1 The word that the LORD spake against Babylon and against the land of the Chaldeans by Jeremiah the prophet. 2 Declare ye among the nations, and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces. 3 For out of the north there cometh up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they shall remove, they shall depart, both man and beast.

4 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. 5 They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace. 7 All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. 8 Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the he goats before the flocks.

9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain. 10 And Chaldea shall be a spoil: all that spoil her shall be satisfied, saith the LORD. 11 Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; 12 Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13 Because of the wrath of the LORD it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate: every one that goeth by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14 Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about: all ye that bend the bow, shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she hath sinned against the LORD. 15 Shout against her round about: she hath given her hand: her foundations are fallen, her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance upon her; as she hath done, do unto her. 16 Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handleth the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people, and they shall flee every one to his own land.

17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. 18 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. 19 And I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. 20 In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.

21 Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee. 22 A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23 How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24 I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD. 25 The LORD hath opened his armoury, and hath brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord GOD of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. 26 Come against her from the utmost border, open her storehouses: cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly: let nothing of her be left. 27 Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation. 28 The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29 Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. 30 Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD. 31 Behold, I am against thee, O thou most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for thy day is come, the time that I will visit thee. 32 And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.

33 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. 34 Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 A sword is upon the Chaldeans, saith the LORD, and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. 36 A sword is upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword is upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed. 37 A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is upon her treasures; and they shall be robbed. 38 A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols. 39 Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. 40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. 41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. 42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. 43 The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. 44 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me? 45 Therefore hear ye the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. 46 At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved, and the cry is heard among the nations.

1 La parole que l'Eternel prononça sur Babylone, sur le pays des Chaldéens, par Jérémie, le prophète:

2 Annoncez-le parmi les nations, publiez-le, élevez une bannière! Publiez-le, ne cachez rien! Dites: Babylone est prise! Bel est confondu, Merodac est brisé! Ses idoles sont confondues, ses idoles sont brisées!

3 Car une nation monte contre elle du septentrion, Elle réduira son pays en désert, Il n'y aura plus d'habitants; Hommes et bêtes fuient, s'en vont.

4 En ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l'Eternel, Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda reviendront ensemble; Ils marcheront en pleurant, Et ils chercheront l'Eternel, leur Dieu.

5 Ils s'informeront du chemin de Sion, Ils tourneront vers elle leurs regards: Venez, attachez-vous à l'Eternel, Par une alliance éternelle qui ne soit jamais oubliée!

6 Mon peuple était un troupeau de brebis perdues; Leurs bergers les égaraient, les faisaient errer par les montagnes; Elles allaient des montagnes sur les collines, Oubliant leur bercail.

7 Tous ceux qui les trouvaient les dévoraient, Et leurs ennemis disaient: Nous ne sommes point coupables, Puisqu'ils ont péché contre l'Eternel, la demeure de la justice, Contre l'Eternel, l'espérance de leurs pères.

8 Fuyez de Babylone, sortez du pays des Chaldéens, Et soyez comme des boucs à la tête du troupeau!

9 Car voici, je vais susciter et faire monter contre Babylone Une multitude de grandes nations du pays du septentrion; Elles se rangeront en bataille contre elle, et s'en empareront; Leurs flèches sont comme un habile guerrier, Qui ne revient pas à vide.

10 Et la Chaldée sera livrée au pillage; Tous ceux qui la pilleront seront rassasiés, dit l'Eternel.

11 Oui, soyez dans la joie, dans l'allégresse, Vous qui avez pillé mon héritage! Oui, bondissez comme une génisse dans l'herbe, Hennissez comme des chevaux fougueux!

12 Votre mère est couverte de confusion, Celle qui vous a enfantés rougit de honte; Voici, elle est la dernière des nations, C'est un désert, une terre sèche et aride.

13 A cause de la colère de l'Eternel, elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera plus qu'une solitude. Tous ceux qui passeront près de Babylone Seront dans l'étonnement et siffleront sur toutes ses plaies.

14 Rangez-vous en bataille autour de Babylone, vous tous, archers! Tirez contre elle, n'épargnez pas les flèches! Car elle a péché contre l'Eternel.

15 Poussez de tous côtés contre elle un cri de guerre! Elle tend les mains; Ses fondements s'écroulent; Ses murs sont renversés. Car c'est la vengeance de l'Eternel. Vengez-vous sur elle! Faites-lui comme elle a fait!

16 Exterminez de Babylone celui qui sème, Et celui qui manie la faucille au temps de la moisson! Devant le glaive destructeur, Que chacun se tourne vers son peuple, Que chacun fuie vers son pays.

