1 The word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles; 2 Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaoh-necho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah. 3 Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle. 4 Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines. 5 Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD. 6 Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates. 7 Who is this that cometh up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers? 8 Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof. 9 Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow. 10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates. 11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.

12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.

13 The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt. 14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee. 15 Why are thy valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them. 16 He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword. 17 They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed. 18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come. 19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant. 20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north. 21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation. 22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood. 23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable. 24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north. 25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him: 26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.

27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid. 28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

1 La parole de l'Eternel qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, sur les nations.

2 Sur l'Egypte. Sur l'armée de Pharaon Neco, roi d'Egypte, qui était près du fleuve de l'Euphrate, à Carkemisch, et qui fut battue par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, la quatrième année de Jojakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda.

3 Préparez le petit et le grand bouclier, Et marchez au combat!

4 Attelez les chevaux, Montez, cavaliers! Paraissez avec vos casques, Polissez vos lances, Revêtez la cuirasse!...

5 Que vois-je? Ils ont peur, ils reculent; Leurs vaillants hommes sont battus; Ils fuient sans se retourner... L'épouvante est de toutes parts, dit l'Eternel.

6 Que le plus léger ne trouve aucun salut dans la fuite, Que le plus vaillant n'échappe pas! Au septentrion, sur les rives de l'Euphrate, Ils chancellent, ils tombent.

7 Qui est celui qui s'avance comme le Nil, Et dont les eaux sont agitées comme les torrents?

8 C'est l'Egypte. Elle s'avance comme le Nil, Et ses eaux sont agitées comme les torrents. Elle dit: Je monterai, je couvrirai la terre, Je détruirai les villes et leurs habitants.

9 Montez, chevaux! précipitez-vous, chars! Qu'ils se montrent, les vaillants hommes, Ceux d'Ethiopie et de Puth qui portent le bouclier, Et ceux de Lud qui manient et tendent l'arc!

10 Ce jour est au Seigneur, à l'Eternel des armées; C'est un jour de vengeance, où il se venge de ses ennemis. L'épée dévore, elle se rassasie, Elle s'enivre de leur sang. Car il y a des victimes du Seigneur, de l'Eternel des armées, Au pays du septentrion, sur les rives de l'Euphrate.

11 Monte en Galaad, prends du baume, Vierge, fille de l'Egypte! En vain tu multiplies les remèdes, Il n'y a point de guérison pour toi.

12 Les nations apprennent ta honte, Et tes cris remplissent la terre, Car les guerriers chancellent l'un sur l'autre, Ils tombent tous ensemble.

13 La parole qui fut adressée par l'Eternel à Jérémie, le prophète, sur l'arrivée de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, qui voulait frapper le pays d'Egypte.

14 Annoncez-le en Egypte, Publiez-le à Migdol, Publiez-le à Noph et à Tachpanès! Dites: Lève-toi, prépare-toi, Car l'épée dévore autour de toi!

15 Pourquoi tes vaillants hommes sont-ils emportés? Ils ne tiennent pas ferme, car l'Eternel les renverse.

16 Il en fait chanceler un grand nombre; Ils tombent l'un sur l'autre, et ils disent: Allons, retournons vers notre peuple, Dans notre pays natal, Loin du glaive destructeur!

17 Là, on s'écrie: Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, Ce n'est qu'un bruit; il a laissé passer le moment.

18 Je suis vivant! dit le roi, Dont l'Eternel des armées est le nom, Comme le Thabor parmi les montagnes, Comme le Carmel qui s'avance dans la mer, il viendra.

19 Fais ton bagage pour la captivité, Habitante, fille de L'Egypte! Car Noph deviendra un désert, Elle sera ravagée, elle n'aura plus d'habitants.

20 L'Egypte est une très belle génisse... Le destructeur vient du septentrion, il arrive...

21 Ses mercenaires aussi sont au milieu d'elle comme des veaux engraissés. Et eux aussi, ils tournent le dos, ils fuient tous sans résister. Car le jour de leur malheur fond sur eux, Le temps de leur châtiment.

22 Sa voix se fait entendre comme celle du serpent; Car ils s'avancent avec une armée, Ils marchent contre elle avec des haches, Pareils à des bûcherons.

23 Ils abattent sa forêt, dit l'Eternel, Bien qu'elle soit impénétrable; Car ils sont plus nombreux que les sauterelles, On ne pourrait les compter.

24 La fille de l'Egypte est confuse, Elle est livrée entre les mains du peuple du septentrion.

25 L'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: Voici, je vais châtier Amon de No, Pharaon, l'Egypte, ses dieux et ses rois, Pharaon et ceux qui se confient en lui.

26 Je les livrerai entre les mains de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie, Entre les mains de Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, Et entre les mains de ses serviteurs; Et après cela, l'Egypte sera habitée comme aux jours d'autrefois, Dit l'Eternel.

27 Et toi, mon serviteur Jacob, ne crains pas; Ne t'effraie pas, Israël! Car je te délivrerai de la terre lointaine, Je délivrerai ta postérité du pays où elle est captive; Jacob reviendra, il jouira du repos et de la tranquillité, Et il n'y aura personne pour le troubler.

