1 In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel. 2 And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there. 3 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here? 4 And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest. 5 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous. 6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man. 8 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye? 9 And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land. 10 When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.

11 And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war. 12 And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim. 13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

14 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do. 15 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him. 16 And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate. 17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war. 18 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye? 19 And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel? 20 And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people. 21 So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

22 And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan. 23 And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company? 24 And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee? 25 And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household. 26 And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

27 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire. 28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein. 29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

30 And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. 31 And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

1 En ce temps-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël; et la tribu des Danites se cherchait une possession pour s'établir, car jusqu'à ce jour il ne lui était point échu d'héritage au milieu des tribus d'Israël.

2 Les fils de Dan prirent sur eux tous, parmi leurs familles, cinq hommes vaillants, qu'ils envoyèrent de Tsorea et d'Eschthaol, pour explorer le pays et pour l'examiner. Ils leur dirent: Allez, examinez le pays. Ils arrivèrent dans la montagne d'Ephraïm jusqu'à la maison de Mica, et ils y passèrent la nuit.

3 Comme ils étaient près de la maison de Mica, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune Lévite, s'approchèrent et lui dirent: Qui t'a amené ici? que fais-tu dans ce lieu? et qu'as-tu ici?

4 Il leur répondit: Mica fait pour moi telle et telle chose, il me donne un salaire, et je lui sers de prêtre.

5 Ils lui dirent: Consulte Dieu, afin que nous sachions si notre voyage aura du succès.

6 Et le prêtre leur répondit: Allez en paix; le voyage que vous faites est sous le regard de l'Eternel.

7 Les cinq hommes partirent, et ils arrivèrent à Laïs. Ils virent le peuple qui y était vivant en sécurité à la manière des Sidoniens, tranquille et sans inquiétude; il n'y avait dans le pays personne qui leur fît le moindre outrage en dominant sur eux; ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens, et ils n'avaient pas de liaison avec d'autres hommes.

8 Ils revinrent auprès de leurs frères à Tsorea et Eschthaol, et leurs frères leur dirent: Quelle nouvelle apportez-vous?

9 Allons! répondirent-ils, montons contre eux; car nous avons vu le pays, et voici, il est très bon. Quoi! vous restez sans rien dire! Ne soyez point paresseux à vous mettre en marche pour aller prendre possession de ce pays.

10 Quand vous y entrerez, vous arriverez vers un peuple en sécurité. Le pays est vaste, et Dieu l'a livré entre vos mains; c'est un lieu où rien ne manque de tout ce qui est sur la terre.

11 Six cents hommes de la famille de Dan partirent de Tsorea et d'Eschthaol, munis de leurs armes de guerre.

12 Ils montèrent, et campèrent à Kirjath-Jearim en Juda; c'est pourquoi ce lieu, qui est derrière Kirjath-Jearim, a été appelé jusqu'à ce jour Machané-Dan.

13 Ils passèrent de là dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, et ils arrivèrent jusqu'à la maison de Mica.

14 Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays de Laïs prirent la parole et dirent à leurs frères: Savez-vous qu'il y a dans ces maisons-là un éphod, des théraphim, une image taillée et une image en fonte? Voyez maintenant ce que vous avez à faire.

15 Ils s'approchèrent de là, entrèrent dans la maison du jeune Lévite, dans la maison de Mica, et lui demandèrent comment il se portait.

16 Les six cents hommes d'entre les fils de Dan, munis de leurs armes de guerre, se tenaient à l'entrée de la porte.

17 Et les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour explorer le pays montèrent et entrèrent dans la maison; ils prirent l'image taillée, l'éphod, les théraphim, et l'image en fonte, pendant que le prêtre était à l'entrée de la porte avec les six cents hommes munis de leurs armes de guerre.

18 Lorsqu'ils furent entrés dans la maison de Mica, et qu'ils eurent pris l'image taillée, l'éphod, les théraphim, et l'image en fonte, le prêtre leur dit: Que faites-vous?

19 Ils lui répondirent: Tais-toi, mets ta main sur ta bouche, et viens avec nous; tu nous serviras de père et de prêtre. Vaut-il mieux que tu serves de prêtre à la maison d'un seul homme, ou que tu serves de prêtre à une tribu et à une famille en Israël?

