1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. 2 (There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.) 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; 4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: 5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying, 6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: 7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.
9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone: 10 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. 11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!) 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? 13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. 14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do. 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it. 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.
19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us. 21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come. 23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe: 24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out. 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us. 26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God: 27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there. 29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them. 30 The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; 31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place. 32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God, 33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day. 34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, 36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD. 37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. 39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. 40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea. 41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill. 42 And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies. 43 So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill. 44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah. 45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you. 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
1 Voici les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël, de l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans la plaine, vis-à-vis de Suph, entre Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hatséroth et Di-Zahab.
2 Il y a onze journées depuis Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séir, jusqu'à Kadès-Barnéa.
3 Dans la quarantième année, au onzième mois, le premier du mois, Moïse parla aux enfants d'Israël selon tout ce que l'Eternel lui avait ordonné de leur dire.
4 C'était après qu'il eut battu Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Aschtaroth et à Edréi.
5 De l'autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à expliquer cette loi, et dit:
6 L'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous a parlé à Horeb, en disant: Vous avez assez demeuré dans cette montagne.
7 Tournez-vous, et partez; allez à la montagne des Amoréens et dans tout le voisinage, dans la plaine, sur la montagne, dans la vallée, dans le midi, sur la côte de la mer, au pays des Cananéens et au Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve, au fleuve d'Euphrate.
8 Voyez, j'ai mis le pays devant vous; allez, et prenez possession du pays que l'Eternel a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de donner à eux et à leur postérité après eux.
9 Dans ce temps-là, je vous dis: Je ne puis pas, à moi seul, vous porter.
10 L'Eternel, votre Dieu, vous a multipliés, et vous êtes aujourd'hui aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel.
11 Que l'Eternel, le Dieu de vos pères, vous augmente mille fois autant, et qu'il vous bénisse comme il vous l'a promis!
12 Comment porterais-je, à moi seul, votre charge, votre fardeau et vos contestations?
13 Prenez dans vos tribus des hommes sages, intelligents et connus, et je les mettrai à votre tête.
14 Vous me répondîtes, en disant: Ce que tu proposes de faire est une bonne chose.
15 Je pris alors les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les mis à votre tête comme chefs de mille, chefs de cent, chefs de cinquante, et chefs de dix, et comme ayant autorité dans vos tribus.
16 Je donnai, dans le même temps, cet ordre à vos juges: Ecoutez vos frères, et jugez selon la justice les différends de chacun avec son frère ou avec l'étranger.
17 Vous n'aurez point égard à l'apparence des personnes dans vos jugements; vous écouterez le petit comme le grand; vous ne craindrez aucun homme, car c'est Dieu qui rend la justice. Et lorsque vous trouverez une cause trop difficile, vous la porterez devant moi, pour que je l'entende.
18 C'est ainsi que je vous prescrivis, dans ce temps-là, tout ce que vous aviez à faire.
19 Nous partîmes d'Horeb, et nous parcourûmes en entier ce grand et affreux désert que vous avez vu; nous prîmes le chemin de la montagne des Amoréens, comme l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'avait ordonné, et nous arrivâmes à Kadès-Barnéa.
20 Je vous dis: Vous êtes arrivés à la montagne des Amoréens, que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
21 Vois, l'Eternel, ton Dieu, met le pays devant toi; monte, prends-en possession, comme te l'a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu de tes pères; ne crains point, et ne t'effraie point.
22 Vous vous approchâtes tous de moi, et vous dîtes: Envoyons des hommes devant nous, pour explorer le pays, et pour nous faire un rapport sur le chemin par lequel nous y monterons et sur les villes où nous arriverons.
23 Cet avis me parut bon; et je pris douze hommes parmi vous, un homme par tribu.
24 Ils partirent, traversèrent la montagne, et arrivèrent jusqu'à la vallée d'Eschcol, qu'ils explorèrent.
25 Ils prirent dans leurs mains des fruits du pays, et nous les présentèrent; ils nous firent un rapport, et dirent: C'est un bon pays, que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous donne.
26 Mais vous ne voulûtes point y monter, et vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Eternel, votre Dieu.
27 Vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes, et vous dîtes: C'est parce que l'Eternel nous hait, qu'il nous a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, afin de nous livrer entre les mains des Amoréens et de nous détruire.
28 Où monterions-nous? Nos frères nous ont fait perdre courage, en disant: C'est un peuple plus grand et de plus haute taille que nous; ce sont des villes grandes et fortifiées jusqu'au ciel; nous y avons même vu des enfants d'Anak.
