1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. 2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.

6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: 12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. 13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so. 18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; 21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

1 Un envoyé de l'Eternel monta de Guilgal à Bokim, et dit: Je vous ai fait monter hors d'Egypte, et je vous ai amenés dans le pays que j'ai juré à vos pères de vous donner. J'ai dit: Jamais je ne romprai mon alliance avec vous;

2 et vous, vous ne traiterez point alliance avec les habitants de ce pays, vous renverserez leurs autels. Mais vous n'avez point obéi à ma voix. Pourquoi avez-vous fait cela?

3 J'ai dit alors: Je ne les chasserai point devant vous; mais ils seront à vos côtés, et leurs dieux vous seront un piège.

4 Lorsque l'envoyé de l'Eternel eut dit ces paroles à tous les enfants d'Israël, le peuple éleva la voix et pleura.

5 Ils donnèrent à ce lieu le nom de Bokim, et ils y offrirent des sacrifices à l'Eternel.

6 Josué renvoya le peuple, et les enfants d'Israël allèrent chacun dans son héritage pour prendre possession du pays.

7 Le peuple servit l'Eternel pendant toute la vie de Josué, et pendant toute la vie des anciens qui survécurent à Josué et qui avaient vu toutes les grandes choses que l'Eternel avait faites en faveur d'Israël.

8 Josué, fils de Nun, serviteur de l'Eternel, mourut âgé de cent dix ans.

9 On l'ensevelit dans le territoire qu'il avait eu en partage, à Thimnath-Hérès, dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, au nord de la montagne de Gaasch.

10 Toute cette génération fut recueillie auprès de ses pères, et il s'éleva après elle une autre génération, qui ne connaissait point l'Eternel, ni ce qu'il avait fait en faveur d'Israël.

11 Les enfants d'Israël firent alors ce qui déplaît à l'Eternel, et ils servirent les Baals.

12 Ils abandonnèrent l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, qui les avait fait sortir du pays d'Egypte, et ils allèrent après d'autres dieux d'entre les dieux des peuples qui les entouraient; ils se prosternèrent devant eux, et ils irritèrent l'Eternel.

13 Ils abandonnèrent l'Eternel, et ils servirent Baal et les Astartés.

14 La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra entre les mains de pillards qui les pillèrent, il les vendit entre les mains de leurs ennemis d'alentour, et ils ne purent plus résister à leurs ennemis.

15 Partout où ils allaient, la main de l'Eternel était contre eux pour leur faire du mal, comme l'Eternel l'avait dit, comme l'Eternel le leur avait juré. Ils furent ainsi dans une grande détresse.

16 L'Eternel suscita des juges, afin qu'ils les délivrassent de la main de ceux qui les pillaient.

17 Mais ils n'écoutèrent pas même leurs juges, car ils se prostituèrent à d'autres dieux, se prosternèrent devant eux. Ils se détournèrent promptement de la voie qu'avaient suivie leurs pères, et ils n'obéirent point comme eux aux commandements de l'Eternel.

18 Lorsque l'Eternel leur suscitait des juges, l'Eternel était avec le juge, et il les délivrait de la main de leurs ennemis pendant toute la vie du juge; car l'Eternel avait pitié de leurs gémissements contre ceux qui les opprimaient et les tourmentaient.

19 Mais, à la mort du juge, ils se corrompaient de nouveau plus que leurs pères, en allant après d'autres dieux pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, et ils persévéraient dans la même conduite et le même endurcissement.

20 Alors la colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il dit: Puisque cette nation a transgressé mon alliance que j'avais prescrite à ses pères, et puisqu'ils n'ont point obéi à ma voix,

21 je ne chasserai plus devant eux aucune des nations que Josué laissa quand il mourut.

22 C'est ainsi que je mettrai par elles Israël à l'épreuve, pour savoir s'ils prendront garde ou non de suivre la voie de l'Eternel, comme leurs pères y ont pris garde.

23 Et l'Eternel laissa en repos ces nations qu'il n'avait pas livrées entre les mains de Josué, et il ne se hâta point de les chasser.

