1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. 4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. 7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining. 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire. 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn. 14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses. 16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same; 17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them. 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

1 Jabin, roi de Hatsor, ayant appris ces choses, envoya des messagers à Jobab, roi de Madon, au roi de Schimron, au roi d'Acschaph,

2 aux rois qui étaient au nord dans la montagne, dans la plaine au midi de Kinnéreth, dans la vallée, et sur les hauteurs de Dor à l'occident,

3 aux Cananéens de l'orient et de l'occident, aux Amoréens, aux Héthiens, aux Phéréziens, aux Jébusiens dans la montagne, et aux Héviens au pied de l'Hermon dans le pays de Mitspa.

4 Ils sortirent, eux et toutes leurs armées avec eux, formant un peuple innombrable comme le sable qui est sur le bord de la mer, et ayant des chevaux et des chars en très grande quantité.

5 Tous ces rois fixèrent un lieu de réunion, et vinrent camper ensemble près des eaux de Mérom, pour combattre contre Israël.

6 L'Eternel dit à Josué: Ne les crains point, car demain, à ce moment-ci, je les livrerai tous frappés devant Israël. Tu couperas les jarrets à leurs chevaux, et tu brûleras au feu leurs chars.

7 Josué, avec tous ses gens de guerre, arriva subitement sur eux près des eaux de Mérom, et ils se précipitèrent au milieu d'eux.

8 L'Eternel les livra entre les mains d'Israël; ils les battirent et les poursuivirent jusqu'à Sidon la grande, jusqu'à Misrephoth-Maïm, et jusqu'à la vallée de Mitspa vers l'orient; ils les battirent, sans en laisser échapper aucun.

9 Josué les traita comme l'Eternel lui avait dit; il coupa les jarrets à leurs chevaux, et il brûla leurs chars au feu.

10 A son retour, et dans le même temps, Josué prit Hatsor, et frappa son roi avec l'épée: Hatsor était autrefois la principale ville de tous ces royaumes.

11 On frappa du tranchant de l'épée et l'on dévoua par interdit tous ceux qui s'y trouvaient, il ne resta rien de ce qui respirait, et l'on mit le feu à Hatsor.

12 Josué prit aussi toutes les villes de ces rois et tous leurs rois, et il les frappa du tranchant de l'épée, et il les dévoua par interdit, comme l'avait ordonné Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel.

13 Mais Israël ne brûla aucune des villes situées sur des collines, à l'exception seulement de Hatsor, qui fut brûlée par Josué.

14 Les enfants d'Israël gardèrent pour eux tout le butin de ces villes et le bétail; mais ils frappèrent du tranchant de l'épée tous les hommes, jusqu'à ce qu'ils les eussent détruits, sans rien laisser de ce qui respirait.

15 Josué exécuta les ordres de l'Eternel à Moïse, son serviteur, et de Moïse à Josué; il ne négligea rien de tout ce que l'Eternel avait ordonné à Moïse.

16 C'est ainsi que Josué s'empara de tout ce pays, de la montagne, de tout le midi, de tout le pays de Gosen, de la vallée, de la plaine, de la montagne d'Israël et de ses vallées,

17 depuis la montagne nue qui s'élève vers Séir jusqu'à Baal-Gad, dans la vallée du Liban, au pied de la montagne d'Hermon. Il prit tous leurs rois, les frappa et les fit mourir.

18 La guerre que soutint Josué contre tous ces rois fut de longue durée.

19 Il n'y eut aucune ville qui fît la paix avec les enfants d'Israël, excepté Gabaon, habitée par les Héviens; ils les prirent toutes en combattant.

20 Car l'Eternel permit que ces peuples s'obstinassent à faire la guerre contre Israël, afin qu'Israël les dévouât par interdit, sans qu'il y eût pour eux de miséricorde, et qu'il les détruisît, comme l'Eternel l'avait ordonné à Moïse.

21 Dans le même temps, Josué se mit en marche, et il extermina les Anakim de la montagne d'Hébron, de Debir, d'Anab, de toute la montagne de Juda et de toute la montagne d'Israël; Josué les dévoua par interdit, avec leurs villes.

