1 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them. 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3 And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the LORD their God.

4 Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God. 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. 7 Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; 8 And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous: 9 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; 10 And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 11 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12 Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they should go. 13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: 14 And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant: 15 And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them. 16 But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments, 17 And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not. 18 Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations; 19 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go. 20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. 21 Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not. 22 Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan. 23 Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. 24 So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would. 25 And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. 26 Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations. 27 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies, who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies; 29 And testifiedst against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. 30 Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands. 31 Nevertheless for thy great mercies’ sake thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them; for thou art a gracious and merciful God. 32 Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day. 33 Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: 37 And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. 38 And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.

1 Le vingt-quatrième jour du même mois, les enfants d'Israël s'assemblèrent, revêtus de sacs et couverts de poussière, pour la célébration d'un jeûne.

2 Ceux qui étaient de la race d'Israël, s'étant séparés de tous les étrangers, se présentèrent et confessèrent leurs péchés et les iniquités de leurs pères.

3 Lorsqu'ils furent placés, on lut dans le livre de la loi de l'Eternel, leur Dieu, pendant un quart de la journée; et pendant un autre quart ils confessèrent leurs péchés et se prosternèrent devant l'Eternel, leur Dieu.

4 Josué, Bani, Kadmiel, Schebania, Bunni, Schérébia, Bani et Kenani montèrent sur l'estrade des Lévites et crièrent à haute voix vers l'Eternel, leur Dieu.

5 Et les Lévites Josué, Kadmiel, Bani, Haschabnia, Schérébia, Hodija, Schebania et Pethachja, dirent: Levez-vous, bénissez l'Eternel, votre Dieu, d'éternité en éternité! Que l'on bénisse ton nom glorieux, qui est au-dessus de toute bénédiction et de toute louange!

6 C'est toi, Eternel, toi seul, qui as fait les cieux, les cieux des cieux et toute leur armée, la terre et tout ce qui est sur elle, les mers et tout ce qu'elles renferment. Tu donnes la vie à toutes ces choses, et l'armée des cieux se prosterne devant toi.

7 C'est toi, Eternel Dieu, qui as choisi Abram, qui l'as fait sortir d'Ur en Chaldée, et qui lui as donné le nom d'Abraham.

8 Tu trouvas son coeur fidèle devant toi, tu fis alliance avec lui, et tu promis de donner à sa postérité le pays des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Jébusiens et des Guirgasiens. Et tu as tenu ta parole, car tu es juste.

9 Tu vis l'affliction de nos pères en Egypte, et tu entendis leurs cris vers la mer Rouge.

10 Tu opéras des miracles et des prodiges contre Pharaon, contre tous ses serviteurs et contre tout le peuple de son pays, parce que tu savais avec quelle méchanceté ils avaient traité nos pères, et tu fis paraître ta gloire comme elle paraît aujourd'hui.

11 Tu fendis la mer devant eux, et ils passèrent à sec au milieu de la mer; mais tu précipitas dans l'abîme, comme une pierre au fond des eaux, ceux qui marchaient à leur poursuite.

12 Tu les guidas le jour par une colonne de nuée, et la nuit par une colonne de feu qui les éclairait dans le chemin qu'ils avaient à suivre.

13 Tu descendis sur la montagne de Sinaï, tu leur parlas du haut des cieux, et tu leur donnas des ordonnances justes, des lois de vérité, des préceptes et des commandements excellents.

14 Tu leur fis connaître ton saint sabbat, et tu leur prescrivis par Moïse, ton serviteur, des commandements, des préceptes et une loi.

15 Tu leur donnas, du haut des cieux, du pain quand ils avaient faim, et tu fis sortir de l'eau du rocher quand ils avaient soif. Et tu leur dis d'entrer en possession du pays que tu avais juré de leur donner.

16 Mais nos pères se livrèrent à l'orgueil et raidirent leur cou. Ils n'écoutèrent point tes commandements,

17 ils refusèrent d'obéir, et ils mirent en oubli les merveilles que tu avais faites en leur faveur. Ils raidirent leur cou; et, dans leur rébellion, ils se donnèrent un chef pour retourner à leur servitude. Mais toi, tu es un Dieu prêt à pardonner, compatissant et miséricordieux, lent à la colère et riche en bonté, et tu ne les abandonnas pas,

18 même quand ils se firent un veau en fonte et dirent: Voici ton Dieu qui t'a fait sortir d'Egypte, et qu'ils se livrèrent envers toi à de grands outrages.

