1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

2 God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. 3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. 5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. 6 Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. 7 The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. 8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.

9 What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. 10 For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry. 11 There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor. 12 Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. 13 For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder. 14 And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile. 15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

2 L'Eternel est un Dieu jaloux, il se venge; L'Eternel se venge, il est plein de fureur; L'Eternel se venge de ses adversaires, Il garde rancune à ses ennemis.

3 L'Eternel est lent à la colère, il est grand par sa force; Il ne laisse pas impuni. L'Eternel marche dans la tempête, dans le tourbillon; Les nuées sont la poussière de ses pieds.

4 Il menace la mer et la dessèche, Il fait tarir tous les fleuves; Le Basan et le Carmel languissent, La fleur du Liban se flétrit.

5 Les montagnes s'ébranlent devant lui, Et les collines se fondent; La terre se soulève devant sa face, Le monde et tous ses habitants.

6 Qui résistera devant sa fureur? Qui tiendra contre son ardente colère? Sa fureur se répand comme le feu, Et les rochers se brisent devant lui.

7 L'Eternel est bon, Il est un refuge au jour de la détresse; Il connaît ceux qui se confient en lui.

8 Mais avec des flots qui déborderont Il détruira la ville, Et il poursuivra ses ennemis jusque dans les ténèbres.

9 Que méditez-vous contre l'Eternel? C'est lui qui détruit. La détresse ne paraîtra pas deux fois.

10 Car entrelacés comme des épines, Et comme ivres de leur vin, Ils seront consumés Comme la paille sèche, entièrement.

11 De toi est sorti Celui qui méditait le mal contre l'Eternel, Celui qui avait de méchants desseins.

12 Ainsi parle l'Eternel: Quoique intacts et nombreux, Ils seront moissonnés et disparaîtront. Je veux t'humilier, Pour ne plus avoir à t'humilier...

13 Je briserai maintenant son joug de dessus toi, Et je romprai tes liens...

14 Voici ce qu'a ordonné sur toi l'Eternel: Tu n'auras plus de descendants qui portent ton nom; J'enlèverai de la maison de ton dieu les images taillées ou en fonte; Je préparerai ton sépulcre, car tu es trop léger.

15 Voici sur les montagnes Les pieds du messager qui annonce la paix! Célèbre tes fêtes, Juda, accomplis tes voeux! Car le méchant ne passera plus au milieu de toi, Il est entièrement exterminé...

2 L’Eterno è un Dio geloso e vendicatore; L’Eterno è vendicatore e pieno di furore; l’Eterno si vendica dei suoi avversari, e serba il cruccio per i suoi nemici.

3 L’Eterno è lento all’ira, è grande in forza, ma non tiene il colpevole per innocente. L’Eterno cammina nel turbine e nella tempesta, e le nuvole son la polvere de’ suoi piedi.

4 Egli sgrida il mare e lo prosciuga, dissecca tutti i fiumi. Basan langue, langue il Carmelo, e langue il fiore del Libano.

5 I monti tremano davanti a lui, si struggono i colli; la terra si solleva alla sua presenza, e il mondo con tutti i suoi abitanti.

6 Chi può reggere davanti alla sua indignazione? Chi può sussistere sotto l’ardore della sua ira? Il suo furore si spande come fuoco, e le scoscendono davanti a lui.

7 L’Eterno è buono; è una fortezza nel giorno della distretta, ed egli conosce quelli che si rifugiano in lui.

8 Ma con una irrompente inondazione egli farà una totale distruzione del luogo ov’è Ninive, e inseguirà i propri nemici fin nelle tenebre.

9 Che meditate voi contro l’Eterno? Egli farà una distruzione totale; la distretta non sorgerà due volte.

10 Poiché fossero pur intrecciati come spine e fradici pel vino ingollato, saran divorati del tutto, come stoppia secca.

11 Da te è uscito colui che ha meditato del male contro l’Eterno, che ha macchinato scelleratezze.

12 Così parla l’Eterno: Anche se in piena forza e numerosi, saranno falciati e scompariranno, e s’io t’ho afflitta non t’affliggerò più.

13 Ora spezzerò il suo giogo d’addosso a te, e infrangerò i tuoi legami.

14 E quanto a te, popolo di Ninive, l’Eterno ha dato quest’ordine: Che non vi sia più posterità del tuo nome; io sterminerò dalla casa delle tue divinità le immagini scolpite e le immagini fuse; io ti preparerò la tomba perché sei divenuto spregevole.

15 Ecco, sui monti, i piedi di colui che reca buone novelle, che annunzia la pace! Celebra le tue feste, o Giuda, sciogli i tuoi voti; poiché lo scellerato non passerà più in mezzo a te; egli è sterminato interamente.
