1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. 3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s: 4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. 5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. 7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. 8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.

9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. 11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem: 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon, 21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, 22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

1 Boaz monta à la porte, et s'y arrêta. Or voici, celui qui avait droit de rachat, et dont Boaz avait parlé, vint à passer. Boaz lui dit: Approche, reste ici, toi un tel. Et il s'approcha, et s'arrêta.

2 Boaz prit alors dix hommes parmi les anciens de la ville, et il dit: Asseyez-vous ici. Et ils s'assirent.

3 Puis il dit à celui qui avait le droit de rachat: Naomi, revenue du pays de Moab, a vendu la pièce de terre qui appartenait à notre frère Elimélec.

4 J'ai cru devoir t'en informer, et te dire: Acquiers-la, en présence des habitants et en présence des anciens de mon peuple. Si tu veux racheter, rachète; mais si tu ne veux pas, déclare-le-moi, afin que je le sache. Car il n'y a personne avant toi qui ait le droit de rachat, et je l'ai après toi. Et il répondit: je rachèterai.

5 Boaz dit: Le jour où tu acquerras le champ de la main de Naomi, tu l'acquerras en même temps de Ruth la Moabite, femme du défunt, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage.

6 Et celui qui avait le droit de rachat répondit: Je ne puis pas racheter pour mon compte, crainte de détruire mon héritage; prends pour toi mon droit de rachat, car je ne puis pas racheter.

7 Autrefois en Israël, pour valider une affaire quelconque relative à un rachat ou à un échange, l'un ôtait son soulier et le donnait à l'autre: cela servait de témoignage en Israël.

8 Celui qui avait le droit de rachat dit donc à Boaz: Acquiers pour ton compte! Et il ôta son soulier.

9 Alors Boaz dit aux anciens et à tout le peuple: Vous êtes témoins aujourd'hui que j'ai acquis de la main de Naomi tout ce qui appartenait à Elimélec, à Kiljon et à Machlon,

10 et que je me suis également acquis pour femme Ruth la Moabite, femme de Machlon, pour relever le nom du défunt dans son héritage, et afin que le nom du défunt ne soit point retranché d'entre ses frères et de la porte de son lieu. Vous en êtes témoins aujourd'hui!

11 Tout le peuple qui était à la porte et les anciens dirent: Nous en sommes témoins! Que l'Eternel rende la femme qui entre dans ta maison semblable à Rachel et à Léa, qui toutes les deux ont bâti la maison d'Israël! Manifeste ta force dans Ephrata, et fais-toi un nom dans Bethléhem!

12 Puisse la postérité que l'Eternel te donnera par cette jeune femme rendre ta maison semblable à la maison de Pérets, qui fut enfanté à Juda par Tamar!

13 Boaz prit Ruth, qui devint sa femme, et il alla vers elle. L'Eternel permit à Ruth de concevoir, et elle enfanta un fils.

14 Les femmes dirent à Naomi: Béni soit l'Eternel, qui ne t'a point laissé manquer aujourd'hui d'un homme ayant droit de rachat, et dont le nom sera célébré en Israël!

15 Cet enfant restaurera ton âme, et sera le soutien de ta vieillesse; car ta belle-fille, qui t'aime, l'a enfanté, elle qui vaut mieux pour toi que sept fils.

16 Naomi prit l'enfant et le mit sur son sein, et elle fut sa garde.

17 Les voisines lui donnèrent un nom, en disant: Un fils est né à Naomi! Et elles l'appelèrent Obed. Ce fut le père d'Isaï père de David.

18 Voici la postérité de Pérets. Pérets engendra Hetsron;

19 Hetsron engendra Ram; Ram engendra Amminadab;

20 Amminadab engendra Nachschon; Nachschon engendra Salmon;

21 Salmon engendra Boaz; Boaz engendra Obed;

22 Obed engendra Isaï; et Isaï engendra David.

1 Or Boaz salì alla porta della città e quivi si pose a sedere. Ed ecco passare colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto e del quale Boaz avea parlato. E Boaz gli disse: "O tu, tal de’ tali, vieni un po’ qua, e mettiti qui a sedere!" Quello s’avvicinò e si mise a sedere.

