Und es war die Lade Jehova's im Lande der Philister sieben Monate. 
Und es riefen die Philister die Priester und die Wahrsager, und sprachen: Was sollen wir thun mit der Lade Jehova's? Thut uns zu wissen, womit wir sie an ihren Ort zurücksenden sollen? 
Und sie sprachen: wenn ihr die Lade des Gottes Israels zurücksendet, so sendet sie nicht leer zurück; sondern erstattet ihm ein Schuldopfer, dann werdet ihr geheilet werden, und erfahren, warum seine Hand von euch nicht ablässet. 
Und sie sprachen: Welches ist das Schuldopfer, das wir ihm erstatten sollen? Und sie sprachen: Nach der Zahl der Fürsten der Philister, fünf goldene Beulen, und fünf goldene Mäuse; denn ihr Alle, sammt euren Fürsten, habet Eine Plage. 
Machet also Abbildungen von euren Beulen, und Abbildungen von euren Mäusen, die das Land verheeren, und gebet dem Gott Israels die Ehre; vielleicht macht er seine Hand leicht auf euch, und auf eurem Gott, und auf eurem Lande. 
Denn warum wollet ihr euer Herz verhärten, wie die Aegypter, und Pharao ihr Herz verhärteten? Nicht wahr, als er gegen sie Thaten ausführte, da entließen sie dieselben, und sie gingen? 
So nehmet jetzt und machet einen neuen Wagen, und zwei säugende Kühe, auf die noch kein Joch gekommen ist, und spannet die Kühe an den Wagen, und führet ihre Kälber von ihnen weg nach Hause. 
Und nehmet die Lade Jehova's, und setzet sie auf den Wagen, und leget die goldenen Geräthe, die ihr ihm als Schuldopfer erstattet, in ein Kästchen an ihre Seite, und schicket ihn fort, daß er gehe. 
Und sehet: Wenn er den Weg nach ihrem Gebiete auf Bethschemesch zu gehet, so hat er uns dieses große Uebel gethan; wenn aber nicht, so erkennen wir, daß nicht seine Hand uns geschlagen hat, sondern ein Zufall uns begegnet ist. 
Die Leute machten es nun so. Sie nahmen nämlich zwei säugende Kühe, und spannten sie an den Wagen, und ihre Kälber behielten sie zu Hause. 
Und sie setzten die Lade Jehova's auf den Wagen, sammt dem Kästchen mit den goldenen Mäusen, und den Abbildungen ihrer Beulen. 
Da nahmen die Kühe den geraden Weg nach Bethschemesch, gingen auf Einer Straße immer fort, und brülleten, und wichen nicht weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken an; und die Fürsten der Philister gingen hinter ihnen her, bis an die Grenze von Bethschemesch. 
Und die Bethschemiter schnitten den Weizen im Thale, Und sie erhoben ihre Augen, und sahen die Lade, und freueten sich, sie zu sehen. 
Und der Wagen kam auf das Feld Josua's, des Bethschemiters, und blieb daselbst stehen. Und daselbst war ein großer Stein, und sie spalteten das Holz des Wagens, und opferten die Kühe als Brandopfer Jehova. 
Und die Leviten nahmen die Lade Jehova's herab, und das Kästchen, das daneben war, worin die goldenen Geräthe waren, und setzten sie auf den großen Stein. Und die Leute von Bethschemesch brachten Jehova an demselben Tage Brandopfer, und opferten Schlachtopfer. 
Und die fünf Fürsten der Philister sahen zu, und kehrten denselben Tag nach Ekron zurück. 
Und dieses sind die goldenen Beulen, welche die Philister Jehova zum Schuldopfer erstatteten: Für Asdod eine, für Gaza eine, für Askalon eine, für Gath eine, und für Ekron eine. 
Und die goldenen Mäuse waren nach der Zahl aller Städte der Philister unter den fünf Fürsten, von der festen Stadt bis zum Dorfe des flachen Landes, und bis zu dem großen Abel (d. i. Trauer), worauf sie die Lade Jehova's stellten, und welcher bis auf diesen Tag auf dem Felde Josua's, des Bethschemiters, ist. 
Und er schlug die Leute von Bethschemesch, weil sie die Lade Jehova's angesehen hatten; und er schlug unter dem Volke fünfzig tausend und siebenzig Mann. Und das Volk trauerte, daß der Herr auf das Volk einen so großen Schlag gethan hatte. 
Und die Leute von Bethschemesch sprachen: Wer kann bestehen vor Jehova, diesem heiligen Gott? und zu wem soll sie von uns gehen? 
Und sie sandten Boten zu den Einwohnern von Kirjath-Jearim, und sprachen: Die Philister haben die Lade Jehova's zurückgebracht; kommet herab, und holet sie zu euch hinauf! 

And the ark of Jehovah was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? show us wherewith we shall send it to its place. 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but by all means return him a trespass-offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass-offering which we shall return to him? And they said, Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? 7 Now therefore take and prepare you a new cart, and two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke; and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them; 8 and take the ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass-offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. 9 And see; if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us. 
And the men did so, and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home; 11 and they put the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors. 12 And the kine took the straight way by the way to Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. 13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine for a burnt-offering unto Jehovah. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto Jehovah. 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. 
And these are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass-offering unto Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18 and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even unto the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of Jehovah, which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite. 
And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, and fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter. 20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us? 21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought back the ark of Jehovah; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