29 Je vous dis: Ne vous épouvantez pas, et n'ayez pas peur d'eux.
30 L'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra lui-même pour vous, selon tout ce qu'il a fait pour vous sous vos yeux en Egypte,
31 puis au désert, où tu as vu que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, t'a porté comme un homme porte son fils, pendant toute la route que vous avez faite jusqu'à votre arrivée en ce lieu.
32 Malgré cela, vous n'eûtes point confiance en l'Eternel, votre Dieu,
33 qui allait devant vous sur la route pour vous chercher un lieu de campement, la nuit dans un feu afin de vous montrer le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et le jour dans une nuée.
34 L'Eternel entendit le bruit de vos paroles. Il s'irrita, et jura, en disant:
35 Aucun des hommes de cette génération méchante ne verra le bon pays que j'ai juré de donner à vos pères,
36 excepté Caleb, fils de Jephunné; il le verra, lui, et je donnerai à lui et à ses enfants le pays sur lequel il a marché, parce qu'il a pleinement suivi la voie de l'Eternel.
37 L'Eternel s'irrita aussi contre moi, à cause de vous, et il dit: Toi non plus, tu n'y entreras point.
38 Josué, fils de Nun, ton serviteur, y entrera; fortifie-le, car c'est lui qui mettra Israël en possession de ce pays.
39 Et vos petits enfants, dont vous avez dit: Ils deviendront une proie! et vos fils, qui ne connaissent aujourd'hui ni le bien ni le mal, ce sont eux qui y entreront, c'est à eux que je le donnerai, et ce sont eux qui le posséderont.
40 Mais vous, tournez-vous, et partez pour le désert, dans la direction de la mer Rouge.
41 Vous répondîtes, en me disant: Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel; nous monterons et nous combattrons, comme l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous l'a ordonné. Et vous ceignîtes chacun vos armes, et vous fîtes le projet téméraire de monter à la montagne.
42 L'Eternel me dit: Dis-leur: Ne montez pas et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous; ne vous faites pas battre par vos ennemis.
43 Je vous parlai, mais vous n'écoutâtes point; vous fûtes rebelles à l'ordre de l'Eternel, et vous montâtes audacieusement à la montagne.
44 Alors les Amoréens, qui habitent cette montagne, sortirent à votre rencontre, et vous poursuivirent comme font les abeilles; ils vous battirent en Séir, jusqu'à Horma.
45 A votre retour, vous pleurâtes devant l'Eternel; mais l'Eternel n'écouta point votre voix, et ne vous prêta point l'oreille.
46 Vous restâtes à Kadès, où le temps que vous y avez passé fut de longue durée.

3 Il quarantesimo anno, lundecimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè parlò ai figliuoli dIsraele, secondo tutto quello che lEterno gli aveva ordinato di dir loro.
4 Questo avvenne dopo chegli ebbe sconfitto Sihon, re degli Amorei che abitava in Heshbon, e Og, re di asan che abitava in Astaroth e in Edrei.
5 Di là dal Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge, dicendo:
6 LEterno, lIddio nostro, ci parlò in Horeb e ci disse: "Voi avete dimorato abbastanza in queste montagne;
7 voltatevi, partite e andate nella contrada montuosa degli Amorei e in tutte le vicinanze, nella pianura, sui monti, nella regione bassa, nel mezzogiorno, sulla costa del mare, nel paese dei Cananei ed al Libano, fino al gran fiume, il fiume Eufrate.
8 Ecco, io vho posto il paese dinanzi; entrate, prendete possesso del paese che lEterno giurò di dare ai vostri padri, Abrahamo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e alla loro progenie dopo di loro".
9 In quel tempo io vi parlai e vi dissi: "Io non posso da solo sostenere il carico del popolo.
10 LEterno, chè il vostro Dio, vi ha moltiplicati, ed ecco che oggi siete numerosi come le stelle del cielo.
11 LEterno, lIddio de vostri padri vi aumenti anche mille volte di più, e vi benedica come vi ha promesso di fare!
12 Ma come posso io, da solo, portare il vostro carico, il vostro peso e le vostre liti?
13 Prendete nelle vostre tribù degli uomini savi, intelligenti e conosciuti, e io ve li stabilirò come capi".
14 E voi mi rispondeste, dicendo: "E bene che facciamo quel che tu proponi".
15 Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini savi e conosciuti, e li stabilii sopra voi come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di diecine, e come ufficiali nelle vostre tribù.