19 Dans ton immense miséricorde, tu ne les abandonnas pas au désert, et la colonne de nuée ne cessa point de les guider le jour dans leur chemin, ni la colonne de feu de les éclairer la nuit dans le chemin qu'ils avaient à suivre.

20 Tu leur donnas ton bon esprit pour les rendre sages, tu ne refusas point ta manne à leur bouche, et tu leur fournis de l'eau pour leur soif.

21 Pendant quarante ans, tu pourvus à leur entretien dans le désert, et ils ne manquèrent de rien, leurs vêtements ne s'usèrent point, et leurs pieds ne s'enflèrent point.

22 Tu leur livras des royaumes et des peuples, dont tu partageas entre eux les contrées, et ils possédèrent le pays de Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et le pays d'Og, roi de Basan.

23 Tu multiplias leurs fils comme les étoiles des cieux, et tu les fis entrer dans le pays dont tu avais dit à leurs pères qu'ils prendraient possession.

24 Et leurs fils entrèrent et prirent possession du pays; tu humilias devant eux les habitants du pays, les Cananéens, et tu les livras entre leurs mains, avec leurs rois et les peuples du pays, pour qu'ils les traitassent à leur gré.

25 Ils devinrent maîtres de villes fortifiées et de terres fertiles; ils possédèrent des maisons remplies de toutes sortes de biens, des citernes creusées, des vignes, des oliviers, et des arbres fruitiers en abondance; ils mangèrent, ils se rassasièrent, ils s'engraissèrent, et ils vécurent dans les délices par ta grande bonté.

26 Néanmoins, ils se soulevèrent et se révoltèrent contre toi. Ils jetèrent ta loi derrière leur dos, ils tuèrent tes prophètes qui les conjuraient de revenir à toi, et ils se livrèrent envers toi à de grands outrages.

27 Alors tu les abandonnas entre les mains de leurs ennemis, qui les opprimèrent. Mais, au temps de leur détresse, ils crièrent à toi; et toi, tu les entendis du haut des cieux, et, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu leur donnas des libérateurs qui les sauvèrent de la main de leurs ennemis.

28 Quand ils eurent du repos, ils recommencèrent à faire le mal devant toi. Alors tu les abandonnas entre les mains de leurs ennemis, qui les dominèrent. Mais, de nouveau, ils crièrent à toi; et toi, tu les entendis du haut des cieux, et, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu les délivras maintes fois.

29 Tu les conjuras de revenir à ta loi; et ils persévérèrent dans l'orgueil, ils n'écoutèrent point tes commandements, ils péchèrent contre tes ordonnances, qui font vivre celui qui les met en pratique, ils eurent une épaule rebelle, ils raidirent leur cou, et ils n'obéirent point.

30 Tu les supportas de nombreuses années, tu leur donnas des avertissements par ton esprit, par tes prophètes; et ils ne prêtèrent point l'oreille. Alors tu les livras entre les mains des peuples étrangers.

31 Mais, dans ta grande miséricorde, tu ne les anéantis pas, et tu ne les abandonnas pas, car tu es un Dieu compatissant et miséricordieux.

32 Et maintenant, ô notre Dieu, Dieu grand, puissant et redoutable, toi qui gardes ton alliance et qui exerces la miséricorde, ne regarde pas comme peu de chose toutes les souffrances que nous avons éprouvées, nous, nos rois, nos chefs, nos sacrificateurs, nos prophètes, nos pères et tout ton peuple, depuis le temps des rois d'Assyrie jusqu'à ce jour.

33 Tu as été juste dans tout ce qui nous est arrivé, car tu t'es montré fidèle, et nous avons fait le mal.

34 Nos rois, nos chefs, nos sacrificateurs et nos pères n'ont point observé ta loi, et ils n'ont été attentifs ni à tes commandements ni aux avertissements que tu leur adressais.

35 Pendant qu'ils étaient les maîtres, au milieu des bienfaits nombreux que tu leur accordais, dans le pays vaste et fertile que tu leur avais livré, ils ne t'ont point servi et ils ne se sont point détournés de leurs oeuvres mauvaises.

36 Et aujourd'hui, nous voici esclaves! Nous voici esclaves sur la terre que tu as donnée à nos pères, pour qu'ils jouissent de ses fruits et de ses biens!

