1 O rei Davi e os líderes dos levitas escolheram os seguintes grupos de famílias de levitas para dirigirem os cultos de adoração: Asafe, Hemã e Jedutum. 2 Os quatro filhos de Asafe: Zacur, José, Netanias e Asarela. Quem os dirigia era Asafe, que anunciava as mensagens de Deus quando o rei mandava.

3 Os seis filhos de Jedutum: Gedalias, Zeri, Jesaías, Simei, Hasabias e Matitias. Dirigidos pelo seu pai, eles anunciavam a mensagem de Deus, acompanhados por música de liras, e cantavam louvores e agradecimentos a Deus, o Senhor.

4 Os catorze filhos de Hemã: Buquias, Matanias, Uziel, Sebuel, Jerimote, Hananias, Hanani, Eliata, Gidalti, Romanti-Ézer, Josbecasa, Maloti, Hotir e Maaziote. 5 Deus deu a Hemã, o profeta do rei, esses catorze filhos e também três filhas, conforme havia prometido, a fim de dar poder a Hemã. 6 Todos os seus filhos cantavam nos serviços religiosos do Templo, tocando pratos, liras e harpas. Quem os dirigia era o pai. Asafe, Jedutum e Hemã estavam debaixo das ordens do rei.

7 Os músicos treinados para tocar instrumentos e cantar louvores a Deus, o Senhor, eram duzentos e oitenta e oito ao todo.

8 Para organizar os turnos de serviço, todos eles tiraram sortes, tanto os jovens como os velhos, os já treinados e os principiantes.

9-31 Esses duzentos e oitenta e oito homens foram divididos de acordo com as suas famílias em vinte e quatro grupos de doze, cada grupo com um chefe.
