1 Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. 3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD. 4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? 6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt? 7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination. 8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the LORD, and with your children’s children will I plead. 10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing. 11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the LORD. 13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled? 15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant. 16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head. 17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way? 18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river? 19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot. 21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? 22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD. 23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways; 24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her. 25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go. 26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets, 27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. 28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the LORD. 30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee? 32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways. 34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these. 35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. 36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. 37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

1 La parole de l'Eternel me fut adressée, en ces mots:

2 Va, et crie aux oreilles de Jérusalem: Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Je me souviens de ton amour lorsque tu étais jeune, De ton affection lorsque tu étais fiancée, Quand tu me suivais au désert, Dans une terre inculte.

3 Israël était consacré à l'Eternel, Il était les prémices de son revenu; Tous ceux qui en mangeaient se rendaient coupables, Et le malheur fondait sur eux, dit l'Eternel.

4 Ecoutez la parole de l'Eternel, maison de Jacob, Et vous toutes, familles de la maison d'Israël!

5 Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Quelle iniquité vos pères ont-ils trouvée en moi, Pour s'éloigner de moi, Et pour aller après des choses de néant et n'être eux-mêmes que néant?

6 Ils n'ont pas dit: Où est l'Eternel, Qui nous a fait monter du pays d'Egypte, Qui nous a conduits dans le désert, Dans une terre aride et pleine de fosses, Dans une terre où règnent la sécheresse et l'ombre de la mort, Dans une terre par où personne ne passe, Et où n'habite aucun homme?

7 Je vous ai fait venir dans un pays semblable à un verger, Pour que vous en mangiez les fruits et les meilleures productions; Mais vous êtes venus, et vous avez souillé mon pays, Et vous avez fait de mon héritage une abomination.

8 Les sacrificateurs n'ont pas dit: Où est l'Eternel? Les dépositaires de la loi ne m'ont pas connu, Les pasteurs m'ont été infidèles, Les prophètes ont prophétisé par Baal, Et sont allés après ceux qui ne sont d'aucun secours.

9 C'est pourquoi je veux encore contester avec vous, dit l'Eternel, Je veux contester avec les enfants de vos enfants.

10 Passez aux îles de Kittim, et regardez! Envoyez quelqu'un à Kédar, observez bien, Et regardez s'il y a rien de semblable!

11 Y a-t-il une nation qui change ses dieux, Quoiqu'ils ne soient pas des Dieux? Et mon peuple a changé sa gloire contre ce qui n'est d'aucun secours!

12 Cieux, soyez étonnés de cela; Frémissez d'épouvante et d'horreur! dit l'Eternel.

13 Car mon peuple a commis un double péché: Ils m'ont abandonné, moi qui suis une source d'eau vive, Pour se creuser des citernes, des citernes crevassées, Qui ne retiennent pas l'eau.

14 Israël est-il un esclave acheté, ou né dans la maison? Pourquoi donc devient-il une proie?

15 Contre lui les lionceaux rugissent, poussent leurs cris, Et ils ravagent son pays; Ses villes sont brûlées, il n'y a plus d'habitants.

16 Même les enfants de Noph et de Tachpanès Te briseront le sommet de la tête.

17 Cela ne t'arrive-t-il pas Parce que tu as abandonné l'Eternel, ton Dieu, Lorsqu'il te dirigeait dans la bonne voie?

18 Et maintenant, qu'as-tu à faire d'aller en Egypte, Pour boire l'eau du Nil? Qu'as-tu à faire d'aller en Assyrie, Pour boire l'eau du fleuve?

19 Ta méchanceté te châtiera, et ton infidélité te punira, Tu sauras et tu verras que c'est une chose mauvaise et amère D'abandonner l'Eternel, ton Dieu, Et de n'avoir de moi aucune crainte, Dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel des armées.

20 Tu as dès longtemps brisé ton joug, Rompu tes liens, Et tu as dit: Je ne veux plus être dans la servitude! Mais sur toute colline élevée Et sous tout arbre vert Tu t'es courbée comme une prostituée.

21 Je t'avais plantée comme une vigne excellente Et du meilleur plant; Comment as-tu changé, Dégénéré en une vigne étrangère?

22 Quand tu te laverais avec du nitre, Quand tu emploierais beaucoup de potasse, Ton iniquité resterait marquée devant moi, Dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel.

23 Comment dirais-tu: Je ne me suis point souillée, Je ne suis point allée après les Baals? Regarde tes pas dans la vallée, Reconnais ce que tu as fait, Dromadaire à la course légère et vagabonde!

