Und siehe! ein Mann Gottes kam von Juda auf das Wort Jehova's nach Bethel, während Jerobeam am Altare stand, um zu räuchern. 
Und er rief gegen den Altar auf das Wort Jehova's, und sprach: Altar! Altar! so spricht Jehova: Siehe! ein Sohn wird geboren dem Hause Davids, Josia wird sein Name seyn, und er wird opfern auf dir die Priester der Höhen, die auf dir räuchern, und Menschengebeine wird man auf dir verbrennen. 
Und er gab an demselben Tage ein Zeichen, und sprach: Das ist das Zeichen, das Jehova geredet hat: Siehe! der Altar wird zerreißen, und die Asche, welche auf ihm ist, wird verschüttet werden. 
Und es geschah, als der König die Rede des Mannes Gottes hörte, die er gegen den Altar ausrief zu Bethel, streckte Jerobeam seine Hand aus vom Altare her, und sprach: Greifet ihn! Da erstarrte seine Hand, die er wider ihn ausgestreckt hatte, und er konnte sie nicht wieder zu sich ziehen. 
Und der Altar zerriß, und die Asche wurde verschüttet vom Altare, nach dem Wunderzeichen, welches der Mann Gottes gegeben hatte auf das Wort Jehova's. 
Und der König begann und sprach zu dem Manne Gottes: Flehe doch zu Jehova, deinem Gott, und bitte für mich, daß meine Hand sich wieder an mich ziehe. Und es flehete der Mann Gottes zu Jehova, und die Hand des Königs zog sich wieder an ihn, und sie war wie zuvor. 
Und der König sagte zu dem Manne Gottes: Komme mit mir in's Haus, und labe dich, ich will dir ein Geschenk geben. 
Und der Mann Gottes sprach zum Könige: Wenn du mir auch die Hälfte deines Hauses gäbest; so würde ich nicht mit dir gehen, und weder Brod essen, noch Wasser trinken an diesem Orte. 
Denn mir ist also geboten worden durch das Wort Jehova's, indem er sprach: Du sollst kein Brod essen, und kein Wasser trinken, und nicht zurückkehren auf dem Wege, den du gegangen bist. 
Und er ging einen andern Weg, und kehrte nicht auf dem Wege zurück, auf dem er nach Bethel gekommen war. 
Und es wohnte ein alter Prophet zu Bethel; und es kamen seine Söhne, und erzählten ihm Alles, was der Mann Gottes an demselben Tage zu Bethel gethan hatte; und die Worte, welche er zu dem König gesagt hatte, erzählten sie ihrem Vater. 
Da sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Welchen Weg ist er gegangen? Und seine Söhne hatten den Weg gesehen, welchen der Mann Gottes ging, als er von Juda kam. 
Und er sprach zu seinen Söhnen: Gürtet mir den Esel! Und sie gürteten ihm den Esel, und er setzte sich darauf; 
und zog dem Manne Gottes nach, und fand ihn sitzen unter einer Terebinthe, und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Mann Gottes, der von Juda gekommen? Und er sprach: Ich bin's. 
Da sprach er zu ihm: Komme mit mir nach Hause, und iß Brod! 
Aber er sprach zu ihm: Ich kann nicht mit dir umkehren, und mit dir gehen, und ich werde kein Brod essen, und kein Wasser bei dir trinken an diesem Orte; 
denn durch das Wort Jehova's ist der Ausspruch an mich ergangen: Du sollst kein Brod essen, und kein Wasser daselbst trinken; du sollst nicht zurückkehren auf dem Wege, den du gegangen bist. 
Und er sprach zu ihm: Auch ich bin ein Prophet, wie du; und ein Engel hat zu mir geredet durch das Wort Jehova's, und gesprochen: Hole ihn wieder zurück in dein Haus, daß er Brod esse, und Wasser trinke. Er belog ihn. 
Da kehrte er mit ihm zurück, und aß Brod in seinem Hause und trank Wasser. 
