Abraham was now very old, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. 
He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. 
I want you to swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 
but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac." 
The servant asked him, "What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?" 
"Make sure that you do not take my son back there," Abraham said. 
"The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father's household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspring "I will give this land' —he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 
If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there." 
So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter. 
Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master's camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim "and made his way to the town of Nahor. 
He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water. 
Then he prayed, "LORD, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 
See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 
May it be that when I say to a young woman, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too' —let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master." 
Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. 
The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. 
The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your jar." 
"Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. 
After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink." 
So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. 
Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. 
When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka "and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels. [^4] 
Then he asked, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?" 
She answered him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor." 
And she added, "We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night." 
Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD, 
saying, "Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives." 
The young woman ran and told her mother's household about these things. 
Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 
As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 
"Come, you who are blessed by the LORD," he said. "Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels." 
So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet. 
Then food was set before him, but he said, "I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say." "Then tell us," Laban said. 
So he said, "I am Abraham's servant. 
The LORD has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. 
My master's wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns. 
And my master made me swear an oath, and said, 'You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, 
but go to my father's family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.' 
"Then I asked my master, 'What if the woman will not come back with me?' 
"He replied, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father's family. 
You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you —then you will be released from my oath.' 
"When I came to the spring today, I said, 'LORD, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come. 
See, I am standing beside this spring. If a young woman comes out to draw water and I say to her, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar," 
and if she says to me, "Drink, and I'll draw water for your camels too," let her be the one the LORD has chosen for my master's son.' 
"Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' 
"She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too.' So I drank, and she watered the camels also. 
"I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' "She said, 'The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.' "Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms, 
and I bowed down and worshiped the LORD. I praised the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master's brother for his son. 
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn." 
Laban and Bethuel answered, "This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. 
Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has directed." 
When Abraham's servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD. 
Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother. 
Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, "Send me on my way to my master." 
But her brother and her mother replied, "Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you "may go." 
But he said to them, "Do not detain me, now that the LORD has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master." 
Then they said, "Let's call the young woman and ask her about it." 
So they called Rebekah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?" "I will go," she said. 
So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham's servant and his men. 
And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the cities of their enemies." 
Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left. 
Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. 
He went out to the field one evening to meditate, "and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. 
Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel 
and asked the servant, "Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?" "He is my master," the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. 
Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 
Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. 

And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 
And Abraham said to his oldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh: 
And I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 
But you shall go to my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife to my son Isaac. 
And the servant said to him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land: must I needs bring your son again to the land from from where you came? 
And Abraham said to him, Beware you that you bring not my son thither again. 
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father' house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spoke to me, and that swore to me, saying, To your seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife to my son from there. 
And if the woman will not be willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 
And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter. 
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. 
And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water. 
And he said O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray you, send me good speed this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 
Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down your pitcher, I pray you, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also: let the same be she that you have appointed for your servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that you have showed kindness to my master. 
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham' brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder. 
And the damsel was very fair to look on, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. 
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray you, drink a little water of your pitcher. 
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him drink. 
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for your camels also, until they have done drinking. 
And she hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. 
And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 
And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 
And said, Whose daughter are you? tell me, I pray you: is there room in your father' house for us to lodge in? 
And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bore to Nahor. 
She said moreover to him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 
And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who has not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master' brothers. 
And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother' house these things. 
And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out to the man, to the well. 
And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets on his sister' hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spoke the man to me; that he came to the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 
And he said, Come in, you blessed of the LORD; why stand you without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. 
And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men' feet that were with him. 
And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on. 
And he said, I am Abraham' servant. 
And the LORD has blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he has given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 
And Sarah my master' wife bore a son to my master when she was old: and to him has he given all that he has. 
And my master made me swear, saying, You shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 
But you shall go to my father' house, and to my kindred, and take a wife to my son. 
And I said to my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 
And he said to me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father' house: 
Then shall you be clear from this my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they give not you one, you shall be clear from my oath. 
And I came this day to the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go: 
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin comes forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray you, a little water of your pitcher to drink; 
And she say to me, Both drink you, and I will also draw for your camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD has appointed out for my master' son. 
And before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well, and drew water: and I said to her, Let me drink, I pray you. 
And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give your camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 
And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter are you? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor' son, whom Milcah bore to him: and I put the earring on her face, and the bracelets on her hands. 
And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master' brother' daughter to his son. 
And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 
Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceeds from the LORD: we cannot speak to you bad or good. 
Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her, and go, and let her be your master' son' wife, as the LORD has spoken. 
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham' servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 
And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 
And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away to my master. 
And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 
And he said to them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 
And they said, We will call the damsel, and inquire at her mouth. 
And they called Rebekah, and said to her, Will you go with this man? And she said, I will go. 
And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham' servant, and his men. 
And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, You are our sister, be you the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 
And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode on the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 
And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelled in the south country. 
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 
And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 
For she had said to the servant, What man is this that walks in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a veil, and covered herself. 
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 
And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah' tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother' death.
