1 Und es weissagten Haggai, der Prophet, und Zacharias, der Sohn Iddo's, der Prophet, zu den Juden, die in Juda und Jerusalem waren, im Namen des Gottes Israels zu ihnen.

2 Alsdann machten sich auf Serubabel, der Sohn Schealthiels, und Jeschua, der Sohn Jozadaks, und fingen an zu bauen das Haus Gottes, welches zu Jerusalem ist, und mit ihnen die Propheten Gottes, welche sie unterstützten.

3 Zu derselben Zeit kamen zu ihnen Thathnai, der Statthalter diesseits des Stromes, und Schetharbosnai, und ihre Amtsgenossen, und sprachen also zu ihnen: Wer hat euch Befehl gegeben, diese Haus zu bauen, und diese Mauer wieder herzustellen?

4 Alsdann sagten wir ihnen, welches die Namen der Männer wären, welche diesen Bau baueten.

5 Aber das Auge ihres Gottes war auf die Aeltesten der Juden gerichtet, so daß man sie nicht abhielt, bis die Sache an Darius käme, und man eine Antwort darüber zurücksende.

6 Abschrift des Briefes, welchen Thathnai , der Statthalter diesseits des Stromes, und Schetharbosnai, und ihre Amtsgenossen, die Apharsäer, welche diesseits des Stromes waren, an Darius, den König, sendeten.

7 Sie sendeten den Brief an ihn, und darin war also geschrieben: Darius, dem Könige, alles Heil!

8 Kund sey dem Könige, daß wir in das Land Juda gingen zu dem Hause des großen Gottes. Dasselbe wird gebauet mit großen Steinen, und Holz wird in die Wände gelegt; und das Werk wird eifrig betrieben, und schreitet unter ihren Händen voran.

9 Wir fragten deßhalb jene Aeltesten, und sprachen also zu ihnen: Wer hat euch Befehl gegeben, dieses Haus zu bauen, und diese Mauer wieder herzustellen?

10 Auch nach ihren Namen fragten wir sie, um sie dir anzuzeigen, daß wir die Namen der Männer aufschrieben, welche ihre Häupter sind.

11 Und sie gaben uns folgende Antwort, indem sie sprachen: Wir sind die Knechte dessen, der Gott des Himmels und der Erde ist, und bauen das Haus, welches vor vielen Jahren gebauet worden; und welches ein großer König von Israel gebauet und aufgerichtet hat.

12 Nachdem aber unsre Väter den Gott des Himmels zum Zorn gereizt hatten, gab er sie in die Hand Nebukadnezars, des Königs von Babel, des Chaldäers, und er zerstörte dieses Haus, und führte das Volk weg nach Babel.

13 Aber im ersten Jahre des Cyrus, des Königs von Babel, gab der König Cyrus den Befehl, dieses Haus Gottes (wieder) aufzubauen.

14 Und auch die goldenen und silbernen Geräthe des Hauses Gottes, welche Nebukadnezar aus dem Tempel, welcher in Jerusalem war, weggenommen, und in den Tempel, welcher zu Babel ist, gebracht hatte, nahm der König Cyrus aus dem Tempel, welcher zu Babel ist, und gab sie Scheschbazar mit Namen, den er auch zum Statthalter einsetzte.

15 Und er sprach zu ihm: Nimm diese Geräthe, gehe, bringe sie in den Tempel, welcher in Jerusalem ist; und das Haus Gottes soll gebauet werden an seiner Stelle.

16 Alsdann kam jener Scheschbazar, legte den Grund zu dem Hause Gottes, welches in Jerusalem ist; und seit der Zeit bis jetzt wird es gebauet; und es ist noch nicht vollendet.

17 Wenn es nun dem Könige gut scheint, so suche man in dem Schatzhause des Königs, welches daselbst zu Babel ist, ob von dem Könige Cyrus der Befehl gegeben worden sey, dieses Haus Gottes in Jerusalem zu bauen; und den Willen des Königs hierüber möge er uns zusenden.

1 Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel prophesied they unto them. 2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. 3 At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? 4 Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building. 5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it.

6 The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king; 7 they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace. 8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands. 9 Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? 10 We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them. 11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished. 12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13 But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. 14 And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15 and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place. 16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed. 17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