17 Israël est une brebis égarée, que les lions ont chassée; Le roi d'Assyrie l'a dévorée le premier; Et ce dernier lui a brisé les os, Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone.

18 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Voici, je châtierai le roi de Babylone et son pays, Comme j'ai châtié le roi d'Assyrie.

19 Je ramènerai Israël dans sa demeure; Il aura ses pâturages du Carmel et du Basan, Et son âme se rassasiera sur la montagne d'Ephraïm et dans Galaad.

20 En ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l'Eternel, On cherchera l'iniquité d'Israël, et elle n'existera plus, Le péché de Juda, et il ne se trouvera plus; Car je pardonnerai au reste que j'aurai laissé.

21 Monte contre le pays doublement rebelle, Contre ses habitants, et châtie-les! Poursuis, massacre, extermine-les! dit l'Eternel, Exécute entièrement mes ordres!

22 Des cris de guerre retentissent dans le pays, Et le désastre est grand.

23 Eh quoi! il est rompu, brisé, le marteau de toute la terre! Babylone est détruite au milieu des nations!

24 Je t'ai tendu un piège, et tu as été prise, Babylone, A l'improviste; Tu as été atteinte, saisie, Parce que tu as lutté contre l'Eternel.

25 L'Eternel a ouvert son arsenal, Et il en a tiré les armes de sa colère; Car c'est là une oeuvre du Seigneur, de l'Eternel des armées, Dans le pays des Chaldéens.

26 Pénétrez de toutes parts dans Babylone, ouvrez ses greniers, Faites-y des monceaux comme des tas de gerbes, Et détruisez-la! Qu'il ne reste plus rien d'elle!

27 Tuez tous ses taureaux, qu'on les égorge! Malheur à eux! car leur jour est arrivé, Le temps de leur châtiment.

28 Ecoutez les cris des fuyards, de ceux qui se sauvent du pays de Babylone Pour annoncer dans Sion la vengeance de l'Eternel, notre Dieu, La vengeance de son temple!

29 Appelez contre Babylone les archers, vous tous qui maniez l'arc! Campez autour d'elle, que personne n'échappe, Rendez-lui selon ses oeuvres, Faites-lui entièrement comme elle a fait! Car elle s'est élevée avec fierté contre l'Eternel, Contre le Saint d'Israël.

30 C'est pourquoi ses jeunes gens tomberont dans les rues, Et tous ses hommes de guerre périront en ce jour, Dit l'Eternel.

31 Voici, j'en veux à toi, orgueilleuse! Dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel des armées; Car ton jour est arrivé, Le temps de ton châtiment.

32 L'orgueilleuse chancellera et tombera, Et personne ne la relèvera; Je mettrai le feu à ses villes, Et il en dévorera tous les alentours.

33 Ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées: Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda sont ensemble opprimés; Tous ceux qui les ont emmenés captifs les retiennent, Et refusent de les relâcher.

34 Mais leur vengeur est puissant, Lui dont l'Eternel des armées est le nom; Il défendra leur cause, Afin de donner le repos au pays, Et de faire trembler les habitants de Babylone.

35 L'épée contre les Chaldéens! dit l'Eternel, Contre les habitants de Babylone, ses chefs et ses sages!

36 L'épée contre les prophètes de mensonge! qu'ils soient comme des insensés! L'épée contre ses vaillants hommes! qu'ils soient consternés!

37 L'épée contre ses chevaux et ses chars! Contre les gens de toute espèce qui sont au milieu d'elle! Qu'ils deviennent semblables à des femmes! L'épée contre ses trésors! qu'ils soient pillés!

38 La sécheresse contre ses eaux! qu'elles tarissent! Car c'est un pays d'idoles; Ils sont fous de leurs idoles.

39 C'est pourquoi les animaux du désert s'y établiront avec les chacals, Et les autruches y feront leur demeure; Elle ne sera plus jamais habitée, Elle ne sera plus jamais peuplée.

40 Comme Sodome et Gomorrhe, et les villes voisines, que Dieu détruisit, Dit l'Eternel, Elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera le séjour d'aucun homme.

41 Voici, un peuple vient du septentrion, Une grande nation et des rois puissants Se lèvent des extrémités de la terre.

42 Ils portent l'arc et le javelot; Ils sont cruels, sans miséricorde; Leur voix mugit comme la mer; Ils sont montés sur des chevaux, Prêts à combattre comme un seul homme, Contre toi, fille de Babylone!

43 Le roi de Babylone apprend la nouvelle, Et ses mains s'affaiblissent, L'angoisse le saisit, Comme la douleur d'une femme qui accouche...

44 Voici, tel qu'un lion, il monte des rives orgueilleuses du Jourdain Contre la demeure forte; Soudain je les en chasserai, Et j'établirai sur elle celui que j'ai choisi. Car qui est semblable à moi? qui me donnera des ordres? Et quel est le chef qui me résistera?