37 Elle multiplie ses produits pour les rois auxquels tu nous as assujettis, à cause de nos péchés; ils dominent à leur gré sur nos corps et sur notre bétail, et nous sommes dans une grande angoisse!

38 Pour tout cela, nous contractâmes une alliance, que nous mîmes par écrit; et nos chefs, nos Lévites et nos sacrificateurs y apposèrent leur sceau.

1 Or il ventiquattresimo giorno dello stesso mese, i figliuoli d’Israele si radunarono, vestiti di sacco e coperti di terra, per celebrare un digiuno.

2 Quelli che appartenevano alla progenie d’Israele si separarono da tutti gli stranieri, si presentarono dinanzi a Dio, e confessarono i loro peccati e le iniquità dei loro padri.

3 S’alzarono in piè nel posto dove si trovavano, e fu fatta la lettura del libro della legge dell’Eterno, del loro Dio, per un quarto del giorno; e per un altro quarto essi fecero la confessione de’ peccati, e si prostrarono davanti all’Eterno, al loro Dio.

4 Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Scebania, Bunni, Scerebia, Bani e Kenani salirono sulla tribuna dei Leviti e gridarono ad alta voce all’Eterno, al loro Dio.

5 E i Leviti Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneia, Scerebia, Hodia, Scebania e Pethahia dissero: "Levatevi e benedite l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, d’eternità in eternità! Si benedica il nome tuo glorioso, ch’è esaltato al disopra d’ogni benedizione e d’ogni lode!

6 Tu, tu solo sei l’Eterno! tu hai fatto i cieli, i cieli de’ cieli e tutto il loro esercito, la terra e tutto ciò che sta sovr’essa, i mari e tutto ciò ch’è in essi, e tu fai vivere tutte queste cose, e l’esercito de’ cieli t’adora.

7 Tu sei l’Eterno, l’Iddio che scegliesti Abramo, lo traesti fuori da Ur de’ Caldei, e gli desti il nome d’Abrahamo;

8 tu trovasti il cuor suo fedele davanti a te, e fermasti con lui un patto, promettendogli di dare alla sua progenie il paese de’ Cananei, degli Hittei, degli Amorei, de’ Ferezei, de’ Gebusei e de’ Ghirgasei; tu hai mantenuta la tua parola, perché sei giusto.

9 Tu vedesti l’afflizione de’ nostri padri in Egitto e udisti il loro grido presso il mar Rosso;

10 e operasti miracoli e prodigi contro Faraone, contro tutti i suoi servi, contro tutto il popolo del suo paese, perché sapevi ch’essi aveano trattato i nostri padri con prepotenza; e ti facesti un nome com’è quello che hai al dì d’oggi.

11 E fendesti il mare davanti a loro, sì che passarono per mezzo al mare sull’asciutto; e quelli che l’inseguivano tu li precipitasti nell’abisso, come una pietra in fondo ad acque potenti.

12 E li conducesti di giorno con una colonna di nuvola, e di notte con una colonna di fuoco per rischiarar loro la via per la quale dovean camminare.

13 E scendesti sul monte Sinai e parlasti con loro dal cielo e desti loro prescrizioni giuste e leggi di verità, buoni precetti e buoni comandamenti;

14 e facesti loro conoscere il tuo santo sabato, e desti loro comandamenti, precetti e una legge per mezzo di Mosè, tuo servo;

15 e desti loro pane dal cielo quand’erano affamati, e facesti scaturire acqua dalla rupe quand’erano assetati, e dicesti loro che andassero a prender possesso del paese che avevi giurato di dar loro.

16 Ma essi, i nostri padri, si condussero con superbia, indurarono le loro cervici, e non ubbidirono ai tuoi comandamenti;

17 rifiutarono d’ubbidire, e non si ricordarono delle maraviglie che tu avevi fatte a pro loro; indurarono le loro cervici; e, nella loro ribellione, si vollero dare un capo per tornare alla loro schiavitù. Ma tu sei un Dio pronto a perdonare, misericordioso, pieno di compassione, lento all’ira e di gran benignità, e non li abbandonasti.

18 Neppure quando si fecero un vitello di getto e dissero: Ecco il tuo Dio che t’ha tratto fuori dall’Egitto! t’oltraggiarono gravemente,

19 tu nella tua immensa misericordia, non li abbandonasti nel deserto: la colonna di nuvola che stava su loro non cessò di guidarli durante il giorno per il loro cammino, e la colonna di fuoco non cessò di rischiarar loro la via per la quale doveano camminare.

