Nehemiah 12

Priests and Levites

1 These were the priests and Levites who returned with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Joshua:

Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

2 Amariah, Malluk, Hattush,

3 Shekaniah, Rehum, Meremoth,

4 Iddo, Ginnethon,*12:4 Many Hebrew manuscripts and Vulgate (see also verse 16); most Hebrew manuscripts Ginnethoi Abijah,

5 Mijamin,*12:5 A variant of Miniamin Moadiah, Bilgah,

6 Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah,

7 Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah.

These were the leaders of the priests and their associates in the days of Joshua.

8 The Levites were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, together with his associates, was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving. 9 Bakbukiah and Unni, their associates, stood opposite them in the services.

10 Joshua was the father of Joiakim, Joiakim the father of Eliashib, Eliashib the father of Joiada, 11 Joiada the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan the father of Jaddua.

12 In the days of Joiakim, these were the heads of the priestly families:

of Seraiah’s family, Meraiah;

of Jeremiah’s, Hananiah;

13 of Ezra’s, Meshullam;

of Amariah’s, Jehohanan;

14 of Malluk’s, Jonathan;

of Shekaniah’s,*12:14 Very many Hebrew manuscripts, some Septuagint manuscripts and Syriac (see also verse 3); most Hebrew manuscripts Shebaniah’s Joseph;

15 of Harim’s, Adna;

of Meremoth’s,*12:15 Some Septuagint manuscripts (see also verse 3); Hebrew Meraioth’s Helkai;

16 of Iddo’s, Zechariah;

of Ginnethon’s, Meshullam;

17 of Abijah’s, Zikri;

of Miniamin’s and of Moadiah’s, Piltai;

18 of Bilgah’s, Shammua;

of Shemaiah’s, Jehonathan;

19 of Joiarib’s, Mattenai;

of Jedaiah’s, Uzzi;

20 of Sallu’s, Kallai;

of Amok’s, Eber;

21 of Hilkiah’s, Hashabiah;

of Jedaiah’s, Nethanel.

22 The family heads of the Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua, as well as those of the priests, were recorded in the reign of Darius the Persian. 23 The family heads among the descendants of Levi up to the time of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the book of the annals. 24 And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their associates, who stood opposite them to give praise and thanksgiving, one section responding to the other, as prescribed by David the man of God.

25 Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon and Akkub were gatekeepers who guarded the storerooms at the gates. 26 They served in the days of Joiakim son of Joshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra the priest, the teacher of the Law.

Dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem

27 At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres. 28 The musicians also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites, 29 from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the musicians had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. 30 When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall.

31 I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of*12:31 Or go alongside the wall. I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of*12:31 Or proceed alongside the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate. 32 Hoshaiah and half the leaders of Judah followed them, 33 along with Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam, 34 Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah, 35 as well as some priests with trumpets, and also Zechariah son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Micaiah, the son of Zakkur, the son of Asaph, 36 and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani—with musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God. Ezra the teacher of the Law led the procession. 37 At the Fountain Gate they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the site of David’s palace to the Water Gate on the east.

38 The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of*12:38 Or them alongside the wall, together with half the people—past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, 39 over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah*12:39 Or Old Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. At the Gate of the Guard they stopped.

40 The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, 41 as well as the priests—Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah with their trumpets— 42 and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. 43 And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

44 At that time men were appointed to be in charge of the storerooms for the contributions, firstfruits and tithes. From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites. 45 They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, as did also the musicians and gatekeepers, according to the commands of David and his son Solomon. 46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 47 So in the days of Zerubbabel and of Nehemiah, all Israel contributed the daily portions for the musicians and the gatekeepers. They also set aside the portion for the other Levites, and the Levites set aside the portion for the descendants of Aaron.

Estes foram os chefes dos sacerdotes e os seus parentes nos dias de Jesua.

8 Os levitas foram Jesua, Binui, Cadmiel, Serebias, Judá e também Matanias, o qual, com os seus parentes, estava encarregado dos cânticos de ações de graças. 9 Baquebuquias e Uni, os seus parentes, ficavam em frente deles durante as ministrações.

10 Jesua foi o pai de Joiaquim,

Joiaquim foi o pai de Eliasibe,

Eliasibe foi o pai de Joiada,

11 Joiada foi o pai de Jônatas,

Jônatas foi o pai de Jadua.

12 Nos dias de Joiaquim, estes foram os chefes das famílias dos sacerdotes:

da família de Seraías, Meraías;

da família de Jeremias, Hananias;

13 da família de Esdras, Mesulão;

da família de Amarias, Joanã;

14 da família de Maluqui, Jônatas;

da família de Secanias, José;

15 da família de Harim, Adna;

da família de Meremote, Helcai;

16 da família de Ido, Zacarias;

da família de Ginetom, Mesulão;

17 da família de Abias, Zicri;

da família de Miniamim e de Moadias, Piltai;

18 da família de Bilga, Samua;

da família de Semaías, Jônatas;

19 da família de Joiaribe, Matenai;

da família de Jedaías, Uzi;

20 da família de Salai, Calai;

da família de Amoque, Héber;

21 da família de Hilquias, Hasabias;

da família de Jedaías, Natanael.

