1 And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2 But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah. 3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us. 4 Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison. 5 Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

6 Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7 Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. 8 And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire. 9 Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart. 10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

11 And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, 12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people. 13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14 Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. 15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

16 When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; 17 Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18 Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison? 19 Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20 Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. 21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

1 Sédécias, fils de Josias, régna à la place de Jeconia, fils de Jojakim, et fut établi roi dans le pays de Juda par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone.

2 Ni lui, ni ses serviteurs, ni le peuple du pays, n'écoutèrent les paroles que l'Eternel prononça par Jérémie, le prophète.

3 Le roi Sédécias envoya Jucal, fils de Schélémia, et Sophonie, fils de Maaséja, le sacrificateur, vers Jérémie, le prophète, pour lui dire: Intercède en notre faveur auprès de l'Eternel, notre Dieu.

4 Or Jérémie allait et venait parmi le peuple; on ne l'avait pas encore mis en prison.

5 L'armée de Pharaon était sortie d'Egypte; et les Chaldéens, qui assiégeaient Jérusalem, ayant appris cette nouvelle, s'étaient retirés de Jérusalem.

6 Alors la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, en ces mots:

7 Ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: Vous direz au roi de Juda, qui vous a envoyés vers moi pour me consulter: Voici, l'armée de Pharaon, qui était en marche pour vous secourir, retourne dans son pays, en Egypte;

8 et les Chaldéens reviendront, ils attaqueront cette ville, ils la prendront, et la brûleront par le feu.

9 Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Ne vous faites pas d'illusion, en disant: Les Chaldéens s'en iront loin de nous! Car ils ne s'en iront pas.

10 Et même quand vous battriez toute l'armée des Chaldéens qui vous font la guerre, quand il ne resterait d'eux que des hommes blessés, ils se relèveraient chacun dans sa tente, et brûleraient cette ville par le feu.

11 Pendant que l'armée des Chaldéens s'était éloignée de Jérusalem, à cause de l'armée de Pharaon,

12 Jérémie voulut sortir de Jérusalem, pour aller dans le pays de Benjamin et s'échapper du milieu du peuple.

13 Lorsqu'il fut à la porte de Benjamin, le commandant de la garde, nommé Jireija, fils de Schélémia, fils de Hanania, se trouvait là, et il saisit Jérémie, le prophète, en disant: Tu passes aux Chaldéens!

14 Jérémie répondit: C'est faux! je ne passe pas aux Chaldéens. Mais Jireija ne l'écouta point; il arrêta Jérémie, et le conduisit devant les chefs.

15 Les chefs, irrités contre Jérémie, le frappèrent, et le mirent en prison dans la maison de Jonathan, le secrétaire; car ils en avaient fait une prison.

16 Ce fut ainsi que Jérémie entra dans la prison et dans les cachots, où il resta longtemps.

17 Le roi Sédécias l'envoya chercher, et l'interrogea secrètement dans sa maison. Il dit: Y a-t-il une parole de la part de l'Eternel? Jérémie répondit: Oui. Et il ajouta: Tu seras livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone.

18 Jérémie dit encore au roi Sédécias: En quoi ai-je péché contre toi, contre tes serviteurs, et contre ce peuple, pour que vous m'ayez mis en prison?

19 Et où sont vos prophètes qui vous prophétisaient, en disant: Le roi de Babylone ne viendra pas contre vous, ni contre ce pays?

20 Maintenant, écoute, je te prie, ô roi, mon seigneur, et que mes supplications soient favorablement reçues devant toi! Ne me renvoie pas dans la maison de Jonathan, le secrétaire, de peur que je n'y meure!

21 Le roi Sédécias ordonna qu'on gardât Jérémie dans la cour de la prison, et qu'on lui donnât chaque jour un pain de la rue des boulangers, jusqu'à ce que tout le pain de la ville fût consommé. Ainsi Jérémie demeura dans la cour de la prison.

2 Ma né egli, né i suoi servitori, né il popolo del paese dettero ascolto alle parole che l’Eterno avea pronunziate per mezzo del profeta Geremia.

3 Il re Sedekia mandò Jehucal, figliuolo di Scelemia, e Sofonia, figliuolo di Maaseia, il sacerdote, dal profeta Geremia, per dirgli: "Deh, prega per noi l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro".

4 Or Geremia andava e veniva fra il popolo, e non era ancora stato messo in prigione.

5 L’esercito di Faraone era uscito d’Egitto; e come i Caldei che assediavano Gerusalemme n’ebbero ricevuto la notizia, tolsero l’assedio a Gerusalemme.

6 Allora la parola dell’Eterno fu rivolta al profeta Geremia, in questi termini:

7 "Così parla l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: Dite così al re di Giuda che vi ha mandati da me per consultarmi: Ecco, l’esercito di Faraone ch’era uscito in vostro soccorso, è tornato nel suo paese, in Egitto;

8 e i Caldei torneranno, e combatteranno contro questa città, la prenderanno, e la daranno alle fiamme.

9 Così parla l’Eterno: Non ingannate voi stessi dicendo: Certo, i Caldei se n’andranno da noi, perché non se n’andranno.

10 Anzi, quand’anche voi sconfiggeste tutto l’esercito de’ Caldei che combatte contro di voi, e non ne rimanesse che degli uomini feriti, questi si leverebbero, ciascuno nella sua tenda, e darebbero questa città alle fiamme".

11 Or quando l’esercito de’ Caldei si fu ritirato d’innanzi a Gerusalemme a motivo dell’esercito di araone,

12 Geremia uscì da Gerusalemme per andare nel paese di Beniamino, per ricever quivi la sua porzione in mezzo al popolo.

13 Ma quando fu alla porta di Beniamino, c’era quivi un capitano della guardia, per nome Ireia, figliuolo di Scelemia, figliuolo di Hanania, il quale arrestò il profeta Geremia, dicendo: "Tu vai ad arrenderti ai Caldei".

14 E Geremia rispose: "E’ falso; io non vado ad arrendermi ai Caldei"; ma l’altro non gli diede ascolto; rrestò Geremia, e lo menò dai capi.

15 E i capi s’adirarono contro Geremia, lo percossero, e lo misero in prigione nella casa di Gionathan, il segretario; perché di quella avean fatto un carcere.

16 Quando Geremia fu entrato nella prigione sotterranea fra le segrete, e vi fu rimasto molti giorni,

17 il re Sedekia lo mandò a prendere, lo interrogò in casa sua, di nascosto, e gli disse: "C’è egli qualche parola da parte dell’Eterno?" E Geremia rispose: "Sì, c’è". E aggiunse: "Tu sarai dato in mano del re di Babilonia".

18 Geremia disse inoltre al re Sedekia: "Che peccato ho io commesso contro di te o contro i tuoi servitori o contro questo popolo, che m’avete messo in prigione?

19 E dove sono ora i vostri profeti che vi profetavano dicendo: Il re di Babilonia non verrà contro di voi né contro questo paese?

20 Ora ascolta, ti prego, o re, mio signore; e la mia supplicazione giunga bene accolta nel tuo cospetto; on mi far tornare nella casa di Gionathan lo scriba, sì ch’io vi muoia".

21 Allora il re Sedekia ordinò che Geremia fosse custodito nel cortile della prigione, e gli fosse dato tutti i giorni un pane dalla via de’ fornai, finché tutto il pane della città fosse consumato. Così Geremia rimase nel cortile della prigione.
