1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites. 2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.) 3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD? 4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you. 5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel, 6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them. 7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite: 9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.

10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.

12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, which had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa: 13 And he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. 14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.

15 Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed faint. 16 And Ishbi-benob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. 17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel. 18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. 19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Beth-lehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant. 21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea the brother of David slew him. 22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

1 Du temps de David, il y eut une famine qui dura trois ans. David chercha la face de l'Eternel, et l'Eternel dit: C'est à cause de Saül et de sa maison sanguinaire, c'est parce qu'il a fait périr les Gabaonites.

2 Le roi appela les Gabaonites pour leur parler. -Les Gabaonites n'étaient point d'entre les enfants d'Israël, mais c'était un reste des Amoréens; les enfants d'Israël s'étaient liés envers eux par un serment, et néanmoins Saül avait voulu les frapper, dans son zèle pour les enfants d'Israël et de Juda. -

3 David dit aux Gabaonites: Que puis-je faire pour vous, et avec quoi ferai-je expiation, afin que vous bénissiez l'héritage de l'Eternel?

4 Les Gabaonites lui répondirent: Ce n'est pas pour nous une question d'argent et d'or avec Saül et avec sa maison, et ce n'est pas à nous qu'il appartient de faire mourir personne en Israël. Et le roi dit: Que voulez-vous donc que je fasse pour vous?

5 Ils répondirent au roi: Puisque cet homme nous a consumés, et qu'il avait le projet de nous détruire pour nous faire disparaître de tout le territoire d'Israël,

6 qu'on nous livre sept hommes d'entre ses fils, et nous les pendrons devant l'Eternel à Guibea de Saül, l'élu de l'Eternel. Et le roi dit: Je les livrerai.

7 Le roi épargna Mephiboscheth, fils de Jonathan, fils de Saül, à cause du serment qu'avaient fait entre eux, devant l'Eternel, David et Jonathan, fils de Saül.

8 Mais le roi prit les deux fils que Ritspa, fille d'Ajja, avait enfantés à Saül, Armoni et Mephiboscheth, et les cinq fils que Mérab, fille de Saül, avait enfantés à Adriel de Mehola, fils de Barzillaï;

9 et il les livra entre les mains des Gabaonites, qui les pendirent sur la montagne, devant l'Eternel. Tous les sept périrent ensemble; ils furent mis à mort dans les premiers jours de la moisson, au commencement de la moisson des orges.

10 Ritspa, fille d'Ajja, prit un sac et l'étendit sous elle contre le rocher, depuis le commencement de la moisson jusqu'à ce que la pluie du ciel tombât sur eux; et elle empêcha les oiseaux du ciel de s'approcher d'eux pendant le jour, et les bêtes des champs pendant la nuit.

11 On informa David de ce qu'avait fait Ritspa, fille d'Ajja, concubine de Saül.

12 Et David alla prendre les os de Saül et les os de Jonathan, son fils, chez les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, qui les avaient enlevés de la place de Beth-Schan, où les Philistins les avaient suspendus lorsqu'ils battirent Saül à Guilboa.

13 Il emporta de là les os de Saül et de Jonathan, son fils; et l'on recueillit aussi les os de ceux qui avaient été pendus.

14 On enterra les os de Saül et de Jonathan, son fils, au pays de Benjamin, à Tséla, dans le sépulcre de Kis, père de Saül. Et l'on fit tout ce que le roi avait ordonné. Après cela, Dieu fut apaisé envers le pays.

15 Les Philistins firent encore la guerre à Israël. David descendit avec ses serviteurs, et ils combattirent les Philistins. David était fatigué.

16 Et Jischbi-Benob, l'un des enfants de Rapha, eut la pensée de tuer David; il avait une lance du poids de trois cents sicles d'airain, et il était ceint d'une épée neuve.

17 Abischaï, fils de Tseruja, vint au secours de David, frappa le Philistin et le tua. Alors les gens de David jurèrent, en lui disant: Tu ne sortiras plus avec nous pour combattre, et tu n'éteindras pas la lampe d'Israël.

18 Il y eut encore, après cela, une bataille à Gob avec les Philistins. Alors Sibbecaï, le Huschatite, tua Saph, qui était un des enfants de Rapha.

19 Il y eut encore une bataille à Gob avec les Philistins. Et Elchanan, fils de Jaaré-Oreguim, de Bethléhem, tua Goliath de Gath, qui avait une lance dont le bois était comme une ensouple de tisserand.

20 Il y eut encore une bataille à Gath. Il s'y trouva un homme de haute taille, qui avait six doigts à chaque main et à chaque pied, vingt-quatre en tout, et qui était aussi issu de Rapha.

