1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore; 3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel? 4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death. 6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. 7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

8 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. 10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. 13 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them. 14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not. 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

16 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; 21 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty. 23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them. 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

1 Les hommes d'Israël avaient juré à Mitspa, en disant: Aucun de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjamite.

2 Le peuple vint à Béthel, et il y resta devant Dieu jusqu'au soir. Ils élevèrent la voix, ils versèrent d'abondantes larmes,

3 et ils dirent: O Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi est-il arrivé en Israël qu'il manque aujourd'hui une tribu d'Israël?

4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils bâtirent là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices d'actions de grâces.

5 Les enfants d'Israël dirent: Quel est celui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël qui n'est pas monté à l'assemblée devant l'Eternel? Car on avait fait un serment solennel contre quiconque ne monterait pas vers l'Eternel à Mitspa, on avait dit: Il sera puni de mort.

6 Les enfants d'Israël éprouvaient du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, leur frère, et ils disaient: Aujourd'hui une tribu a été retranchée d'Israël.

7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui ont survécu, puisque nous avons juré par l'Eternel de ne pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes?

8 Ils dirent donc: Y a-t-il quelqu'un d'entre les tribus d'Israël qui ne soit pas monté vers l'Eternel à Mitspa? Et voici, personne de Jabès en Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée.

9 On fit le dénombrement du peuple, et il n'y avait là aucun des habitants de Jabès en Galaad.

10 Alors l'assemblée envoya contre eux douze mille soldats, en leur donnant cet ordre: Allez, et frappez du tranchant de l'épée les habitants de Jabès en Galaad, avec les femmes et les enfants.

11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous dévouerez par interdit tout mâle et toute femme qui a connu la couche d'un homme.

12 Ils trouvèrent parmi les habitants de Jabès en Galaad quatre cents jeunes filles vierges qui n'avaient point connu d'homme en couchant avec lui, et ils les amenèrent dans le camp à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan.

13 Toute l'assemblée envoya des messagers pour parler aux fils de Benjamin qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et pour leur annoncer la paix.

14 En ce temps-là, les Benjamites revinrent, et on leur donna les femmes à qui l'on avait laissé la vie parmi les femmes de Jabès en Galaad. Mais il n'y en avait pas assez pour eux.

15 Le peuple éprouvait du repentir au sujet de Benjamin, car l'Eternel avait fait une brèche dans les tribus d'Israël.

16 Les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été détruites?

17 Et ils dirent: Que les réchappés de Benjamin conservent leur héritage, afin qu'une tribu ne soit pas effacée d'Israël.

18 Mais nous ne pouvons pas leur donner de nos filles pour femmes, car les enfants d'Israël ont juré, en disant: Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à un Benjamite!

19 Et ils dirent: Voici, il y a chaque année une fête de l'Eternel à Silo, qui est au nord de Béthel, à l'orient de la route qui monte de Béthel, à Sichem, et au midi de Lebona.

20 Puis ils donnèrent cet ordre aux fils de Benjamin: Allez, et placez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes.

21 Vous regarderez, et voici, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo pour en faire votre femme, et vous vous en irez dans le pays de Benjamin.

22 Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre auprès de nous, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les-nous, car nous n'avons pas pris une femme pour chacun dans la guerre. Ce n'est pas vous qui les leur avez données; en ce cas, vous seriez coupables.

23 Ainsi firent les fils de Benjamin; ils prirent des femmes selon leur nombre parmi les danseuses qu'ils enlevèrent, puis ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage; ils rebâtirent les villes, et y habitèrent.

24 Et dans le même temps les enfants d'Israël s'en allèrent de là chacun dans sa tribu et dans sa famille, ils retournèrent chacun dans son héritage.

25 En ce temps-là, il n'y avait point de roi en Israël. Chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.

2 E il popolo venne a Bethel, dove rimase fino alla sera in presenza di Dio, e alzando la voce, pianse dirottamente, e disse:

3 "O Eterno, o Dio d’Israele, perché mai è avvenuto questo in Israele, che oggi ci sia in Israele una tribù di meno?"

