1 Jesus aber begab sich an den Ölberg.

2 Am folgenden Morgen jedoch fand er sich wieder im Tempel ein, und das gesamte Volk kam zu ihm; er setzte sich dann und lehrte sie.

3 Da führten die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer eine Frau herbei, die beim Ehebruch ergriffen (oder: ertappt) worden war, stellten sie in die Mitte

4 und sagten zu ihm: »Meister, diese Frau ist auf frischer Tat beim Ehebruch ergriffen (oder: ertappt) worden.

5 Nun hat Mose uns im Gesetz geboten, solche Frauen zu steinigen (3.Mose 20,10; 5.Mose 22,22). Was sagst nun du dazu?«

6 Dies sagten sie aber, um ihn zu versuchen, damit sie einen Grund zur Anklage gegen ihn hätten. Jesus aber bückte sich nieder und schrieb mit dem Finger auf den Erdboden.

7 Als sie aber ihre Frage an ihn mehrfach wiederholten, richtete er sich auf und sagte zu ihnen: »Wer unter euch ohne Sünde ist, werfe den ersten Stein auf sie!«

8 Hierauf bückte er sich aufs neue und schrieb auf dem Erdboden weiter.

9 Als aber jene das gehört hatten, gingen sie einer nach dem andern weg, die Ältesten zuerst bis zu den Letzten, und Jesus blieb allein zurück mit der Frau, die in der Mitte (= vor ihm) stand.

10 Da richtete Jesus sich auf und fragte sie: »Frau, wo sind sie (d.h. deine Ankläger)? Hat keiner dich verurteilt?« Sie antwortete: »Keiner, Herr.«

11 Da sagte Jesus: »Auch ich verurteile dich nicht: gehe hin und sündige hinfort nicht mehr!«

12 Nun redete Jesus aufs neue zu ihnen und sagte: »Ich bin das Licht der Welt: wer mir nachfolgt, wird nicht in der Finsternis wandeln, sondern das Licht des Lebens haben.«

13 Da sagten die Pharisäer zu ihm: »Du legst Zeugnis über dich (oder: für dich) selbst ab: dein Zeugnis ist ungültig.« (vgl. 5,31)

14 Jesus gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Auch wenn ich über mich (oder: für mich) selbst Zeugnis ablege, so ist mein Zeugnis doch gültig, denn ich weiß, woher ich gekommen bin und wohin ich gehe; ihr aber wißt nicht, woher ich komme und wohin ich gehe.

15 Ihr richtet nach dem Fleisch, ich richte überhaupt niemand.

16 Doch auch wenn ich richte, ist mein Urteil wahr (= unverwerflich); denn ich stehe (mit meinem Zeugnis) nicht allein, sondern mit mir ist der, welcher mich gesandt hat.

17 Nun steht doch auch in eurem Gesetz geschrieben, daß das Zeugnis zweier Personen wahr (= rechtsgültig) ist (5.Mose 17,6; 19,15).

18 Ich lege Zeugnis von mir (oder: für mich) ab, und der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, legt auch Zeugnis von mir (oder: für mich) ab.«

19 Da fragten sie ihn: »Wo ist (denn) dein Vater?« Jesus antwortete: »Weder mich noch meinen Vater kennt ihr; wenn ihr mich kenntet, würdet ihr auch meinen Vater kennen.«

20 Diese Worte sprach er aus, als er beim Opferkasten im Tempel lehrte; und niemand legte Hand an ihn, weil seine Stunde noch nicht gekommen war.

21 Aufs neue sagte er dann zu ihnen: »Ich gehe weg; dann werdet ihr mich suchen und in eurer Sünde sterben. Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen.«

22 Da sagten die Juden: »Will er sich etwa das Leben nehmen, weil er sagt: ›Wohin ich gehe, dahin könnt ihr nicht kommen‹?«

23 Da sagte er zu ihnen: »Ihr seid von unten her, ich bin von oben her; ihr seid aus dieser Welt, ich bin nicht aus dieser Welt.