16 E in quel tempo detti questordine ai vostri giudici: "Ascoltate le cause de vostri fratelli, e giudicate con giustizia le questioni che uno può avere col fratello o con lo straniero che sta da lui.
17 Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali; darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudicio appartiene a Dio; e le cause troppo difficili per voi le recherete a me, e io le udirò".
18 Così, in quel tempo, io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.
19 Poi partimmo dallo Horeb e attraversammo tutto quel grande e spaventevole deserto che avete veduto, dirigendoci verso la contrada montuosa degli Amorei, come lEterno, lIddio nostro, ci aveva ordinato di fare, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.
20 Allora vi dissi: Siete arrivati alla contrada montuosa degli Amorei, che lEterno, lIddio nostro, ci dà.
21 Ecco, lEterno, il tuo Dio, tha posto il paese dinanzi; sali, prendine possesso, come lEterno, lIddio de tuoi padri, tha detto; non temere, e non ti spaventare".
22 E voi vi accostaste a me tutti quanti, e diceste: "Mandiamo degli uomini davanti a noi, che ci esplorino il paese, e ci riferiscano qualcosa del cammino per il quale noi dovremo salire, e delle città alle quali dovremo arrivare".
23 La cosa mi piacque, e presi dodici uomini tra voi, uno per tribù.
24 Quelli sincamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle dEshcol, ed esplorarono il paese.
25 Presero con le loro mani de frutti del paese, ce li portarono, e ci fecero la loro relazione dicendo: Quello che lEterno, il nostro Dio, ci dà, è un buon paese".
26 Ma voi non voleste salirvi, e vi ribellaste allordine dellEterno, del vostro Dio;
27 mormoraste nelle vostre tende, e diceste: "LEterno ci odia, per questo ci ha fatti uscire dal paese dEgitto per darci in mano agli Amorei e per distruggerci.
28 Dove saliam noi? I nostri fratelli ci han fatto struggere il cuore, dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi; le città vi sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; e abbiam perfino visto colà de figliuoli degli Anakim".
29 E io vi dissi: "Non vi sgomentate, e non abbiate paura di loro.
30 LEterno, lIddio vostro che va davanti a voi, combatterà egli stesso per voi, come ha fatto tante volte sotto gli occhi vostri, in Egitto,
31 e nel deserto, dove hai veduto come lEterno, il tuo Dio, ti ha portato come un uomo porta il suo figliuolo, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati a questo luogo".
32 Nonostante questo non aveste fiducia nellEterno, nellIddio vostro,
33 che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo da piantar le tende: di notte, nel fuoco per mostrarvi la via per la quale dovevate andare, e, di giorno, nella nuvola.
34 E lEterno udì le vostre parole, si adirò gravemente, e giurò dicendo:
35 "Certo, nessuno degli uomini di questa malvagia generazione vedrà il buon paese che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,
36 salvo Caleb, figliuolo di Gefunne. Egli lo vedrà; e a lui e ai suoi figliuoli darò la terra che egli ha calcato, perché ha pienamente seguito lEterno".
37 Anche contro a me lEterno si adirò per via di voi, e disse: "Neanche tu ventrerai;
38 Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, che ti serve, ventrerà; fortificalo, perchegli metterà Israele in possesso di questo paese.
39 E i vostri fanciulli, de quali avete detto: Diventeranno tanta preda! E i vostri figliuoli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, sono quelli che ventreranno; a loro lo darò, e saranno essi che lo possederanno.
40 Ma voi, tornate indietro e avviatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del mar Rosso".
41 Allora voi rispondeste, dicendomi: "Abbiam peccato contro lEterno; noi saliremo e combatteremo, interamente come lEterno, lIddio nostro, ci ha ordinato". E ognun di voi cinse le armi, e vi metteste temerariamente a salire verso i monti.
42 E lEterno mi disse: "Di loro: Non salite, e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sareste sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici".
43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi deste ascolto; anzi foste ribelli allordine dellEterno, foste presuntuosi, e vi metteste a salire verso i monti.
44 Allora gli Amorei, che abitano quella contrada montuosa, uscirono contro a voi, vinseguirono come fanno le api, e vi batterono in Seir fino a Horma.
45 E voi tornaste e piangeste davanti allEterno; ma lEterno non dette ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse orecchio.
46 Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni; e ben sapete quanti giorni vi siete rimasti.
