Es geschah nach vielen Tagen, da erging der Ausspruch Jehova's an Elia, im driten Jahre, indem er sprach: Gehe hin, zeige dich Ahab! und ich will Regen geben auf die Oberfläche der Erde. 
Und Elia ging, sich Ahab zu zeigen. Und die Hungersnoth war heftig in samarien. 
Und Ahab rief Obadja, der die Aufsicht hatte über das Haus; und Obadja fürchtete Jehova sehr. 
Denn es geschah, als Isebel die Propheten Jehova's ausrottete, da nahm Obadja hundert Propheten, und versteckte je fünfzig Mann in eine Höhle, und versorgte sie mit Brod und Wasser. 
Und Ahab sprach zu Obadja: Gehe durch's Land zu allen Wasserquellen, und an alle Bäche! Vielleicht finden wir Gras, daß wir die Rosse und die Maulthiere am Leben erhalten, und nichts umkommen lassen vom Viehe. 
Und sie theilten unter sich das Land, um es zu durchwandern. Ahab ging auf dem einen Wege allein, und Obadja ging allein auf dem andern Wege. 
Als Obadja auf dem Wege war, siehe! da kam ihm Elia entgegen; und als er ihn erkannte, fiel er auf sein Angesicht, und sprach: Bist du es, mein Herr Elia? 
Und er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin's! Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe! Elia ist da. 
Und er sprach: Was habe ich gesündiget, daß du deinen Knecht in die Hand Ahabs geben willst, daß er mich tödte? 
So wahr Jehova, dein Gott, lebt! es ist kein Volk, noch Königreich, wohin mein Herr nicht gesandt hast, um dich zu suchen; und wenn man sprach: Er ist nicht da! so ließ er das Königreich und das Volk schwören, daß man dich nicht finde. 
Und nun sprichst du: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe! Elia ist da. 
Wenn ich nun hinginge von dir, und der Geist Jehova's trüge dich hinweg, daß ich nicht wüßte wohin? und ich wäre gekommen, es Ahab zu sagen, und er fände dich nicht; so würde er mich erwürgen. Und dein Knecht fürchtet Jehova von Jugend auf. 
Ist es meinem Herrn nicht gesagt worden, was ich gethan habe, als Isebel die Propheten Jehova's erwürgte? Da versteckte ich von den Propheten Jehova's hundert Mann, je fünfzig in eine Höhle, und versorgte sie mit Brod und Wasser. 
Und nun sprichst du: Gehe hin, sage deinem Herrn: Siehe! Elia ist da. Da wird er mich erwürgen. 
Aber Elia sprach: So wahr Jehova, der Herr des Weltalls, lebt, vor dessen Angesicht ich stehe! heute will ich mich ihm zeigen. 
Da ging Obadja hin, Ahab entgegen, und sagte es ihm. Und Ahab ging Elia entgegen. 
Und es geschah, als Ahab Elia sah, sprach Ahab zu ihm: Bist du es, der Israel in solches Unglück bringt? 
Er aber sprach: Ich habe Israel nicht in's Unglück gebracht, sondern du und das Haus deines Vaters, weil ihr verlassen habet die Gebote Jehova's, und du den Baalim nachgegangen bist. 
So sende nun hin, und sammle zu mir ganz Israel an den Berg Karmel, und die vier hundert fünfzig Propheten Baals, und die vierhundert Propheten des Haines, die am Tische der Isebel essen. 
Da sandte Ahab hin unter alle Söhne Israels, und versammelte die Propheten an dem Berg Karmel. 
Und Elia trat zum ganzen Volke, und sprach: Wie lange wollet ihr hinken auf beiden Seiten? Ist Jehova Gott, so wandelt ihm nach; ist es aber Baal, so wandelt diesem nach. Aber das Volk antwortete ihm kein Wort. 
Und Elia sprach zum Volke: Ich bin allein übrig geblieben ein Prophet Jehova's; aber der Propheten des Baal sind vier hundert und fünfzig Mann. 
So gebe man uns nun zwei junge Stiere, da sollen sie sich einen jungen Stier auslesen, und ihn zerstücken, und auf's Holz legen; aber Feuer sollen sie nicht daran legen; und ich will den andern Stier zurichten, und auf's Holz legen, aber Feuer will ich nicht daran legen. 
Dann sollet ihr den Namen eures Gottes anrufen; und ich will den Namen Jehova's anrufen. Und welcher Gott nun mit Feuer antworten wird, der soll Gott seyn. Und das ganze Volk antwortete, und sprach: Die Rede ist gut. 
Da sprach Elia zu den Propheten des Baal: Wählet euch einen Stier, und richtet ihn zuerst zu, denn eurer sind viele, und rufet den Namen eures Gottes an; aber Feuer leget nicht daran. 