21 Il jeta un défi à Israël; et Jonathan, fils de Schimea, frère de David, le tua.

22 Ces quatre hommes étaient des enfants de Rapha à Gath. Ils périrent par la main de David et par la main de ses serviteurs.

2 Allora il re chiamò i Gabaoniti, e parlò loro. I Gabaoniti non erano del numero de’ figliuoli d’Israele, ma avanzi degli Amorei; e i figliuoli d’Israele s’eran legati a loro per giuramento; nondimeno, Saul, nel suo zelo per i figliuoli d’Israele e di Giuda avea cercato di sterminarli.

3 Davide disse ai Gabaoniti: "Che debbo io fare per voi, e in che modo espierò il torto fattovi, perché voi benediciate l’eredità dell’Eterno?"

4 I Gabaoniti gli risposero: "Fra noi e Saul e la sua casa non è questione d’argento o d’oro; e non appartiene a noi il far morire alcuno in Israele". Il re disse: "Quel che voi direte io lo farò per voi".

5 E quelli risposero al re: "Poiché quell’uomo ci ha consunti e avea fatto il piano di sterminarci per farci sparire da tutto il territorio d’Israele,

6 ci siano consegnati sette uomini di tra i suoi figliuoli, e noi li appiccheremo dinanzi all’Eterno a Ghibea di Saul, l’Eletto dell’Eterno". Il re disse: "Ve li consegnerò".

7 Il re risparmiò Mefibosheth, figliuolo di Gionathan, figliuolo di Saul, per cagione del giuramento che avide e Gionathan, figliuolo di Saul, avean fatto tra loro davanti all’Eterno;

8 ma il re prese i due figliuoli che Ritspa figliuola d’Aiah avea partoriti a Saul, Armoni e Mefibosheth, e i cinque figliuoli che Merab, figliuola di Saul, avea partoriti ad Adriel di Mehola, figliuolo di Barzillai,

9 e li consegnò ai Gabaoniti, che li appiccarono sul monte, dinanzi all’Eterno. Tutti e sette perirono assieme; furon messi a morte nei primi giorni della mèsse, quando si principiava a mietere l’orzo.

10 Ritspa, figliuola di Aiah, prese un cilicio, se lo stese sulla roccia, e stette là dal principio della mèsse fino a che l’acqua non cadde dal cielo sui cadaveri; e impedì agli uccelli del cielo di posarsi su di essi di giorno, e alle fiere dei campi d’accostarsi di notte.

11 E fu riferito a Davide quello che Ritspa, figliuola di Aiah, concubina di Saul, avea fatto.

12 E Davide andò a prendere le ossa di Saul e quelle di Gionathan suo figliuolo presso gli abitanti di Jabes di Galaad, i quali le avean portate via dalla piazza di Beth-Shan, dove i Filistei aveano appesi i cadaveri quando aveano sconfitto Saul sul Ghilboa.

13 Egli riportò di là le ossa di Saul e quelle di Gionathan suo figliuolo; e anche le ossa di quelli ch’erano stati impiccati furono raccolte.

14 E le ossa di Saul e di Gionathan suo figliuolo furon sepolte nel paese di Beniamino, a Tsela, nel sepolcro di Kis, padre di Saul; e fu fatto tutto quello che il re avea ordinato. Dopo questo, Iddio fu placato verso il paese.

15 I Filistei mossero di nuovo guerra ad Israele; e Davide scese con la sua gente a combattere contro i ilistei. Davide era stanco;

16 e Ishbi-Benob, uno dei discendenti di Rafa, che aveva una lancia del peso di trecento sicli di rame e portava un’armatura nuova, manifestò il proposito di uccidere Davide;

17 ma Abishai, il figliuolo di Tseruia, venne in soccorso del re, colpì il Filisteo, e lo uccise. Allora la gente di Davide gli fece questo giuramento: "Tu non uscirai più con noi a combattere, e non spegnerai la lampada d’Israele".

18 Dopo questo, ci fu un’altra battaglia coi Filistei, a Gob; e allora Sibbecai di Huslah uccise Saf, uno dei discendenti di Rafa.

19 Ci fu un’altra battaglia coi Filistei a Gob; ed Elhanan, figliuolo di Jaare-Oreghim di Bethlehem uccise oliath di Gath, di cui l’asta della lancia era come un subbio da tessitore.

20 Ci fu un’altra battaglia a Gath, dove si trovò un uomo di grande statura, che avea sei dita a ciascuna mano e a ciascun piede, in tutto ventiquattro dita, e che era anch’esso dei discendenti di Rafa.

21 Egli ingiuriò Israele, e Gionathan, figliuolo di Scimea, fratello di Davide, l’uccise.

22 Questi quattro erano nati a Gath, della stirpe di Rafa. Essi perirono per mano di Davide e per mano della sua gente.
