1 Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice. 2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. 3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. 4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

9 The LORD’s voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? 11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? 12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. 13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. 14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword. 15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.

16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

1 Ecoutez donc ce que dit l'Eternel: Lève-toi, plaide devant les montagnes, Et que les collines entendent ta voix!...

2 Ecoutez, montagnes, le procès de l'Eternel, Et vous, solides fondements de la terre! Car l'Eternel a un procès avec son peuple, Il veut plaider avec Israël. -

3 Mon peuple, que t'ai-je fait? En quoi t'ai-je fatigué? Réponds-moi!

4 Car je t'ai fait monter du pays d'Egypte, Je t'ai délivré de la maison de servitude, Et j'ai envoyé devant toi Moïse, Aaron et Marie.

5 Mon peuple, rappelle-toi ce que projetait Balak, roi de Moab, Et ce que lui répondit Balaam, fils de Beor, De Sittim à Guilgal, Afin que tu reconnaisses les bienfaits de l'Eternel.

6 Avec quoi me présenterai-je devant l'Eternel, Pour m'humilier devant le Dieu Très-Haut? Me présenterai-je avec des holocaustes, Avec des veaux d'un an?

7 L'Eternel agréera-t-il des milliers de béliers, Des myriades de torrents d'huile? Donnerai-je pour mes transgressions mon premier-né, Pour le péché de mon âme le fruit de mes entrailles? -

8 On t'a fait connaître, ô homme, ce qui est bien; Et ce que l'Eternel demande de toi, C'est que tu pratiques la justice, Que tu aimes la miséricorde, Et que tu marches humblement avec ton Dieu.

9 La voix de l'Eternel crie à la ville, Et celui qui est sage craindra ton nom. Entendez la verge et celui qui l'envoie!

10 Y a-t-il encore dans la maison du méchant Des trésors iniques, Et un épha trop petit, objet de malédiction?

11 Est-on pur avec des balances fausses, Et avec de faux poids dans le sac?

12 Ses riches sont pleins de violence, Ses habitants profèrent le mensonge, Et leur langue n'est que tromperie dans leur bouche.

13 C'est pourquoi je te frapperai par la souffrance, Je te ravagerai à cause de tes péchés.

14 Tu mangeras sans te rassasier, Et la faim sera au dedans de toi; Tu mettras en réserve et tu ne sauveras pas, Et ce que tu sauveras, je le livrerai à l'épée.

15 Tu sèmeras, et tu ne moissonneras pas, Tu presseras l'olive, et tu ne feras pas d'onctions avec l'huile, Tu presseras le moût, et tu ne boiras pas le vin.

16 On observe les coutumes d'Omri Et toute la manière d'agir de la maison d'Achab, Et vous marchez d'après leurs conseils; C'est pourquoi je te livrerai à la destruction, Je ferai de tes habitants un sujet de raillerie, Et vous porterez l'opprobre de mon peuple.

1 Deh, ascoltate ciò che dice l’Eterno: Lèvati, perora davanti a questi monti, e odano i colli la tua voce!

2 Ascoltate, o monti, la causa dell’Eterno, e voi, saldi fondamenti della terra! poiché l’Eterno ha una causa col suo popolo, e vuol discutere con Israele.

3 Popolo mio, che t’ho io fatto? In che t’ho io travagliato? Testimonia pure contro di me!

4 Poiché io ti trassi fuori dal paese d’Egitto, ti redensi dalla casa di schiavitù, mandai davanti a te Mosè, Aaronne e Maria.

5 O popolo mio, ricorda dunque quel che Balak, re di Moab, macchinava, e che cosa gli rispose Balaam, figliuolo di Beor, da Sittim a Ghilgal, affinché tu riconosca il giusto procedere dell’Eterno.

6 "Con che verrò io davanti all’Eterno e m’inchinerò davanti all’Iddio eccelso? Verrò io davanti a lui con degli olocausti, con de’ vitelli d’un anno?

7 L’Eterno gradirà egli le migliaia de’ montoni, le miriadi dei rivi d’olio? Darò il mio primogenito per la mia trasgressione? Il frutto delle mie viscere per il peccato dell’anima mia?"

8 O uomo, egli t’ha fatto conoscere ciò ch’è bene; e che altro richiede da te l’Eterno, se non che tu pratichi ciò ch’è giusto, che tu ami la misericordia, e cammini umilmente col tuo Dio?

9 La voce dell’Eterno grida alla città, (e chi ha senno avrà riguardo al suo nome): Ascoltate la verga, e colui che l’ha fatta venire!

10 Vi son eglino ancora, nella casa dell’empio, dei tesori empiamente acquistati, e l’efa scarso, c’è cosa abominevole?

11 Sarei io puro se tollerassi bilance false e il sacchetto dai pesi frodolenti?

12 Poiché i ricchi della città son pieni di violenza, i suoi abitanti proferiscono menzogne, e la loro lingua non è che frode nella loro bocca.

13 Perciò anch’io ti colpirò, e ti produrrò gravi ferite, ti desolerò a motivo de’ tuoi peccati.

14 Tu mangerai, ma non sarai saziato, e l’inanizione rimarrà dentro di te; porterai via, ma non salverai, e ciò che avrai salvato, lo darò in balìa della spada.

15 Tu seminerai, ma non mieterai; pigerai le ulive, ma non t’ungerai d’olio; spremerai il mosto, ma non berrai il vino.

16 Si osservano con cura gli statuti d’Omri, e tutte le pratiche della casa d’Achab, e voi camminate seguendo i loro consigli, perch’io abbandoni te alla desolazione e i tuoi abitanti ai fischi! E voi porterete l’obbrobrio del mio popolo!
