1 The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses: 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. 6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

7 And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah. 8 And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

1 L'Eternel parla à Josué, et dit:

2 Parle aux enfants d'Israël, et dis: Etablissez-vous, comme je vous l'ai ordonné par Moïse, des villes de refuge,

3 où pourra s'enfuir le meurtrier qui aura tué quelqu'un involontairement, sans intention; elles vous serviront de refuge contre le vengeur du sang.

4 Le meurtrier s'enfuira vers l'une de ces villes, s'arrêtera à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, et exposera son cas aux anciens de cette ville; ils le recueilleront auprès d'eux dans la ville, et lui donneront une demeure, afin qu'il habite avec eux.

5 Si le vengeur du sang le poursuit, ils ne livreront point le meurtrier entre ses mains; car c'est sans le vouloir qu'il a tué son prochain, et sans avoir été auparavant son ennemi.

6 Il restera dans cette ville jusqu'à ce qu'il ait comparu devant l'assemblée pour être jugé, jusqu'à la mort du souverain sacrificateur alors en fonctions. A cette époque, le meurtrier s'en retournera et rentrera dans sa ville et dans sa maison, dans la ville d'où il s'était enfui.

7 Ils consacrèrent Kédesch, en Galilée, dans la montagne de Nephthali; Sichem, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm; et Kirjath-Arba, qui est Hébron, dans la montagne de Juda.

8 Et de l'autre côté du Jourdain, à l'orient de Jéricho, ils choisirent Betser, dans le désert, dans la plaine, dans la tribu de Ruben; Ramoth, en Galaad, dans la tribu de Gad; et Golan, en Basan, dans la tribu de Manassé.

9 Telles furent les villes désignées pour tous les enfants d'Israël et pour l'étranger en séjour au milieu d'eux, afin que celui qui aurait tué quelqu'un involontairement pût s'y réfugier, et qu'il ne mourût pas de la main du vengeur du sang avant d'avoir comparu devant l'assemblée.

1 Poi l’Eterno parlò a Giosuè, dicendo: "Parla ai figliuoli d’Israele e di’ loro:

2 Stabilitevi le città di rifugio, delle quali vi parlai per mezzo di Mosè,

3 affinché l’omicida che avrà ucciso qualcuno senza averne l’intenzione, possa ricoverarvisi; esse vi serviranno di rifugio contro il vindice del sangue.

4 L’omicida si ricovererà in una di quelle città; e, fermatosi all’ingresso della porta della città, esporrà il suo caso agli anziani di quella città; questi lo accoglieranno presso di loro dentro la città, gli daranno una dimora, ed egli si stabilirà fra loro.

5 E se il vindice del sangue lo inseguirà, essi non gli daranno nelle mani l’omicida, poiché ha ucciso il prossimo senza averne l’intenzione, senza averlo odiato prima.

6 L’omicida rimarrà in quella città finché, alla morte del sommo sacerdote che sarà in funzione in quei giorni, comparisca in giudizio davanti alla raunanza. Allora l’omicida potrà tornarsene, e rientrare nella sua città e nella sua casa, nella città donde era fuggito".

7 Essi dunque consacrarono Kedes in Galilea nella contrada montuosa di Neftali, Sichem nella contrada montuosa di Efraim e Kiriath-Arba, che Hebron, nella contrada montuosa di Giuda.

8 E di là dal Giordano, a oriente di Gerico, stabilirono, nella tribù di Ruben, Betser, nel deserto, nell’altipiano; Ramoth, in Galaad, nella tribù di Gad, e Golan in Basan, nella tribù di Manasse.

9 Queste furono le città assegnate a tutti i figliuoli d’Israele e allo straniero dimorante fra loro, affinché chiunque avesse ucciso qualcuno involontariamente potesse rifugiarvisi e non avesse a morire per man del vindice del sangue, prima d’esser comparso davanti alla raunanza.
