1 Als der kananitische König von Arad, welcher in der Südgegend wohnte, hörte, daß Israel auf dem Wege Atharim heranrückte, stritt er gegen Israel, und machte von ihm Gefangene.

2 Da that Israel Jehova ein Gelübde, und sprach: Wenn du dieses Volk in meine Hände gibst, so will ich ihre Städte gottverschwören.

3 Und Jehova hörte auf die Stimme Israels, und übergab ihnen die Kananiter, und man gab der gottverschwornen Vertilgung sie und ihre Städte hin; und nannte den Namen des Ortes Horma (d. i. Gottverschwörung).

4 Und sie brachen auf vom Gebirge Hor gegen das Schilfmeer zu, um das Land Edom zu umgehen, und das Volk wurde ungeduldig auf dem Wege.

5 Und das Volk redete wider Gott und wider Mose: Warum habet ihr uns heraufgeführt aus Aegypten, daß wir in der Wüste sterben sollen; wo weder Brod, noch Wasser ist, und uns vor dieser elenden Speise ekelt?

6 Da schickte Jehova giftige Schlangen gegen das Volk, die das Volk bissen, so daß eine große Menge von Israel starb.

7 Da kam das Volk zu Mose, und sprach: Wir haben gesündigt, daß wir geredet haben gegen Jehova und gegen dich; flehe zu Jehova, daß er die Schlangen von uns abwende. Da flehte Mose für das Volk.

8 Und Jehova sprach zu Mose: Mache dir eine Schlange, und setze sie auf eine Stange; da soll's geschehen, Jeder, der gebissen ist, und sie anblickt, wird am Leben bleiben.

9 Da machte Mose eine eherne Schlange, und setzte sie auf eine Stange; und es geschah, wenn eine Schlange Jemanden gebissen hatte, und dieser die eherne Schlang anblickte, so blieb er am Leben.

10 Und die Söhne Israels brachen auf, und lagerten sich in Oboth.

11 Und sie brachen von Oboth auf, und lagerten sich bei Ijehabarim, in der Wüste, die vor Moab gegen Sonnenaufgang liegt.

12 Von da brachen sie auf, und lagerten sich im Thale Sared.

13 Von da brachen sie auf, und lagerten sich jenseits des Arnon, der in der Wüste fließt, der vom Gebiete der Amoriter herkommt; denn der Arnon war die Grenze Moabs, zwischen den Moabitern und den Amoritern.

14 Deßwegen heißt es im Buche der Kriege Jehova's: "Waheb im Sturme, und die Ströme des Arnon,

15 die Ströme, die sich wenden gegen Schebeth-Ar, und sich lehnen an Moabs Grenze."

16 Und von da nach Beer (d. i. zum Brunnen). Dieß ist der Brunnen, wo Jehova zu Mose sagte: Sammle das Volk, daß ich ihnen Wasser gebe.

17 Da sang Israel folgendes Lied: "Herauf Brunnen, singet ihm!"

18 "Der Brunnen, gegraben haben ihn die Fürsten, ausgehöhlt die Edlen im Volke mit dem Scepter, und mit ihren Stäben." - Und von der Wüste (kamen sie) nach Mathana;

19 und von Mathana nach Nahaliel, und von Nahaliel nach Bamoth;

20 von Bamoth in das Thal, das im Felde Moab ist, an dem Gipfel des Pisga, der nach der Wüste zu hervorragt.

21 Da schickter Israel Gesandte zu Sihon, dem Könige der Amoriter, und ließ ihm sagen:

22 Ich will durch dein Land ziehen, wir wollen nicht ausbeugen weder auf das Feld, noch in den Weinberg; noch Wasser aus dem Brunnen trinken; auf der Königsstraße wollen wir gehen, bis wir über deine Grenze hinaus sind.

23 Aber Sihon gestattete Israel nicht, durch sein Gebiet zu ziehen; Sihon sammelte vielmehr sein ganzes Volk, und zog aus, Israel entgegen in die Wüste. Als er nach Jahza kam, griff er Israel an.

24 Aber Israel schlug ihn mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und eroberte sein Land vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok, bis zu den Söhnen Ammons; denn die Grenze der Söhne Ammons war fest.

25 Da nahm Israel alle diese Städte, und Israel wohnte in allen Städten der Amoriter, in Hesbon, und in allen ihren Töchterstädten.

26 Die Stadt Hesbon gehörte Sihon, dem Könige der Amoriter; er hatte nämlich früher gestritten wider den König von Moab, und sein ganzes Land ihm abgenommen bis zum Arnon.

27 Daher sagen die Dichter: "Kommet nach Hesbon, gebaut soll werden, und fest gegründet die Stadt Sihons."

28 "Denn Feuer fuhr aus Hesbon, Flamme aus der Stadt Sihons, verzehrt hat es Ar, der Moabiter Stadt, die Bewohner der Höhen des Arnon."

29 "Wehe dir, Moab! verloren bist du, Volk Kamos! man hat seine Söhne gemacht zu Flüchtlingen, und seine Töchter in die Gefangenschaft geführt zu Sihon, dem Könige der Amoriter."

30 "Geschossen haben wir auf sie, verloren ist Hesbon bis Dibon, verwüstet haben wir bis Naphah, das bis Medba reicht."

31 Und Israel wohnte im Lande der Amoriter.

32 Da sandte Mose aus, Jaser auszukundschaften; und sie eroberten ihre Töchterstädte, und bemächtigten sich der Amoriter, die da waren.

33 Und sie wandten sich, und zogen gegen Basan zu. Da rückte Og, der König von Basan, aus, ihnen entgegen, er und sein ganzes Volk zum Streit nach Edrei.

34 Da sprach Jehova zu Mose: Fürchte ihn nicht, denn in deine Hand hab' ich ihn gegeben, und sein ganzes Volk, und sein Land; und mache es ihm, wie du es Sihon, dem Könige der Amoriter, gemacht hast, der in Hesbon wohnte.

35 Und sie schlugen ihn, und seine Söhne, und sein ganzes Volk, bis ihm Keiner mehr übrig blieb, und nahmen sein Land ein.

1 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. 3 And Jehovah hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. 5 And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 6 And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth. 11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising. 12 From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered. 13 From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah,

Vaheb in Suphah,

And the valleys of the Arnon,

15 And the slope of the valleys

That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar,

And leaneth upon the border of Moab.

16 And from thence they journeyed to Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Then sang Israel this song:

Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

18 The well, which the princes digged,

Which the nobles of the people delved,

With the sceptre, and with their staves.

And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah; 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.

21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed thy border. 23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel. 24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon. 27 Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say,

Come ye to Heshbon;

Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon,

A flame from the city of Sihon:

It hath devoured Ar of Moab,

The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 Woe to thee, Moab!

Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh:

He hath given his sons as fugitives,

And his daughters into captivity,

Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon,

And we have laid waste even unto Nophah,

Which reacheth unto Medeba.

31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon. 35 So they smote him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
