1 And when Saul’s son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled. 2 And Saul’s son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin: 3 And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.) 4 And Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth. 5 And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. 6 And they came thither into the midst of the house, as though they would have fetched wheat; and they smote him under the fifth rib: and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. 7 For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him, and took his head, and gat them away through the plain all night. 8 And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.

9 And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, 10 When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his tidings: 11 How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? 12 And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up over the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the sepulchre of Abner in Hebron.

1 Lorsque le fils de Saül apprit qu'Abner était mort à Hébron, ses mains restèrent sans force, et tout Israël fut dans l'épouvante.

2 Le fils de Saül avait deux chefs de bandes, dont l'un s'appelait Baana et l'autre Récab; ils étaient fils de Rimmon de Beéroth, d'entre les fils de Benjamin. -Car Beéroth était regardée comme faisant partie de Benjamin,

3 et les Beérothiens s'étaient enfuis à Guitthaïm, où ils ont habité jusqu'à ce jour.

4 Jonathan, fils de Saül, avait un fils perclus des pieds; et âgé de cinq ans lorsqu'arriva de Jizreel la nouvelle de la mort de Saül et de Jonathan; sa nourrice le prit et s'enfuit, et, comme elle précipitait sa fuite, il tomba et resta boiteux; son nom était Mephiboscheth.

5 Or les fils de Rimmon de Beéroth, Récab et Baana, se rendirent pendant la chaleur du jour à la maison d'Isch-Boscheth, qui était couché pour son repos de midi.

6 Ils pénétrèrent jusqu'au milieu de la maison, comme pour prendre du froment, et ils le frappèrent au ventre; puis Récab et Baana, son frère, se sauvèrent.

7 Ils entrèrent donc dans la maison pendant qu'il reposait sur son lit dans sa chambre à coucher, ils le frappèrent et le firent mourir, et ils lui coupèrent la tête. Ils prirent sa tête, et ils marchèrent toute la nuit au travers de la plaine.

8 Ils apportèrent la tête d'Isch-Boscheth à David dans Hébron, et ils dirent au roi: Voici la tête d'Isch-Boscheth, fils de Saül, ton ennemi, qui en voulait à ta vie; l'Eternel venge aujourd'hui le roi mon seigneur de Saül et de sa race.

9 David répondit à Récab et à Baana, son frère, fils de Rimmon de Beéroth: L'Eternel qui m'a délivré de tout péril est vivant!

10 celui qui est venu me dire: Voici, Saül est mort, et qui croyait m'annoncer une bonne nouvelle, je l'ai fait saisir et tuer à Tsiklag, pour lui donner le salaire de son message;

11 et quand des méchants ont assassiné un homme juste dans sa maison et sur sa couche, combien plus ne redemanderai-je pas son sang de vos mains et ne vous exterminerai-je pas de la terre?

12 Et David ordonna à ses gens de les tuer; ils leur coupèrent les mains et les pieds, et les pendirent au bord de l'étang d'Hébron. Ils prirent ensuite la tête d'Isch-Boscheth, et l'enterrèrent dans le sépulcre d'Abner à Hébron.

1 Quando Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, ebbe udito che Abner era morto a Hebron, gli caddero le braccia, e tutto Israele fu nello sgomento.

2 Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, avea due uomini che erano capitani di schiere; il nome dell’uno era Baana, e il nome dell’altro Recab; erano figliuoli di Rimmon di Beeroth, della tribù di Beniamino, perché anche Beeroth è considerata come appartenente a Beniamino,

3 benché i Beerothiti si siano rifugiati a Ghitthaim, dove sono rimasti fino al dì d’oggi.

4 (Or Gionathan, figliuolo di Saul, aveva un figlio storpiato de’ piedi, il quale era in età di cinque anni quando arrivò da Izreel la nuova della morte di Saul e di Gionathan. La balia lo prese e fuggì; e in questa sua fuga precipitosa avvenne che il bimbo fece una caduta e rimase zoppo. Il suo nome era Mefibosheth).

5 I figliuoli di Rimmon Beerothita, Recab e Baana, andaron dunque e si recarono, sul più caldo del giorno, in casa di Jsh-Bosheth, il quale stava prendendo il suo riposo del meriggio.

6 Penetrarono fino in mezzo alla casa, come volendo prendere del grano; lo colpirono nell’inguine, e si dettero alla fuga.

7 Entrarono, dico, in casa, mentre Jsh-Bosheth giaceva sul letto nella sua camera, lo colpirono, l’uccisero, lo decapitarono; e, presane la testa, camminarono tutta la notte attraverso la pianura.

8 E portarono la testa di Jsh-Bosheth a Davide a Hebron, e dissero al re: "Ecco la testa di Jsh-Bosheth, figliuolo di Saul, tuo nemico, il quale cercava di toglierti la vita; l’Eterno ha oggi fatte le vendette dei re, mio signore, sopra Saul e sopra la sua progenie".

9 Ma Davide rispose a Recab ed a Baana suo fratello, figliuoli di Rimmon Beerothita, e disse loro: Com’è vero che vive l’Eterno il quale ha liberato l’anima mia da ogni distretta,

10 quando venne colui che mi portò la nuova della morte di Saul, pensandosi di portarmi una buona notizia, io lo feci prendere e uccidere a Tsiklag, per pagarlo della sua buona notizia;

11 quanto più adesso che uomini scellerati hanno ucciso un innocente in casa sua, sul suo letto, non dovrò io ridomandare a voi ragion del suo sangue sparso dalle vostre mani e sterminarvi di sulla terra?"

12 E Davide diede l’ordine ai suoi militi, i quali li uccisero; troncaron loro le mani ed i piedi, poi li appiccarono presso lo stagno di Hebron. Presero quindi la testa di Jsh-Bosheth e la seppellirono nel sepolcro di Abner a Hebron.