20 E desti loro il tuo buono spirito per istruirli, e non rifiutasti la tua manna alle loro bocche, e desti loro ell’acqua quand’erano assetati.

21 Per quarant’anni li sostentasti nel deserto, e non mancò loro nulla; le loro vesti non si logorarono e i loro piedi non si gonfiarono.

22 E desti loro regni e popoli, e li spartisti fra loro per contrade; ed essi possedettero il paese di Sihon, cioè il paese del re di Heshbon, e il paese di Og re di Bashan.

23 E moltiplicasti i loro figliuoli come le stelle del cielo, e li introducesti nel paese in cui avevi detto ai padri loro che li faresti entrare per possederlo.

24 E i loro figliuoli v’entrarono e presero possesso del paese; tu umiliasti dinanzi a loro i Cananei che abitavano il paese, e li desti nelle loro mani coi loro re e coi popoli del paese, perché li trattassero come loro piaceva.

25 Ed essi s’impadronirono di città fortificate e d’una terra fertile, e possedettero case piene d’ogni bene, cisterne bell’e scavate, vigne, uliveti, alberi fruttiferi in abbondanza, e mangiarono e si saziarono e ingrassarono e vissero in delizie, per la tua gran bontà.

26 Ma essi furon disubbidienti, si ribellarono contro di te, si gettaron la tua legge dietro le spalle, uccisero i tuoi profeti che li scongiuravano di tornare a te, e t’oltraggiarono gravemente.

27 Perciò tu li desti nelle mani de’ loro nemici, che li oppressero; ma al tempo della loro distretta essi gridarono a te, e tu li esaudisti dal cielo; e, nella tua immensa misericordia, tu desti loro de’ liberatori, che li salvarono dalle mani dei loro nemici.

28 Ma quando aveano riposo, ricominciavano a fare il male dinanzi a te; perciò tu li abbandonavi nelle mani dei loro nemici, i quali diventavan loro dominatori; poi, quando ricominciavano a gridare a te, tu li esaudivi dal cielo; e così, nella tua misericordia, più volte li salvasti.

29 Tu li scongiuravi per farli tornare alla tua legge; ma essi s’inorgoglivano e non ubbidivano ai tuoi comandamenti, peccavano contro le tue prescrizioni che fanno vivere chi le mette in pratica; la loro spalla rifiutava il giogo, essi induravano le loro cervici e non voleano ubbidire.

30 E pazientasti con essi molti anni, e li scongiurasti per mezzo del tuo spirito e per bocca de’ tuoi profeti; ma essi non vollero prestare orecchio, e tu li desti nelle mani de’ popoli de’ paesi stranieri.

31 Però, nella tua immensa compassione, tu non li sterminasti del tutto, e non li abbandonasti, perché sei un Dio clemente e misericordioso.

32 Ora dunque, o Dio nostro, Dio grande, potente e tremendo, che mantieni il patto e la misericordia, non paian poca cosa agli occhi tuoi tutte queste afflizioni che son piombate addosso a noi, ai nostri re, ai nostri capi, ai nostri sacerdoti, ai nostri profeti, ai nostri padri, a tutto il tuo popolo, dal tempo dei re d’Assiria al dì d’oggi.

33 Tu sei stato giusto in tutto quello che ci è avvenuto, poiché tu hai agito fedelmente, mentre noi ci siam condotti empiamente.

34 I nostri re, i nostri capi, i nostri sacerdoti, i nostri padri non hanno messa in pratica la tua legge e non hanno ubbidito né ai comandamenti né agli ammonimenti coi quali tu li scongiuravi.

35 Ed essi, mentre godevano del loro regno, dei grandi benefizi che tu largivi loro e del vasto e fertile paese che tu avevi messo a loro disposizione, non ti servirono e non abbandonarono le loro opere malvage.

36 E oggi eccoci schiavi! Eccoci schiavi nel paese che tu desti ai nostri padri, perché ne mangiassero i frutti e ne godessero i beni.

37 Ed esso moltiplica i suoi prodotti per i re ai quali tu ci hai sottoposti a cagion dei nostri peccati, e che son padroni dei nostri corpi e del nostro bestiame a loro talento; e noi siamo in gran distretta".

38 A motivo di tutto questo, noi fermammo un patto stabile e lo mettemmo per iscritto; e i nostri capi, i nostri Leviti e i nostri sacerdoti vi apposero il loro sigillo.