28 Toi, mon serviteur Jacob, ne crains pas! dit l'Eternel; Car je suis avec toi. J'anéantirai toutes les nations parmi lesquelles je t'ai dispersé, Mais toi, je ne t'anéantirai pas; Je te châtierai avec équité, Je ne puis pas te laisser impuni.

2 Riguardo all’Egitto. Circa l’esercito di Faraone Neco, re d’Egitto, che era presso al fiume Eufrate a Carkemish, e che Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, sconfisse il quarto anno di Joiakim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda.

3 Preparate lo scudo e la targa, e avvicinatevi per la battaglia.

4 Attaccate i cavalli, e voi, cavalieri, montate, e presentatevi con gli elmi in capo; forbite le lance, indossate le corazze!

5 Perché li veggo io sbigottiti, vòlti in rotta? I loro prodi sono sconfitti, si dànno alla fuga senza volgersi indietro; d’ogn’intorno è terrore, dice l’Eterno.

6 Il veloce non fugga, il prode non scampi! Al settentrione, presso il fiume Eufrate vacillano e cadono.

7 Chi è colui che sale come il Nilo, e le cui acque s’agitano come quelle de’ fiumi?

8 E’ l’Egitto, che sale come il Nilo, e le cui acque s’agitano come quelle de’ fiumi. Egli dice: "Io salirò, ricoprirò la terra, distruggerò le città e i loro abitanti".

9 All’assalto! cavalli; al galoppo! carri; si facciano avanti i prodi, quei d’Etiopia e di Put che portan lo scudo e que’ di Lud che maneggiano e tendono l’arco.

10 Questo giorno, per il Signore, per l’Eterno degli eserciti, è giorno di vendetta, in cui si vendica de’ suoi nemici. La spada divorerà, si sazierà, s’inebrierà del loro sangue; poiché il Signore, l’Eterno degli eserciti, immola le vittime nel paese del settentrione, presso il fiume Eufrate.

11 Sali a Galaad, prendi del balsamo, o vergine, figliuola d’Egitto! Invano moltiplichi i rimedi; non v’è medicatura che valga per te.

12 Le nazioni odono la tua ignominia, e la terra è piena del tuo grido; poiché il prode vacilla appoggiandosi al prode, ambedue cadono assieme.

13 Parola che l’Eterno rivolse al profeta Geremia sulla venuta di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, per colpire il paese d’Egitto.

14 Annunziatelo in Egitto, banditelo a Migdol, banditelo a Nof e a Tahpanes! Dite: "Lèvati, preparati, poiché la spada divora tutto ciò che ti circonda".

15 Perché i tuoi prodi son essi atterrati? Non posson resistere perché l’Eterno li abbatte.

16 Egli ne fa vacillar molti; essi cadono l’un sopra l’altro, e dicono: "Andiamo, torniamo al nostro popolo e al nostro paese natìo, sottraendoci alla spada micidiale".

17 Là essi gridano: "Faraone, re d’Egitto, non è che un vano rumore, ha lasciato passare il tempo fissato".

18 Com’è vero ch’io vivo, dice il Re che ha nome l’Eterno degli eserciti, il nemico verrà come un Tabor fra le montagne, come un Carmel che s’avanza sul mare.

19 O figliuola che abiti l’Egitto, fa’ il tuo bagaglio per la cattività! poiché Nof diventerà una desolazione sarà devastata, nessuno v’abiterà più.

20 L’Egitto è una giovenca bellissima, ma viene un tafano, viene dal settentrione.

21 Anche i mercenari che sono in mezzo all’Egitto son come vitelli da ingrasso; anch’essi volgono il orso, fuggon tutti assieme, non resistono; poiché piomba su loro il giorno della loro calamità, il tempo della loro visitazione.

22 La sua voce giunge come quella d’un serpente; poiché s’avanzano con un esercito, marcian contro a lui con scuri, come tanti tagliaboschi.

23 Essi abbattono la sua foresta, dice l’Eterno, benché sia impenetrabile, perché quelli son più numerosi delle locuste, non si posson contare.

24 La figliuola dell’Egitto è coperta d’onta, è data in mano del popolo del settentrione.

25 L’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele, dice: Ecco, io punirò Amon di No, Faraone, l’Egitto, i suoi dèi, i suoi re, Faraone e quelli che confidano in lui;

26 li darò in mano di quei che cercano la loro vita, in mano di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, e in mano de’ suoi servitori; ma, dopo questo, l’Egitto sarà abitato come ai giorni di prima, dice l’Eterno.

27 Tu dunque non temere, o Giacobbe mio servitore, non ti sgomentare, o Israele! poiché, ecco, io ti salverò dal lontano paese, salverò la tua progenie dalla terra della sua cattività; Giacobbe ritornerà, sarà in riposo, sarà tranquillo, e nessuno più lo spaventerà.

28 Tu non temere, o Giacobbe, mio servitore, dice l’Eterno; poiché io son teco, io annienterò tutte le nazioni fra le quali t’ho disperso, ma non annienterò te; però ti castigherò con giusta misura, e non ti lascerò del tutto impunito.
