Então David perguntou ao Senhor: Deverei voltar para Judá? O Senhor respondeu-lhe: Sim.Para que cidade devo ir? E o Senhor respondeu: Para Hebrom. 
David e as suas mulheres - Ainoã de Jezreel e Abigail, a viúva de Nabal, do Carmelo - mais os seus homens com as respectivas famílias, todos vieram para Hebrom. Os líderes de Judá vieram dar-lhe as boas vindas e coroaram-no rei sobre o povo de Judá o saber que os homens de Jabes-Gileade tinham tido o cuidado de fazer o enterro de Saul, mandou-lhes uma mensagem: Que o Senhor vos abençoe por terem honrado dessa maneira a memória do vosso rei, fazendo-lhe um funeral com dignidade. Que o Senhor vos proteja na sua fidelidade e vos recompense! Eu também vos retribuirei o bem que praticaram. Agora peço-vos que aceitem ser meus súbditos, fortes e fiéis, visto que Saul já está morto. Também a tribo de Judá já me designou como seu rei. 
No entanto Abner, comandante das tropas de Saul, foi a Maanaim para fazer de Isbosete rei. O seu território era Gileade, Asuri, Jezreel, Efraim, a tribo de Benjamim e todo o resto de Israel. Isbosete tinha quarenta anos nessa altura. Reinou assim em Maanaim por dois anos; entretanto David reinava em Hebrom, e durante sete anos e meio foi rei do povo de Judá. 
Um dia o general Abner levou as tropas de Isbosete de Maanaim até Gibeão, e Joabe (filho de Zeruía), general das tropas de David, levou estas ao encontro das primeiras. Ficaram frente a frente junto ao poço de Gibeão, uns do lado de cá do tanque, e os outros do lado oposto. Abner sugeriu a Joabe o seguinte: Vamos pôr alguns dos nossos moços a defrontarem-se à espada à nossa frente!, e Joabe acedeu. Foram assim escolhidos doze combatentes de cada lado, para se confrontarem mortalmente. 
O combate começou e cada um, pegando na cabeça do outro pelos cabelos mergulhou a espada no corpo do outro, matando-o; e assim acabaram por morrer todos. Aquele lugar ficou conhecido como o Campo das Espadas. 
Os dois exércitos começaram então a luta. Chegando ao fim do dia, Abner e os seus homens tinham sido derrotados por Joabe. Abisai e Asael - irmãos de Joabe - também se encontravam na batalha. Asael era um grande corredor, corria como uma gazela, e foi em perseguição de Abner, correndo sem descanso, absolutamente determinado a apanhá-lo. 
A certa altura Abner olhou para trás, viu-o e perguntou-lhe: Tu és Asael? Sim, sou. 
Aviso-te de que não venhas atrás de mim. Vai antes em perseguição dum soldado qualquer e fica com os despojos. Mas Asael recusou e continuou no seu encalço bner tornou a gritar-lhe: Sai de trás de mim! Eu nunca mais poderia aparecer ao teu irmão Joabe, se te matasse! 
Mas Asael recusou-se a desistir. Então Abner trespassou-lhe o ventre com a extremidade mais grossa da sua lança; esta saiu-lhe pelo outro lado do corpo. Asael ficou-se logo ali estendido, morto; toda a gente que ia passando parava a ver o corpo. 
Joabe e Abisai puseram-se por sua vez em perseguição de Abner. Estava já o Sol a pôr-se quando chegaram ao outeiro de Amá, em frente de Giá, no caminho para o deserto de Gibeão. As tropas de Abner, formadas por contingentes de soldados de Benjamim, reagruparam-se no cimo da colina. Dali Abner gritou para Joabe, em baixo: Será que as nossas tropas hão-de continuar a matar-se umas às outras? Quando é que pensas dizer à tua gente que deixe de perseguir os irmãos? 
Garanto-te, diante de Deus, que mesmo que não tivesses falado, as minhas tropas teriam ido para casa já desde amanhã, respondeu-lhe Joabe. Tocou então a trombeta e os seus homens pararam de correr atrás das tropas de Israel. 
Nessa noite, Abner e os seus soldados retiraram-se através da planície do Jordão; atravessaram o rio, andaram toda a manhã seguinte, até que chegaram a Maanaim. 
As tropas de Joabe também se retiraram para a sua terra. Quando contaram as baixas verificaram que tinham perdido apenas dezanove homens, além de Asael; e que da parte de Abner tinha havido trezentas e sessenta perdas, todos da tribo de Benjamim. 
Os soldados de Joabe levaram o corpo de Asael para Belém e enterraram-no na sepultura do seu pai; depois marcharam a noite inteira e chegaram a Hebrom ao romper do dia. 

And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Yahweh said to him, Go up. And David said, Where shall I go up? And he said, To Hebron. 
So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 
And his men who were with him David brought up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 
And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were those who buried Saul. 
And David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said to them, Blessed be you{+} of Yahweh, that you{+} have shown this kindness to your{+} lord, even to Saul, and have buried him. 
And now Yahweh show loving-kindness and truth to you{+}: and I also will requite you{+} this kindness, because you{+} have done this thing. 
Now therefore let your{+} hands be strong, and be{+} valiant; for Saul your{+} lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them. 
Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, had taken Ishbaal the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; 
and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 
Ishbaal, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 
And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. 
And Abner the son of Ner, and the slaves of Ishbaal the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 
And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the slaves of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 
And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray you, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 
Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ishbaal the son of Saul, and twelve of the slaves of David. 
And they caught every one his fellow man by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow man's side; so they fell down together: therefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. 
And the battle was very intense that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the slaves of David. 
And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 
And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn't turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 
Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it you, Asahel? And he answered, It is I. 
And Abner said to him, Turn yourself aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay yourself hold on one of the young men, and take yourself his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 
And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn yourself aside from following me: why should I strike you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother? 
Nevertheless he refused to turn aside: therefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still. 
But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. 
And the sons of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. 
Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Will the sword devour forever? Don't you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you bid the people return from following their brothers? 
And Joab said, As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother. 
So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither did they fight anymore. 
And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim. 
And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's slaves nineteen men and Asahel. 
But the slaves of David had struck of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died. 
And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
