2 Reis 10 - Bíblia Online

Jeú escreveu uma carta ao conselho da cidade de Samaria, aos aios dos setenta filhos de Acabe que viviam todos ali, e ainda ao conselho de anciãos de Jezreel: 
Após recepção desta missiva, escolham o melhor dos filhos de Acabe para ser rei, e preparem-se para lutar a favor do seu trono. Porque vocês têm carros de combate, cavalos, armamento e uma cidade fortificada. 
Mas eles estavam demasiado atemorizados para o fazer: Nem dois reis poderiam enfrentar-se com um indivíduo destes!, diziam eles. Que havemos nós de fazer? 
Então o administrador do palácio, juntamente com o governador da cidade, mais o conselho municipal e os aios dos filhos de Acabe, enviaram-lhe uma mensagem: Jeú, nós somos teus servos e faremos tudo o que nos mandares. Resolvemos que sejas tu o nosso rei, em lugar de um dos filhos de Acabe. 
Jeú respondeu-lhes com esta outra mensagem de resposta: Se estão do meu lado e dispostos a obedecer-me, tragam-me as cabeças dos filhos do vosso senhor a Jezreel amanhã a esta hora. (Esses setenta filhos de Acabe viviam nas casas dos responsáveis da cidade, onde tinham sido educados, desde a sua meninice.) Ao receberem a mensagem de Jeú, todos os setenta foram mortos e as suas cabeças embaladas dentro de uns cestos e enviadas a Jeú, que se encontrava em Jezreel. Avisado de que as cabeças tinham chegado, mandou que fizessem um monte delas à entrada da cidade e as deixassem lá até à manhã seguinte. 
No dia seguinte, cedo, saiu e foi falar à multidão que entretanto já se tinha aglomerado ali: Vocês não têm que sentir remorsos de nada, disse-lhes. Fui eu quem conspirou contra o meu senhor e o matou; no entanto não fui eu quem lhe matou os filhos! Foi o Senhor quem o fez, porque tudo quanto ele diz se realiza. Ele declarou, através do seu servo Elias, que isto havia de acontecer aos descendentes de Acabe. 
Jeú matou, posteriormente, todo o resto da família de Acabe que vivia em Jezreel, assim como todas as figuras importantes do seu pessoal administrativo, amigos íntimos, e sacerdotes privados, de forma que não ficou ninguém que se tivesse relacionado de uma forma mais íntima com Acabe. 
Depois Jeú partiu para Samaria e estabeleceu-se aí. Mas antes, passou a noite numa estalagem para pastores, que se encontrava no caminho. 
Enquanto ali estava, viu uns homens que eram irmãos do rei Acazias de Judá. Quem são vocês?, perguntou-lhes.Somos irmãos do rei Acazias. Vamos a Samaria visitar os filhos do rei Acabe e da rainha mãe, Jezabel. 
Apanhem já essa gente!, gritou Jeú para os seus homens. Levou-os para a cisterna junto à casa da tosquia e ali os matou a todos; eram quarenta e dois. 
Ao deixar a estalagem, Jeú encontrou-se com Jonadabe, o filho de Recabe, que vinha justamente ao seu encontro. Depois de se terem cumprimentado, perguntou-lhe Jeú: És tão leal para comigo como eu sou para contigo? Sou, sim, respondeu Jonadabe. Então dá-me a mão. E fê-lo subir para o seu carro real. Vem comigo, continuou ele, e verás quanto eu já fiz para o Senhor. E assim Jonadabe foi com ele. Quando chegou a Samaria, matou todos os parentes próximos de Acabe que ali viviam, tal como o Senhor tinha predito pela boca de Elias. 
Jeú convocou uma grande assembleia dos habitantes da cidade e disse-lhes: Acabe pouco serviu Baal; eu, sim, é que hei-de prestar-lhe culto convenientemente! Mandem juntar-se todos os profetas e sacerdotes de Baal, chamem todos os seus adoradores. Vejam lá, que não falte ninguém, porque pretendo fazer um grande sacrifício ao deus Baal. Quem faltar deverá morrer. Mas é que Jeú dizia isto com astúcia; o seu plano era liquidá-los a eles todos. 
Enviou pois mensageiros por toda a terra de Israel, convocando os adoradores de Baal; estes vieram sem faltar nenhum, enchendo literalmente todo o templo do seu ídolo. Jeú deu ordem ao chefe do guarda-roupa deles: Quero que todas as pessoas tenham vestida a túnica sacerdotal. 
Depois, acompanhado de Jonadabe, o filho de Recabe, entrou no templo e falou à multidão: Certifiquem-se de que aqui não esteja mais ninguém além dos que adoram Baal. Não deixem entrar ninguém que adore o Senhor! 