22 Il ne resta point d'Anakim dans le pays des enfants d'Israël; il n'en resta qu'à Gaza, à Gath et à Asdod.

23 Josué s'empara donc de tout le pays, selon tout ce que l'Eternel avait dit à Moïse. Et Josué le donna en héritage à Israël, à chacun sa portion, d'après leurs tribus. Puis, le pays fut en repos et sans guerre.

3 ai Cananei d’oriente e di ponente, agli Amorei, agli Hittei, ai Ferezei, ai Gebusei nella contrada montuosa, agli Hivvei appiè dello Hermon nel paese di Mitspa.

4 E quelli uscirono, con tutti i loro eserciti, formando un popolo innumerevole come la rena ch’è sul lido del mare, e con cavalli e carri in grandissima quantità.

5 Tutti questi re si riunirono e vennero ad accamparsi assieme presso le acque di Merom per combattere contro Israele.

6 E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: "Non li temere, perché domani, a quest’ora, io farò che saran tutti uccisi davanti a Israele; tu taglierai i garetti ai loro cavalli e darai fuoco ai loro carri".

7 Giosuè dunque, con tutta la sua gente di guerra, marciò all’improvviso contro di essi alle acque di erom, e piombò loro addosso;

8 e l’Eterno li diede nelle mani degl’Israeliti, i quali li batterono e l’inseguirono fino a Sidone la grande, fino a Misrefot-Maim e fino alla valle di Mitspa, verso oriente; li batteron così da non lasciarne scampare uno.

9 E Giosuè li tratto come gli avea detto l’Eterno: tagliò i garetti ai loro cavalli e dette fuoco ai loro carri.

10 Al suo ritorno, e in quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè prese Hatsor e ne fece perire di spada il re; poiché atsor era stata per l’addietro la capitale di tutti quei regni.

11 Mise anche a fil di spada tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, votandole allo sterminio; non vi restò anima viva, e dette Hatsor alle fiamme.

12 Giosuè prese pure tutte le città di quei re e tutti i loro re, e li mise a fil di spada e li votò allo sterminio, come aveva ordinato Mosè, servo dell’Eterno.

13 Ma Israele non arse alcuna delle città poste in collina, salvo Hatsor, la sola che Giosuè incendiasse.

14 E i figliuoli d’Israele si tennero per sé tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame, ma misero a fil di spada tutti gli uomini fino al loro completo sterminio, senza lasciare anima viva.

15 Come l’Eterno avea comandato a Mosè suo servo, così Mosè ordinò a Giosuè, e così fece Giosuè, il quale non trascurò alcuno degli ordini che l’Eterno avea dato a Mosè.

16 Giosuè dunque prese tutto quel paese, la contrada montuosa, tutto il mezzogiorno, tutto il paese di oscen, la regione bassa, la pianura, la contrada montuosa d’Israele e le sue regioni basse,

17 dalla montagna brulla che s’eleva verso Seir, fino a Baal-Gad nella valle del Libano appiè del monte ermon; prese tutti i loro re, li colpì e li mise a morte.

18 Giosuè fece per lungo tempo guerra a tutti quei re.

19 Non ci fu città che facesse pace coi figliuoli d’Israele, eccetto gli Hivvei che abitavano Gabaon; le presero tutte, combattendo;

20 perché l’Eterno facea sì che il loro cuore si ostinasse a dar battaglia ad Israele, onde Israele li votasse allo sterminio senza che ci fosse pietà per loro, e li distruggesse come l’Eterno avea comandato a Mosè.

21 In quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè si mise in marcia e sterminò gli Anakiti della contrada montuosa, di Hebron, di Debir, di Anab, di tutta la contrada montuosa di Giuda e di tutta la contrada montuosa d’Israele; Giosuè li votò allo sterminio con le loro città.

22 Non rimasero più Anakiti nel paese de’ figliuoli d’Israele; non ne restarono che alcuni in Gaza, in Gath in Asdod.

23 Giosuè dunque prese tutto il paese, esattamente come l’Eterno avea detto a Mosè; e Giosuè lo diede in eredità a Israele, tribù per tribù, secondo la parte che toccava a ciascuna. E il paese ebbe requie dalla guerra.