24 Darum habe ich euch gesagt, daß ihr in euren Sünden sterben werdet; denn wenn ihr nicht glaubt, daß ich es bin (d.h. der Messias bin), so werdet ihr in euren Sünden sterben.«

25 Da fragten sie ihn: »Wer bist du denn?« Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Das, was ich von Anfang an (gesagt habe) und auch jetzt euch sage.

26 Vieles hätte ich über euch noch zu sagen und zu richten; aber der mich gesandt hat, ist wahrhaftig, und ich – was ich von ihm gehört habe, das rede ich zur Welt.«

27 Sie verstanden nicht, daß er vom Vater zu ihnen redete.

28 Da fuhr nun Jesus fort: »Wenn ihr den Menschensohn erhöht haben werdet, dann werdet ihr erkennen, daß ich es bin (V.24) und daß ich nichts von mir selbst aus tue, sondern so rede, wie der Vater mich gelehrt hat.

29 Und der mich gesandt hat, ist mit (oder: bei) mir; er hat mich nicht allein gelassen, weil ich allezeit das tue, was ihm wohlgefällig ist.«

30 Als er das sagte, kamen viele zum Glauben an ihn.

31 Nun sagte Jesus zu den Juden, die an ihn gläubig geworden waren: »Wenn ihr in meinem Wort bleibt (= Hörer und Täter meines Wortes bleibt), so seid ihr in Wahrheit meine Jünger

32 und werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch frei machen.«

33 Da entgegneten sie ihm: »Wir sind Abrahams Nachkommenschaft und haben noch niemals jemandem als Knechte gedient; wie kannst du da sagen: ›Ihr werdet frei werden‹?«

34 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: ein jeder, der Sünde tut, ist ein Knecht der Sünde.

35 Der Knecht aber bleibt nicht für immer im Hause, der Sohn dagegen bleibt für immer darin.

36 Wenn also der Sohn euch frei gemacht hat, dann werdet ihr wirklich frei sein.«

37 »Ich weiß wohl, daß ihr Abrahams Nachkommenschaft seid; aber ihr sucht mich zu töten, weil mein Wort keinen Eingang bei euch findet.

38 Was ich beim (d.h. bei meinem) Vater gesehen habe, das rede ich; dementsprechend tut auch ihr das, was ihr vom (d.h. von eurem) Vater gehört habt.«

39 Sie antworteten ihm mit der Versicherung: »Unser Vater ist Abraham!« Jesus erwiderte ihnen: »Wenn ihr Abrahams Kinder seid, so handelt auch so wie Abraham (gehandelt hat)!

40 Nun aber geht ihr darauf aus, mich zu töten, einen Mann, der euch die Wahrheit verkündigt hat, wie ich sie von Gott gehört habe: so etwas hat Abraham nicht getan.

41 Ihr vollbringt die Werke eures Vaters.« Sie erwiderten ihm: »Wir sind keine unehelichen Kinder; wir haben nur einen einzigen Vater, nämlich Gott.«

42 Da sagte Jesus zu ihnen: »Wenn Gott euer Vater wäre, dann würdet ihr mich lieben; denn ich bin von Gott ausgegangen und (von ihm) gekommen; ich bin nicht von mir selbst gekommen, sondern er hat mich gesandt.

43 Wie geht es nun zu, daß ihr meine Art zu reden nicht versteht? Weil ihr nicht imstande seid, das, was meine Worte besagen, auch nur anzuhören.

44 Ihr stammt eben vom Teufel als eurem Vater und wollt nach den Gelüsten eures Vaters handeln. Der ist ein Menschenmörder von Anfang an gewesen und steht nicht in der Wahrheit, weil die Wahrheit nicht in ihm ist. Wenn er die Lüge redet, dann redet er aus seinem eigensten Wesen heraus, denn er ist ein Lügner und der Vater von ihr (d.h. von der Lüge).

45 Weil ich dagegen die Wahrheit rede, schenkt ihr mir keinen Glauben.

46 Wer von euch kann mich einer Sünde zeihen (oder: überführen)? Wenn ich die Wahrheit rede, warum schenkt ihr mir keinen Glauben?

