1 They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD. 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. 3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed. 4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth? 5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

6 The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. 7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. 9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks. 10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD. 11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever. 13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD. 14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: 15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more. 17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart. 18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers. 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.

20 Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD. 21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God. 22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God. 23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. 24 For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

1 Il dit: Lorsqu'un homme répudie sa femme, Qu'elle le quitte et devient la femme d'un autre, Cet homme retourne-t-il encore vers elle? Le pays même ne serait-il pas souillé? Et toi, tu t'es prostituée à de nombreux amants, Et tu reviendrais à moi! dit l'Eternel.

2 Lève tes yeux vers les hauteurs, et regarde! Où ne t'es-tu pas prostituée! Tu te tenais sur les chemins, comme l'Arabe dans le désert, Et tu as souillé le pays par tes prostitutions et par ta méchanceté.

3 Aussi les pluies ont-elles été retenues, Et la pluie du printemps a-t-elle manqué; Mais tu as eu le front d'une femme prostituée, Tu n'as pas voulu avoir honte.

4 Maintenant, n'est-ce pas? tu cries vers moi: Mon père! Tu as été l'ami de ma jeunesse!

5 Gardera-t-il à toujours sa colère? La conservera-t-il à jamais? Et voici, tu as dit, tu as fait des choses criminelles, tu les as consommées.

6 L'Eternel me dit, au temps du roi Josias: As-tu vu ce qu'a fait l'infidèle Israël? Elle est allée sur toute montagne élevée et sous tout arbre vert, et là elle s'est prostituée.

7 Je disais: Après avoir fait toutes ces choses, elle reviendra à moi. Mais elle n'est pas revenue. Et sa soeur, la perfide Juda, en a été témoin.

8 Quoique j'eusse répudié l'infidèle Israël à cause de tous ses adultères, et que je lui eusse donné sa lettre de divorce, j'ai vu que la perfide Juda, sa soeur, n'a point eu de crainte, et qu'elle est allée se prostituer pareillement.

9 Par sa criante impudicité Israël a souillé le pays, elle a commis un adultère avec la pierre et le bois.

10 Malgré tout cela, la perfide Juda, sa soeur, n'est pas revenue à moi de tout son coeur; c'est avec fausseté qu'elle l'a fait, dit l'Eternel.

11 L'Eternel me dit: L'infidèle Israël paraît innocente En comparaison de la perfide Juda.

12 Va, crie ces paroles vers le septentrion, et dis: Reviens, infidèle Israël! dit l'Eternel. Je ne jetterai pas sur vous un regard sévère; Car je suis miséricordieux, dit l'Eternel, Je ne garde pas ma colère à toujours.

13 Reconnais seulement ton iniquité, Reconnais que tu as été infidèle à l'Eternel, ton Dieu, Que tu as dirigé çà et là tes pas vers les dieux étrangers, Sous tout arbre vert, Et que tu n'as pas écouté ma voix, dit l'Eternel.

14 Revenez, enfants rebelles, dit l'Eternel; Car je suis votre maître. Je vous prendrai, un d'une ville, deux d'une famille, Et je vous ramènerai dans Sion.

15 Je vous donnerai des bergers selon mon coeur, Et ils vous paîtront avec intelligence et avec sagesse.

16 Lorsque vous aurez multiplié et fructifié dans le pays, En ces jours-là, dit l'Eternel, On ne parlera plus de l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel; Elle ne viendra plus à la pensée; On ne se la rappellera plus, on ne s'apercevra plus de son absence, Et l'on n'en fera point une autre.

17 En ce temps-là, on appellera Jérusalem le trône de l'Eternel; Toutes les nations s'assembleront à Jérusalem, au nom de l'Eternel, Et elles ne suivront plus les penchants de leur mauvais coeur.

18 En ces jours, La maison de Juda marchera avec la maison d'Israël; Elles viendront ensemble du pays du septentrion Au pays dont j'ai donné la possession à vos pères.

19 Je disais: Comment te mettrai-je parmi mes enfants, Et te donnerai-je un pays de délices, Un héritage, le plus bel ornement des nations? Je disais: Tu m'appelleras: Mon père! Et tu ne te détourneras pas de moi.

20 Mais, comme une femme est infidèle à son amant, Ainsi vous m'avez été infidèles, maison d'Israël, Dit l'Eternel.

21 Une voix se fait entendre sur les lieux élevés; Ce sont les pleurs, les supplications des enfants d'Israël; Car ils ont perverti leur voie, Ils ont oublié l'Eternel, leur Dieu.

22 Revenez, enfants rebelles, Je pardonnerai vos infidélités. -Nous voici, nous allons à toi, Car tu es l'Eternel, notre Dieu.

23 Oui, le bruit qui vient des collines et des montagnes n'est que mensonge; Oui, c'est en l'Eternel, notre Dieu, qu'est le salut d'Israël.

24 Les idoles ont dévoré le produit du travail de nos pères, Dès notre jeunesse, Leurs brebis et leurs boeufs, leurs fils et leurs filles.