4 Il giorno seguente, il popolo si levò di buon mattino, costruì quivi un altare, e offerse olocausti e sacrifizi di azioni di grazie.

5 E i figliuoli d’Israele dissero: "Chi è, fra tutte le tribù d’Israele che non sia salito alla raunanza davanti all’Eterno?" Poiché avean fatto questo giuramento solenne relativamente a chi non fosse salito in presenza dell’Eterno a Mitspa: "Quel tale dovrà esser messo a morte".

6 I figliuoli d’Israele si pentivano di quel che avean fatto a Beniamino loro fratello, e dicevano: "Oggi è stata soppressa una tribù d’Israele.

7 Come faremo a procurar delle donne ai superstiti, giacché abbiam giurato nel nome dell’Eterno di non dar loro in moglie alcuna delle nostre figliuole?"

8 Dissero dunque: "Qual è fra le tribù d’Israele quella che non e salita in presenza dell’Eterno a Mitspa?" Ed ecco che nessuno di Jabes in Galaad era venuto al campo, alla raunanza;

9 poiché, fatto il censimento del popolo, si trovò che quivi non v’era alcuno degli abitanti di Jabes in alaad.

10 Allora la raunanza mandò là dodicimila uomini dei più valorosi, e diede loro quest’ordine: "Andate, e mettete a fil di spada gli abitanti di Jabes in Galaad, con le donne e i bambini.

11 E farete questo: voterete allo sterminio ogni maschio e ogni donna che abbia avuto relazioni carnali con uomo".

12 E quelli trovarono, fra gli abitanti di Jabes in Galaad, quattrocento fanciulle che non aveano avuto relazioni carnali con uomo, e le menarono al campo, a Sciloh, che è nel paese di Canaan.

13 Tutta la raunanza invio de’ messi per parlare ai figliuoli di Beniamino che erano al masso di Rimmon e per proclamar loro la pace.

14 Allora i Beniaminiti tornarono e furon loro date le donne a cui era stata risparmiata la vita fra le donne di Jabes in Galaad; ma non ve ne fu abbastanza per tutti.

15 Il popolo dunque si pentiva di quel che avea fatto a Beniamino, perché l’Eterno aveva aperta una breccia fra le tribù d’Israele.

16 E gli anziani della raunanza dissero: "Come faremo a procurar delle donne ai superstiti, giacché le donne Beniaminite sono state distrutte?" Poi dissero:

17 "Quelli che sono scampati posseggano ciò che apparteneva a Beniamino, affinché non sia soppressa una tribù in Israele.

18 Ma noi non possiamo dar loro delle nostre figliuole in moglie". Poiché i figliuoli d’Israele avean giurato, dicendo: "Maledetto chi darà una moglie a Beniamino!"

19 E dissero: "Ecco, ogni anno si fa una festa in onore dell’Eterno a Sciloh, ch’è al nord di Bethel, a oriente della strada che sale da Bethel a Sichem, e al mezzogiorno di Lebna".

20 E diedero quest’ordine ai figliuoli di Beniamino: Andate, fate un’imboscata nelle vigne;

21 state attenti, e quando le figliuole di Sciloh usciranno per danzare in coro, sbucherete dalle vigne, rapirete ciascuno una delle figliuole di Sciloh per farne vostra moglie, e ve ne andrete nel paese di Beniamino.

22 E quando i loro padri o i loro fratelli verranno a querelarsi con noi, noi diremo loro: "Datecele, per favore, giacché in questa guerra non abbiam preso una donna per uno; né siete voi che le avete date loro; nel qual caso, voi sareste colpevoli".

23 E i figliuoli di Beniamino fecero a quel modo: si presero delle mogli, secondo il loro numero, fra le danzatrici; le rapirono, poi partirono e tornarono nella loro eredità, riedificarono le città e vi stabilirono la loro dimora.

24 In quel medesimo tempo, i figliuoli d’Israele se ne andarono di là, ciascuno nella sua tribù e nella sua famiglia, e ognuno tornò di là nella sua eredità.

25 In quel tempo, non v’era re in Israele; ognun facea quel che gli pareva meglio.