45 C'est pourquoi écoutez la résolution que l'Eternel a prise contre Babylone, Et les desseins qu'il a conçus contre le pays des Chaldéens! Certainement on les traînera comme de faibles brebis, Certainement on ravagera leur demeure.

46 Au bruit de la prise de Babylone la terre tremble, Et un cri se fait entendre parmi les nations.

1 Parola che l’Eterno pronunziò riguardo a Babilonia, riguardo al paese de’ Caldei, per mezzo del profeta Geremia:

2 Annunziatelo fra le nazioni, proclamatelo, issate una bandiera, proclamatelo, non lo celate! Dite: Babilonia è presa! Bel è coperto d’onta, Merodac è infranto! le sue immagini son coperte d’onta; i suoi idoli, infranti!"

3 Poiché dal settentrione sale contro di lei una nazione che ne ridurrà il paese in un deserto, e non vi sarà iù alcuno che abiti in lei; uomini e bestie fuggiranno, se n’andranno.

4 In que’ giorni, in quel tempo, dice l’Eterno, i figliuoli d’Israele e i figliuoli di Giuda torneranno assieme; cammineranno piangendo, e cercheranno l’Eterno, il loro Dio.

5 Domanderanno qual è la via di Sion, volgeranno le loro facce in direzione d’essa, e diranno: "Venite, unitevi all’Eterno con un patto eterno, che non si dimentichi più!"

6 Il mio popolo era un gregge di pecore smarrite; i loro pastori le aveano sviate, sui monti dell’infedeltà; sse andavano di monte in colle, avean dimenticato il luogo del loro riposo.

7 Tutti quelli che le trovavano, le divoravano; e i loro nemici dicevano: "Noi non siamo colpevoli, poich’essi han peccato contro l’Eterno, dimora della giustizia, contro l’Eterno, speranza de’ loro padri".

8 Fuggite di mezzo a Babilonia, uscite dal paese de’ Caldei, e siate come de’ capri davanti al gregge!

9 Poiché, ecco, io suscito e fo salire contro Babilonia un’adunata di grandi nazioni dal paese del settentrione, ed esse si schiereranno contro di lei; e da quel lato sarà presa. Le loro frecce son come quelle d’un valente arciere; nessuna d’esse ritorna a vuoto.

10 E la Caldea sarà depredata; tutti quelli che la prederanno saranno saziati, dice l’Eterno.

11 Sì, gioite, sì, rallegratevi, o voi che avete saccheggiato la mia eredità, sì, saltate come una giovenca che trebbia il grano, nitrite come forti destrieri!

12 La madre vostra è tutta coperta d’onta, colei che v’ha partoriti, arrossisce; ecco, essa è l’ultima delle nazioni, un deserto, una terra arida, una solitudine.

13 A motivo dell’ira dell’Eterno non sarà più abitata, sarà una completa solitudine; chiunque passerà presso a Babilonia rimarrà stupito, e fischierà per tutte le sue piaghe.

14 Schieratevi contro Babilonia d’ogn’intorno, o voi tutti che tirate d’arco! Tirate contro di lei, non risparmiate le frecce! poich’essa ha peccato contro l’Eterno.

15 Levate contro di lei il grido di guerra, d’ogn’intorno; ella si arrende; le sue colonne cadono, le sue mura crollano, perché questa è la vendetta dell’Eterno! Vendicatevi di lei! Fate a lei com’essa ha fatto!

16 Sterminate da Babilonia colui che semina, e colui che maneggia la falce al tempo della mèsse. Per scampare alla spada micidiale ritorni ciascuno al suo popolo, fugga ciascuno verso il proprio paese!

17 Israele è una pecora smarrita, a cui de’ leoni han dato la caccia; il re d’Assiria, pel primo, l’ha divorata; e quest’ultimo, Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, le ha frantumate le ossa.

18 Perciò così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io punirò il re di Babilonia e il suo paese, come ho punito il re d’Assiria.

19 E ricondurrò Israele ai suoi pascoli; egli pasturerà al Carmel e in Basan, e l’anima sua si sazierà sui colli d’Efraim e in Galaad.

20 In quei giorni, in quel tempo, dice l’Eterno, si cercherà l’iniquità d’Israele, ma essa non sarà più, e i peccati di Giuda, ma non si troveranno; poiché io perdonerò a quelli che avrò lasciati di resto.

21 Sali contro il paese di Merathaim e contro gli abitanti di Pekod! Inseguili colla spada, votali allo sterminio, dice l’Eterno, e fa’ esattamente come io t’ho comandato!