20 Le prêtre éprouva de la joie dans son coeur; il prit l'éphod, les théraphim, et l'image taillée, et se joignit à la troupe.

21 Ils se remirent en route et partirent, en plaçant devant eux les enfants, le bétail et les bagages.

22 Comme ils étaient déjà loin de la maison de Mica, les gens qui habitaient les maisons voisines de celle de Mica se rassemblèrent et poursuivirent les fils de Dan.

23 Ils appelèrent les fils de Dan, qui se retournèrent et dirent à Mica: Qu'as-tu, et que signifie ce rassemblement?

24 Il répondit: Mes dieux que j'avais faits, vous les avez enlevés avec le prêtre et vous êtes partis: que me reste-t-il? Comment donc pouvez-vous me dire: Qu'as-tu?

25 Les fils de Dan lui dirent: Ne fais pas entendre ta voix près de nous; sinon des hommes irrités se jetteront sur vous, et tu causeras ta perte et celle de ta maison.

26 Et les fils de Dan continuèrent leur route. Mica, voyant qu'ils étaient plus forts que lui, s'en retourna et revint dans sa maison.

27 Ils enlevèrent ainsi ce qu'avait fait Mica et emmenèrent le prêtre qui était à son service, et ils tombèrent sur Laïs, sur un peuple tranquille et en sécurité; ils le passèrent au fil de l'épée, et ils brûlèrent la ville.

28 Personne ne la délivra, car elle était éloignée de Sidon, et ses habitants n'avaient pas de liaison avec d'autres hommes: elle était dans la vallée qui s'étend vers Beth-Rehob. Les fils de Dan rebâtirent la ville, et y habitèrent;

29 ils l'appelèrent Dan, d'après le nom de Dan, leur père, qui était né à Israël; mais la ville s'appelait auparavant Laïs.

30 Ils dressèrent pour eux l'image taillée; et Jonathan, fils de Guerschom, fils de Manassé, lui et ses fils, furent prêtres pour la tribu des Danites, jusqu'à l'époque de la captivité du pays.

31 Ils établirent pour eux l'image taillée qu'avait faite Mica, pendant tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.

1 In quel tempo, non v’era re in Israele; e in quel medesimo tempo, la tribù dei Daniti cercava un possesso per stabilirvisi, perché fino a quei giorni, non le era toccata alcuna eredità fra le tribù d’Israele.

2 I figliuoli di Dan mandaron dunque da Tsorea e da Eshtaol cinque uomini della loro tribù, presi di fra loro tutti, uomini valorosi, per esplorare ed esaminare il paese; e dissero loro: "Andate a esaminare il paese!" Quelli giunsero nella contrada montuosa di Efraim, alla casa di Mica, e pernottarono in quel luogo.

3 Come furon presso alla casa di Mica, riconobbero la voce del giovine Levita; e, avvicinatisi, gli chiesero: "Chi t’ha condotto qua? che fai in questo luogo? che hai tu qui?"

4 Egli rispose loro: "Mica mi ha fatto questo e questo: mi stipendia, e io gli servo da sacerdote".

5 E quelli gli dissero: "Deh, consulta Iddio, affinché sappiamo se il viaggio che abbiamo intrapreso sarà prospero".

6 Il sacerdote rispose loro: "Andate in pace; il viaggio che fate è sotto lo sguardo dell’Eterno".

7 I cinque uomini dunque partirono, giunsero a Lais, e videro che il popolo, Il quale vi abitava, viveva in sicurtà, al modo de’ Sidonii, tranquillo e fidente, poiché nel paese non c’era alcuno in autorità che otesse far loro il menomo torto, ed erano lontani dai Sidonii e non aveano relazione con alcuno.

8 Poi tornarono ai loro fratelli a Tsorea ed a Eshtaol; e i fratelli chiesero loro: "Che dite?"

9 Quelli risposero: "Leviamoci e saliamo contro quella gente; poiché abbiam visto il paese, ed ecco, è eccellente. E voi ve ne state là senza dir verbo? Non siate pigri a muovervi per andare a prender possesso del paese!

