppellire Saul.

5 Allora Davide inviò de’ messi agli uomini di Jabes di Galaad, e fece dir loro: "Siate benedetti dall’Eterno, voi che avete mostrato questa benignità verso Saul, vostro signore, dandogli sepoltura!

6 Ed ora l’Eterno mostri a voi la sua benignità e la sua fedeltà! E anch’io vi farò del bene, giacché avete agito così.

7 Or dunque si rafforzino le vostre mani, e siate valenti; giacché Saul è morto, ma la casa di Giuda mi ha unto come re su di essa".

8 Or Abner, figliuolo di Ner, capo dell’esercito di Saul, prese Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, e lo fece passare a Mahanaim,

9 e lo costituì re di Galaad, degli Ashuriti, di Izreel, d’Efraim, di Beniamino e di tutto Israele.

10 Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, avea quarant’anni quando cominciò a regnare sopra Israele, e regnò due anni. Ma la casa di Giuda seguitò Davide.

11 Il tempo che Davide regnò a Hebron sulla casa di Giuda fu di sette anni e sei mesi.

12 Or Abner, figliuolo di Ner, e la gente di Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, uscirono da Mahanaim per marciare verso Gabaon.

13 Joab, figliuolo di Tseruia e la gente di Davide si misero anch’essi in marcia. S’incontrarono presso lo stagno di Gabaon, e si fermarono gli uni da un lato dello stagno, gli altri dall’altro lato.

14 Allora Abner disse a Joab: "Si levino dei giovani, e giochin di spada in nostra presenza!" E Joab rispose: "Si levino pure!"

15 Quelli dunque si levarono, e si fecero avanti in numero uguale: dodici per Beniamino e per sh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, e dodici della gente di Davide.

16 E ciascun d’essi, preso l’avversario per la testa, gli piantò la spada nel fianco; cosicché caddero tutt’insieme. Perciò quel luogo, ch’è presso a Gabaon, fu chiamato Helkath-Hatsurim.

17 In quel giorno vi fu una battaglia aspra assai, nella quale Abner con la gente d’Israele fu sconfitto dalla gente di Davide.

18 V’erano quivi i tre figliuoli di Tseruia, Joab, Abishai ed Asael; e Asael era di piè veloce come una gazzella della campagna.

19 Asael si mise ad inseguire Abner; e, dandogli dietro, non si voltava né a destra né a sinistra.

20 Abner, guardandosi alle spalle, disse: "Sei tu, Asael?" Quegli rispose: "Son io".

21 E Abner gli disse: "Volgiti a destra o a sinistra, afferra uno di que’ giovani, e prenditi le sue spoglie!" Ma Asael non volle cessare dall’inseguirlo.

22 E Abner di bel nuovo gli disse: "Cessa dal darmi dietro! Perché obbligarmi a inchiodarti al suolo? Come potrei io poi alzar la fronte dinanzi al tuo fratello Joab?"

23 Ma quegli si rifiutò di cambiare strada; allora Abner con la estremità inferiore della lancia lo colpì nell’inguine, sì che la lancia lo passò da parte a parte. Asael cadde e morì in quello stesso luogo; e quanti passavano dal punto dov’egli era caduto morto, si fermavano.

24 Ma Joab e Abishai inseguirono Abner; e il sole tramontava quando giunsero al colle di Amma, ch’è dirimpetto a Ghiah, sulla via del deserto di Gabaon.

25 E i figliuoli di Beniamino si radunarono dietro ad Abner, formarono un corpo, e si collocarono in vetta a una collina.

26 Allora Abner chiamò Joab e disse: "La spada divorerà ella in perpetuo? Non sai tu che alla fine ci sarà dell’amaro? Quando verrà dunque il momento che ordinerai al popolo di non dar più la caccia ai suoi fratelli?"

27 Joab rispose: "Com’è vero che Dio vive, se tu non avessi parlato, il popolo non avrebbe cessato d’inseguire i suoi fratelli prima di domani mattina".

28 Allora Joab suonò la tromba, e tutto il popolo si fermò, senza più inseguire Israele, e cessò di combattere.

29 Abner e la sua gente camminarono tutta quella notte per la campagna, passarono il Giordano, attraversarono tutto il Bithron e giunsero a Mahanaim.

30 Joab tornò anch’egli dall’inseguire Abner; e, radunato tutto il popolo, risultò che della gente di Davide mancavano diciannove uomini ed Asael.

31 Ma la gente di Davide aveva ucciso trecento sessanta uomini de’ Beniaminiti e della gente di Abner.

32 Poi portaron via Asael e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro di suo padre, a Bethlehem. Poi Joab e la sua gente camminaron tutta la notte; e il giorno spuntava, quando giunsero a Hebron.
