1 Und es kamen die Siphiter zu Saul nach Gibea, und sprachen: Ist nicht David verborgen auf dem Hügel Hachila vor der Wüste?

2 Da brach Saul auf, und zog hinab in die Wüste Siph, und mit ihm drei tausend Mann, Auserlesene aus Israel, um David in der Wüste Siph aufzusuchen.

3 Und Saul lagerte sich auf dem Hügel Hachila, welcher vor der Wüste am Wege liegt; und David hielt sich in der Wüste auf. Da er aber sah, daß Saul ihm in die Wüste nachzog,

4 sandte er Kundschafter aus, und erfuhr, daß Saul wirklich gekommen sey.

5 Und David machte sich auf, und ging an den Ort, wohin Saul sich gelagert hatte. Als David die Stelle sah, wo Saul lag, und Abner, der Sohn Ners, sein Feldherr, und Saul lag in der Wagenburg, und das Volk hatte sich um ihn herumgelagert,

6 da fing David an, zu reden, und sprach zu Ahimelech, dem Hethiter, und zu Abischai, dem Sohne Zeruja's, dem Bruder Joabs, und sagte: Wer will mit mir zu Saul in's Lager hinabgehen? Und Abischai sprach: Ich will mit dir hinabgehen.

7 Also gingen David und Abischai des Nachts zum Volke; und siehe! Saul lag schlafend in der Wagenburg, und sein Spieß stack zu seinem Haupte in der Erde; und Abner, und das Volk lagen um ihn herum.

8 Da sprach Abischai zu David: Jetzt hat Gott deinen Feind dir in die Hand geliefert; ich will ihn also mit dem Spieße durchstoßen bis in die Erde mit Einem Stoße, und ihm keinen zweiten geben.

9 Aber David sprach zu Abischai: Du sollst ihn nicht tödten; denn wer hat seine Hand gelegt an den gesalbten Jehova's, und ist ungestraft geblieben?

10 Und David sprach: So wahr Jehova lebt, nein! Jehova wird ihn schlagen, entweder wird sein Tag kommen, daß er stirbt, oder er wird in den Streit ziehen, und weggerafft werden.

11 Ferne laß es Jehova von mir seyn, meine Hand zu legen an den Gesalbten Jehova's! Nimm also nur den Spieß, der zu seinem Haupte steckt, und die Wasserschale, und laß uns gehen!

12 Und David nahm den Spieß, und die Wasserschale bei dem Haupte Sauls, und sie gingen fort, und Niemand sah es, und Niemand merkte es, und Niemand wachte auf, sondern Alle schliefen, denn tiefer Schlaf Jehova's war auf sie gefallen.

13 Und David ging hinüber jenseits, und stellte sich auf die Spitze des Berges von Ferne, ein weiter Raum war zwischen ihnen.

14 Da rief David zu dem Volke, und zu Abner, dem Sohne Ners, und sprach: Antwortest du nicht, Abner? Und Abner antwortete und sprach: Wer bist du, der dem Könige zurufet?

15 Und David sprach zu Abner: Bist du nicht ein Mann? Und wer ist wie du in Israel? Warum nun hast du deinen Herrn, den König, nicht bewachet? denn es ist Einer vom Volke hingekommen, den König, deinen Herrn, umzubringen.

16 Das ist nicht gut, was du gethan, so wahr Jehova lebt! Söhne des Todes seyd ihr, daß ihr euren Herrn, den Gesalbten Jehova's, nicht bewacht habet! So sehe nun nach, wo der Spieß des Königs ist, und die Wasserschale, die zu seinem Haupte standen.

17 Da erkannte Saul die Stimme Davids, und sprach: Ist das deine Stimme, mein Sohn David? und David sprach: Meine Stimme ist's, mein Herr, König!

18 Und er sprach: Warum doch verfolget mein Herr seinen Knecht? Was habe ich gethan? Was ist Böses in meiner Hand?

19 So möge doch nun mein Herr, der König, hören die Worte seines Knechtes. Wenn Jehova dich gegen mich reizet, so möge er Speiseopfer riechen; wenn es aber Menschensöhne sind, so seyen sie verflucht vor Jehova, weil sie mich heute vertreiben, daß ich nicht mehr an's Erbland Jehova's mich anschließen kann, und sprechen: Gehe, diene andern Göttern!

20 So möge nun mein Blut nicht zur Erde fallen, fern vom Angesichte Jehova's! denn der König von Israel zieht aus, einen einzigen Floh zu suchen, wie man nach einem Rebhuhn jaget auf den Bergen.

21 Und Saul sprach: Ich habe gesündiget, kehre zurück, mein Sohn David! ich will dir nichts mehr zu Leide thun; weil mein Leben heute teuer gewesen ist in deinen Augen. Siehe! ich habe thöricht gehandelt, und mich sehr geirret.

22 Da antwortete David und sprach: Hier ist der Spieß des Königs! es komme einer von den Knaben herüber, und hole ihn.

23 Und Jehova wird Jedem nach seiner Gerechtigkeit, und nach seiner Redlichkeit vergelten, da dich Jehova heute in meine Hand gab, und ich meine Hand nicht legen wollte an den Gesalbten Jehova's.

24 Und siehe! wie heute dein Leben groß war in meinen Augen; so wird auch mein Leben groß seyn in den Augen Jehova's, daß er mich aus jeder Not erretten wird.

25 Und Saul sprach zu David: Gesegnet seyest du, mein Sohn David! gewiß! du wirst es thun, gewiß! du wirst obsiegen. Dann ging David seines Weges, und Saul kehrte zurück an seinen Ort.

1 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert? 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 3 And Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. 4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come of a certainty. 5 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had encamped; and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay within the place of the wagons, and the people were encamped round about him.

6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee. 7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay round about him. 8 Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered up thine enemy into thy hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time. 9 And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not; for who can put forth his hand against Jehovah’s anointed, and be guiltless? 10 And David said, As Jehovah liveth, Jehovah will smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. 11 Jehovah forbid that I should put forth my hand against Jehovah’s anointed: but now take, I pray thee, the spear that is at his head, and the cruse of water, and let us go. 12 So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s head; and they gat them away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from Jehovah was fallen upon them.

13 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them; 14 and David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? 15 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept watch over thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord. 16 This thing is not good that thou hast done. As Jehovah liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept watch over your lord, Jehovah’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his head.

17 And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king. 18 And he said, Wherefore doth my lord pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand? 19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be Jehovah that hath stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before Jehovah; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of Jehovah, saying, Go, serve other gods. 20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of Jehovah: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David; for I will no more do thee harm, because my life was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. 22 And David answered and said, Behold the spear, O king! let then one of the young men come over and fetch it. 23 And Jehovah will render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; forasmuch as Jehovah delivered thee into my hand to-day, and I would not put forth my hand against Jehovah’s anointed. 24 And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of Jehovah, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation. 25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do mightily, and shalt surely prevail. So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