47 Wer aus Gott ist (oder: von Gott stammt), hört die Worte Gottes; deshalb hört ihr sie nicht, weil ihr nicht von Gott seid.«

48 Da gaben ihm die Juden zur Antwort: »Sagen wir nicht mit Recht, daß du ein Samariter und von einem bösen Geist besessen bist?«

49 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Ich bin von keinem bösen Geist besessen, sondern ehre meinen Vater; doch ihr beschimpft mich.

50 Ich aber sorge nicht für meine Ehre: es ist einer da, der (für sie) sorgt und Gericht (für sie) hält.

51 Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt (oder: hält), wird er den Tod in Ewigkeit nicht sehen.«

52 Da entgegneten ihm die Juden: »Jetzt wissen wir sicher, daß du von einem bösen Geist besessen bist. Abraham ist gestorben und (ebenso) die Propheten, und du behauptest: ›Wenn jemand mein Wort bewahrt (oder: hält), wird er den Tod in Ewigkeit nicht schmecken.‹

53 Bist du etwa größer als unser Vater Abraham, der doch gestorben ist? Und auch die Propheten sind gestorben. Was machst du aus dir selbst?«

54 Jesus antwortete: »Wenn ich mich selbst ehrte, so wäre es mit meiner Ehre nichts; nein, mein Vater ist es, der mich ehrt, derselbe, von dem ihr behauptet, er sei euer Gott;

55 und dabei habt ihr ihn nicht erkannt. Ich aber kenne ihn; und wenn ich sagen wollte, daß ich ihn nicht kenne, so würde ich euch gleich sein, nämlich ein Lügner. Doch ich kenne ihn und bewahre (oder: halte) sein Wort.

56 Euer Vater Abraham hat darüber gejubelt, daß er meinen Tag (= den Tag meiner Geburt) sehen sollte, und er hat ihn gesehen und sich darüber gefreut.«

57 Da sagten die Juden zu ihm: »Du bist noch nicht fünfzig Jahre alt und willst Abraham gesehen haben?«

58 Jesus antwortete ihnen: »Wahrlich, wahrlich ich sage euch: Ehe Abraham (geboren) ward, bin ich.«

59 Da hoben sie Steine auf, um sie auf ihn zu werfen; Jesus aber verbarg sich und ging aus dem Tempel hinaus.

1 Jesus but went into the mountain of the olive–trees;

2 early morn and again he came into the temple, and all the people came to him; and having sat down he taught them.

3 Bring and the scribes and the Pharisees to him a woman in adultery having been taken, and placing her in middle,

4 they say to him: O teacher, this the woman was taken in the very act committing adultery.

5 In now the law Moses to us commanded the such like to be stoned? thou therefore what sayest thou?

6 This but they said tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. The but Jesus down stooping, with the finger wrote on the ground.

7 When but they continued asking him, having raised up he said to them: He without sin of you, first the stone on her let him cast.

8 And again down stooping, wrote on the ground.

9 They and having heard, and by the conscience being convinced, went out one by one, beginning from the elders even to the last ones; and left alone the Jesus, and the woman in middle standing.

10 Having raised up and the Jesus, and no one seeing but the woman, said to her: The woman, where are those the accusers of thee? no one thee condemned?

11 She and said: No one, O lord. Said and to her the Jesus: Neither I thee condemn; go, and no longer do thou sin.

12 Again therefore the Jesus to them spoke, saying: I am the light of the world; he following me, not not shall walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of the life.

13 Said therefore to him the Pharisees: Thou concerning thyself dost testify; the testimony of thee not is true.

14 Answered Jesus and said to them: Even if I testify concerning myself, true is the testimony of me; because I know, whence I came, and where I go; you but not know, whence I came, or where I go.

15 You according to the flesh judge, I not judge no one.

16 Even if judge but I, the judgment the my true is; because alone not I am, but I and the having sent me Father.

17 Also in the law and the your it has been written: That two of men the testimony true is.

18 I am he testifying concerning myself, and testifies concerning me the having sent me Father.

19 They said then to him: Where is the father of thee? Answered Jesus: Neither me you know, nor the Father of me. If me you knew, also the Father of me you would know.

