1 Der Ausspruch, welcher geschah an Jeremias von Jehova, nachdem ihn Nebusaradan, der Oberste der Leibwache aus Rama entlassen hatte. Als er ihn nahm, war er mit Ketten geschlossen mitten unter allen Gefangenen Jerusalems und Juda's, die nach Babel geführt werden sollten.

2 Und es nahm der Oberste der Leibwache den Jeremias, und sprach zu ihm: Jehova, dein Gott, hat dieß Elend über diesen Ort ausgesprochen;

3 und herbeigeführt, und Jehova hat gehandelt, wie er versprochen; weil ihr wider Jehova sündigtet, und seiner Stimme nicht gehorchtet. Darum ist euch dieses widerfahren.

4 Doch nun siehe! ich löse dir heute die Fesseln, die um deine Hände sind. Wenn es gut ist in deinen Augen, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen, so komme; ich sorge für dich. Ist es aber übel in deinen Augen, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen; so kannst du es unterlassen. Siehe! das ganze Land hast du vor dir; gehe dahin, wohin es dir gut und recht dünkt.

5 Da er sich aber noch zu nichts entschloß, (so fuhr Nebusaradan fort:) Nun so begib dich wieder zu Gedalja, dem Sohne Achikam's, des Sohnes Saphan's, den der König von Babel über die Städte von Juda gesetzt hat, und bleibe bei ihm unter dem Volke; oder gehe nur hin, wohin zu gehen dir recht dünkt. Und es gab ihm der Oberste der Leibwache einen bestimmten Unterhalt, und ein Geschenk, und entließ ihn.

6 Jeremias kam also zu Gedalja, dem Sohne Achikam's, nach Mizpa, und blieb bei ihm unter dem Volke, das im Lande zurückgeblieben war.

7 Als alle Heerführer, die auf dem Lande sich aufhielten, und ihre Mannschaft hörten, daß der König von Babel Gedalja, den Sohn Achikam's, zum Aufseher über das Land gesetzt, und daß er die Männer, Weiber und Kinder von den Armen des Landes, die nicht nach Babel geführt worden, unter seine Aufsicht gestellt habe,

8 begaben sie sich zu Gedalja nach Mizpa, nämlich Ismael, der Sohn Nethanja's, Johanan und Jonathan, die Söhne Kareach's, Seraja, der Sohn Thanhumeth's, die Söhne Ephai's von Netophath, und Jesanja, der Sohn Maachati's, sie und ihre Mannschaft.

9 Gedalja, der Sohn Achikam's, des Sohnes Saphans, schwor ihnen, und ihren Leuten, und sprach: Fürchtet euch nicht, den Chaldäern zu dienen; bleibet im Lande, und dienet dem Könige von Babel, und es wird euch wohl gehen.

10 Was mich betrifft, sehet! ich bleibe zu Mizpa, den Chaldäern zu dienen, die zu uns kommen werden; und ihr könnet Wein, Sommerfrüchte, und Oel einsammeln, und in eure Gefäße thun, und in euren Städten wohnen, die ihr in Besitz genommen.

11 Auch alle Juden, die sich in Moab, und unter den Söhnen Ammon's, und in Edom, und die sich in andern Ländern aufhielten, erfuhren, daß der König von Babel noch einen Ueberrest von Juden zurückgelassen, und Gedalja, den Sohn Achikam's, des Sohnes Saphan's, zum Aufseher über sie gesetzt habe;

12 und es kehrten alle Juden aus allen Orten, wohin sie sich zerstreut hatten, zurück, und kamen in's Land Juda zu Gedalja nach Mizpa, und sammelten Wein, und Sommerfrüchte in großer Menge.

13 Aber Johanan, der Sohn Kareach's, und alle Heerführer, die auf dem Lande sich aufhielten, begaben sich zu Gedalja nach Mizpa,

14 und sprachen zu ihm: Weißt du auch, daß Baalis, der König der Söhne Ammon's, den Ismael, den Sohn Nethanja's abgeschickt hat, dich zu tödten? Aber Gedalja, der Sohn Achikam's glaubte ihnen nicht.

15 Und Johanan, der Sohn Kareach's, redete noch insgeheim zu Gedalja in Mizpa, und sprach: Ich will jetzt hingehen, und Ismael, den Sohn Nethanja's erschlagen; kein Mensch soll es erfahren. Warum soll er dich erschlagen? Dann würden alle Juden zerstreuet werden, die sich zu dir versammelt haben, und das Ueberbleibsel der Juden zu Grunde gehen.

16 Aber Gedalja, der Sohn Achikam's, antwortete dem Johanan, dem Sohne Kareach's: Thue dieses nicht! denn was du von Ismael sagst, ist nicht wahr.

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive unto Babylon. 2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, Jehovah thy God pronounced this evil upon this place; 3 and Jehovah hath brought it, and done according as he spake: because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. 4 And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thy hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will look well unto thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and right unto thee to go, thither go. 5 Now while he was not yet gone back, Go back then, said he, to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a present, and let him go. 6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7 Now when all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon; 8 then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, to wit, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. 9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. 10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans that shall come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken. 11 Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; 12 then all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

13 Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 14 and said unto him, Dost thou know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take thy life? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not. 15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews that are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish? 16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing; for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.