22 S’ode nel paese un grido di guerra, e grande è il disastro.

23 Come mai s’è rotto, s’è spezzato il martello di tutta la terra? Come mai Babilonia è divenuta una desolazione fra le nazioni?

24 Io t’ho teso un laccio, e tu, o Babilonia, vi sei stata presa, senza che te n’accorgessi; sei stata trovata, ed arrestata, perché ti sei messa in guerra contro l’Eterno.

25 L’Eterno ha aperto la sua armeria, e ha tratto fuori le armi della sua indignazione; poiché questa è un’opera che il Signore, l’Eterno degli eserciti, ha da compiere nel paese de’ Caldei.

26 Venite contro a lei da tutte le parti, aprite i suoi granai, ammucchiatela come tante mannelle, votatela allo sterminio, che nulla ne resti!

27 Uccidete tutti i suoi tori, fateli scendere al macello! Guai a loro! poiché il loro giorno è giunto, il giorno della loro visitazione.

28 S’ode la voce di quelli che fuggono, che scampano dal paese di Babilonia per annunziare in Sion la vendetta dell’Eterno, del nostro Dio, la vendetta del suo tempio.

29 Convocate contro Babilonia gli arcieri, tutti quelli che tirano d’arco; accampatevi contro a lei d’ogn’intorno, nessuno ne scampi; rendetele secondo le sue opere, fate interamente a lei com’ella ha atto; poich’ella è stata arrogante contro l’Eterno, contro il Santo d’Israele.

30 Perciò i suoi giovani cadranno nelle sue piazze, e tutti i suoi uomini di guerra periranno in quel giorno, dice l’Eterno.

31 Eccomi a te, o arrogante, dice il Signore, l’Eterno degli eserciti; poiché il tuo giorno è giunto, il tempo ch’io ti visiterò.

32 L’arrogante vacillerà, cadrà, e non vi sarà chi lo rialzi; e io appiccherò il fuoco alle sue città, ed esso divorerà tutti i suoi dintorni.

33 Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: I figliuoli d’Israele e i figliuoli di Giuda sono oppressi insieme; tutti quelli che li han menati in cattività li tengono, e rifiutano di lasciarli andare.

34 Il loro vindice è forte; ha nome l’Eterno degli eserciti; certo egli difenderà la loro causa, dando requie alla terra e gettando lo scompiglio fra gli abitanti di Babilonia.

35 La spada sovrasta ai Caldei, dice l’Eterno, agli abitanti di Babilonia, ai suoi capi, ai suoi savi.

36 La spada sovrasta ai millantatori, che risulteranno insensati; la spada sovrasta ai suoi prodi, che saranno atterriti;

37 la spada sovrasta ai suoi cavalli, ai suoi carri, a tutta l’accozzaglia di gente ch’è in mezzo a lei, la quale diventerà come tante donne; la spada sovrasta ai suoi tesori, che saran saccheggiati.

38 La siccità sovrasta alle sue acque, che saran prosciugate, poiché è un paese d’immagini scolpite, vanno in delirio per quegli spauracchi dei loro idoli.

39 Perciò gli animali del deserto con gli sciacalli si stabiliranno quivi, e vi si stabiliranno gli struzzi; essuno vi dimorerà più in perpetuo, non sarà più abitata d’età in età.

40 Come avvenne quando Dio sovvertì Sodoma, Gomorra, e le città loro vicine, dice l’Eterno, nessuno più abiterà quivi, non vi dimorerà più alcun figliuol d’uomo.

41 Ecco, un popolo viene dal settentrione; una grande nazione e molti re sorgono dalle estremità della terra.

42 Essi impugnano l’arco ed il dardo; son crudeli, non hanno pietà; la loro voce è come il muggito del mare; montan cavalli; son pronti a combattere come un solo guerriero, contro di te, o figliuola di Babilonia!

43 Il re di Babilonia n’ode la fama, e le sue mani s’illanguidiscono; l’angoscia lo coglie, un dolore come di donna che partorisce.

44 Ecco, egli sale come un leone dalle rive lussureggianti del Giordano contro la forte dimora; io ne farò fuggire ad un tratto gli abitanti e stabilirò su di essa colui che io ho scelto. Poiché chi è simile a me? chi m’ordinerà di comparire in giudizio? Qual è il pastore che possa starmi a fronte?

45 Perciò, ascoltate il disegno che l’Eterno ha concepito contro Babilonia, e i pensieri che medita contro il paese de’ Caldei! Certo, saran trascinati via come i più piccoli del gregge, certo, la loro dimora sarà devastata.

46 Al rumore della presa di Babilonia trema la terra, e se n’ode il grido fra le nazioni.