20 These the words he spoke in the treasury, teaching in the temple; and no one seized him, because not yet had come the hour of him.

21 Said therefore again to them the Jesus: I go away, and you will seek me, and in the sin of you you will die; where I go, you not are able to come.

22 Said then the Jews: Not will he kill himself, because he says: Where I go, you not are able to come?

23 And he said to them: You from the beneath are, I from the above am; you from the world this are, I not am from the world this.

24 I said therefore to you, that you will die in the sins of you; if for not you may believe, that I am, you will die in the sins of you.

25 They said therefore to him: Thou who art? And said to them the Jesus: The beginning what, what even I say to you.

26 Many things I have about you to say, and to judge; but he having sent me true is; and I what I heard from him, these things I say to the world.

27 Not they knew, that the Father to them he spoke.

28 Said then to them the Jesus: When you may left up the son of the man, then you will know that I am; and from myself I do nothing, but as taught me the Father of me these things I say;

29 and he having sent me, with me is; not left me alone the Father, because I the things pleasing to him do always.

30 These of him speaking, many believed into him.

31 Said then the Jesus to those having believed him Jews: If you may abide in the word the my, truly disciples of me you are,

32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make free you.

33 They answered him: Seed of Abraham we are, and to no one have we been slaves at any time; how thou sayest: That free you shall become?

34 Answered them the Jesus: Indeed indeed I say to you, that every one who is doing the sin, a slave is of the sin.

35 The but slave not abides in the house to the age; the son abides to the age.

36 If then the son you may make free, really free you shall be.

37 I know, that seed of Abraham you are; but you seek me to kill, because the word the mine not has place in you.

38 I what have seen from the Father of me, I speak; and you therefore what you have seen from the father of you, do.

39 They answered and said to him: The father of us Abraham is. Says to them the Jesus: If children of the Abraham you are, the works of the Abraham you would do.

40 Now but you seek me to kill, a man, who the truth to you has spoken, which I have heard from the God; this Abraham not did. You do the works of the father of you.

41 They said then to him: We from fornication not have been born; one father we have, the God.

42 Said to them the Jesus: If the God a father of you was, you would love me; I for from the God came out and am come; not even for of myself I have come, but he me sent.

43 Why the speech the mine not know you? Because not you are able to hear the word the mine.

44 You from the father the accuser are, and the lusts of the father of you you wish to do. He a manslayer was from a beginning, and in the truth not has stood; because not is truth in him. When may speak the falsehood, from the own he speaks; because a liar is, also the father of him.

45 I but because the truth I speak, not you believe me.

46 Who of you convicts me concerning sin? If truth I speak, why you not believe me?

47 He being from the God, the words of the God hears; through this you not hear, because from the God not you are.

48 Answered the Jews and said to him: Not well say we, that a Samaritan art thou, and a demon thou hast?

49 Answered Jesus: I a demon not have, but I honor the Father of me, and you dishonor me.

50 I but not seek the glory of me; it is he seeking and judging.

51 Indeed indeed I say to you, if any one the word the mine may keep, death not not he may see to the age.

52 Said then to him the Jews: Now we know, that a demon thou hast; Abraham died and the prophets, and thou sayest: If any one the word of me may keep, not not may taste of death to the age.

53 Not thou greater art of the father of us Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom thyself makest thou?

54 Answered Jesus: If I glorify myself, the glory of me nothing is. He is the Father of me he glorifying me, whom you say, that a God of you he is,

55 and not you know him; I but know him. And if I say, that not I know him, I shall be like you, a liar. But I know him, and the word of him I keep.

56 Abraham the father of you ardently desired, that he might see the day the my; and he saw, and was glad.

57 Said then the Jews to him: Fifty years not yet thou art, and Abraham hast thou seen?

58 Said to them the Jesus: Indeed indeed I say to you, before Abraham to have been born, I am.

59 They took up therefore stones, that they might cast on him; Jesus but hid himself, and went out of the temple.