25 Nous avons notre honte pour couche, Et notre ignominie pour couverture; Car nous avons péché contre l'Eternel, notre Dieu, Nous et nos pères, dès notre jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour, Et nous n'avons pas écouté la voix de l'Eternel, notre Dieu. -

1 L’Eterno dice: Se un uomo ripudia la sua moglie e questa se ne va da lui e si marita a un altro, quell’uomo torna egli forse ancora da lei? Il paese stesso non ne sarebb’egli tutto profanato? E tu, che ti sei prostituita con molti amanti, ritorneresti a me? dice l’Eterno.

2 Alza gli occhi verso le alture, e guarda: Dov’è che non ti sei prostituita? Tu sedevi per le vie ad aspettare i passanti, come fa l’Arabo nel deserto, e hai contaminato il paese con le tue prostituzioni e con le tue malvagità.

3 Perciò le grandi piogge sono state trattenute, e non v’è stata pioggia di primavera; ma tu hai avuto una fronte da prostituta, e non hai voluto vergognarti.

4 E ora, non è egli vero? tu gridi a me: "Padre mio, tu sei stato l’amico della mia giovinezza!

5 Sarà egli adirato in perpetuo? Serberà egli la sua ira sino alla fine?" Ecco, tu parli così, ma intanto commetti a tutto potere delle male azioni!

6 L’Eterno mi disse al tempo del re Giosia: "Hai tu veduto quello che la infedele Israele ha fatto? E’ ndata sopra ogni alto monte e sotto ogni albero verdeggiante, e quivi s’è prostituita.

7 Io dicevo: Dopo che avrà fatto tutte queste cose, essa tornerà a me; ma non è ritornata; e la sua sorella, la perfida Giuda, l’ha visto.

8 E benché io avessi ripudiato l’infedele Israele a cagione di tutti i suoi adulteri e le avessi dato la sua lettera di divorzio, ho visto che la sua sorella, la perfida Giuda, non ha avuto alcun timore, ed è andata a prostituirsi anch’essa.

9 Col rumore delle sue prostituzioni Israele ha contaminato il paese, e ha commesso adulterio con la pietra e col legno;

10 e nonostante tutto questo, la sua perfida sorella non è tornata a me con tutto il suo cuore, ma con finzione, dice l’Eterno".

11 E l’Eterno mi disse: "La infedele Israele s’è mostrata più giusta della perfida Giuda".

12 Va’, proclama queste parole verso il settentrione, e di’: Torna, o infedele Israele, dice l’Eterno; io non vi mostrerò un viso accigliato, giacché io son misericordioso, dice l’Eterno, e non serbo l’ira in perpetuo.

13 Soltanto riconosci la tua iniquità: tu sei stata infedele all’Eterno, al tuo Dio, hai vòlto qua e là i tuoi passi verso gli stranieri, sotto ogni albero verdeggiante, e non hai dato ascolto alla mia voce, dice l’Eterno.

14 Tornate o figliuoli traviati, dice l’Eterno, poiché io sono il vostro signore, e vi prenderò, uno da una città, due da una famiglia, e vi ricondurrò a Sion;

15 e vi darò dei pastori secondo il mio cuore, che vi pasceranno con conoscenza e con intelligenza.

16 E quando sarete moltiplicati e avrete fruttato nel paese, allora, dice l’Eterno, non si dirà più: "L’arca del patto dell’Eterno!" non vi si penserà più, non la si menzionerà più, non la si rimpiangerà più, non se e farà un’altra.

17 Allora Gerusalemme sarà chiamata "il trono dell’Eterno"; tutte le nazioni si raduneranno a Gerusalemme nel nome dell’Eterno, e non cammineranno più secondo la caparbietà del loro cuore malvagio.

18 In quei giorni, la casa di Giuda camminerà con la casa d’Israele, e verranno assieme dal paese del settentrione al paese ch’io detti in eredità ai vostri padri.

19 Io avevo detto: "Oh qual posto ti darò tra i miei figliuoli! Che paese delizioso ti darò! la più bella eredità delle nazioni!" Avevo detto: "Tu mi chiamerai: Padre mio! E non cesserai di seguirmi".

20 Ma, proprio come una donna è infedele al suo amante, così voi mi siete stati infedeli, o casa d’Israele! ice l’Eterno.

21 Una voce s’è fatta udire sulle alture; sono i pianti, le supplicazioni de’ figliuoli d’Israele, perché hanno pervertito la loro via, hanno dimenticato l’Eterno, il loro Dio.

22 "Tornate, o figliuoli traviati, io vi guarirò dei vostri traviamenti!" "Eccoci, noi veniamo a te, perché tu sei l’Eterno, il nostro Dio.

23 Sì, certo, vano è il soccorso che s’aspetta dalle alture, dalle feste strepitose sui monti; sì, nell’Eterno, nel nostro Dio, sta la salvezza d’Israele.

24 Quella vergogna, che son gl’idoli, ha divorato il prodotto della fatica de’ nostri padri fin dalla nostra giovinezza, le loro pecore e i loro buoi, i loro figliuoli e le loro figliuole.

25 Giaciamoci nella nostra vergogna e ci copra la nostra ignominia! poiché abbiam peccato contro l’Eterno, il nostro Dio: noi e i nostri padri, dalla nostra fanciullezza fino a questo giorno; e non abbiam dato ascolto alla voce dell’Eterno, ch’è il nostro Dio".
