Then a certain lawyer stood up to test him, and said, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit life eternal?"
He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"
He answered, " 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself.'
Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this and you will live."
But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Jesus rejoined, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and went away leaving him half dead.
By chance a certain priest was going down that road. When he saw him, he went by on the other side.
In the same way a Levite came to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side.
But a certain Samaritan as he traveled came near him, and saw him and pitied him,
and went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on them oil and wine. Then placing him on his own beast he took him to the inn and cared for him.
The next morning he took out two shillings and gave them to the inn-keeper and said, 'Care for him, and what evermore you spend, I will pay in full when I come back.'
Which of these three seems to you to have become neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?"
He said, "He who did kindness to him." Jesus said to him, "Go and act in the same way yourself."