24 Anesse sauvage, habituée au désert, Haletante dans l'ardeur de sa passion, Qui l'empêchera de satisfaire son désir? Tous ceux qui la cherchent n'ont pas à se fatiguer; Ils la trouvent pendant son mois.

25 Ne t'expose pas à avoir les pieds nus, Ne dessèche pas ton gosier! Mais tu dis: C'est en vain, non! Car j'aime les dieux étrangers, je veux aller après eux.

26 Comme un voleur est confus lorsqu'il est surpris, Ainsi seront confus ceux de la maison d'Israël, Eux, leurs rois, leurs chefs, Leurs sacrificateurs et leurs prophètes.

27 Ils disent au bois: Tu es mon père! Et à la pierre: Tu m'as donné la vie! Car ils me tournent le dos, ils ne me regardent pas. Et quand ils sont dans le malheur, ils disent: Lève-toi, sauve-nous!

28 Où donc sont tes dieux que tu t'es faits? Qu'ils se lèvent, s'ils peuvent te sauver au temps du malheur! Car tu as autant de dieux que de villes, ô Juda!

29 Pourquoi contesteriez-vous avec moi? Vous m'avez tous été infidèles, dit l'Eternel.

30 En vain ai-je frappé vos enfants; Ils n'ont point eu égard à la correction; Votre glaive a dévoré vos prophètes, Comme un lion destructeur.

31 Hommes de cette génération, considérez la parole de l'Eternel! Ai-je été pour Israël un désert, Ou un pays d'épaisses ténèbres? Pourquoi mon peuple dit-il: Nous sommes libres, Nous ne voulons pas retourner à toi?

32 La jeune fille oublie-t-elle ses ornements, La fiancée sa ceinture? Et mon peuple m'a oublié Depuis des jours sans nombre.

33 Comme tu es habile dans tes voies pour chercher ce que tu aimes! C'est même au crime que tu les exerces.

34 Jusque sur les pans de ton habit se trouve Le sang de pauvres innocents, Que tu n'as pas surpris faisant effraction.

35 Malgré cela, tu dis: Oui, je suis innocente! Certainement sa colère s'est détournée de moi! Voici, je vais contester avec toi, Parce que tu dis: Je n'ai point péché.

36 Pourquoi tant d'empressement à changer ton chemin? C'est de l'Egypte que viendra ta honte, Comme elle est venue de l'Assyrie.

37 De là aussi tu sortiras, les mains sur la tête; Car l'Eternel rejette ceux en qui tu te confies, Et tu ne réussiras pas auprès d'eux.

1 La parola dell’Eterno mi fu ancora rivolta, dicendo: Va’, e grida agli orecchi di Gerusalemme:

2 Così dice l’Eterno: Io mi ricordo dell’affezione che avevi per me quand’eri giovane, del tuo amore quand’eri fidanzata, allorché tu mi seguivi nel deserto, in una terra non seminata.

3 Israele era consacrato all’Eterno, le primizie della sua rendita; tutti quelli che lo divoravano si rendevan colpevoli, e la calamità piombava su loro, dice l’Eterno.

4 Ascoltate la parola dell’Eterno, o casa di Giacobbe, e voi tutte le famiglie della casa d’Israele!

5 Così parla l’Eterno: Quale iniquità hanno trovata i vostri padri in me, che si sono allontanati da me, e sono andati dietro alla vanità, e son diventati essi stessi vanità?

6 Essi non hanno detto: "Dov’è l’Eterno che ci ha tratti fuori dal paese d’Egitto, che ci ha menati per il deserto, per un paese di solitudine e di crepacci, per un paese d’aridità e d’ombra di morte, per un paese per il quale nessuno passò mai e dove non abitò mai nessuno?"

7 E io v’ho condotti in un paese ch’è un frutteto, perché ne mangiaste i frutti ed i buoni prodotti; ma voi, quando vi siete entrati, avete contaminato il mio paese e avete fatto della mia eredità un’abominazione.

8 I sacerdoti non hanno detto: "Dov’è l’Eterno?" i depositari della legge non m’hanno conosciuto, i pastori mi sono stati infedeli, i profeti hanno profetato nel nome di Baal, e sono andati dietro a cose che non giovano a nulla.

9 Perciò io contenderò ancora in giudizio con voi, dice l’Eterno, e contenderò coi figliuoli de’ vostri figliuoli.

10 Passate dunque nelle isole di Kittim, e guardate! Mandate a Kedar e osservate bene, e guardate se avvenne mai qualcosa di simile!

11 V’ha egli una nazione che abbia cambiato i suoi dèi, quantunque non siano dèi? Ma il mio popolo ha cambiato la sua gloria per ciò che non giova a nulla.