Quando os sacerdotes começaram a oferecer os sacrifícios e ofertas queimadas, Jeú cercou o edifício com oitenta dos seus homens e disse-lhes: Vão lá dentro e matem-nos a todos. Se deixarem escapar alguém terão de pagar isso com a vida. 
Eles entraram e assassinaram todos os indivíduos que lá se encontravam, lançando os corpos para o exterior. Após isso, penetraram no interior do templo e derrubaram o pilar usado para a adoração de Baal, queimando-o. Derrubaram o edifício e transformaram as ruínas em latrinas, permanecendo assim até ao dia de hoje. Dessa forma Jeú liquidou todo o vestígio do culto de Baal em Israel. Contudo não destruiu os bezerros de ouro que se encontravam em Betel e em Dan - esses bezerros tinham sido o grande pecado de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, porque levou todo o Israel a pecar. 
Posteriormente o Senhor disse a Jeú: Fizeste bem em seguir as minhas instruções, destruindo a dinastia de Acabe. Por isso farei com que o teu filho, o teu neto e ainda o teu bisneto sejam reis de Israel. 
No entanto Jeú não seguiu o Senhor Deus de Israel com todo o seu coração, porque continuou a prestar culto aos bezerros de ouro que Jeroboão mandara fabricar, e que tinham feito cair Israel em grande pecado. 
Por essa altura o Senhor começou a diminuir o território de Israel. O rei Hazael conquistou várias zonas do país a leste do rio Jordão, assim como todo Gileade, Gad e Rúben; também tomou partes de Manassés, desde o ribeiro de Aroer, no vale de Arnom, até Gileade e Basã. 
O resto da história do reinado de Jeú está relatado nas Crónicas dos Reis de Israel. Quando Jeú faleceu, foi enterrado em Samaria. O seu filho Jeoacaz subiu ao trono. Jeú reinou ao todo, como rei de Israel, em Samaria, vinte e oito anos. 

Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters to the rulers of Samaria, to the elders of Jezreel, and to the tutors [appointed by] Ahab, saying, 
And now as soon as this letter comes to you{+}, seeing your{+} master's sons are with you{+}, and there are with you{+} chariots and horses, and a fortified city, and armor; 
look{+} for the best and meet of your{+} master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your{+} master's house. 
But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Look, the two kings didn't stand before him: how then shall we stand? 
And he who was over the household, and he who was over the city, the elders also, and those who brought up [the children], sent to Jehu, saying, We are your slaves, and will do all that you will bid us; we will not make any man king: do that which is good in your eyes. 
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If you{+} are on my side, and if you{+} will listen to my voice, take{+} the heads of the men your{+} master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up. 
And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew them, even seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him to Jezreel. 
And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay{+} them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning. 
And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, You{+} are righteous: look, I conspired against my master, and slew him; but who struck all these? 
Now know that nothing will fall to the earth of the word of Yahweh, which Yahweh spoke concerning the house of Ahab: for Yahweh has done that which he spoke by his slave Elijah. 
So Jehu struck all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and those who he knew well, and his priests, until he left him none remaining. 
And he arose and departed, and went to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing-house of the shepherds in the way, 
Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are you{+}? And they answered, We are the brothers of Ahaziah: and we go down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen. 
And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing-house, even two and forty men; neither did he leave any of them. 
And when he had departed from there, he found Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he greeted him, and said to him, Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it is, give me your hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. 
And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for Yahweh. So they made him ride in his chariot. 
And when he came to Samaria, he struck all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had destroyed him, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke to Elijah. 
And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu will serve him much. 
Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice [to do] to Baal; whoever will be wanting, he will not live. But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshipers of Baal. 
And Jehu said, Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it. 
And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that didn't come. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was filled from one end to another. 
And he said to him who was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshipers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments. 
And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal; and he said to the worshipers of Baal, Search and look, in case there are here with you{+} any of the slaves of Yahweh, but only the worshipers of Baal themselves [should be here]. 
And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt-offerings. Now Jehu had appointed himself eighty men outside, and said, If any of the men whom I bring into your{+} hands escape, [he who lets him go], his life will be for the life of him. 
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt-offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they struck them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the citadel of the house of Baal. 
And they brought forth the pillars that were in the house of Baal, and burned them. 
And they broke down the pillar of Baal, and broke down the house of Baal, and made it an outside latrine, to this day. 
Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel. 
Nevertheless from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin, Jehu didn't depart from after them, [to wit], the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan. 
And Yahweh said to Jehu, Because you have done well in executing that which is right in my eyes, [and] have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel. 
But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of Yahweh, the God of Israel, with all his heart: he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin. 
In those days Yahweh began to cut off from Israel: and Hazael struck them in all the borders of Israel; 
from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the valley of the Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan. 
Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 
And Jehu slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead. 
And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.