22 Nos dias de Eliasibe, Joiada, Joanã e Jadua, bem como os chefes das famílias dos levitas e dos sacerdotes, foram registrados durante o reinado de Dario, o persa. 23 Os chefes das famílias dos descendentes de Levi até a época de Joanã, filho de Eliasibe, foram registrados no livro das crônicas. 24 Os líderes dos levitas foram Hasabias, Serebias, Jesua, filho de Cadmiel, e os seus parentes, que ficavam em frente deles quando entoavam louvores e ações de graças; um grupo respondia ao outro, conforme ordenado por Davi, homem de Deus.

25 Matanias, Baquebuquias, Obadias, Mesulão, Talmom e Acube eram porteiros; vigiavam os depósitos localizados às portas. 26 Eles serviram nos dias de Joiaquim, filho de Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e nos dias do governador Neemias e de Esdras, o sacerdote e escriba.

A dedicação do muro de Jerusalém

27 Por ocasião da dedicação do muro de Jerusalém, os levitas foram procurados e trazidos de onde moravam a Jerusalém para celebrarem a dedicação alegremente, com cânticos e ações de graças, ao som de címbalos, harpas e liras. 28 Os cantores foram trazidos dos arredores de Jerusalém, dos povoados dos netofatitas, 29 de Bete-Gilgal e das regiões de Geba e de Azmavete, pois esses cantores haviam construído povoados para si ao redor de Jerusalém. 30 Os sacerdotes e os levitas se purificaram cerimonialmente e depois purificaram também o povo, as portas e os muros.

31 Ordenei aos líderes de Judá que subissem ao alto do muro. Também designei dois grandes coros para darem graças. Um deles avançou em cima do muro, para a direita, até a porta do Esterco, 32 seguido de Hosaías e metade dos líderes de Judá, 33 Azarias, Esdras, Mesulão, 34 Judá, Benjamim, Semaías e Jeremias, 35 bem como alguns sacerdotes com trombetas: Zacarias, filho de Jônatas, neto de Semaías, bisneto de Matanias, que era filho de Micaías, neto de Zacur, bisneto de Asafe, 36 e os seus parentes Semaías, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Natanael, Judá e Hanani, que tocavam os instrumentos musicais prescritos por Davi, homem de Deus. Esdras, o escriba, ia à frente deles. 37 À porta da Fonte, eles subiram diretamente pelos degraus da Cidade de Davi, na subida para o muro, e passaram sobre a casa de Davi até a porta das Águas, a leste.

38 O segundo coro avançou no sentido oposto. Eu os acompanhei, quando iam sobre o muro, levando comigo a metade do povo; passamos pela torre dos Fornos até o muro Largo, 39 por sobre a porta de Efraim, a porta Jesana,*12.39 Ou porta Velha. a porta dos Peixes, a torre de Hananeel e a torre dos Cem, indo até a porta das Ovelhas. À porta da Guarda, paramos.

40 Os dois coros encarregados das ações de graças assumiram os seus lugares no templo de Deus, o que também fiz, acompanhado da metade dos oficiais 41 e dos sacerdotes Eliaquim, Maaseias, Miniamim, Micaías, Elioenai, Zacarias e Hananias, com as suas trombetas, 42 além de Maaseias, Semaías, Eleazar, Uzi, Joanã, Malquias, Elão e Ézer. Os coros cantaram sob a regência de Israías. 43 Naquele dia, contentes como estavam, ofereceram grandes sacrifícios, pois Deus os enchera de grande alegria. As mulheres e as crianças também se alegraram, e os sons da alegria de Jerusalém podiam ser ouvidos de longe.

44 Naquela ocasião, foram designados alguns encarregados dos depósitos onde se recebiam as contribuições gerais, os primeiros frutos e os dízimos. Das lavouras que havia ao redor das cidades eles deveriam trazer para os depósitos as porções exigidas pela lei para os sacerdotes e para os levitas. De fato, o povo de Judá estava satisfeito com os sacerdotes e com os levitas que ministravam no templo. 45 Eles celebravam o culto ao seu Deus e o ritual de purificação, dos quais também participavam os cantores e os porteiros, de acordo com as ordens de Davi e de Salomão, o seu filho. 46 Pois muito tempo antes, nos dias de Davi e de Asafe, havia regentes para os cantores e para os cânticos de louvor e de ações de graças a Deus. 47 Assim, nos dias de Zorobabel e de Neemias, todo o Israel contribuía com ofertas diárias para os cantores e para os porteiros. Também separavam a parte pertencente aos outros levitas, e os levitas separavam a porção dos descendentes de Arão.
