Sephatja, der Sohn Matthans, Gedalja, der Sohn Paschchur's, Juchal, der Sohn Selemja's, und Paschchur, der Sohn Malchija's, hörten die Worte, welche Jeremias zum ganzen Volke sprach, indem er sagte: 
So spricht Jehova: Wer in dieser Stadt bleibt, der wird durch's Schwert, durch Hungersnoth, und Pest umkommen; wer aber hinausgeht zu den Chaldäern, der wird am Leben bleiben, und seine Seele wird ihm zur Beute seyn, und er wird leben. 
So spricht Jehova: Diese Stadt wir in die Hand des Kriegsheeres des Königs von Babel fallen, und er wird sie erobern. 
Da sprachen die Fürsten zum Könige: Dieser Mann muß getödtet werden; denn auf diese Weise macht er schlaff die Hände der in der Stadt noch übrigen Kriegsmänner, und die Hände des ganzen Volkes, daß er solche Reden an sie hält. Fürwahr! dieser Mann trachtet nicht nach dem Glück dieses Volkes, sondern nach dem Unglück desselben. 
Darauf sprach der König Zedekias: Sehet! er ist in eurer Hand, der König vermag nichts wider euch! 
Da nahmen sie den Jeremias, und warfen ihn in die Cisterne Malchija's, des Sohnes Hamelech's, die im Vorhofe der Hauptwache war. Man ließ den Jeremias mit Stricken hinab; die Cisterne war zwar ohne Wasser, aber voll Schlamm, so daß Jeremias in den Schlamm sank. 
Der Aethiophier, Ebed-Melech, welcher ein Hofbedienter, und im Hause des Königs war, hörte, daß man den Jeremias in die Cisterne geworfen habe; und der König saß gerade im Thore Benjamin's. 
Da ging Ebed Melech aus dem Hause des Königs, und redete zum Könige, und sprach: 
Mein Herr König! unrecht haben jene Männer in Allem gehandelt, was sie an dem Propheten Jeremias gethan, den sie in die Cisterne geworfen haben, Sogar da, wo er war, hätte er sterben müssen vor Hunger; weil kein Brod mehr in der Stadt ist. 
Da befahl der König dem Aethiophier Ebed-Melech, und sprach: Nimm dir dreißig Männer von hier zur Hand, und ziehe den Propheten Jeremias aus der Cisterne, ehe er umkommt. 
Ebed-Melech nahm sich die Männer zur Hand, und ging in das Haus des Königs, in ein Gemach unter der Schatzkammer, und nahm von da zerissene Kleider und Lumpen heraus, und ließ sie mit Stricken zu Jeremias in die Cisterne hinab. 
Und es sprach der Aethiophier, Ebed-Melech, zu Jeremias: Lege die zerrissenen Kleider, und die Lumpen unter deine Achseln, unter die Stricke. Jeremias that es. 
Und nun zogen sie den Jeremias mit den Stricken, und brachten ihn aus der Cisterne; und Jeremias blieb im Vorhofe der Hauptwache sitzen. 
Und der König Zedekias schickte, und ließ den Propheten Jeremias zu sich kommen unter den dritten Eingang im Hause Jehova's; und es sprach der König zu Jeremias: Ich will dich um etwas fragen, verschweige mir nichts! 
Und Jeremias antwortete dem Könige: Wenn ich es dir anzeige, wirst du mich nicht tödten lassen? Und wenn ich dir meinen Rath ertheile, so wirst du mir doch nicht folgen. 
Da schwur der König Zedekias dem Jeremias insgeheim, und sprach: So wahr Jehova lebt, der uns dieses Leben gegeben hat, ich will dich nicht tödten lassen, noch in die Hand dieser Männer geben, die dir nach dem Leben streben. 
Da sprach Jeremias zu Zedekias: So spricht Jehova, der Weltenherrscher, der Gott Israels: Wenn du zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel übergehest; so wirst du am Leben bleiben. 
Wenn du aber nicht zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel übergehest; so wird diese Stadt in die Hand der Chaldäer gegeben werden; und diese werden sie mit Feuer verbrennen; und du wirst aus ihrer Hand nicht gerettet werden. 
Da antwortete der König Zedekias dem Jeremias: Mir ist bange vor den Juden, die übergegangen sind zu den Chaldäern, daß man mich denselben übergebe, und sie mich verspotten. 
Jeremias erwiederte: Man wird dich nicht übergeben! Höre nur auf die Stimme Jehova's, auf das, was ich zu dir rede; so wird es dir gut gehen, und du wirst am Leben bleiben. 
Weigerst du dich aber, überzugehen; so ist dieses der Ausspruch, den mir Jehova geoffenbaret hat: 
Siehe! alle Weiber, die im Hause des Königs von Juda noch übrig geblieben sind, werden zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel gebracht werden, und sagen: Hintergangen haben dich, und überwältiget deine Freunde; da stecken deine Füße im Koth, und jene sind zurückgetreten. 
Alle deine Weiber, und deine Söhne wird man zu den Chaldäern hinausführen, auch du wirst aus ihrer Hand nicht gerettet werden; sondern in die Hand des Königs von Babel fallen; und diese Stadt wird durch Feuer verbrennen. 
Zedekias sprach zu Jeremias: Niemand darf um diese Unterredung wissen, damit du nicht umkommest. 
Sollten die Fürsten erfahren, daß ich mit dir geredet habe, und zu dir kommen und sagen: Zeige uns an, was du mit dem Könige geredet hast, verschweige es uns nicht, wir wollen dich nicht tödten, und was der König zu dir gesagt hat; 
so antworte ihnen: Ich habe meine demüthigste Bitte vor den König gelegt, mich nicht mehr in Jonathan's Haus bringen zu lassen; weil ich da umkommen müßte. 
Es kamen auch alle Fürsten zu Jeremias, und fragten ihn; und er sagte ihnen alle Worte, wie es ihm der König befohlen hatte. Sie gingen ruhig von ihm weg; denn man ward nichts von der Sache gewahr. 
Und Jeremias blieb im Vorhofe der Hauptwache bis auf den Tag, da Jerusalem erobert wurde. Und es geschah, daß Jerusalem erobert wurde. 

And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spake unto all the people, saying, 2 Thus saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall live. 3 Thus saith Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it. 4 Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. 5 And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you. 6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire. 
Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), 8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying, 9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city. 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die. 11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. 13 So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. 
Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me. 15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me. 16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life. 
Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house. 18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand. 19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. 20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live. 21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah hath showed me: 22 behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee: now that thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back. 23 And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire. 
Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die. 25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee: 26 then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there. 27 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived. 28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken. 
And it came to pass when Jerusalem was taken