10 Quando arriverete là troverete un popolo che se ne sta sicuro. Il paese è vasto, e Dio ve lo ha dato nelle mani: è un luogo dove non manca nulla di ciò che è sulla terra".

11 E seicento uomini della famiglia dei Daniti partirono da Tsorea e da Eshtaol, muniti d’armi.

12 Salirono, e si accamparono a Kiriath-Jearim, in Giuda; perciò quel luogo, che è dietro a iriath-Jearim, fu chiamato e si chiama anche oggi Mahané-Dan.

13 E di là passarono nella contrada montuosa di Efraim, e giunsero alla casa di Mica.

14 Allora cinque uomini ch’erano andati ad esplorare il paese di Lais, presero a dire ai loro fratelli: Sapete voi che in queste case c’è un efod, ci son degl’idoli, un’immagine scolpita e un’immagine di getto? Considerate ora quel che dovete fare".

15 Quelli si diressero da quella parte, giunsero alla casa del giovane Levita, alla casa di Mica, e gli chiesero notizie del suo bene stare.

16 I seicento uomini de’ figliuoli di Dan, muniti delle loro armi, si misero davanti alla porta.

17 Ma i cinque uomini ch’erano andati ad esplorare il paese, salirono, entrarono in casa, presero l’immagine scolpita, l’efod, gl’idoli e l’immagine di getto, mentre il sacerdote stava davanti alla porta coi seicento uomini armati.

18 E quando furono entrati in casa di Mica ed ebbero preso l’immagine scolpita, l’efod, gl’idoli e l’immagine di getto, il sacerdote disse loro: "Che fate?"

19 Quelli gli risposero: "Taci, mettiti la mano sulla bocca, vieni con noi, e sarai per noi un padre e un sacerdote. Che è meglio per te, esser sacerdote in casa d’un uomo solo, ovvero esser sacerdote di una tribù e d’una famiglia in Israele?"

20 Il sacerdote si rallegrò in cuor suo; prese l’efod, gl’idoli e l’immagine scolpita, e s’unì a quella gente.

21 Così si rimisero in cammino, mettendo innanzi a loro i bambini, il bestiame e i bagagli.

22 Com’erano già lungi dalla casa di Mica, la gente che abitava nelle case vicine a quella di Mica, si radunò e inseguì i figliuoli di Dan.

23 E siccome gridava dietro ai figliuoli di Dan, questi, rivoltatisi indietro, dissero a Mica: "Che cosa hai, che hai radunata cotesta gente?"

24 Egli rispose: "Avete portato via gli dèi che m’ero fatti e il sacerdote, e ve ne siete andati. Or che mi esta egli più? Come potete dunque dirmi: Che hai?"

25 I figliuoli di Dan gli dissero: "Fa’ che non s’oda la tua voce dietro a noi, perché degli uomini irritati potrebbero scagliarsi su voi, e tu ci perderesti la vita tua e quella della tua famiglia!"

26 I figliuoli di Dan continuarono il loro viaggio; e Mica, vedendo ch’essi eran più forti di lui se ne tornò indietro e venne a casa sua.

27 Ed essi, dopo aver preso le cose che Mica avea fatte e il sacerdote che aveva al suo servizio, giunsero a Lais, a un popolo che se ne stava tranquillo e in sicurtà; lo passarono a fil di spada, e dettero la città alle fiamme.

28 E non ci fu alcuno che la liberasse, perch’era lontana da Sidon, e i suoi abitanti non avean relazioni con altra gente. Essa era nella valle che si estende verso Beth-Rehob.

29 Poi i Daniti ricostruirono la città e l’abitarono. E le posero nome Dan, dal nome di Dan loro padre, che fu figliuolo d’Israele; ma prima, il nome della città era Lais.

30 Poi i figliuoli di Dan rizzarono per sé l’immagine scolpita; e Gionathan, figliuolo di Ghershom, figliuolo di Mosè, e i suoi figliuoli furono sacerdoti della tribù dei Daniti fino al giorno in cui gli abitanti del paese furon deportati.

31 Così rizzarono par se l’immagine scolpita che Mica avea fatta, durante tutto il tempo che la casa di Dio rimase a Sciloh.