1 Or l’angelo dell’Eterno salì da Ghilgal a Bokim e disse: "Io vi ho fatto salire dall’Egitto e vi ho condotto nel paese che avevo giurato ai vostri padri di darvi. Avevo anche detto: Io non romperò mai il mio patto con voi;

2 e voi dal canto vostro, non farete alleanza con gli abitanti di questo paese; demolirete i loro altari. Ma voi non avete ubbidito alla mia voce. Perché avete fatto questo?

3 Perciò anch’io ho detto: Io non li caccerò d’innanzi a voi; ma essi saranno per voi tanti nemici, e i loro dèi vi saranno un’insidia".

4 Appena l’angelo dell’Eterno ebbe detto queste parole a tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, il popolo si mise a piangere ad alta voce.

5 E posero nome a quel luogo Bokim e vi offrirono dei sacrifizi all’Eterno.

6 Or Giosuè rimandò il popolo, e i figliuoli d’Israele se ne andarono, ciascuno nel suo territorio, a prender possesso del paese.

7 E il popolo servì all’Eterno durante tutta la vita di Giosuè e durante tutta la vita degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè, e che avean veduto tutte le grandi opere che l’Eterno avea fatte a pro d’Israele.

8 Poi Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, servo dell’Eterno, morì in età di cento dieci anni;

9 e fu sepolto nel territorio che gli era toccato a Timnath-Heres nella contrada montuosa di Efraim, al nord della montagna di Gaash.

10 Anche tutta quella generazione fu riunita ai suoi padri; poi, dopo di quella, sorse un’altra generazione, che non conosceva l’Eterno, né le opere ch’egli avea compiute a pro d’Israele.

11 I figliuoli d’Israele fecero ciò ch’è male agli occhi dell’Eterno, e servirono agl’idoli di Baal;

12 abbandonarono l’Eterno, l’Iddio dei loro padri che li avea tratti dal paese d’Egitto, e andaron dietro ad altri dèi fra gli dèi dei popoli che li attorniavano; si prostrarono dinanzi a loro, e provocarono ad ira l’Eterno;

13 abbandonarono l’Eterno, e servirono a Baal e agl’idoli d’Astarte.

14 E l’ira dell’Eterno s’accese contro Israele ed ei li dette in mano di predoni, che li spogliarono; li vendé ai nemici che stavan loro intorno, in guisa che non poteron più tener fronte ai loro nemici.

15 Dovunque andavano, la mano dell’Eterno era contro di loro a loro danno, come l’Eterno avea detto, come l’Eterno avea loro giurato: e furono oltremodo angustiati.

16 E l’Eterno suscitava dei giudici, che li liberavano dalle mani di quelli che li spogliavano.

17 Ma neppure ai loro giudici davano ascolto, poiché si prostituivano ad altri dèi, e si prostravan dinanzi a loro. E abbandonarono ben presto la via battuta dai loro padri, i quali aveano ubbidito ai comandamenti ell’Eterno; ma essi non fecero così.

18 E quando l’Eterno suscitava loro de’ giudici, l’Eterno era col giudice, e li liberava dalla mano de’ loro nemici durante tutta la vita del giudice; poiché l’Eterno si pentiva a sentire i gemiti che mandavano a motivo di quelli che li opprimevano e li angariavano.

19 Ma, quando il giudice moriva, tornavano a corrompersi più dei loro padri, andando dietro ad altri dèi per servirli e prostrarsi dinanzi a loro; non rinunziavano menomamente alle loro pratiche e alla loro caparbia condotta.

20 Perciò l’ira dell’Eterno si accese contro Israele, ed egli disse: "Giacché questa nazione ha violato il patto che avevo stabilito coi loro padri ed essi non hanno ubbidito alla mia voce,

21 anch’io non caccerò più d’innanzi a loro alcuna delle nazioni che Giosuè lasciò quando morì;

22 così, per mezzo d’esse, metterò alla prova Israele per vedere se si atterranno alla via dell’Eterno e cammineranno per essa come fecero i loro padri, o no".

23 E l’Eterno lasciò stare quelle nazioni senz’affrettarsi a cacciarle, e non le diede nelle mani di Giosuè.