12 O cieli, stupite di questo; inorridite e restate attoniti, dice l’Eterno.

13 Poiché il mio popolo ha commesso due mali: ha abbandonato me, la sorgente d’acqua viva, e s’è scavato delle cisterne, delle cisterne screpolate, che non tengono l’acqua.

14 Israele è egli uno schiavo? è egli uno schiavo nato in casa? Perché dunque è egli diventato una preda?

15 I leoncelli ruggono contro di lui, e fanno udire la loro voce, e riducono il suo paese in una desolazione; e sue città sono arse, e non vi son più abitanti.

16 Perfino gli abitanti di Nof e di Tahpanes ti divorano il cranio.

17 Tutto questo non ti succede egli perché hai abbandonato l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, mentr’egli ti menava per la buona via?

18 E ora, che hai tu da fare sulla via che mena in Egitto per andare a bere l’acqua del Nilo? o che hai tu da fare sulla via che mena in Assiria per andare a bere l’acqua del fiume?

19 La tua propria malvagità è quella che ti castiga, e le tue infedeltà sono la tua punizione. Sappi dunque vedi che mala ed amara cosa è abbandonare l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, e il non aver di me alcun timore, dice il ignore, l’Eterno degli eserciti.

20 Già da lungo tempo tu hai spezzato il tuo giogo, rotti i tuoi legami e hai detto: "Non voglio più servire!" Ma sopra ogni alto colle e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante ti sei buttata giù come una prostituta.

21 Eppure, io t’avevo piantato come una nobile vigna tutta del miglior ceppo; come dunque mi ti sei mutato in rampolli degenerati di una vigna straniera?

22 Quand’anche tu ti lavassi col nitro e usassi molto sapone, la tua iniquità lascerebbe una macchia dinanzi a me, dice il Signore, l’Eterno.

23 Come puoi tu dire: "Io non mi son contaminata, non sono andata dietro ai Baal?" Guarda i tuoi passi nella valle, riconosci quello che hai fatto, dromedaria leggera e vagabonda!

24 Asina salvatica, avvezza al deserto, che aspira l’aria nell’ardore della sua passione, chi le impedirà di soddisfare la sua brama? Tutti quelli che la cercano non hanno da affaticarsi; la trovano nel suo mese.

25 Guarda che il tuo piede non si scalzi e che la tua gola non s’inaridisca! Ma tu hai detto: "Non c’è rimedio; no, io amo gli stranieri, e andrò dietro a loro!"

26 Come il ladro è confuso quand’è còlto sul fatto, così son confusi quelli della casa d’Israele: essi, i loro re, i loro capi, i loro sacerdoti e i loro profeti,

27 i quali dicono al legno: "Tu sei mio padre," e alla pietra: "Tu ci hai dato la vita!" Poich’essi m’han voltato le spalle e non la faccia; ma nel tempo della loro sventura dicono: "Lèvati e salvaci!"

28 E dove sono i tuoi dèi che ti sei fatti? Si levino, se ti posson salvare nel tempo della tua sventura! Perché, o Giuda, tu hai tanti dèi quante città.

29 Perché contendereste meco? Voi tutti mi siete stati infedeli, dice l’Eterno.

30 Invano ho colpito i vostri figliuoli; non ne hanno ricevuto correzione; la vostra spada ha divorato i vostri profeti, come un leone distruttore.

31 O generazione, considera la parola dell’Eterno! Son io stato un deserto per Israele? o un paese di fitte tenebre? Perché dice il mio popolo: "Noi siamo liberi, non vogliamo tornar più a te?"

32 La fanciulla può essa dimenticare i suoi ornamenti, o la sposa la sua cintura? Eppure, il mio popolo ha dimenticato me, da giorni innumerevoli.

33 Come sei brava a trovar la via per correr dietro ai tuoi amori! Perfino alle male femmine hai insegnato i tuoi modi!

34 Fino nei lembi della tua veste si trova il sangue di poveri innocenti, che tu non hai còlto in flagrante delitto di scasso;

35 eppure, dopo tutto questo, tu dici: "Io sono innocente; certo, l’ira sua s’è stornata da me". Ecco, io entrerò in giudizio con te, perché hai detto: "Non ho peccato".

36 Perché hai tanta premura di mutare il tuo cammino? Anche dall’Egitto riceverai confusione, come già l’hai ricevuta dall’Assiria.

37 Anche di là uscirai con le mani sul capo; perché l’Eterno rigetta quelli ne’ quali tu confidi, e tu non riuscirai nel tuo intento per loro mezzo.