Und es geschah, als sie zu Tische saßen, da erging der Ausspruch Jehova's an den Propheten, der ihn zurückgeholt hatte; 
und er rief dem Manne Gottes zu, der aus Juda gekommen war, und sprach: So spricht Jehova: Darum, weil du widerspenstig gewesen bist wider den Ausspruch Jehova's, und nicht gehalten hast das Gebot, welches dir Jehova, dein Gott, geboten; 
sondern umgekehret bist, und Brod gegessen, und Wasser getrunken hast an dem Orte, wovon er zu dir sagte: Du sollst kein Brod essen, und kein Wasser trinken; so soll dein Leichnam nicht kommen in das Grab deiner Väter. 
Und es geschah, nachdem er gegessen und getrunken hatte; gürtete er ihm den Esel, nämlich dem Propheten, den er zurückgeholt hatte. 
Und er zog fort, und ein Löwe traf ihn auf dem Wege, und tödtete ihn; und sein Leichnam lag hingeworfen auf dem Wege, und der Esel stand neben ihm, und der Löwe stand neben dem Leichnam. 
Und siehe! Leute, die vorübergingen, sahen den Leichnam auf dem Wege hingeworfen, und den Löwen bei dem Leichnam stehen; und kamen und sagten es in der Stadt, worin der alte Prophet wohnte. 
Als der Prophet, der ihn zurückgeholt hatte vom Wege, das hörte, sprach er: Dieß ist der Mann Gottes, der widerspenstig gewesen wider den Ausspruch Jehova's; darum hat ihn Jehova dem Löwen preisgegeben, der hat ihn zerrissen und getödtet, nach dem Worte Jehova's, das er zu ihm geredet. 
Und er redete zu seinen Söhnen und sprach: Gürtet mir den Esel! Und sie gürteten ihn. 
Und er zog hin, und fand seinen Leichnam auf dem Wege hingeworfen, und den Esel, und den Löwen neben dem Leichnam stehen; der Löwe hatte den Leichnam nicht gefressen, und den Esel nicht zerrissen. 
Da hob der Prophet den Leichnam des Mannes Gottes auf, und legte ihn auf den Esel, und führte ihn zurück, und kam in die Stadt des alten Propheten, um ihn zu beklagen, und zu begraben. 
Und er legte seinen Leichnam in sein Grab; und sie beklagten ihn (und sagten): Ach, mein Bruder! 
Und es geschah, nachdem er ihn begraben hatte, da sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Wenn ich sterbe, so begrabet mich in das Grab, worin der Mann Gottes begraben ist; neben seine Gebeine leget meine Gebeine. 
Denn gewiß wird geschehen der Ausspruch Jehova's, den er ausgerufen hat wider den Altar zu Bethel, und wider alle Häuser der Höhen, die in den Städten Samariens sind. 
Nach diesem kehrte Jerobeam nicht zurück von seinem bösen Wege, sondern machte wieder aus dem ganzen Volke Priester der Höhen. Wer Lust hatte, dem füllte er die Hand, und der wurde Priester der Höhen. 
Und dieses wurde zur Sünde für das Haus Jerobeams, und zur Vertilgung und Ausrottung von der Oberfläche der Erde. 

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of Jehovah unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam was standing by the altar to burn incense. 2 And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall they burn upon thee. 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4 And it came to pass, when the king heard the saying of the man of God, which he cried against the altar in Beth-el, that Jeroboam put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not draw it back again to him. 5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of Jehovah. 6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the favor of Jehovah thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God entreated Jehovah, and the king’s hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. 7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thy house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place; 9 for so was it charged me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Thou shalt eat no bread, nor drink water, neither return by the way that thou camest. 10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el. 
Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and one of his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them also they told unto their father. 12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? Now his sons had seen what way the man of God went, that came from Judah. 13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass; and he rode thereon. 14 And he went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak; and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee; neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17 for it was said to me by the word of Jehovah, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 18 And he said unto him, I also am a prophet as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of Jehovah, saying, Bring him back with thee into thy house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. 
And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of Jehovah came unto the prophet that brought him back; 21 and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee, 22 but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. 23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body. 25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the body cast in the way, and the lion standing by the body; and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 
And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah: therefore Jehovah hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake unto him. 27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled it. 28 And he went and found his body cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the body: the lion had not eaten the body, nor torn the ass. 29 And the prophet took up the body of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back; and he came to the city of the old prophet, to mourn, and to bury him. 30 And he laid his body in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones. 32 For the saying which he cried by the word of Jehovah against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass. 
After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again from among all the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, that there might be priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
