1 And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

3 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying, 4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. 5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him, 6 Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. 7 And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. 8 And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, 9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you. 10 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, 11 Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead. 12 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. 13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. 14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, 15 My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.

16 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.

17 And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure 18 Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. 19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.

2 Sara mourut à Kirjath-Arba, qui est Hébron, dans le pays de Canaan; et Abraham vint pour mener deuil sur Sara et pour la pleurer.

3 Abraham se leva de devant son mort, et parla ainsi aux fils de Heth:

4 Je suis étranger et habitant parmi vous; donnez-moi la possession d'un sépulcre chez vous, pour enterrer mon mort et l'ôter de devant moi.

5 Les fils de Heth répondirent à Abraham, en lui disant:

6 Ecoute-nous, mon seigneur! Tu es un prince de Dieu au milieu de nous; enterre ton mort dans celui de nos sépulcres que tu choisiras; aucun de nous ne te refusera son sépulcre pour enterrer ton mort.

7 Abraham se leva, et se prosterna devant le peuple du pays, devant les fils de Heth.

8 Et il leur parla ainsi: Si vous permettez que j'enterre mon mort et que je l'ôte de devant mes yeux, écoutez-moi, et priez pour moi Ephron, fils de Tsochar,

9 de me céder la caverne de Macpéla, qui lui appartient, à l'extrémité de son champ, de me la céder contre sa valeur en argent, afin qu'elle me serve de possession sépulcrale au milieu de vous.

10 Ephron était assis parmi les fils de Heth. Et Ephron, le Héthien, répondit à Abraham, en présence des fils de Heth et de tous ceux qui entraient par la porte de sa ville:

11 Non, mon seigneur, écoute-moi! Je te donne le champ, et je te donne la caverne qui y est. Je te les donne, aux yeux des fils de mon peuple: enterre ton mort.

12 Abraham se prosterna devant le peuple du pays.

13 Et il parla ainsi à Ephron, en présence du peuple du pays: Ecoute-moi, je te prie! Je donne le prix du champ: accepte-le de moi; et j'y enterrerai mon mort.

14 Et Ephron répondit à Abraham, en lui disant:

15 Mon seigneur, écoute-moi! Une terre de quatre cents sicles d'argent, qu'est-ce que cela entre moi et toi? Enterre ton mort.

16 Abraham comprit Ephron; et Abraham pesa à Ephron l'argent qu'il avait dit, en présence des fils de Heth, quatre cents sicles d'argent ayant cours chez le marchand.

17 Le champ d'Ephron à Macpéla, vis-à-vis de Mamré, le champ et la caverne qui y est, et tous les arbres qui sont dans le champ et dans toutes ses limites alentour,

18 devinrent ainsi la propriété d'Abraham, aux yeux des fils de Heth et de tous ceux qui entraient par la porte de sa ville.

19 Après cela, Abraham enterra Sara, sa femme, dans la caverne du champ de Macpéla, vis-à-vis de Mamré, qui est Hébron, dans le pays de Canaan.

20 Le champ et la caverne qui y est demeurèrent à Abraham comme possession sépulcrale, acquise des fils de Heth.

2 E Sara morì a Kiriat-Arba, che è Hebron, nel paese di Canaan; e Abrahamo venne a far duolo di Sara e a piangerla.

3 Poi Abrahamo si levò di presso al suo morto, e parlò ai figliuoli di Heth, dicendo:

4 "Io sono straniero e avventizio fra voi; datemi la proprietà di un sepolcro fra voi, affinché io seppellisca il mio morto e me lo tolga d’innanzi".

5 E i figliuoli di Heth risposero ad Abrahamo dicendogli:

6 "Ascoltaci, signore; tu sei fra noi un principe di Dio; seppellisci il tuo morto nel migliore dei nostri sepolcri; nessun di noi ti rifiuterà il suo sepolcro perché tu vi seppellisca il tuo morto".

7 E Abrahamo si levò, s’inchinò dinanzi al popolo del paese, dinanzi ai figliuoli di Heth, e parlò loro dicendo:

8 "Se piace a voi ch’io tolga il mio morto d’innanzi a me e lo seppellisca, ascoltatemi, e intercedete per me presso Efron figliuolo di Zohar

9 perché mi ceda la sua spelonca di Macpela che è all’estremità del suo campo, e me la dia per l’intero suo prezzo, come sepolcro che m’appartenga fra voi".

10 Or Efron sedeva in mezzo ai figliuoli di Heth; ed Efron, lo Hitteo, rispose ad Abrahamo in presenza dei figliuoli di Heth, di tutti quelli che entravano per la porta della sua città, dicendo:

11 "No, mio signore, ascoltami! Io ti dono il campo, e ti dono la spelonca che v’è; te ne fo dono, in presenza de’ figliuoli del mio popolo; seppellisci il tuo morto".

12 E Abrahamo s’inchinò dinanzi al popolo del paese,

13 e parlò ad Efron in presenza del popolo del paese, dicendo: "Deh, ascoltami! Io ti darò il prezzo del campo; accettalo da me, e io seppellirò quivi il mio morto".

14 Ed Efron rispose ad Abrahamo, dicendogli:

15 "Signor mio, ascoltami! Un pezzo di terreno di quattrocento sicli d’argento, che cos’è fra me e te? Seppellisci dunque il tuo morto".

16 E Abrahamo fece a modo di Efron; e Abrahamo pesò a Efron il prezzo ch’egli avea detto in presenza de’ figliuoli di Heth, quattrocento sicli d’argento, di buona moneta mercantile.

17 Così il campo di Efron ch’era a Macpela dirimpetto a Mamre, il campo con la caverna che v’era, e tutti gli alberi ch’erano nel campo e in tutti i confini all’intorno,

18 furono assicurati come proprietà d’Abrahamo, in presenza de’ figliuoli di Heth e di tutti quelli ch’entravano per la porta della città di Efron.

19 Dopo questo, Abrahamo seppellì Sara sua moglie nella spelonca del campo di Macpela dirimpetto a amre, che è Hebron, nel paese di Canaan.

20 E il campo e la spelonca che v’è, furono assicurati ad Abrahamo, dai figliuoli di Heth, come sepolcro di sua proprietà.