Also nahmen sie einen Stier, den man ihnen gab, und richteten ihn zu, und riefen an den Namen des Baal vom Morgen bis zum Mittage, und sprachen: Baal, erhöre uns! Aber da war keine Stimme, noch Jemand, der antwortete. Und sie hinkten um den Altar, den er gemacht hatte. 
Da es nun Mittag war, spottete ihrer Elia, und sprach: Rufet mit lauter Stimme! er ist ja Gott; er könnte ja in tiefem Nachdenken seyn, oder in Geschäften, oder auf der Reise; vielleicht schläft er, und muß erst erwachen. 
Und sie riefen mit lauter Stimme, und ritzten sich nach ihrer Weise die Haut auf mit Messern, und mit Pfriemen, bis sie Blut an sich vergoßen. 
Und es geschah, als der Mittag vorbei war, sangen sie begeisterte Lieder bis zu der Zeit, da das Opfer gebracht wird. Aber da war keine Stimme, noch Jemand, der antwortete, noch ein Aufmerken. 
Da sprach Elia zu dem ganzen Volke: Tretet her zu mir! Und das ganze Volk trat zu ihm. Und er bauete den Altar Jehova's wieder auf, der zerstöret war. 
Und Elia nahm zwölf Steine, nach der Zahl der Stämme der Söhne Jakobs, an welchen der Ausspruch Jehova's geschehen war, indem er sprach: Israel soll dein Name seyn. 
Und er bauete aus diesen Steinen einen Altar im Namen Jehova's und machte einen Graben, welcher zwei Maß Saat fassen konnte, rings um den Altar. 
Und er richtete das Holz zu, und zerstückte den Stier, und legte ihn auf das Holz; 
und sprach: Füllet vier Krüge mit Wasser, und gießet es auf das Brandopfer, und auf das Holz! Und er sprach: Thut's noch einmal! und sie thaten es noch einmal. Und er sprach: Thut's zum dritten Male! und sie thaten es zum dritten Male. 
Und das Wasser lief rings um den Altar her, und auch der Graben wurde voll Wassers. 
Und es geschah zu der Zeit, wo das Opfer gebracht wird, da trat Elia, der Prophet, hinzu, und sprach: Jehova, du Gott Abrahams, Isaaks, und Israels! heute laß kund werden, daß du Gott in Israel bist, und ich dein Diener, und daß ich nach deinen Worten alle diese Dinge gethan habe. 
Erhöre mich, Jehova! erhöre mich, damit dieses Volk erkenne, daß du, Jehova! Gott bist, und wende ihre Herzen rückwärts. 
Und es fiel Feuer Jehova's herab, und verzehrte das Brandopfer, und das Holz, und die Steine, und die Erde; und das Wasser, welches im Graben war, leckte es auf. 
Als dieß Alles das Volk sah, fielen sie nieder auf ihr Angesicht, und sprachen: Jehova ist Gott, Jehova ist Gott! 
Und Elia sprach zu ihnen: Greifet die Propheten des Baal, daß Keiner von ihnen entrinne. Und sie ergriffen sie. Und Elia ließ sie hinabführen an den Bach Kischon, und schlachtete sie daselbst. 
Und Elia sprach zu Ahab: Gehe hinauf, iß und trink! denn ich höre das Geräusch eines Regens. 
Und Ahab ging hinauf, zu essen und zu trinken. Und Elia stieg auf die Spitze des Karmel, und bückte sich zur Erde, und legte sein Angesicht zwischen seine Knie; 
und sprach zu seinem Knechte: Gehe hinauf, und schaue hin nach dem Meere! Und er ging hinauf, und schauete hin, und sprach: Es ist nichts da. Und er sprach: Gehe wieder hin, siebenmal! 
Und es geschah beim siebenten Male, da sprach er: Siehe! eine kleine Wolke, wie die Hand eines Mannes, steigt aus dem Meere. Da sprach er: Gehe hin, und sage zu Ahab: Spanne an, und fahre hinab, daß dich der Regen nicht überfalle. 
Und es geschah während dessen wurde der Himmel schwarz von Wolken und Wind, und es kam ein großer Regen. Und Ahab fuhr fort, und kam nach Jisreel. 
Und es kam die Hand Jehova's über Elia, und er gürtete seine Lenden, und lief vor Ahab her, bis nach Jisreel. 

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. 2 And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly: 4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself. 
And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9 And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day. 
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table. 
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under. 24 And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. 
And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under. 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. 
And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name. 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood. 34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening  oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God. 40 and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. 
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel: 46 and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

(Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly: 4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself. 
And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9 And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day. 
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table. 
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under. 24 And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. 
And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under. 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. 
And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name. 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood. 34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening  oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God. 40 and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. 
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel: 46 and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
