1 Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. 2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. 3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. 4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God. 5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds. 6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the evenings shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.

7 How shall I pardon thee for this? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. 8 They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. 9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD’s. 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, saith the LORD. 12 They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: 13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. 15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say. 16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men. 17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword. 18 Nevertheless in those days, saith the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.

19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.

20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, 21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: 22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it? 23 But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. 24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. 26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men. 27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. 28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. 29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

30 A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

1 Parcourez les rues de Jérusalem, Regardez, informez-vous, cherchez dans les places, S'il s'y trouve un homme, s'il y en a un Qui pratique la justice, qui s'attache à la vérité, Et je pardonne à Jérusalem.

2 Même quand ils disent: L'Eternel est vivant! C'est faussement qu'ils jurent.

3 Eternel, tes yeux n'aperçoivent-ils pas la vérité? Tu les frappes, et ils ne sentent rien; Tu les consumes, et ils ne veulent pas recevoir instruction; Ils prennent un visage plus dur que le roc, Ils refusent de se convertir.

4 Je disais: Ce ne sont que les petits; Ils agissent en insensés, parce qu'ils ne connaissent pas la voie de l'Eternel, La loi de leur Dieu.

5 J'irai vers les grands, et je leur parlerai; Car eux, ils connaissent la voie de l'Eternel, La loi de leur Dieu; Mais ils ont tous aussi brisé le joug, Rompu les liens.

6 C'est pourquoi le lion de la forêt les tue, Le loup du désert les détruit, La panthère est aux aguets devant leurs villes; Tous ceux qui en sortiront seront déchirés; Car leurs transgressions sont nombreuses, Leurs infidélités se sont multipliées.

7 Pourquoi te pardonnerais-je? Tes enfants m'ont abandonné, Et ils jurent par des dieux qui n'existent pas. J'ai reçu leurs serments, et ils se livrent à l'adultère, Ils sont en foule dans la maison de la prostituée.

8 Semblables à des chevaux bien nourris, qui courent çà et là, Ils hennissent chacun après la femme de son prochain.

9 Ne châtierais-je pas ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel, Ne me vengerais-je pas d'une pareille nation?

10 Montez sur ses murailles, et abattez, Mais ne détruisez pas entièrement! Enlevez ses ceps Qui n'appartiennent point à l'Eternel!

11 Car la maison d'Israël et la maison de Juda m'ont été infidèles, Dit l'Eternel.

12 Ils renient l'Eternel, ils disent: Il n'existe pas! Et le malheur ne viendra pas sur nous, Nous ne verrons ni l'épée ni la famine.

13 Les prophètes ne sont que du vent, Et personne ne parle en eux. Qu'il leur soit fait ainsi!

14 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées: Parce que vous avez dit cela, Voici, je veux que ma parole dans ta bouche soit du feu, Et ce peuple du bois, et que ce feu les consume.

15 Voici, je fais venir de loin une nation contre vous, maison d'Israël, Dit l'Eternel; C'est une nation forte, c'est une nation ancienne, Une nation dont tu ne connais pas la langue, Et dont tu ne comprendras point les paroles.

16 Son carquois est comme un sépulcre ouvert; Ils sont tous des héros.

17 Elle dévorera ta moisson et ton pain, Elle dévorera tes fils et tes filles, Elle dévorera tes brebis et tes boeufs, Elle dévorera ta vigne et ton figuier; Elle détruira par l'épée tes villes fortes dans lesquelles tu te confies.

18 Mais en ces jours, dit l'Eternel, Je ne vous détruirai pas entièrement.

19 Si vous dites alors: Pourquoi l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous fait-il tout cela? Tu leur répondras: Comme vous m'avez abandonné, Et que vous avez servi des dieux étrangers dans votre pays, Ainsi vous servirez des étrangers dans un pays qui n'est pas le vôtre.

20 Annoncez ceci à la maison de Jacob, Publiez-le en Juda, et dites:

21 Ecoutez ceci, peuple insensé, et qui n'as point de coeur! Ils ont des yeux et ne voient point, Ils ont des oreilles et n'entendent point.

22 Ne me craindrez-vous pas, dit l'Eternel, Ne tremblerez-vous pas devant moi? C'est moi qui ai donné à la mer le sable pour limite, Limite éternelle qu'elle ne doit pas franchir; Ses flots s'agitent, mais ils sont impuissants; Ils mugissent, mais ils ne la franchissent pas.

23 Ce peuple a un coeur indocile et rebelle; Ils se révoltent, et s'en vont.

24 Ils ne disent pas dans leur coeur: Craignons l'Eternel, notre Dieu, Qui donne la pluie en son temps, La pluie de la première et de l'arrière saison, Et qui nous réserve les semaines destinées à la moisson.

25 C'est à cause de vos iniquités que ces dispensations n'ont pas lieu, Ce sont vos péchés qui vous privent de ces biens.

26 Car il se trouve parmi mon peuple des méchants; Ils épient comme l'oiseleur qui dresse des pièges, Ils tendent des filets, et prennent des hommes.

27 Comme une cage est remplie d'oiseaux, Leurs maisons sont remplies de fraude; C'est ainsi qu'ils deviennent puissants et riches.

28 Ils s'engraissent, ils sont brillants d'embonpoint; Ils dépassent toute mesure dans le mal, Ils ne défendent pas la cause, la cause de l'orphelin, et ils prospèrent; Ils ne font pas droit aux indigents.