2 Boaz allora prese dieci uomini fra gli anziani della città, e disse loro: "Sedete qui". E quelli si misero a sedere.

3 Poi Boaz disse a colui che avea il diritto di riscatto: "Naomi, ch’è tornata dalle campagne di Moab, mette in vendita la parte di terra che apparteneva ad Elimelec nostro fratello.

4 Ho creduto bene d’informartene, e di dirti: Fanne acquisto in presenza degli abitanti del luogo e degli anziani del mio popolo. Se vuoi far valere il tuo diritto di riscatto, fallo; ma se non lo vuoi far valere, dimmelo, ond’io lo sappia; perché non c’è nessuno, fuori di te, che abbia il diritto di riscatto; e, dopo di te, vengo io". Quegli rispose: "Farò valere il mio diritto".

5 Allora Boaz disse: "Il giorno che acquisterai il campo dalla mano di Naomi, tu lo acquisterai anche da uth la Moabita, moglie del defunto, per far rivivere il nome del defunto nella sua eredità".

6 Colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto rispose: "Io non posso far valere il mio diritto, perché rovinerei la mia propria eredità; subentra tu nel mio diritto di riscatto, giacché io non posso valermene".

7 Or v’era in Israele quest’antica usanza, per render valido un contratto di riscatto o di cessione di proprietà; uno si cavava la scarpa e la dava all’altro; era il modo di attestazione in Israele.

8 Così, colui che aveva il diritto di riscatto disse a Boaz: "Fa’ l’acquisto per conto tuo," si cavò la scarpa.

9 Allora Boaz disse agli anziani e a tutto il popolo: "Voi siete oggi testimoni che io ho acquistato dalle mani di Naomi tutto quello che apparteneva a Elimelec, a Kilion ed a Mahlon,

10 e che ho pure acquistato Ruth, la Moabita, moglie di Mahlon, perché sia mia moglie, affin di far rivivere il nome del defunto nella sua eredità, onde il nome del defunto non si estingua tra i suoi fratelli e alla porta della sua città. Voi ne siete oggi testimoni".

11 E tutto il popolo che si trovava alla porta della città e gli anziani risposero: "Ne siamo testimoni. L’Eterno faccia che la donna ch’entra in casa tua sia come Rachele e come Lea, le due donne che fondarono la casa d’Israele. Spiega la tua forza in Efrata, e fatti un nome in Bethlehem!

12 Possa la progenie che l’Eterno ti darà da questa giovine, render la tua casa simile alla casa di Perets, che Tamar partorì a Giuda!"

13 Così Boaz prese Ruth, che divenne sua moglie. Egli entrò da lei, e l’Eterno le diè la grazia di concepire, ed ella partorì un figliuolo.

14 E le donne dicevano a Naomi: "Benedetto l’Eterno, il quale non ha permesso che oggi ti mancasse un ontinuatore della tua famiglia! Il nome di lui sia celebrato in Israele!

15 Egli consolerà l’anima tua e sarà il sostegno della tua vecchiaia; l’ha partorito la tua nuora che t’ama, e che vale per te più di sette figliuoli".

16 E Naomi prese il bambino, se lo strinse al seno, e gli fece da nutrice.

17 Le vicine gli dettero il nome, e dicevano: "E’ nato un figliuolo a Naomi!" Lo chiamarono Obed. Egli fu padre d’Isai, padre di Davide.

18 Ecco la posterità di Perets: Perets generò Hetsron;

19 Hetsron generò Ram; Ram generò Amminadab;

20 Amminadab generò Nahshon; Nahshon generò Salmon;

21 Salmon generò Boaz; Boaz generò Obed;

22 Obed generò Isai, e Isai generò Davide.