29 Ne châtierais-je pas ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel, Ne me vengerais-je pas d'une pareille nation?

30 Des choses horribles, abominables, Se font dans le pays.

31 Les prophètes prophétisent avec fausseté, Les sacrificateurs dominent sous leur conduite, Et mon peuple prend plaisir à cela. Que ferez-vous à la fin?

1 Andate attorno per le vie di Gerusalemme, e guardate, e informatevi, e cercate per le sue piazze se vi trovate un uomo, se ve n’è uno solo che operi giustamente, che cerchi la fedeltà; e io perdonerò Gerusalemme.

2 Anche quando dicono: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno vive," è certo che giurano il falso.

3 O Eterno, gli occhi tuoi non cercano essi la fedeltà? Tu li colpisci, e quelli non sentono nulla; tu li consumi, e quelli rifiutano di ricevere la correzione; essi han reso il loro volto più duro della roccia, rifiutano di convertirsi.

4 Io dicevo: "Questi non son che i miseri; sono insensati perché non conoscono la via dell’Eterno, la legge del loro Dio;

5 io andrò dai grandi e parlerò loro, perch’essi conoscono la via dell’Eterno, la legge del loro Dio"; ma anch’essi tutti quanti hanno spezzato il giogo, hanno rotto i legami.

6 Perciò il leone della foresta li uccide, il lupo del deserto li distrugge, il leopardo sta in agguato presso le loro città; chiunque ne uscirà sarà sbranato, perché le loro trasgressioni son numerose, le loro infedeltà sono aumentate.

7 Perché ti perdonerei io? I tuoi figliuoli m’hanno abbandonato, e giurano per degli dèi che non esistono. Io li ho satollati ed essi si dànno all’adulterio, e s’affollano nelle case di prostituzione.

8 Sono come tanti stalloni ben pasciuti ed ardenti; ognun d’essi nitrisce dietro la moglie del prossimo.

9 Non li punirei io per queste cose? dice l’Eterno; e l’anima mia non si vendicherebbe d’una simile nazione?

10 Salite sulle sue mura e distruggete, ma non la finite del tutto; portate via i suoi tralci, perché non son dell’Eterno!

11 Poiché la casa d’Israele e la casa di Giuda m’hanno tradito, dice l’Eterno.

12 Rinnegano l’Eterno, e dicono: "Non esiste; nessun male ci verrà addosso, noi non vedremo né spada né fame;

13 i profeti non sono che vento, e nessuno parla in essi. Quel che minacciano sia fatto a loro!"

14 Perciò così parla l’Eterno, l’Iddio degli eserciti: Perché avete detto quelle parole, ecco, io farò che la parola mia sia come fuoco nella tua bocca, che questo popolo sia come legno, e che quel fuoco lo divori.

15 Ecco, io faccio venire da lungi una nazione contro di voi, o casa d’Israele, dice l’Eterno; una nazione valorosa, una nazione antica, una nazione della quale tu non conosci la lingua e non intendi le parole.

16 Il suo turcasso è un sepolcro aperto; tutti quanti son dei prodi.

17 Essa divorerà le tue mèssi e il tuo pane, divorerà i tuoi figliuoli e le tue figliuole, divorerà le tue pecore e i tuoi buoi, divorerà le tue vigne e i tuoi fichi; abbatterà con la spada le tue città forti nelle quali confidi.

18 Ma anche in quei giorni, dice l’Eterno, io non ti finirò del tutto.

19 E quando direte: "Perché l’Eterno, il nostro Dio, ci ha egli fatto tutto questo?" tu risponderai loro: Come voi m’avete abbandonato e avete servito degli dèi stranieri nel vostro paese, così servirete degli stranieri in un paese che non è vostro".

20 Annunziate questo alla casa di Giacobbe, banditelo in Giuda, e dite:

21 Ascoltate ora questo, o popolo stolto e senza cuore, che ha occhi e non vede, che ha orecchi e non ode.

22 Non mi temerete voi? dice l’Eterno; non temerete voi dinanzi a me che ho posto la rena per limite al mare, barriera eterna, ch’esso non oltrepasserà mai? I suoi flutti s’agitano, ma sono impotenti; muggono, ma non la sormontano.

23 Ma questo popolo ha un cuore indocile e ribelle; si voltano indietro e se ne vanno.

24 Non dicono in cuor loro: "Temiamo l’Eterno, il nostro Dio, che dà la pioggia a suo tempo: la pioggia della prima e dell’ultima stagione, che ci mantiene le settimane fissate per la mietitura".

25 Le vostre iniquità hanno sconvolto queste cose, e i vostri peccati v’han privato del benessere.

26 Poiché fra il mio popolo si trovan degli empi che spiano, come uccellatori in agguato; essi tendon tranelli, acchiappano uomini.

27 Come una gabbia e piena d’uccelli, così le loro case son piene di frode; perciò diventan grandi e s’arricchiscono.

28 Ingrassano, hanno il volto lucente, oltrepassano ogni limite di male. Non difendono la causa, la causa dell’orfano, eppur prosperano; e non fanno giustizia nei processi de’ poveri.

29 E non punirei io queste cose? dice l’Eterno; e l’anima mia non si vendicherebbe di una simile nazione?

30 Cose spaventevoli e orride si fanno nel paese:

31 i profeti profetano bugiardamente; i sacerdoti governano agli ordini de’ profeti; e il mio popolo ha piacere che sia così. E che farete voi quando verrà la fine?
